I think this whole season should tell everybody how valuable nick backstroom has been for the capitals our first playoff’s with out him and look what happens.

Ovechkin is only looking for individual accomplishment and that one is Gretzky's goal scoring record. The moment he gets that, he's done. I hope he does not get there.
Rangers had a full compliment of players. Caps had a lot of injuries to key guys and were trying to plug in young players. Along with a first year head coach and new system, it’s tough. I’m glad they made it to the playoffs. The young guys will remember the experience.
Rangers also have talented experienced and very young players. Carlson recalls being very good 5-on-5. What about all the Power plays they could not cash in? Rangers were hit with a disproportionate amount of penalty minutes - which they killed with skill. I remember honorable sportsmanship was to acknowledge the victor but we’re living in the age of un-enlightenment and disinformation, Oh well.

the Caps "key guys" aren't as good as those on the Rangers, I doubt it would have made a difference.
The only "Key Guy" on the Caps is Ovi, and he could barely get a shot off and had 0 points.
How do people not appreciate the context of the Caps season. They have a talented but rookie coach with a young group of players. They don't have a true 1C with Backstrom out indefinitely. They were sellers at the deadline. Ovi was clearly physically not there at the start of the year - and probably mentally as well given his dad's passing last year. Yet, they still make the playoffs and Ovi notched 30. The young players got some solid experience with playoff hockey, but they are not there yet to compete with a seasoned team like the Rangers. Ovi knows, with his 2018 ring, the only major thing left for him is the goals record. He's not winning anymore cups with this group for now - especially if he's still the team's primary goal scorer at 38.
They are slow and not effective anymore. The team has gotten old. It happens. Rangers thoroughly outplayed them.
First, let's give the Rangers credit where due. They were by far the better team. Excellent goaltending. They spread the love around. Hell, even Rempe the Brute scored.
Next, let's be careful how we describe "all around" superstars. Ovechkin can shoot pucks into the net. Period. That's why he'll surpass Gretzky. But defensive game ? Nada. Fighting for the puck in the offensive zone ? Nada. Getting into the play vs. waiting at the blue line or waiting for the perfect pass ? Nada. McDavid he is not. Crosby he is not. Stamkos he is not. The list goes on.
Sad for WA. Oshie and Wilson deserved better. Their coach deserved better. Their goalie deserved better.
The Great 8 will break the Great One's record, but probably will never come close to the Cup again 😢
Caps don't have the team....goal differential was awful during reg season.
Ovie should retire. Gobbling up salary space to stand around and sink your team is lame. Either renegotiate to a rookie salary so you can hang around or let the team off the hook and retire. Even if he catches Gretzky’s goal record in 2026 (because there’s no way he’s a 40-goal scorer any more) he still has three fewer cups and will never be considered as GOAT.
NHL is not the NFL, cant renegotiate contracts.

This is laughable. Anyone who thought the capitals stood half a chance against this stacked rangers team need to give their head a shake.
Without Ovi going on a tear after the all star break this God awful team would not be in the playoffs to begin with.
It's a miracle they made it at all.......... Ovi is 38 for god sakes its bit a surprise he was shut down by an elite team.....

no offense to the caps but maybe he should pull a Ray Bourque and go to a contender and let the caps rebuild finally instead of having to make a team whose sole purpose is to help him get a scoring record

100% agree…. Everyone keeps dissing on Caps while not recognising which level of team they were playing. Rangers are a well playing team with a number of stars in their line up.

I've never heard a man mumble more and ZERO substance come out. Ok, here is the translation. I had ONE shot in 4 games. Compare that to the regular season, where the goals count towards the record. have a good summer back in mother russia. rest up. I know, that sucks. I know you wished you could have gone deep in the playoffs.
