That Monopoly Longest Game Ever version sounds like they took every aspect of Monopoly that people tend to dislike and capitalized on those features. lol You hate what?! More of that!
Fortunately I don't own and haven't played any of these games. People need to quit buying games and backing Kickstarters just because they have cool miniatures. Miniatures do not make a bad game good.
I dont know "Sherlock: The Tomb of the Archaeologist", but I played 4 cases of the series (not solo!) and we enjoyed it a lot. For me it's a perfect little riddle (60-90 Minutes). And I would say, that the system works. The game is not about putting away cards but about solving a mystery.
Hasbro Exec: "People, we've printed Monopoly in every theme that I've heard of. What do we do next? How does one make a NEW board game?" [Two employees run into each other out in the hallway, each carrying a copy of Monopoly.] Hasbro Exec: "Eureka!"
The Sherlock games are the only ones I get my little Miss Marple wife to play with me and it's actually really fun to discuss. And you can/must use the information you threw away when the cards are empty, you just have to remember. Try with more people and the right rules.
Yes, they are good. Some even really great. But there are also some boring ones and one completely horrific (4th of July). Anyway, I am with you. Will continue to play them...
We like The Dwarves. We only played it with the expansions so I don't know how good it is without it. Yes It is a bit random (dice). But for a light coop game that is OK imho. We really like how the enemy movement works.
I scrolled way to much to find a comment about The Dwarfs..... But I understand the problem. If you do not have read the books to know what it is all about it is a bit hard to get into this world. I like this game, every round is different depending on you style of gaming. I even got my miniatures painted.
1. I really like negative Reviews! Balances out all the blind praise over the same games, so thanks, because its important to stay critical, imo! Warn us! Show us BOTH sides! Thats why I like your channel! 2. Sherlock ist NOT a Solo-Game. With 2 or 3 players its a really fun deduction game, though! BUT the players must want to discuss and think, because all the clues CAN be drawn from the cards, but if just ONE player does not care, the whole game stinks and falls apart... (Some people say they play the cases in ~30 minutes. That tells me, they didnt even pause to talk and think... same with the Undo Series) 3. My negative review goes to: Your mic! :P Sorry, but I just cannot stand the scraping noises :(
Hey first of all I have to say that I love your Videos! Your reviews often exactly hit my taste and I made a habbit out of giving your opinion a high credibility! I really like the sherlock games and I think you would also like them if you gave them another chance and would not play it solo!!! Actually it makes a very good game for more players like 4 - 6 but I have also played it as two. The whole idea (and what makes the game so good as I understand) is that you first soak up all the information: you read the cards and try to remember them (we rarely play cards out face up), while everyone will only get a piece of the big picture such that everyone will create his/her own understanding. The big fun now is to discuss based on your information and comming up with theories of what happened. People state ideas/theories and everyone tries to finde evidence to support it or information to contradict it. 50%-85% of the game is talking after you played all the cards. I'm a scientis (mathmatician) and I have to say that you can really solve these games by collecting all the remembered information, while using logic and some "kitchen psychology". The one you played is on the weaker end. Try " Laboratory" it's outstanding! Please try this one with a group of people that are in for some heavy deductive discussion. I can absolutely see that the game looses all oft it's appeal when playing it solo. ;) Have fun! :)
Dwarves is an excellent game. Really thematic, all the cards have story fragments and the enemies have a really unique way of invading the mountains. Tip: watch Rahdo's Runthrough. It is random with dice Rolls but so is Eldritch Horror, which Tom loves. So why no love for the Dwarves? 😉
The Campaign for North Africa: Desert War is so complex that when we were in high school we took three months to complete it. And he mentioned the game Talisman which never ended and was poorly created. When we played it, we would pick the person who wasn't a complete dick during the game was awarded the winner.
3 things !. I have a copy of the Big Box version of the Dwarves and I like it. More cards, more things to do, more minis, and the enemies are now wooden meeples. 2. I get where you are coming from with Monopoly - for such an expensive game (editions of Monopoly tend to retail for about £30 here in the UK), the component quality is poor. 3. I looooooove your tie!
Great videos. Always funny to see how people criticise for too much negative content, but yet this has 2-3 times the amount of views of the positive video released at the same time. I remember looking at Dead Throne and all these nice components tacked onto a roll and move game.
Really liked the vid. I want to hear honest but negative opinions about games as well. Not only positive. Helps in sifting through the flood of games coming out (because they all have people who rave about them).
Tom's so wrong about Sherlock don't get fooled and play it 2+ in an easy way you'll have fun. The mentioned case was easy peazy too nothing random at all 😅 getting the questions right is the way we do it the point accounting afterwards can be skipped as it's in fact random.
As a rural mail carrier, let me say that missing someone for an item that needs a signature is way more work than just getting the signature. I truly hope that's not the theme of the game.
Agreed. My business delivers direct to our clients and a clean, on-time signed-for delivery or collection is 100 times less work than cutting corners and messing things up.
@5:07 I could seriously not disagree more. I think the graphic design on this game is beyond amazing. Love it. (Unless you didn't mean the *artwork* by graphic design) And I had a lot of fun playing this as a lighter arena battle game. Gorechosen is better, but it was fun.
I actually like Sherlock a lot and dont see how it could be played solo. We play with 3 people and enjoy the experience. And I do suggest you watch the Gamenight episode to see an example on how it can work well. The game is not only about playing or discarding the relevant cards, it is about trying to figure out the case independent of whether you chose to play the right cards. And discussing them, even if they were discarded, to try to solve the case. A bit of memory dependent, but usually ok as the theme relationship helps remember the important aspects of the cards discarded. I strongly suggest you try a few more cases in a group if you didnt already.
The Monopoly thing almost seems like a big thumb in the eye to the gaming hobby community. Like “we’ve heard everyone talk about how bad and long Monopoly is, let’s really show them what bad and long looks like. People will still buy it because it says Monopoly on the cover!”
I think it likely a straight up joke. Like it is't even meant to be played. As Tom said, an awful lot of money to pay for something that isn't really intended to be even taken out of the box.
Wow. Shocked to hear about Dead Throne. I backed every single one of their Kickstarters before cancelling in the last 48 hours. The concept seemed cool (and definitely felt like a “passion project game”, which I like). But asymmetric multiplayer really killed it for me. Someone is forced to play the bad guy. I guess I dodged those bullets.
I like the idea of Escape Pods and it sounds like it could have potential just poorly executed sounds like. Maybe be able to shoot each other and drop off guys like a capture the flag type game. Oh well I'm glad there are games like Galaxy Trucker to scratch that space ship game itch
"Sherlock: The Tomb of the Archaeologist" is actually bad and it has a really boring story. However, it did enjoy "Sherlock: Last Call" very much. It has a great story twist! Also, I think it is actually better with more people not worse. That way you can keep cards you are not sure about and listen to what the other players reveal first.
The Sherlock games work quite well with 3-4 players. You play or discard more or less sure good or bad clued and keep the ones you are not sure until another player gives a hint that makes you decide. And of course it is a scoring game based on how many answers you can provide with just the cards you decided to keep. But I would not play it solo, as you will read all the cards!
I really enjoy this format but the concern I have is that it might be hard to find a game in a collection of reviews like this since the title doesn't list the games covered. It might be worth doing these videos for groups of 3-4 games so you can label the games in the title to make it easier to find the coverage if you are searching for a specific game.
Actually, tom doing this brings attention to these games. Maybe someone out there, because of Tom's bad reviews, gets to play and like the game. It would be worse for game designers if Tom just didn't mention the game.
ua-cam.com/video/bVSaiL4ML5o/v-deo.html i do not. I agree with rahdo. Toms rant ist really without substance. Interestingly enough he found Defenders of the realm "exciting". Sorry - this is a clickbait-format.
OMG - monopoly.... has to be a joke surely. I am the same Tom, absolute love hate relationship with Monopoly and various variants and even similar games (in a way) like Careers and Poleconomy (the latter I still like prob coz it has my version is Australian feel with old 80's iconic companies, most if not nearly all no longer exist here). There short Negative (and Positive) reviews are awesome Tom, please keep providing them, sometimes I will see a game never really heard of but you might have covered on this type of video, and it is the only way I really find out much about it (that's a big compliment by the way in how you explain why its not good in your opinion) and helps me make a more informed decision. YES there will always be games you dislike and others like, that is just all part of what makes up human nature. Some like red, some like blue, some prefer dark others prefer light, but that is how the world runs. I really dislike Cartographers even though everyone else seems to love it, but yet I like listening to their views them vice a versa to me, different perspectives and negative reviews have a great place for us to make, as I said above, more informed decisions, please keep these coming.
If you're going to play a "stupid" and "random" fantasy dungeon crawl, I recommend Dungeon - a remake of a D&D styled game. I have to say, I do not like this game even though I bought it. I bought it only because I had fond memories of it when I was a kid. But, it's one of those games that can be 'fun" with the right alcohol consumption. ;)
Sherlock is such a great game, but should only be played with 3-4 players. And dwarves: i dont know anything about the game but of you Roll Dice so many Times, that will balance the Luck pretty much, even more than if you roll very few times.
I agree that Brutality isn’t bad. I just wish the board was bigger. Also I never had a situation where where you move slowly and just “plink”. Every game I have played is quick.
Mike Slaybaugh Don’t know who you are replying to, but... 1) I did not KS this. I bought it after the fact. 2) I have backed plenty of crappy KS’s and have no problems indicating that I made a bad purchase. 3) I never said the game was perfect. In fact I talked to the designer and told him about my wish that the board was bigger. It is too much like a knife fight in a phone booth the way it is. 4) The only advantage for a small board is that it doesn’t take long to get to your opponent, so that counters one of Tom’s criticisms. The game is not perfect by any means but it is nowhere as bad as Tom makes it out to be. Different strokes for different folks. At least he gives reasons for his dislike of the game rather than give some pithy comment about KS backers...
I also think Brutality is absolutely fine. And it plays rather quickly in my opinion. Damage dealers are down after 4 - 6 hits and there are little healing opportunities (or none depending on the card draw). Also the theme of 'brutal combat' is quite present in the arena design, on card texts and ability names.
I agree all the Sherlock series games are too random. As a gamer, I don't like them very much. But my non-gamer wife and daughter enjoy them. I would definitively never play them solo, because what's interesting about the game is building a plot together. And since it's so small, it's great to take it on a trip. That said, I think this is the least interesting story in the series.
Hasbro, about 15 years ago, had made a study about Monopoly. It stated somewhere that 80% (going from memory here) of Monopoly games sold were actually never played. Once you know that, you understand their marketting for the game. Every year, they put out a new Monopoly version specifically made to have the media talk about it. Always on the cusp of being offensive, but not quite. A few exemples: Monopoly cheaters edition, Monopoly millenials edition, Monopoly women/feminists edition (where female players had an advantage). This "longest edition", Tom is right. It was never meant to be played. It's a joke product... but Monopoly is sold at an impulse buy price. And it will sell because of that. Again, 80% of people buying Monopoly don't actually play it. They just make new versions to be talked about. When you talk about it, it sells the game. Nothing else to see here.
OK, but what's the point of buying a game that will never be played? I mean, I know there are many game collectors who own hundreds of games which have mostly never been played, but that's a different situation. Monopoly buyers are mostly not game collectors and not even hard-core gamers. So, why is this constant buzz around a box of garbage, which is not even used by the owners?
I see the appeal in the longest game ever monopoly. However the reality of it is pretty obvious to those that would watch the dice tower to begin with. Not the worst thing ever. But a waste of time, space, effort, money, friendships, ect.
This was very entertaining ^_^ Seriously though, it's kind of sad to see that EVERY single one of these 'bad' games has at least one really interesting aspect to it but is ruined by one or more (or all of the other) design flaws...
that monopoly is not for play, probably just collectors who wants to collect all of them. :') no way that is still playable! If it can e played like that, than next year they should add 3 more layer, so have 5 round each boards! :) By the way should not be money involved, just buy properties with dice roll, and pay with dice roll to carry on. Result = endless Monopoly :'D

I love these reviews .... we need them at least once a month
The Dwarves imo is one of the better co-ops. For me it has a lot of theme as it features a lot of events of the book the game is based on.

I would definitively never play them solo, because what's interesting about the game is building a plot together. And since it's so small, it's great to take it on a trip.
That said, I think this is the least interesting story in the series.
That new Monopoly game made me chuckle 😂
Monopoly (outside of the Empire version) is the only board game I will actually outright REFUSE to play with anyone.
Playing that version of Monopoly should be used as torture.
Could you try to find that survey again? I couldn't find it unfortunately.
I remember when Tom's negative reviews were the most entertaining videos on The Dice Tower
Just thinking about that longest game ever version of Monopoly is giving me an anxiety attack.
I see the appeal in the longest game ever monopoly. However the reality of it is pretty obvious to those that would watch the dice tower to begin with. Not the worst thing ever. But a waste of time, space, effort, money, friendships, ect.
These videos make me Oddly happy
Monopoly the longest game sounds like a good thing to put in a white elephant
I wanna play dwarves so much right now
I really like the Sherlock games.
I was hoping for a Oneupmanship rant :D
I thought the sherlock games were very clever. You have to follow the evidence collectively to what you think the result of the case is.
The dead throne game sounds like tales of Arabian nights without the meticulous planning.
Nice idea for a video, but you really need to work on the sound quality. The nonstop sound of the mic rubbing against the tie is maddening.
Monopoly Longest Game Ever is perfect for social distancing. Everybody, stay on your side of the board!
I was gonna say, seems perfect for the person with not enough Monopoly and too much free time, a person who surely must exist during this time.
I prefer my daughter's 'Junior monopoly' - it's won in 30mins...
Loving the hate on Monopoly.
I can already see a charity event doing a monopoly event with that game
This was very entertaining ^_^
Seriously though, it's kind of sad to see that EVERY single one of these 'bad' games has at least one really interesting aspect to it but is ruined by one or more (or all of the other) design flaws...
8:25 lol sounds like Candyland but fantasy themed
The game is called "Brutality" and you *plink* away at each other ?
Maybe rename it 'Nerfed' and redo the art a bit ;-)
Playing Sherlock solo is a mistake, it should have 4 players for fun: 9/10 for the whole franchise from me
I have feeling Tom gave that Monopoly an instant -100/10
-10?
Way to give Monopoly Longest Game Ever the ol' Streisand Effect.
that monopoly is not for play, probably just collectors who wants to collect all of them. :') no way that is still playable! If it can e played like that, than next year they should add 3 more layer, so have 5 round each boards! :)
By the way should not be money involved, just buy properties with dice roll, and pay with dice roll to carry on. Result = endless Monopoly :'D
Burn the Longest Monopoly!
Seriously? Dwarves?! 🥳
Be better if you had the box in the upper left like you did the 8 Positive reviews.
Am I the only one who can't get enough of Tom trashing stuff?
😂
Monopoly longest game is a legacy game, in that you play it once in a life time because that’s how long it takes, a lifetime. Lol
Give me the monopy game I'll finish it challenge accepted
I checked Slack at the 2:39 mark, lol
