Great video! Helped solidify what we had been discussing: that you are not offsides AFTER the ball is kicked. In other words, if you are on side when the ball is kicked your way, and you beat the defender to the ball, it is only fair that you NOT be called offside. Otherwise the defense would always have the benefit. THANK YOU!
@2:41 is a good example of why the offside call is hard. Interfering does not just mean touching the ball. If your movement causes a defender to react in a way that they may have not of and you are in the offside position, that CAN be called an offside offence. Different referees have different views on this. Typically referees who play soccer are more lenient. As far as I'm concerned, if you are in an offside position when that ball is kicked don't run, definitely don't sprint, toward the ball. You are gambling with the call.
Thanks for producing and posting this! Great explanatory text and graphics. A good educational resource for young players, new referees, and parents wanting to increase game knowledge. I hope viewers share this vid. Any other similar compilations you and others can create will help the game. Thanks again, your efforts are appreciated!
You can run as soon as the ball is kicked. The moment to judge the offside position is when the ball is kicked. That is why this rule makes footbal (soccer) so exciting. Assistant referees are very important, they need to stay focus on the offside all the time.
The offside offence is determined by the referees at the moment the ball is touched or played by one of his/her team (3 exceptions: corner kick, goal kick or throw-in)
Even with the different camera angles, with something that close you would have be directly in line before making that decision. The player who passes the ball forward is shielded by the opposing team from the camera angles leaving us to assume at which point the ball left his foot and is played to the teammate in question.
The song at 3' is Baiao Destemperado. The next one is Magalenha (Sergio Mendes - new version). Then the song of the previous World cup (Shakira), the last one is Morning in Rio by Sergio Mendes also.
Iniesta could be in off side position when Torres kicks the ball to the penalty arc, but he is not off side when he receives the ball. He is one meter behind the legs of the player that is in the ground.
At 3:08, there is an offside situation, after which you wrote that the player was not in offside position. But, when the ball was kicked, one part of his body (in this case, his head), was closer to the goal line than both the second last defender and the ball. Is this just a judgement debate, or is there a rule I don't know?
Yes I have checked the new rule and I believe this play is still an off-side if the ball is headed by one of his team. I would not call the off side if the attacker heads the ball, because he was not in off side then the ball was kicked near the half line. I don't think the new rule changes anything in this case.
at 10:46 it was offside because the ball touched the head of a teammate first. You are right, there is no offside from a corner kick, but once the ball touched the other player's head, the situation changes. If the ball had gone directly from the corner kick to the player that scored, then the goal would have been valid.
in 7:46 who touch the ball?? the defender?? have you check the New rules for the OFFSIDE?? I think by the new rules, that is not going to be offside. If the ball touch the defender and the ball rebounds to other player (from the other team) is not going to be offside. And i think players clearly in offside interfering with the goalkepper view and a goal is scored.. its gonna be considered offside either. I was reading just today, the changes FIFA made, so more goals can be scored by game.
If your teammate kicks the ball very far from say the mid field line , do you have to WAIT for the ball to go directly overhead of you and the defender, or can you start running toward the net AS SOON AS he kicks that ball ? I have gotten many different responses. Please clarify
ChubyDon Well... it is though. A player is in offside position if there are fewer than two defenders (including the goalie) between him and the goal line. According to what we can see here, his foot and head is in front of the second last defender = OFFSIDE.
+Sebastian Rekdal You're right Bro... it is OFFSIDE... great call by the AR... even if the Defender's trailing hand is on line with the forward, its still offside, coz the ball could not be played by the hand except for the GK in his 18-yard box...
+zan Not true, the entire body counts for the defending team. On the contrary, the whole body with the exception of the hand (and arm) counts for the attacker. So I reach out my elbow beyond the 2nd last defender at the moment the ball is played and not be offside.
I knew it ! I have been coaching for years at a local city in- house league and I have been telling the people who run this league (and don't listen ) , that it is not off sides once the player kicks that ball. They are in power and I have had many goals called back because they refuse to get up on the rules. I even told them to watch some soccer on tv and they could see for themselves what the refs are calling off-sides.They expect a player to look up and wait. Thank you for clarifing this.
My question is When a player is in an offside when his team's passed the ball and he didn't run. He waited for opponents to make him onside after the ball was passed. Can you pause your run on an offside to make it onside. How does it really work. Suarez once did it, the commentators said Suarez knew he was offside so he paused his run. I don't know which game it it though.
The idea of the offside rule is that the player doesn't gain an unfair advantage. Once the ball is touched by another player the offside situation is re-evaluated. Suarez and other experienced players recognize they are in offside, so they juts wait until the next time the ball is played. Unintentional deflections are not enough, the ball needs to be played intentionally.
9:14 - That's 100% offsides because the offensive player who wasn't the recipient of the pass was still actively in the play by interfering/drawing/distracting one if not more defenders as part of the offensive attack. If he was standing there and no defenders were affected by his being there, then it isn't offsides. At least one defender clearly marked him before the pass was made.
The player ran for the ball, that is participation or gaining advantage of the offside position. The AR signaled the offside infraction correctly. Great question !
2:41, he did interfere, He blocked the possibility of the defender getting to the ball. He did not have to make all those steps towards the ball. It is hard to say that this ball did not take a deflection from him.
+SafwanNet no, if the defender would move to the ball and the 14 no player would block the defender or kick the ball into net it would be offside, it is a clear goal, hope it helps :)
***** that attacker (#14) did move to the ball. As I said he did not have to make those extra moves. From the defenders position the defender would not see whetger #14 touched the ball or what because #14 was blocking the view bu running after the ball in an offside position.
no he didnt, he avoided to touch the ball, he was there when the ball was played, as i said if the defender moved to catch the ball then it would be a potential offside position
Sorry, about this part "And i think players clearly in offside interfering with the goalkepper view and a goal is scored"... i mean.. its NOT GONNA BE CONSIDERED OFFSIDE EITHER.
+T7 c no this is a good question :) as a referee, i can say that the defender thinks that 14 no player is gonna touch the ball, so he let the ball in, actually 14 no effects the defender somehow, BUT theoretically he did not give impact lets say, the white defender get up to kick the ball and 14 no player see that and kick the ball in it would be offside but its just a scenario i hope it helps :))
I think you mean 11:10. I don't think it is a foul, the goal keeper had no control of the ball and Tevez fairly gain possesion of the ball. The issue here is that after that he is in offside position when Messi passes the ball to him.
At 14:30 the player is in offside position when the attacker (his teammate) touches the ball. The offside position is not cancelled because the blue player touched the ball, a deflection doesn't count as a pass. If the blue player had tried to pass the ball or kick the ball, then there would be no offside.
9:52 is offside. The rule says "closer to the goal line than two opponents". When the ball is kicked from the corner there is no offside, but when the ball is headed to player 11 by a team mate, there is only one opponent between him and the goal line because the goal keeper moved. This is difficult play for an assistant referee because normally the goalkeeper is the last defender, not in this case.
If someone crosses it from a corner and I head it in and I was in an offside position goal But if someone crosses it and I pass it with my head to someone in a offside position HE IS OFFSIDE
+cody13aldauf, yes in this play this is the case, but I answered Jorge's question. There is no offside in the player receives the ball directly from a corner kick, throw-in, goal kick or from an opponent.
Messi is not in the offside zone at 11:11, because he is behind all defenders. The referee was correct! offside zone is between the last defender and 2nd last defender.
now I review the video once again, and realized Messi was the ball passer and Tevez was the one in front made a header score but still not offside. I should have said "Tevez(11)" is not in the offside zone when Messi passed the ball to him. He was behind all defenders. offside rule only applicable to player between the last defender and 2nd last defender.
You are right, Messi is not in offside, but Tevez is in offside position when he received the ball from Messi before scoring. At 11:10 the darker area is offside.
Great video! Helped solidify what we had been discussing: that you are not offsides AFTER the ball is kicked. Good point. The head, body, or either foot are fair game for offside. You can't drag your back foot (or skate) like in hockey to keep yourself onside.
Thanks for producing and posting this! Great explanatory text and graphics. A good educational resource for young players, new referees, and parents wanting to increase game knowledge. I hope viewers share this vid.

great video....been explaining this rule to my parents for 3 yrs :/ and this finally made it click :)
WoW! This video really really helped me! I feel awesome as a girl understanding offside thanks to you! haha
You are right at 3:08 the player is in off side when the ball is kicked, the one that I think is not off side is at 3:22.
The Brazilian Music is excellent. Could you tell me what songs are being played from about 3 minutes in until the end? Thanks for posting!
The song at 3' is Baiao Destemperado. The next one is Magalenha (Sergio Mendes - new version). Then the song of the previous World cup (Shakira), the last one is Morning in Rio by Sergio Mendes also.
ChubyDon Thanks for the info. I'll see if I can find them on Amazon.com.

just required a good quality vdo....other than 100% perfect for example!! thanks

8:57 was the 2010 Fifa world cup Finals!
If your teammate kicks the ball very far from say the mid field line , do you have to WAIT for the ball to go directly overhead of you and the defender, or can you start running toward the net AS SOON AS he kicks that ball ? I have gotten many different responses. Please clarify
For an offside is it when a player kicks or receives the ball?
This is a great video! Thanks for posting. I hope you get a ton of hits from this World Cup! Cheers.
great offside video
You are right 3:22 is not offside, however the CR called the offense following the AR indication. It was a very difficult call.
ChubyDon Well... it is though. A player is in offside position if there are fewer than two defenders (including the goalie) between him and the goal line. According to what we can see here, his foot and head is in front of the second last defender = OFFSIDE.

Sorry mate, it is offside, because his feet (more accurate: his knee) is closer to the goal than the second last defender. I.e. OFFSIDE.
in the WC final, isn't Iniesta in offside position..Not when Fabregas passed to him, before, when Torres tried to pass to Iniesta ?
When classical vocal music is playing, there is no offside. When there is mouth-popping noises, it's offside.
so the last one is offside only??
What is the classical song at the beginning?
That is the UEFA Championship League Theme Song
Thanks. I really enjoyed the video and I feel like I have a better understanding of offside now too.
I knew it ! It is sad to hear you have those bad calls, especially because the off side rule makes the game exciting!
My question is
When a player is in an offside when his team's passed the ball and he didn't run. He waited for opponents to make him onside after the ball was passed.
Can you pause your run on an offside to make it onside. How does it really work.

Unintentional deflections are not enough, the ball needs to be played intentionally.
Being AR is very difficult!
Yes it is! AR is 100% responsible for the offside law (11) which makes the game so exciting! Thanks for your comment.
9:14 - That's 100% offsides because the offensive player who wasn't the

I see your point. And also, from the AR angle it is very difficult to see how far is one player from the other. Thanks
No, he is not interfering with play. This is not offside
Mark Buikema He distracted 2 defender's, yes he was due to the act of distraction and NOT ball reception anyhow.
I know at 3:03 it says a clear offsides, but I'm having a question. He didn't interfere with the play so why is her offsides?? Please help, thanks
The player ran for the ball, that is participation or gaining advantage of the offside position. The AR signaled the offside infraction correctly. Great question !
One that Hernandez offside call by AR will be correct...
From the defenders position the defender would not see whetger #14 touched the ball or what because #14 was blocking the view bu running after the ball in an offside position.
no he didnt, he avoided to touch the ball, he was there when the ball was played, as i said if the defender moved to catch the ball then it would be a potential offside position
hat attacker (#14) did move TOWARDS the ball.
But in no way did he interfere
In the 10:12 minute was not offside because the last defender was much more behind than the player
+Martin Figueroa You're wrong. Learn the rule. It's the 2nd last defender.
Sorry, about this part "And i think players clearly in offside interfering with the goalkepper view and a goal is scored"... i mean.. its NOT GONNA BE CONSIDERED OFFSIDE EITHER.
Can someone tell me the name of the song in the first two minutes?
It is UEFA Champions League song
Thank u so much!
about 2:09 attaker14 give impact to white defence? So is this offside? I am beginner referee, so this question may be idiot, sorry.
+T7 c no this is a good question :) as a referee, i can say that the defender thinks that 14 no player is gonna touch the ball, so he let the ball in, actually 14 no effects the defender somehow, BUT theoretically he did not give impact

11.11 Clear offside... ehh.. he is behind the last defender..
Last no offside
At 14:55 when the ball is passed the orange attacker is in offside position. Only the goal keeper is between him and the goal line.
3:22 Is not offside, as the hands does not count in football/soccer
what are you talking about? its his foot that is in an offside position
I noticed u put MEXICO alot why don't u put all the bad calls that been robbed by mexico for example PANAMA COSTA RICA or vs USA
+PERIKAZO_RUIZ Ruiz, the intention is to train, not to show bad calls.
3:28 was clear offside? his head is in front of the second last defender
***** Only the feet is taken into consideration
***** Only the feet is taken into consideration
diamondcutterandf598 Any playable part of the attackers body; Head, knee, foot...
diamondcutterandf598 nope. The head is taken into account as well as the feet. Only the arms are not taken into account
Nacho Marquez Technically speaking yes even the arms, it's just that nobody enforces it because it would be absurd.
Isn't 10:11 a foul against Tevez? Because the goalie had the ball in his two hands and Tevez scrapped the ball off.
I think you mean 11:10. I don't think it is a foul, the goal keeper had no control of the ball and Tevez fairly gain possesion of the ball. The issue here is that after that he is in offside position when Messi passes the ball to him.
8:40, yes or no???
Iniesta is not in offside when he receive the ball to score
Because blue was touched ball
At 14:30 the player is in offside position when the attacker (his teammate) touches the ball. The offside position is not cancelled because the blue player touched the ball, a deflection doesn't count as a pass. If the blue player had tried to pass the ball or kick the ball, then there would be no offside.
9:52 is not offside ... come on ?
9:52 is offside. The rule says "closer to the goal line than two opponents". You cant be offside from a corner
If someone crosses it from a corner and I head it in and I was in an offside position goal
But if someone crosses it and I pass it with my head to someone in a offside position HE IS OFFSIDE
Jose Mourinho but there was a defender in the post
10:40 you can't be offside from a corner kick can you?
You are right. No offside rule applies if the player receives the ball from a corner kick, throw in or goal kick.
+Jorge García That wasn't directly from the corner kick as his teammate headed the ball to him. It's a new phase of play.
+cody13aldauf, yes in this play this is the case, but I answered Jorge's question. There is no offside in the player receives the ball directly from a corner kick, throw-in, goal kick or from an opponent.
+ChubyDon okay, just wanted to be to clear about what "from a corner means"
"from an opponent" only counts if the opponent deliberately plays the ball, not by accident
3:22, the player wasn't offside!
You are correct! Thanks.
Yes he was because he pass the ball to his teammate who is ahead the last defender
INIESTAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
not offside
Messi is not in the offside zone at 11:11, because he is behind all defenders. The referee was correct! offside zone is between the last defender and 2nd last defender.
You are right, but Tevez (11) is in offside and he is the one that scored.

How is that the offside zone if the defenders are in front of Tevez?
That is BS, he is still closer to the goal line than the seconds last defender. Offside!
at around 11:00 where it says the next play is hard to believe... No its not its messi, fifa love messi
Annoying music. Couldn't finish watching.
This is why soccer is just as dumb as American football lol.
Why?
