Lol I was only thinking about this the other day. I’ll have to have a go at the main solo then. That way I can listen to yours when you do it and see if I got it right. I’ll have to try them on alto though because I still haven’t found a Tenor that suits yet. I’ve had my Mk6 alto for years but I don’t remember it being this difficult to buy horns back then. But I guess the market wasn’t flooded with cheap Chinese ‘student’ models. This seems to mean you can’t find a decent Tenor for less that 2.5k nowadays.
Alto sax newbie here: Low B is played with the right-side of the table key, and low C# is played with the left-side of the table key so in moving from one to the next I get a C natural (right pinky on the second key out) in between, any tips to avoid that note? Guessing tonguing?
Hi Algo, it's probably the hardest thing to so on saxophone, there are rollers which should help you slide over, but if you want to use a trick from flute, wipe the side of your nose with your left pinky. This will put a thin layer of oil on the tip of your pinky and make it easier to glide across the keys.
Love the vids Jamie. Very encouraging and your enthusiasm is clear. Anything from Diamond Life really, it's my all time go to album, but my particular favourite is Frankie's First Affair (middle solo). Also, have you considered Hazel O'Connor - Will you? That's also a great one and then there's Ronnie Ross' solo at the end of Walk on the wild side (Although that's on Baritone I believe). Anyway, the list could go on. Thanks and keep them coming.
Hi Tony. I probably won't do anything else from Sade in the near future apart from covering the main solo in this one. Definitely doing Will You at some point, although it's so long it might have to be a special mini course or something. Walk On The Wild Side is great too. Thanks for your support! J😊
@@GetYourSaxTogether Cheers chap. 'Will you' is a monster and should probably get a public health warning for danger of an anuerysm. I look forward to it!
That obviously depends on what you're doing and how good you are, so clearly I can't give you a specific answer. However, as a general rule, put your metronome a at speed that you can manage what you're trying to play without fumbling it. If you fumble it, slow the metronome down, otherwise you're just practicing mistakes. Hope that helps and let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you. J😊
are you playing your sax hook intro and your middle sax solo in the key of D minor same as the original smooth operator record from the radio ? or have you transposed these sax solos to a different key from the original ? as i need to be able to play these sax solos on piano and be able to play along to my backing track

I know this song was made for tenor sax, so is it better to transpose the song for alto and play it to sound like the original or play it with same keys of the tenor instruments? I know starting from low E would not be as original as starting with low B, but. however playing it on the Alto starting from the low B has some issues that I would like to clarify. what happens when we come to the D in first octave, I always heard we should never use the palm keys without the octave key but here we see many playing the D with just the palm key, so is that ok ? I would like to understand if it is ok sometimes or never ok to play using the palm keys without the octave key in certain situations like this. Sure you can play middle D with the palm key and no octave key. It’s an alternative to using the standard fingering. In terms of playing the song on alto or tenor, that all depends if you have to play with a backing track or a band. If you don’t, then sure, play the tenor notes on alto.

Smoochy sax solo? Hmmm, Dave Boruff on Richard Marx's Endless Summer Nights.
Nice!
This right here is the moment you will be glad you never swapped your mark vi lol
Exactly!!
@@GetYourSaxTogether I don't ANY saxophonist who can rattle off ALL the solos like you can. Its gonna put you right up there with all the greats. When i saw the sax shop link about swapping the mk6 my heart sunk. I have had some beautiful saxes in my life from the eastman 52nd street to the Julius Keilwerth sx90r and I wish i hadnt sold them on. I would save you that pain if i could. A Selmer vi belongs in your hands brother.
Hello Mr Anderson, I'm new to learning to read and play music. I have chosen the alto sax. I love your channel and method of teaching. I have a question about the end of the first phase of smooth operator. The last two notes A, B with a slur. On the backing track section those two notes are written B, C#. Which is correct? Thanks so much.
OMG, you are 100% correct, I'm so sorry. The last two alto notes of phrase 1 (at 5:11 5:19 5:36 and 5:45) should be A and B, NOT B and C#. Many apologies and thank you for pointing it out. J:-)
Hello from France !
I’m a school teacher, and I’m also a three year sax student. I love the way you explain the nicest saxophone solos, and Sade Adu’s ones are really great.
I’d like to know if you explain the other great solo that begins in this Smooth Operator at 2’39, the trickier one...
Thank you in advance, I’m eager to learn and practice !
Marie-Hélène
Thanks for your comment and bonjour! I'm gonna do the solo bit at a later date, yes. Thanks for watching! J😊
