At the sound of the warble fly cattle would run with their tails up. They would head for the nearest shed, stream or river. Apparently the fly would not follow them into the shed. The purpose of heading to the water is that the fly lays its eggs near the hoof where they hatch and the larvae then burrrow under the skin and travel inside the skin and via the esophagus emerge about six months later through the hide around the backbone of the animal, by standing in the water the fly could not lay the eggs close to the hoof. The holes made by the emerging larvae made the hide almost worthless. Many a cow ripped her teats on barbed wire trying to get away from the warble fly. Eradicated by use of the pour on doses.
All you needed was your pipe and slippers in this one Phil sitting in front of the peat fire reading farming memorabilia so Liv now you know what he will be like in another few years time😂
I may be wrong but I think the iodine is to specifically protect the thyroid gland.
My father remembers the cows in the stall and a man coming with a powder to put on their backs for the warble fly
A department man used to go around to farms and dose all the cattle in each farm for worbbles, with a pour on along their back
Well Done Philip
i still have a packet of those tablets from bertie aherns time in power. keep up the good work phil.
Your wise Uncle Ian and I agree about the Warble fly noise, if you watch some videos of cattle filmed using a drone you may see the cattle running with their tails up in the air this was know in parts of England Gadding. Even today cattle seem to be alarmed by the very distinctive noise.
Common sheep complaints, breaking out and dying!
😂
Sheep do 3 things, eat, shite & die in ridiculous ways😂
Hi Phil. An uncle of mine in 1982 bought 2 almost new Krone wagon and it use to take a day and a half to wagon in 14.5 acres of first cut silage pulling them with 2 David brown 1390 with the pump screwed up and a 50 B 2nd on the pit. Another man used to mow ahead of the with a David brown 1410 and an 8ft mower. He used to mow for them and another crew with a 7610 2nd and a precision cut and milk 40 cows for himself as well. Our tractor at the time was a David brown 880 and loader. Cattle were fed by eating at the silage pot face in front of an electric 2inch round bar. And at the time we thought machinery couldn’t get and bigger. How wrong were we. Greetings from Wexford
We found this video so so interesting more like it please Phill looked so cosy just loved 🥰 it.Wonderful so good 😊
Your family were always very keen on farming. Great interest in all the topics of the time
My granny had that beauty board in her kitchen its silly how somethings like that brings so many memories back
Hi Phil ,asbestos is only dangerous when broken , up here in Donegal they used asbestos pipes in the early 70s to carry the mains water, still in use to this day, hence so many burst pipes
Farmer Phil ,there was a fly that used to sting cattle ,i may not be correct it was called the gad fly
Best video yet a trip down memory lane I was born 56 years ago tomorrow and I remember a lot of that literature. The silage outfit may seem cheap but in 1978 my mom and dad built a four bedroom house for if I remember it right for four thousand pounds 👍
Lots of good memories. Are you going to give a house tour?
Old farming houses are very interesting, in Tuam they old people would leave a copy of the will somewhere maybe behind a hanging picture or in the bread bin
Some haul of stuff there Phil. Sellafield was the power plant, I remember the brother took a notion to eat one of them, thought they were sweets 😂 Fairly hard on the system!!
Hi Phil and liv another great video, I would love to be in that house with you its a treasure trove love watching
You have a lot of history in that house Phil.
Great video again Phil great to hear the old prices and photos when the worbel fly came around the cattle would run from the sound with their tails on their backs.
It's interesting that they sent the iodine tablets out to households in Ireland. I was told in Preston were I grew up. that the hospital always had a stock of enough of them to be given to everyone in the are if Heysham power station ever had a major problem.
Our neighbour ate all the iodine tablets as soon as they arrived
If you Google Joe Jacob and Marian Finucane iodine tablets you'll see why we got them very funny😂
A true treasure trove of information in the house. You'd be needing near on a million to start a silage contract outfit these days
Brilliant video, love looking through old farming brochures that my grandparents kept 👍👍
It's nice Phil to have all the memories of your uncle lan and lm delighted your going to live in the house best of luck to you both
Probably the best video u ever did , u basically explain how it was back 20, 30 years ago, never let the archive leave that house, looking forward to seeing what ye will do with it, I know it will be good
The Glass in stove will clean up like new with a Brillo pad & news paper &then repeat with normal glass cleaner, enjoying these videos 👍
Just use the ashes on a damp piece of kitchen paper will clean the glass
Cider vinegar mixed with some of ash clean off with the cider vinegar, its comes up like new
Great video phil as usual , we had a problem with warble flies there two years ago here in county waterford. We would have extremely quiet cattle but the warble flies drove them through wires and we had to move from the out farm they were in completely. My grandad saw one land on a bullock in the crush and had a hard job to keep him from jumping out over it. He said it was about an inch and and half long and made a buzzing sound sound similar to what uncle Ian was describing. Keep up the great work.
The Krone HSL silage wagon.. we ran two for over 20 years.. extremely easy to run.. Had one running on a David Brown 996 with a Massey Furguson 175 on a mower, a Ford 4000 on a lely rower and a Ford 4610 on the pit
Currently running two Krone Turbo silage wagons
had a turbo 3500 uptill last year made lovely silage .........getting a reliable driver to use the loader was what made me sell it in the end .......used to be at it on my own .......was just too slow ...irish weather will not wait for you .......had the wagon for 10 years and only broke one chain .......twisted the tailboard a few times but that was it ............if u had a bit of help one would be a no brainer ........way cheaper than bales
Far cheaper than bales for sure... A simple machine & easy maintain.. Bought a Turbo 3500 this year.. have a Turbo 2900 which is running perfectly and a Turbo 2500 which is being retired for spare parts.. An easy way to make pit silage
Fantastic memories as you pick up every piece of paper and booklet
Turf fire! Greta is crying in Swedeland! Good work.
Think we have the one on geese production somewhere. ACOT was the precursor to teagsc. Great finds, love this content. You should drag your dad in for one of them to go through another pile together
Still have a packet on top of the press. Lovely to see all the relics hope ye keep them safe for the next generation. ❤
I remember warbles, the lumps on the cattle that had the eggs under the skin.
Great video, I was encouraged by the Afghan Science teacher to send away Stamped Addressed envelope to the Department of Agriculture asking for their leaflets on potatoe varieties & growing etc. It was a great service and very educational. I’d also go to Ag Shows a collect leaflets on tractors and implements… hoarding them up and reading them over the following weeks… no doubt Uncle Ian did the same.
We always ammoniated our maize silage.also did soybean straw round bales, cattle loved them.thanks for your videos!
A tip for the fire/stove open the top damper on the door to help it burn faster especially if your turf/peat is very dry and once its burning well close the top damper/vent
Really enjoying these videos Phil!Keep them coming!
Love when your father with the 3690 and the jf900 on the paper its interesting to what you find we have a 100+ year old farmhouse next to us same stuff inside all the leaflets and shtuff
Phil we use to have our cattle tagged with a flectron tag for warbles
Liv does the house tidying and U relax by the 🔥
That nuclear site on the west coast of the UK was probably Sellafield, I live 5 mins up the road from it , I think I'd need more than what evers in that packet to protect me if it went tits up 🤣👍
i honestly believe if selifild was hit the show would be over.
Have a neigbour, who is gutting and now insulating a 150+ year old ex Hotel, one of the things they have done is made a clear top table and store their interesting finds in it.
Absolutely fantastic video phil & liv thanks a million I could what this for days..
Great video Phil jaysus it’s great to see all the old stuff
I'd love to see Class putting in the acre recommendation in a brochure to justify a brand new jaguar 😂
Hahah Fact 👆🏼
I had two krone silage wagons working in 1981! They were no good for Long draws. They were flimsy in the construction department.
Grate Phil keep them coming
Some amount of reading there Phil. I would be the same, reading more than sorting out. Great stuff to have though. All the best to you all.
Joe Jacob's iodine tablets. The interview with Marian Finnucane was classic "car crash" radio, both now RIP. I'd say You weren't long out of nappies Phil.....🤣🤣
Great one Phil some history in that house 👍👍
Great video again Phil
Great video yet again thanks
Nice video Phil keep up the good work
what i never got about the warble fly is we never did anything about them- in my corner of the woods. you'd see the dirty great big lumps on the cattle's back and that was it- the larvae had done all it's burrowing and making a mess and would pop out eventually. fricking disgusting! i don't remember ever seeing an actual fly.
Have a vague memory as a kid of
Cattle being treated for warbles
Think the man was spraying
The Cattle on the back! &for
Some reason something is telling
Me the department or a department( man) may have had
Something to do with it ..
The ould turf fire is hard bet 👌🏻
Interesting video and thanks ✔️
Very interesting video. Keep em coming
Great video. Be interested to know if you find any Dept articles from the 1960's and early 1970's that mention my uncle John Brady who worked in Dept and developed specific varieties of grain Irish agriculture.
Great video. How it used to be. 👍🏼
Good video
Nice video ❤
I think it's proper use of Implants not implements on the calf to beef system Ralgro was one of them
Remember uncle buying push off buckrake in 84 for 550 pounds think was rossmore the worble fly used sound like a 3040 john deere 6 cylinder reving is same old lads used say
That immersion being on is giving me the fear...
Crawford farms use ammonia straw for feeding cattle
I’ll have to have a look
Those iodine tablets were sent out just after 911 in case of a attack on selifeild
i honestly believe if selifild was hit the show would be over.
No firelighter in Longford Phil 😂
Well
it was for cherobyl
Is that fly similar to the gad fly. Cattle wud run when that heard them about
yes just a different name ............
Like something from a horror movie...must be where Ridley Scott got the idea for Aliens...hatching inside then burrowing out through the skin
👍
We need to see the wife more 😉😉
👍👍🇨🇮🇨🇮🙏🙏👌
Asbestos cement: So it's contained?
Second
Unfortunately asbestos is still legal to use in America
in sheets on a roof its not dangerous unless u cut it with a grinder ......its the dust off the asbestos cement that gets you ........
its not the only thing that is still legal to use over there
dont think you will ever get house cleared your finding too much of interest
Tell me you are stuck for content without telling me you are stuck for content. Boring
You could always not watch it.
🔔🔚 go play with yourself
Scroll up, princess
I found it interesting but I could spend hours in the evening sorting all those old brochures etc.
You so disrespectful your so boring.Farmer Phil is more intelligent and interesting than you.
The herdsman at our local stately home used to imitate the sound of a warble fly to get the cattle to come into the shed. Ohhhh boy did they move at a rate of knots as soon as he started buzzing!! Only problem was it also upset Himself's thoroughbreds and polo ponies. Many a broken fence! 😂
