  • Episode 2: Styling with a petroleum Based Pomade
    In this episode I'm styling my hair with two greasy, petroleum based pomades.
    1. Murray's Black Beeswax
    2. Blue Magik Pressing Oil (for shine)
    The main advantage of using a petroleum based pomade is that your hair will stay recombable all day long and it most likely will add a nice amount of shine to it.
    I already had some buildup in my hair when I started.
    I hope you have as much fun watching this video as I had making it.
    Remember: A little vanity goes a long way for a pompadour. So up your mirror time and keep practicing!

    What is your opinion on the classic oil based pomades like, black&white, royal crown and lucky tiger cru butch.

    • @Tom_le_Grand
      @Tom_le_Grand  3 роки тому

      I've only used Black and White & Royal Crown. B&W smells great and RC has very nice shine. I use them mainly as a topper. So I like classic stuff but they do have to work with my hair. Sweet Georgia Brown, DAX, Murrays. I love the smell, oldschool artwork. But I mostly use modern home brewed products like American Greaser Supply, Lockhart's, Pomps Not Dead & Big Slick. Works great for me and has a more clean feel than those factory products.

    Does the black beeswax you use can stain things when you wash it out?

    • @Tom_le_Grand
      @Tom_le_Grand  7 років тому

      Yeah it's aways good to pay extra attention to your white tiles and floor while you wash it out. That goes for all grease but the black beeswax is more noticeable. Nothing you can't remove though.

    Hi, but do you mix the two ointments (pomade) in the video together or do you put one first and then the other? Thank you!

    • @Tom_le_Grand
      @Tom_le_Grand  3 місяці тому +1

      In this video I used the Black Beeswax as a base and the pressing oil only as a topper. Making that base takes a lot longer in clean hair and probably multiple scoops. Once the base is solid, and you can sculpt a firm pomp, you add just a very tiny bit of the pressing oil to get some shine. If you add too much pressing oil, the pomade will loose it's hold.

    • @Frankstylerome
      @Frankstylerome 3 місяці тому

      @@Tom_le_GrandForgive me, I don't think the answers are coming... Anyway, I was saying if it was possible to use Lucky tiger cru butch instead of the creams you use (unfortunately I can't find them on the internet)? And then i wanted to tell you, since I own them, that I'm mixing two pomades in particular: first I put the black and white to make the hair stronger and then I use, immediately after, the royal crown hairdressing to give shine to the hair; so together the hair is more compact but also shinier... do you think I'm doing it correctly?

    • @Tom_le_Grand
      @Tom_le_Grand  3 місяці тому

      @@Frankstylerome Yes! You are doing it correctly. That is basically what I explained to you in my reply 😄 Does Black and White give you enough hold? In my experience it's a light-medium. I have never used Cru-Butch but it looks like a solid pomade to use!

    • @Frankstylerome
      @Frankstylerome 3 місяці тому

      @@Tom_le_Grand Let's say I have to put some Black and White on it so that it holds; but it does its job... Which pomade, more or less, do you think is the best in terms of control (holds, etc.)?

    • @Tom_le_Grand
      @Tom_le_Grand  3 місяці тому +1

      @@Frankstylerome I have very thick and coarse hair so I need pomade more on the heavy side to start with. My favourite pomade does not exist anymore unfortunately. For now I use Lockhart's heavy or Reuzel Pink. Usually mix them with some Bone Crusher.

      David Pavlovich Hey there David. I practically never blow dry my hair. In episode 01 you can see what my hair looks like after a fresh cut and fully degreased. I don't know the exact figures since my barber uses shears mainly. The sides are tapered and on top it's fairly long because I have hair that wants to stick up all the time. The front/bangs are passed the tip of my nose but eyebrow length should do the trick also.

    I have a question. I can style a pretty good pomp, but after awhile my hair right in the front ("pomp") decides to just separate and my hair just splits instead of staying together. what can I do? I'm not sure if my hair naturally does it. I have thick straight hair.

      +SKILLZ707 I totally missed this question. It's hard to say what the problem is. What kind of pomade are you using? Sounds like you need a more heavy and sticky one. Make sure that everything is coated from root to top. Also the sun/heat can ruin a lot when you are using a petroleum based pomade.

      +How To Style A Pompadour - The Master Course what he's trying to say is that when he styles the pomp everything is perfect and all slicked back but after a while the hair will split in the middle and leave a part with no hair covering it. I know this is what he's trying to say because it happnes to me. When my hair is parted in the middle, you can't see it from the front or back view. Only people taller than me can see it unless I tilt my head down. I could send u some pictures if u don't know what I mean

    • @Tom_le_Grand
      @Tom_le_Grand  8 років тому

      +ExpertGaming7050 He was talking about his front splitting. You might be talking about a cowlick that is fighting you. I had that all the time in the beginning when I did a full pomp. The only solution was to get more length and I started parting right before that area and go against the grain (you do need a good length for that). Sometimes I also go along that line and comb the really stubborn parts where they naturally wanna go to. Difficult to explain in words. But also make sure you apply enough pomade. Get it evenly coated.Very important.

    • @Tom_le_Grand
      @Tom_le_Grand  8 років тому

      +MrFireDragon It all depends on what kind of hair and hairline you have. You need a symmetrical cut for a pompadour. Grow out the top and especially your bangs. For some guys eyebrow-length will do the trick. I think mine was till the tip of my nose in this video. Just experiment what works best for you and only copy the techniques and not the hairstyle itself. Thanks!
