- We are at the top of the grade on the Conrail Reading line. It is a constant grade from Allentown yard, to were we stand here at Emmaus, PA. We catch both east and west traffic of both Conrail, and the Delaware & Hudson using trackage rights over the line. You'll see classic old power of EMD, GE, and even an Alco shows up.
Thanks for watching, and hope you enjoyed it.
God Bless

Absolutely something than can no longer be repeated today!
I miss the early days of CONRAIL! Hard to believe it was 41 year's ago!!
My friend and I railfanned Emaus hill in 2005! Though it was no longer CONRAIL. At least we could enjoy NS action there!
I always liked Emaus Hill! Not sure if they use helpers on there anymore. Most big trains back in the 70's did. I guess with todays high HP units, they don't even brake a sweat! LOL. I haven't been there in years. Thanks for watching Tom...
@@1jackdk Your welcome Jack! Those NS GE -9s weren't struggling. But they were working pretty hard to concur Emaus hill.
Tons of executives. Great Video
Love video i was born in 1978 and ownel see railways in 80s 90s and today wow nicely done.
Thanks Johnathan. Glad you enjoyed it, and glad I could share this old stuff for everyone to enjoy.
The dust at 7:13 leads me to believe someone neglected to close the angle cock before cutting off, note how the motors stop on a dime.
Back when emmaus was a nice small borough where everyone sat out on their porch and watched out for each other
As a resident its still pretty much like that.
Thanks for the cool video I was born in 77 and I recognize some of the buildings in the video are still there today. I wish I would have went with the railroad for my career
Glad you enjoyed it. Years ago, it wasn't easy to get on with the railroad. You either had to know someone, or a family member got you in. I wanted to hire on with the EL back in the 70's, but settled to the trucking industry, which now I am retired from after 47 years. Thanks for watching... BTW, I will be near here in June for the big truck show at Macungie. I'll will be bring the 85 Superliner that I just purchased, and I'll be able to watch the railroad at the same time. A win-win for me...
My uncle worked for Conrail and PBNE so that could have been my way in I am guessing. I grew up in Alburtis and the mainline was in my back yard. I have tons of pics I took as a kid, I love looking back at them
Thanks Jack for publishing these great videos. The sounds are wonderful and having lived through the years of transition from the LV, RDG, EL, and D&H into Conrail and PC, these videos bring back many fond memories. Just hearing those SD45 horns again is great. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed the clips Richard. I sure do miss that era. Thanks for watching...
Jack, this footage is really special to me. I was just a teen during these years. Back then I had little interest in trains.. I would see D&H running where I lived in upstate NY (Albany, Schenectady, Troy area)..Now many years later I've developed a love for trains and seek out footage such as you provide. I model D&H primarily with a sprinkle of nearly all New England roads just because. Until recently I just collected and ran what I liked without any thought about actual routes or operations. Now here I find myself wanting to focus on that era gone by. So, this footage really hits a chord with me. Being able to see actual footage of these older engines..and hear the horns of that day. Most everyone today is doing modern railroads..and fallen flags are harder to come by. Maybe that's why it appeals to me..yearning for that day gone by. Thank you for sharing.. Tom
Glad you enjoyed it Thomas. I see by the amount of views I get for things I post. 70's - 80's are a big hit, 90's -00's do good, but it seems that 2010 and newer doesn't have a big impact, unless its something rare. Seems that everyone takes video now a days, and its the same stuff over and over. All the good stuff, 1st and 2nd gen locomotives are gone for most part, So sad. Atleast there are a few of us that keep putting up this classic stuff. Thanks again, and thanks for watching..
NICE: 4 GP30s in a row!
Back to the alco era eh? It's nice to see the Delaware and Hudson. I went around in 1978, and a few other times, like 1957 to see a lot of this
Wouldn't it be nice to go back. Oh mannn!!!
Yes, definitely
Very cool! I love seeing trains in those days with all the mergers occurring, the old power you never see on Class I Railroads, and those perfect horns that don't even sound like anything you hear trackside today. Even though i wasn't alive in 70's 80's and 90's i still have an attachment to old diesels a little more than steam. Anyway, thanks for sharing and great footage!
Thanks HCRf, Glad you enjoyed it. It was a great era to be trackside. Thanks for watching...
Awesome these pictures thanks for sharing
Love your old videos! Takes me right back to when I was a kid! I would have been 15 in 1978.
Thanks bobozo. Glad your enjoying. Hope to get some more up this week, if I get the time. Thanks for watching...
I remember seeing GP-30's 2216,2217, and 2225 working on the A32/41 on the Robbinsville secondary as well as GP10 7573. Really takes me back to a simpler time.
Priceless material. Excellent video Jack.
Thanks iusetano. Priceless for sure! Never to be repeated! Sorry to say.
Another Gem thanks Jack.
good one jack, think when I was younger back on 88 or 89 I saw a black CR unit on the east penn drill coming through Allentown and I'm almost sure it was black with a can opener logo.
Don't recall ever seeing a black unit with the can-openner DD. Anything is possible. I do remember shooting and AP1 coming down the Lehigh Valley with N&W for power. When it ducked under the RDG line, a Conrail train crossed over top heading into the yard, and it had the Conrail U30C with the crooked can-openner. That was an odd ball also. Thanks for watching ...
jackmp294.5™ thanks for the info jack and you described one of my favorite fanning spots but I guess it was just the first NS unit I ever seen, definitely wasn't the rs3l horn I was used to hearing, but at the time I was only around 4 years old.
Dangerous Dave I worked as a cook in 1971 or whole blood from Indiana 92 now still going glad everybody's happy out there we're 10 years come hoaglin to Midwest Towing you see those you probably know me but I'm not speaking my name bye keep it up
Absolutely first class "retro" videos, hope you have more of these.
Thanks oldtoot. Glad your enjoy this classic old stuff. And yes. I have tons more. I have 11 400' reels in my collection that I have taken in the 70's. Some good stuff, some not so good. You know how those old movie outfits where. I'm going through them a little bit at a time, and trying to get them up on UA-cam. This old film deteriates after time, and I notices, so does the VHS tapes, and I have 56, 2 hour tapes I have to edit as well. Thanks for watching...
great video! nice to see some old footage of classic trains from my home area.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
God bless you, Jack.
Thanks brother, and God Bless you as well.
Love the helper cutoff on the fly. Saw 2 Pennsy logos on locomotives in Conrail's third calendar year. In Ohio all units I remember had mating worms by 1976. Note how overbuilt the railroad is, with sidings on both sides of double track. Today that level of traffic would warrant single track. Just look at CSX going north out of the Atlanta metro area or NS going west, SSE or northeast.
Its amazing how the railroads, especially CSX has gutted there systems. Thanks for watching...
Hey Jack,
Again you hit the jackpot. This was so fun to watch! Boy those times must've been amazing to be around in. Thanks for another great video brother and God bless.
-Don
Thanks brother Don! Hope to get some more up soon, if time permits. Take care bud, and God Bless...
Awesome footage and great sound ( until the malfunction ).
Love those GP30'S and all the EMD motive power. Thanks once again Jack for your great work !
Greetings from Southern California, regards brother!

My Dad had a super 8 sound movie camera. But NO WAY was he going to let me, a 14 yr old kid, use it to film trains! Sigh. Oh well. Good stuff as usual Jack!
Those were the interesting days- you could see just about anything come by. I miss that sound of the old jointed rails, and trains still look weird to me without the caboose. I noticed there was a man at the throttle of the ALCO cut in on the second train. The MU connection must not have been operational.
Thanks Jack.
Jack..........liked that region and time so much that I modeled it in my basement in HO gauge.
I hear yah Richard. I didn't go as far as the Conrail era, but I do model Penn Central just before the Conrail takeover. I pool power with the EL, and some other roads to add interest. I especially like the DM&IR, and run an All-rail train like PC did in the winter months when the lakes froze over. Uusually have a PC leader with DM&IR SD38AC, DMIR taconite cars and DMIR caboose. Make for an interesting train.
This is excellent. Thank you for sharing.
Turbo problems on CCRU-1's SD35?
For working up a grade, many of these trains still seem to be making time.
to the right on the 4th St bridge is the emmaus movie theater, and movie nite was not complete unless a train went through 😄😄
That's neat Art. I don't know if I could watch a movie there. If I heard some RR action, I'd probably be heading to the door. LOL Thanks for watching...
Fantastic footage of sights long gone. By chance, do you have any footage from this era from the south west?
Nothing that early on movies TTT. I ran over the road, and have tons of 35mm slides all over the west and southwest. They are from about 1979 till about November of 84. Then after that, it was just yearly trips to the west for picture taking expeditions. Thanks for watching...
I wonder what these clips would have looked like in the steam era.
The real days of railroading not the stupid techno stuff we have today stupid throttle restrictions and dumb countless rules.
Going to set up a gathering to watch this😂
5:15 lol red gyro?
The red gyro cost us a six pack of beer! LOL, and well worth it. Thanks for watching...
I wish I was born in the 70s🙁
That was a great time to be trackside Luke. At least you have these old clips to fall back on to see what it was like. Thanks for watching...
jackmp294.5™ I know life would've been harder back then, but at the same time, it was... simpler.
these poor kids today have no idea what a A B B A set of F7s looks like and SOUNDS like!
old alcos and ge locos were something.
i even saw a few fm and lima engines. RUNNING.
i knew a guy who quit serious photoing in 1975,,,why? because B&O retired their F7s.
through the years i saw him a few times,,,shooting trains, but he just didnt have it anymore.
likewise, i quit taking photos 20 years ago too.
seeing the old stuff from years ago is depressing.
btw, the old friend is about 85 years old and still kicking.
Nice!
What type of unit is at 4:36?
It was a SD35 and a GP38. Thanks for watching.
jackmp294.5™ knew the gp 38 wasn't sure on the sd unit.
What is this "movie camera" you speak of?!?!? LOL
LOL. Some antiquated piece of equipment that can be found in some antique
shops. Thanks for watching...
