I like the pilots describing their work history, and kudos on the level of professionalism it takes to fly these big birds. I love the take-offs and landings.
So they planned for the VOR Z 11 which was later assigned by ATC with no delays. That means they were pretty much on the optimum profile beginning from TOD. They configured quite late with Flaps 1 and 2 but still within limits. A VOR approach is a non precision approach, which means they don't have external vertical guidance like on an ILS. So they have to manage the descent on final themselves. In addition the runway has a standard width of 45m but the entire pavement is actually wider (60m and more). Also the pavement itself has a light tone and the markings are not that bright. On a sunny day you can not really see the edges of the actual runway then and may think, that the 60m pavement is the 45m wide runway which then gives you the illusion you are too high, when you are actually on profile, or you are on profile, when you are actually too high, which probably happened here. When they did the DME/Altitude crosscheck, they said they were 11.3nm out (from the SUD VOR/DME, which is on the other end of runway 11). So they were roughly 9nm from the 1000ft marker, level at 4000ft or 3500ft above runway elevation (500ft too high for standard 3°), 30 knots above Vapp, Flaps 2, Gear up. The FO took immediate action and disconnected the AP to initate the final descent and commanded FD off, Gear down. The captain however was a bit too relaxed in my eyes, which indicates to me that he didn't see the problem yet. Also they didn't use speedbrakes, which would have made a big difference in this case, but maybe the airline doesn't allow speedbrakes on non precision approaches, I don't know. Nevertheless they did the correct and professional to go around.
The captain and co captain are absolutely great people just hearing thier stories how they became where they are is absolutely cool ngl the amount of professionalism in thier work is absolutely really interesting ngl
@@tidaholmarnthey were doing a non-precision approach(basically there's no equipment at the runway such as an ILS beacon to give the plane accurate information about the planes offset laterally and vertically to the ideal approach), they realized that they were too high and too fast given the distance left to the runway so they decided to go around

Nice go-around, made the decision very quickly after realising she wasn't stable. And then the visual approach too, a very competent pilot indeed, and very pretty to boot :)
your point is well taken with regard to initial visual of runway. however departing in 0 0 you cannot see the runway, using only DI and AS instruments. As a single engine CP I assume that flying a heavy is better done using instruments as illustrated in the non ils missed approach..
Yes, all the displays are completely screwed up and basically unusable. When the FO noticed they were acting up (finally!), she called for a go around.
