Easy now Gino..... Ovi will never reach Great Gretzky status. He might score more all time goals but never close the same greatness. My fav sports stat...... take all Waynes record setting goals away and he is still the all time points leader with his only his assists.
He's already the superior goal scorer to Gretzky and did it in a harder era to score against vastly superior goaltending. Gretzky didn't have the tools, the size or the shot Ovechkin has which is why Ovi has been able to do it longer. Gretzky was done as an elite goal scorer the minute goaltending technique improved and save percentages creeped up above a pedestrian .900 He preyed on the worst era of defense and goaltendin in the history of the game and that's why scoring was so high across the league.
50 goals is over rated as it happens every season. 60 goals on the other hand is a better and more significant of a milestone because it happens less often than 50 goal seasons does.
Ovechkin won 4 Rockets where he was the only 50 goal scorer in the league. He won another Rocket scoring 51 and only Draisaitl had 50 that season as the runner up.
It’s only starting to be more common again since the league began their quest to increase scoring a few years ago to make it more like the 80s. There was a time where the very few such as Oveckin, Crosby, Stamkos and the like could be the only ones who can get close to 50+; but now we see it happening more frequently, even 60+ is more common now.
Ovechkin will surpass the great one on goals, however Gretzky has a total of 2,979 points, 1,438 more then Ovechkin. Therefore Ovechkin will become the greatest goal scorer, and Gretzky will remain the greatest player of all time, and no one will catch him on that one.
Alex Ovechkin has been directly or indirectly responsible for 1543 goals in 1414 NHL games. (Clearly, 1543 more than me.) However, Wayne Gretzky has been directly or indirectly involved in 2857(!) goals in 1457 games. It’s an amazing personal achievement for Ovechkin, even if he never scores another goal again. BUT! Gretzky is the greater scorer. There is no comparison. When/If some surpasses his numbers, then they can make a claim. This is isn’t difficult. It’s just math.
The difficult part for some like you to grasp is that nobody is saying Ovechkin is a better player than Gretzky. No need to get your Gretzky "Pro-Star" undies in a bunch.
If Ovechkin were old enough to play hockey in Gretzky’s era, he’d be potting 100Gs a season. You can literally watch their career highlights and see Ovechkin doing things Gretzky never could. Gretzky still is the greatest overall player ever, but Ovechkin should be respected at the goal scoring king and when he breaks the record, not much else anyone can say to dispute.

Ovechkin has a plus minus rating of only +47 and only 696 assists.
To compare the two just because of goals is absurd.
thx to the flex hockey sticks - im kidding its a cheating way to score goals thats what i think
I played hockey for about 7-8 years of my life and the flex on the stick really never mattered at all, the number is just supposed to be half your weight so you can bend it enough.
i find this watered down quest for the scoring record distracting to the entire career of ovechkin, dont care if he gets it or not. not important.
His team might get into the playoffs. Nothing is watered down about it. Gretzky stockpiled his goals in the highest scoring era.
I am more impressed with Howe's 801, considering the eras he scored them in.
@@GreekboyyD i disagree, i think it lacks substance. i hope he gets it.

Great 8 greater than 99? No.
Ovi hasn't had a bodyguard his entire career.
@@martinsundland7614 that is what makes Ovi the greatest goal scorer? I'm old enough to watch Oilers, Gretzky. Ovi would have needed a goon to protect him in the 80s and 90s.
Other great goal scores in the conversation are Bossy, Lemieux and Richard, . I think an argument can be made for each. What separates Gretzky is he was a playmaker 1st and possibly the least athleticism in comparison to strength, speed and agility vs the greats in any sport. Gretzky was only 160 lbs @ 6'1. His endurance was in a class by itself.
Ovi would already have the record if it wasn't for the lockouts during his career. He also started his nhl career late by comparison
Ovechkin played a totally different game than did Gretzky - heavy hitting and taking people on- whereas Gretzky danced around and raked in points by assisting Kurri and the other absolute snipers. Very different ways of getting to the top of the heap.@@duaneday5474
@@duaneday5474That proves his point even more.

He should stick around and try and beat the points record 👨🏻🦳
Would take him another 22 years, plus the nhl would halfto add a third assist to all goals.
no one would ever catch gretzky in points
This is a ridiculous question due to the fact that you are saying all time goal scoring record… you are not counting playoff goals. So it is not the all time record is it.
Still clutching onto those Gretzky jammies?😂
No one counts playoff goals, no one. How far you make it is a team accomplishment which directly correlates to how many games you played.
@@theroseexperience Only Gretzky fanboys do. They keep moving the goalposts
emotionally attached to gretzkys current record you're trying to diminish ovis value huh ?
So will he will ever score 92 in a season ?
Maybe if the goalies dont wear equipment like they did back then.....
Only if the game reverts back to cardboard cutouts masquerading as goalies. Bring back turnstile d-men and defence as an option too😂
maybe if goalies were pure standup & butterfly like they used to along with slow d-men who only know how to lay hard hits.
@@colemarion9915give a player a wooden stick today and put an 80’s goalie in net and the numbers won’t change…it’s either you can score or you cant…you see it in every level…the game evolved for all players.
Skates equipment evolution changed the game for all…2 line passes 3vs3 OT you name it, nhl has tried to push for more goals because they are still trying to figure out how Gretzky did it.
@@phils6733 Nonsense, goalies in the 80's couldnt' even butterfly and were 5'9. They won Vezin'a with ,890's they absolute sucked. Give Ovi a wood stick in that era and he's scoring 100 easily.
1016 is the Gretzky all time goal record bud-
Gretzky fanboys moving the goalposts now. 😂🤡
Lol 😆 🤣 😅 ovi will be the all time NHL goal record by the end of next season 😊
60 goals on the other hand is a better and more significant of a milestone because it happens less often than 50 goal seasons does.
wow what a hot take
Ovechkin won 4 Rockets where he was the only 50 goal scorer in the league.
@@romanborris7919 Perfectly said my friend. Hyman and Reinhart would not be potting 50 during those years.
A 50 goal season, in the best hockey league in the world, is never overrated. In any era.
I know I’m in the minority but I really hope it doesn’t happen.
It's gonna happen
explain why
Ovechkin will surpass the great one on goals, however Gretzky has a total of 2,979 points, 1,438 more then Ovechkin. Therefore Ovechkin will become the greatest goal scorer, and Gretzky will remain the greatest player of all time, and no one will catch him on that one.
Nobody is disputing that but it's always funny when Gretzky fanboys bring it up.
You should check those Gretzky numbers one more time, they're incorrect.
I'm a total Leaf's fan since the 60's, but I do respect and acknowledge all the Iconic players, I'm no Gretzky fanboy.@@GreekboyyD

Alex Ovechkin has been directly or indirectly responsible for 1543 goals in 1414 NHL games. (Clearly, 1543 more than me.)
However, Wayne Gretzky has been directly or indirectly involved in 2857(!) goals in 1457 games.

Not even close to as good as gretzky. 2 line passes. The gretzky rules. If not for these rules nobody would catch gretzky. All the major sports are jokes now. Rules for more scoring in all of them.
