The non-success of (at least) international rugby players going for nfl positions is possibly down to being a "superstar rugby man" on the backend of rugby career to a "nobody with potential" vying for attention against younger athletes. Mailata was different, he was never a rugby star, never had a rugby career. He had nothing to lose and everything to gain by putting in some hard work.

I was lucky enough to meet Michael Lewis and Mike McKenzie after a golf tournament in MS. Mr. Lewis is probably one of the funniest men I've ever met. Super nice guy. Same with Mike McKenzie. Everyone else in my store was too intimidated to talk to them and I just shot the shit with both of them for the half hour they were there. The legend about Michael Lewis is that the coaching staff was trying to get Haslett to leave his office to watch Lewis do some timed 40s. They didn't have any cleats in his size, so he was doing them barefoot on the Saints' practice field. He supposedly ran a 4.28 while Haslett watched from his office and Haslett brought him up and offered him a roster spot immediately.
