- Learning to ride a bike can take weeks or even months of practice. But one nonprofit group is offering a class that uses an unusual method to teach kids to ride ... in as little as 15 minutes. Adam Rose reports from New York.
My 4 year old daughter and I just watched this video tonight. Went outside, practiced the technique and literally in 30 minutes she rode the entire block by herself! Thank you! She is so proud!
My daughter learned how to ride a bike today using this technique in less than an hour!! I had her watch the video, took the pedals off, spent about 30 minutes going down the driveway, had a break while I put them back on and spent about 10 minutes getting the feel of working the pedals. It really worked! She loves riding and is completely confident now. Thanks!!
This TOTALLY works! My 9 yr old has tried to learn and had some bad spills and honestly I thought she would never get on a bike again. But she tried without the pedals for just a few minutes and then she begged to pit them back on because she was so confident in her abilities. Thank you thank you thank you.
I kept thinking to myself "we should've tried this sooner."
hi I am from Sri Lanka, i was able to teach my 4 year old kid in 2 weeks by following this method, i have told all my friends about this method as well, thanks a lot guys, i remember how i struggled as a kid to balance, by falling off getting brused ect. this is the power of internet
Two summers my daughter tried to ride a bike. In one day, using this method, she is a bonified bicycle rider. Brilliant simplicity - well done!
Thank heavens for UA-cam and thank you for sharing. What a great technique!
Thank you soooooooo much. My daughter who is 8, learnt to ride her bicycle (which she has been trying to ride for soooooo many years,) in 30minutes. My hubby & I wish we saw your video earlier. Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much for posting this video, and thanks to all the people who replied for giving their feedback on how well the method has worked for their kids in real life. I am so gonna try this with my 6 year old and 3 year old who does not want to pedal but still would love to be able to move forward while on the bike. Thanks so much
Great video. After watching this, I taught my 5 year old son to ride in 5 mins. He fail once after long mins of continuous riding. His confidence was a little shake, but he picked himself up after constant encouragement and rode on.
Using this video as a guide, my son just learned how to ride a bike in less than an hour! Thanks!!
Two words: Thank you!
My daughter was struggling but just after an hour of practicing without her pedals, she did it. Thank you, this really works.
Thanks for posting these tips. awesome!
This was very informative and I really have to say, NICE! Thank you for being kind people and offering this for free plus putting here for all to see. I will use this technique with my daughter starting today.
Thank you so much..I've been hitting dead ends trying to teach my granddaughter over the last 2 years how to ride. With a heart problem I could not run along side of her. This is a great thing
It took 4 days for my teenage kid to learn and she'd never ridden a bike before. Great idea to learn the balancing part without the pedals first. Thanks for posting!
that's a great method. i tried it with my kid, just took off the pedals and let him push himself along until he could balance. stabilisers are no use because kids lean to one side and let the stabilisers do the work, so they don't get the trick of balancing the bike. nice work.
It worked for us our son is now free of wobbly stableizers and now Wants to ride ! Brilliant
Nice video... First night of trying to ride the bike without training wheels ended in crying and frustration. The second night started with 15 minutes without the pedals and then my 6 year old was asking for me to put them back on. 5 minutes later she was pedaling down the street on her own. Thumbs up!
My daughter is 5. This technique works. She learned to ride a bike in literally one hour. This was the first we have tried to teach her, I saw the video and thought I would give it a shot. Thanks!
This worked for our 7 year old in about an hour! Thank You!!!
Brilliant idea, will try this with my son at the weekend!
Guys THANK YOU!!!!' after almost breaking my back for 5 months and getting nowhere, this method worked un 5 days!! Thank u!!
Wow! This video really worked! 15 minutes, plus time to take off the pedals and....BOOM!!! The kid is riding!!! Thanks for posting!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much my daughter was riding her bike after 3 hours really Works.
Very good video. I actually watched something similar on a local BMX track yesterday, where small kids could go about on a bike that was made without pedals. So it makes a lot of sense. As a parent as I try to help I can over steer or misguide as I am trying to keep the child balanced on the bike.
My daughter was very apprehensive to ride her pedal bike. We followed this method and INSTANTLY she was balancing on her bike while coasting down our driveway. I put the pedals back on and she was gone. I was stunned how well this worked.
This method worked great for my son. This technique can be practiced using a sloped driveway if you dont have a downhill road to practice on.
I am 10, and I used this method to learn to ride a bike, and I learned in 2 days!
Thanks for this video! I tried this with my 6 year old and she was riding in under an hour!
I was trying to teach my sister to ride a bike and I told her to do this technique before I even watched this video. Only thing I was missing was taking off the pedals and lowering the seat. I actually raised it thinking it would help.
Well, same problem at me, just at 5 years... Now i'm 9 and bought a bigger bike and now i know very good to ride a bike, it's simple! Never is too late to learn something. Just try, and see how easy it is!
I learned to ride a bike when I was 4 years old and it was on an adult womens bike without the bar and I couldn't reach the seat so I stood up over the peddles but my 2 kids can't seem to get it and one is 8 (girl) and one is11 (boy) and maybe this technique will help them learn because they have new bikes that are just sitting in the garage for a year and a half now gathering dust. It's better than sitting in front of the tube playing video games all day and better exercise and so much fun!
AMAZING TRICK of taking off the pedals! Worked for our 8 and 6 year old boys within minutes!!! (after many other methods failed).
One important point - when we took off the pedals, we hadn't realized that there is a left and right pedal and we accidentally put them back on the wrong way and almost ruined the bike...thankfully we figured it out and our kids LOVE bike riding! Thank you!!!! (Can you teach them how to do homework now?)
This worked like a charm for my 7 year old son who had a bad experience last summer learning to ride a bike when he tipped over into a brand new cadillac and dented it. Since then he lost all confidence in himself when trying to ride his bike. We tried this method with him this morning and after a half hour of doing it he asked us to put his pedals back on and he was off and riding and smiling.
with the price of fuel the way it is this is a must!
WE are going to try this today. I have a 6 year old daughter who wants to learn how to ride her bike. She is so afraid of falling though. This is a great way to keep her from falling and having her be in charge of the bicycle. We will let you know later how this goes!!!!
Thats a cool way of teaching your kids to ride a bikw. I had to teach myself at the age of 19 and it was haed. I wish I new this techniq back then.
Worked wonders. Lived in Germany for a year and this is how the kids there learned. They had special wooden bikes for this...
What do you think of this Italian system? (smart training wheels) thanks for your comments!
excellent idea: worked for our 4-yr-old, no stabilisers now!
No one taught me how to do it. I just got on bike and off I went. Fell over few times but I learned and then I taught my brother to ride making him ride off little ramps or hills. That worked as well. It's all about balance.
Took my daughter no kidding...like 5 minutes to learn after doing this technique, i highly recommend it to anyone who is trying to teach their kids.
What a great idea! I've seen balance bikes, but I like this better. Why buy a special bike why you can make adjustments to a regular one? Can't wait to show my nephew!
that method does work one of the local shop owners in my town taught me that way i am 17 and picked it up in about 15 minutes
I am 12, I have bought a big ladies cycle and can't ride it...
This is because first of all, the seat is too tall to get up. Secondly, I have never rode a cycle before without balance wheels in the back. And lastly, no one's helping me to learn it!!!
I know watching these videos can help, and searching the internet too. And nowadays I get the help of my dad. Thank god.... I think I can learn to ride my cycle within a short time...
I used this technique on my 3 year old son back in 2002 he took about 15 mins
to work it out i did take off the crank set and rear sprocket and chain i called it a coaster i gave it to a friend for his boy to learn he done it in less than half an hour.
This method worked for my daughter in a weekend at her own pace.
i learned by myself in 4th grade, using the sloped driveway as a push and I learned in just 2 days.. I got a few bumps and scratches but at least I know how to ride a bike :)
once you learn to ride a bike and have not rode it for a while you still well never forget how to ride a bike it may take a few minutes to get the balance just right but you never forget how to ride a bike :)
I got my "bike wheels" back as an "over-fifty"-hadn't ridden in nearly thirty yrs.! Took me like 10 minutes to regain my sense of balance; and that was in our front yard with nothing but grass and gravel driveway (no pavement). 😊
_However_ , switching from a cruiser to a hybrid Trek (with faster, more narrow tires) a few months later was a bit disconcerting! I guess what I'm trying to point out is, that for young kids (and those just learning), wider tires are easier than skinnier ones. If all else fails, perhaps they should try one of those "fat" wheel mountain-type bikes.
i am going to try this tonight with my kid we have struggled with it for awhile now. It looks like it should work.
my brother cant learn i dont know if his bike is too big or small or he has nohand eye coordination he's 8 years old and 4'2 what size bike does he need ?
Just fyi you don't have to take the pedals off. Use a slightly too small bike, and have them just push to balance arround the pedals. Then teach them to pedal after they learn to balance. My son learned in two days this way and he has autism and is motor skills challenged.
Wow, that's amazing!! I've heard that autistic children can have a more difficult time learning; to where (for some) the best they've accomplished is to ride a youth/adult "trike bike" or another specially-modified cycle. Congratulations on your success with your son!
hahaha wow, im from the bronx, when i was learning my father had is friends drive up and down the street, he put me on and pushed the bike into the street, and said ride or die choose one... i can ride a bike now..., but im using wifi from heaven to tell you this lmao j/k
I learnt in less than an hour when i were 6. My cousin took 1 stabaliser off at a time and i couldnt ride it until i got on a hill then it was so easy to balance... from then i could always ride a bike. Try sitting on a bike on a ramp with ure legs up and if you can balance you know how to ride a bike!
gonna actually try this tomorrow on my mates house
@ohenenorb how did it go? :)
Guys this is pretty easy, no matter what your age is, just get a bike focus in front of you, steady it and put your right foot on the pedal and push the pedal, until the bike goes put your second foot and continue pedaling fast and don't stop pedaling so you can maintain your balanced, I knew how to ride a bike within 2 days alone.
I tried this method, and it worked!!!
I learnt how to ride in 20 minutes being taught with this method!!
My son learned how to ride his bike with this technique. Amazing technique!
thax thats very halpfull
:)
Cool!
right..and my neighbours will laugh at me...that's very great idea mate
i was taught the old way. top of a grass hill! a little push and some advice. pedal or fall. i picked pedal/!
Reminds me of that (1999) movie, _Walking Across Egypt_ -starring Ellen Burstyn (as Mattie Rigsbee) and Johnathan Taylor Thomas (as Wesley, an underprivileged juvenile delinquent). They were both standing on a small pier, at the edge of a lake, when Wesley finally (and _very_ reluctantly) admits he'd never learned to swim...
So Mattie unexpectedly pushes him HARD off the edge of the pier! and he's screaming and carrying on, flailing his arms... "That's it!" shouts Mattie. "Wave your arms! Kick your legs!" She's "demonstrating" in mid-air, while her elderly neighbors (unaware of what's going on) are watching her from a distance behind her: "She's finally lost it!" the old man says to his wife.
Meanwhile, Wesley gets the hang of the "dog paddle," and he's all laughter and smiles. Mattie tells him, "Okay, you can stand up now..." 😆
i got 4 sisters and i remember teaching them to ride their first bikes..LOL
trying to teach my 7yo cousin how to ride a bike. she's too scared and the just doesn't understand how to balance... definitely trying this out today! would've helped me when i was learning, too... i learned when i was 5 but it took me insanely long haha
5 minutes and my 7 year old boy was wanting his pedals back on. Another 5 minutes and off he went. Now to work on his twin sister.
my daughter is 9 and she knows how to ride a bike really well
Im 14 and Im watching this because I dont know how to ride a bike. Im on the verge of tears

They didn't have this when I was a kid!...It was called busting your ass all the time and eventually you'll get it lol
My goodness. After months of struggling my daughter rode her bike unaided for the first time in a little over an hour using this method.
Umm, do they not have helmets in the US???????
I taught myself to ride a bike and I was 19 or 20, can't remember. I never had a bike if my own because my old bike was left at my aunts house. Anyway, I was teaching myself to ride my nieces bike which was way to small for me, then I beged my momto let me get a bike. Well one day I decided I would try and ride on the grass and that didn't work, so I went out on the pavement and i coukd do it.
first time i tryed was when i was 5 on just a 2 wheeled bike. I did so awsme. All i could do was fall to my sides. lol Then i managed to go strait.
Then slowly started to spin.
Then started riding round trees. Then managed to ride good enough. Then i became a mountain biker then i became a pro if i may say so... Anyways this vids cool. Well done.
i am 17 and i never learned how to ride a bike.. i really want to thoo.. i really like seeing people riding it and think it's enjoyable but i never learned :(
I'm 7 and I just learned how to ride a bike but with two wheels
I must try with my 5 year old son
you know how i learned ride a bike.i'm just ride on mauntain down and all:DD
I learn things just by watching people. I learned to swim and ride a bike by watching people on tv and on the streets.
I remember when I was 9 and learned riding it with no problems on my 6th day...
It only took me 2 days to learn! :D
Uuuuuuntil I almost broke my knee.
Good thing I still can ride.
i learnt how to ride a bike when i was 9!
i learnt when i was like 3 thanks dad :D
I was not quite five when I asked my Dad to take the training wheels off my first bike (it was a purple 16", don't know the brand)... I got it balanced on my own that same day in the neighborhood alleyway behind our home. As encouragement, Dad would yell, "There she goes! Real fast! Tootin' the horn!" lol. 🏘 🚲
Mükemmel bir yöntem... Önce denge ve sonra gerisi geliyor...
18-year-old here. I know that feel, bro.
well, i'm 19 and i don't know how to ride a bike, but i haven't even tried it, maybe i'll need to learn for my next job, don't know
