I think that wax lathe and caulk mold making technique is the single most useful technique I've seen on any prop channel in a while. Thanks! I'm gonna have to try that.
That's so good to hear! I used to make jewellery and used the wax lathing technique all the time. It's such a satisfying activity, almost mesmerizing....
There are lots of other silicone mold making vids around but the two other most important points are to use 100% silicone caulk (one with additives may or may not work out) and do it outside or with good ventilation, because it off-gasses eye-wateringly strong vinegar fumes.
I genuinely could wait forever if I had to for another one of your vids. They never miss and its always a joy to see you again! This wand looks incredible, dude! Definitely trying some of these techniques for my future ghostbuster builds 🤩
I'm building Protonpacks for cosplayers, fans and myself for a while now and i must say: the way you created the Clippard and the top knob is just genius..!
Thank you for appreciating those bits:) I really struggled to find a reasonably good way to make the knob, that wasn't too expensive or out of reach for most.
You did it! You son of a gun did it! Honestly I didn’t think you might have been able to pull the wand off after seeing your pack build. You’re technique is genius especially the hand grips and the patterned knob.
fantastic video. I can't wait to see part2. most of the names of the parts of both the wand and proton pack were given by the fans. that particle thrower looks magnificent.
Been waiting for this tutorial..love it dude. Always finding incredible ways to make all these parts. I'm always thinking there's no way he's going to not buy that piece, then you bang it out from home. It's such a peculiar prop with odd shops yet you still hit the accuracy for a scratch build.
You are sure right about it being a peculiar prop with odd shapes. When I first started I thought it would be an easy build, but it's definitely got some tricky bits:)
A Ghost Trap and/or A P.K.E. Meteor would be awesome for the next Ghostbusters build. I would love to know how you come up with the design for the build, a lot of research must be involved with each design.
Hmmm, I think I'm gonna so something not Ghostbusters next, but maybe sometime down the road if I get enough requests. And yep, I do quite a bit of research, and it involves a lot of trial and error as well:)
I bought your templates/instructions for my brother's Halloween build. Very impressed! Outstanding detail but easy to follow. Now if we can just get better at cutting the foam straight... :D
YES!! The project is complete! Now if anyone ever asks you if you're a god, you can say (with confidence), "YES!!" ❤❤❤ Srsly tho, thank you for the entire proton pack project!
Yeah, I have used contact cement in the past, but I have trouble recommending to people when I know there is a good chance they won't use proper respiratory protection. My son was diagnosed with leukaemia when he was 6 and I don't want anyone else to have to go through that nightmare. So even though it takes a bit longer, I'd rather use something less toxic. Once I got used to it, I actually quite liked using hot glue, it does have some advantages contact cement doesn't.
Question: How does hot glue & foam hold up in warmer climates? I'm in Southern Louisiana and some of our charity events are outdoors all day and I was just wondering how much softening/loosening hot glue does in the heat or in direct sunlight? Is there another way to hold foam together that you'd recommend?
Hi there, Yes, hot glue can get soft if it's in the direct sun, especially if it is black. You can see me testing hot glue in a hot car here: ua-cam.com/video/iayq7iFnlgQ/v-deo.html For an alternative glue, contact cement is going to be the best, just make sure you have adequate lung protection, and best to do it outside. Super glue also holds really well on foam, it's good for smaller parts.
I just checked and it seems to be working. There are 3 separate PDF's to download. After you go through the checkout and get your email, click the "view content" link, and you should see "proton pack final", "Alice pack frame" and "Neutrona Wand complete" Click the download button next to the Neutrona Wand and you should be good to go.
Love the foam vids!!! Have you considered building a housing from 1/4 luan or hobby Store wood to create a sturdy base in housing to make either twist handle or green side trigger and add rumble motor?
Great video! My proton pack and Neutrona Wand will be outside for a Halloween display. I am going to use contact cement to glue it together instead of hot glue. I wish I could use hot glue. Any thoughts on how I could get the welded look without using hot glue?
I think you could use caulking- make sure it's paintable, and then just squeeze it out like you'd do with hot glue. Just means you have to give it time to dry before you can move on.
It's just a personal choice, I know that contact cement has a lot more toxic fumes, and I have a hard time recommending that to people, knowing they probably won't use it with proper respiratory protection. Our son went through cancer when he was 6, and I just don't want in any way to contribute to that happening to someone else.
I really want to do this for halloween!! About how much did it cost to make the wand and pack? Im thinking of only making the pack but im kinda broke 😭 i cant seem to find any good floor mats either and though i was thinking of making it out of wood, i dont have any machinery. Where did you get your floor mat?
I got my floor mat at Canadian Tire, but unless you're in Canada that's not going to be super helpful. If you have no money or tools, I'd recommend making it out of cardboard. I have seen a couple cardboard packs made from my pattern and they actually turned out pretty good. Just don't take it out in the rain:)
@@LostWax I've started making mine with foam that I got from michaels!! The tutorial has been really helpful and straightforward and I've been able to paint it already! I'm getting really close to the decorating stage and its only the second day! Thanks so much for the tutorial!!!

Hmm, I'm not sure about that, whether they're just sold out because of Halloween, or if it's something else. Another place to try is TNT cosplay supply if you're in the U.S.
@@johnhynesproductionslimite7522 Hey fellow Canadian!! You could probably get away with just regular craft foam. Michaels generally has it in large rolls of black and white, and it's pretty cheap. As for the higher density stuff like WTF, I don't actually know where to get it in Canada. BTW, Michaels also has rolls of thicker foam as well that's pretty decent.
@@LostWax I understand buddy :) Anyway, I bit the bullet and I bought the spirit pack, I'll modify the lights and I'll link the spengler's wand to it. It will be a less daunting project than building it from scratch. Still I watch you vids coz they are that damn good :)

Thanks Odin! Yes, those are both old tricks from back when I used to make jewellery, super handy.
I guess we are gonna see a candle lathe soon in a month
