- Psychopathic offenders - or "psychopaths" - are believed to be dangerous social predators, utterly incapable of pro-social behaviour. Once diagnosed as a psychopath, a person is likely to be managed differently in the criminal justice system, such as being placed in high-risk institutions, denied parole, and given non-lenient sentences. But are psychopaths really such dangerous social predators in need of extra-diligent control? In this talk, Dr. Rasmus Rosenberg Larsen presents recent research, which he believes should prompt use to rethink the use of psychopathy assessments in the criminal justice system.
Dr. Rasmus Rosenberg Larsen is an Assistant Professor in the Forensic Science Program at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Dr. Larsen’s area of specialization is in Forensic Epistemology, researching various issues in forensic practices intersecting with ethical guidelines, theory validation, and critical thinking. An interesting study. I actually think most psychopaths aren't violent, at least not the intelligent ones. There are other ways to get what you want, violence is just the most immediate/risky. Psychopaths think in logical terms. They don't have that emotional feeling behind their choices. For instance he asks the question would you break the law to save someone? Well, the answer is simple. Do they know that person? Is it worth the risk or is it just some random person. In a psychopaths minds they weigh the risks vs the rewards. If the risks are low chances are they will do it. If not, they probably won't. You then factor in hard morals. Are they willing to kill? If not they can use manipulation, bribary, coercion. It takes more time, but the risks are lower. This is probably why you find more psychopaths doing blue collar crimes than cold blooded murder.
Not all psychopaths commit crimes, many are actually very good and powerful people. And it’s not necessarily the fact they don’t have emotions, but they don’t make decisions based off of them and this is very powerful as they don’t put limitation on themselves. I know because I am one
All psychopaths are super violent. Agression today is defined as any action that is meant to improve your rank. This definition for example includes psychoterror and social exclusion. Now Psychopaths are the most rank aware dominance seeking people I know, so they can not be non violent. It is not their nature.

@Goldilox In psychopathy type 2 yes. Also known as Antisocial Personality Disorder, or sociopathy although that last one isn’t a formal term. Type 1 psychopathy is less impulsive. Type 1 is born that way and type 2 is made (traumatic childhood).
A cool idea for a scifi novel would be: Humans create AI to detect psychopaths and to wipe them out. AI becomes too powerful and threatens mankind. Psychopaths are the only hope to lead mankind in a war against AI.

@@marcusrosales3344 We should aspire to life in a world where everyone is equal. This definitely includes Psychopaths. They are portrayed in film as monsters, some of them are yes, and they will get justice for that. But most of them make an effort to include themselves in our society, to kill and torture them because they were born different is the thing monsters do. You do not need to be a psychopath to be one of them.
conscience is more about lack of remorse than lack of empathy and to top it off, remorse can be faked superficially
and the ability to recognize emotion doesn't equate to "empathy", the ability to FEEL another's emotion is empathy
like in the book without conscience, they know the words but they dont hear the music
about moral judgement, it would probably worked better if the scenario described had benefit to the person at the cost of harm to another.. but even to that, psychopaths would easily lie with words.. so the scenarios would have to be deemed real to elicit real results
I've found that remorse is extremely hard to fake. More so than empathy. But that's just me.

@@chocolaaateful Remorse is also a feeling. Psychopaths can not experience emotions or they experience them blunted, delayed. I think it is a mistake of normal people to expect feelings of remorse from them and it is too shocking for many to find that it is not there. I was a victim and that shock cost me 5 yrs of my life...
Isn't conscience the super ego which is born out of a collective such as society, community and parental figures?

It's interesting that some children's frontal lobes develop normally and some don't. Nurture or neglect in infancy is something I would like to look into more. Also are the traits more common in people from damaged homes.
There are videos about narcissism on the you tube channel of HG Tudor. He has a great, insightful series of videos who can help you get an idea of this specific disorder. He has a system which divides narcissists in different classes. Haven't yet found quality videos about sociopathy or psychopaths yet.
Psychopaths have different brains they have smaller amygdala and prefrontal cortex, also the neuroactivity in the prefrontal cortex is completely different from that of a neurotypical individual. So, sure, not all psychopaths become serial killers but the likelihood of committing unthinkable atrocity is much higher among psychopaths than all other clusters.
He talks about this extensive study he did on cases relating to psychopaths to get a better idea about them, but only studies cases of imprisoned psychopaths ?? Good job, what about all those psychopaths who are abusive in many ways to others and are smart/ calculated enough to not end up in jail... ??
Because some psychopaths get abused and grow up in a bad childhood, they become gruesome murderers and they ruin the public image of all the "normal" psychopaths who have normal lives. And the latter don't fight back on the bad public image, because the one half doesn't know they're psychopaths and the other half doesn't care, because psychopaths don't care about anything. That's quite tragic, come to think of it.

It's also interesting that psychopaths are commonly employed in the medical, police, and business force and no one bats an eye.
The experiment should be performed again while following them closely and those involved in their lives. Post-prison, a psychopath simply gets better at hiding crime and becomes more violent in his personal life to thwart those who would turn him in. While this video started out as a reasonable judgement of psychopathy, it became an incorrect defense of psychopathy. There is abundant evidence that psychopaths do not benefit from therapy, learn to work around the system, and have higher rates of domestic violence as a result. When an evidence-based PCL-R concludes a person is a psychopath, that in itself is judgement enough. Take the PCL-R for yourself (assuming you are of right mind) and you will discover a score probably in the low single digits. Now look over the questions and imagine what a person must be inside of themselves to justify the actions that would create a score in excess of 30 (close to 40 in a lot of cases). As yourself - is this someone who has a “conscience”? Dr. Robert Hare created an outstanding test which focuses specifically on those predicting factors that mark someone as being far outside the normal social constructs. These are predators in our society and should be treated as such. There is so much more damage caused by these individuals that is not measured by simply entering or leaving the prison system.
I think we should start testing all children for psychopathy and isolate psychopathic children from the toxic environments in which they are growing up. More often than not, psychopaths weren't raised in nurturing caring environments, and more likely than not their parents may have a mental disorder themselves. Though it's true, a nurturing upbringing does not guarantee that one won't become a murderer but it significantly diminishing violent predispositions on the factors that thrill-seeking factors can be channeled elsewhere, such as sports, participating in team activities, etc. Psychopaths can be thought of mechanically have to be part of society and be accepted without rebelling against it, psychopaths can be thought by social norms logically, again that still doesn't guarantee that the person won't commit a violent crime, but public awareness and the awareness for a psychopath themselves could contribute to a positive outcome. People that are aware of psychopathy will have different expectations of a psychopath, they will be more careful around them like you are being more careful not to put your hand in the lion's cage.

That was interesting. I can say, which is rare for me, that what he said about psychopaths is a complete and total load of tosh. Now that’s not a professional opinion, I’m a scientist not a pseudoscientist. However, I have spent my entire life with people of psychopathic personality. I can tell you from my vast experience that they are very different from other people and not all are serial killers (yes I know a few of those to). There’s a world of difference between study and actual experience.

you should have waited a while before commenting on this video. Your emotional investment in this subject has temporarily done away with your scientific schooling, I'm sure you can see why I'm saying this. You can't decide if 100.000 psychopaths can be rehabilitated to any acceptable degree within a year, for example, so this is a study that has been running for years, just as many scientifically educated people will have had to be involved with its various procedures.
So calling this research that Larsen speaks about a 'complete and total load of tosh' is as unfair as can be. If you believe you hear him claiming that psychopaths are, or ever can become, like the rest of the population around the world - although I can understand why some may get that impression - you are mistaken.
I am not trying to belittle your personal experiences with psychopaths, I'm just trying to tell you that your position as a scientist towards this study is wrong and very unscientific, so I hope you will reconsider.

Everyone has their own perception of reality, ours is just different, but the same, it’s weird lmao
I believe psychopaths are just enlightened without knowing it, meaning no one is up there telling them right from wrong in their head, so they are capable of doing whatever they want without remorse or suffering, this is really good and really bad because it allows those in this space to polarize much faster than others.
I feel it’s good for careers that don’t require empathy or can affect other citizens in a negative way. Currently we allow people with little to no empathy to be in positions that would preferably have someone with extreme empathy. People with question the ethics behind that suggestion but a look into history will show you many cluster B personality types who always filled these positions requiring empathy and failed the public by not having it or not attempting to use it. They could fill other high positions I feel they have a place just like any of us do but maybe not the place of civil leadership or involvement

@@philasopherr Well if you think about it highly empathic people/ highly agreeable people are not typically in management due to the fact they are plagued with anxiety and appeasing others and caring about their feelings....higher than average narcissistic/psychopathic trait type people end up in management due to not letting peoples feelings take priority of insuring the company is making money/ production numbers are there and the right people are placed where they need to be. They can remain cool calm under-pressure and prioritize logically of how to reach the goals of themselves and company. Empathic people have their place in customer service and health care but when you in charge emotional empathy is a variable but not a priority to be the bearing of success.

Maybe there is no scientific approach to diagnosing a psychopath. We may have to use a moral compass. A society which is founded in the word of God could make this assessment.

I'm struggling to understand why you assume psychopaths are all criminals. It's not true. Most do not have a criminal record, they don't harm people extensively or even physically, they could be dating your sister.
