    Dude! The way you thread the needle is genius! I'm always struggling with frayed edges that I end up trimming. Good tip about the ice pick too, my thumbs get pretty sore forcing the needle through unpunched fabric but that's how my mom always did it. Cool video

    you can also use the smallest crochet needle and put the fringe on it and pull thru

    Okndnbabe: yes each to his or her own. There are plenty of folks that prefer a crochet hook and there are plenty that use needles. As for men working on shawls, its an expectation in my family. The ladies that taught me taught me so they could get more made in time for give away. All hands on deck. Thanks for your comments!

    Thanks for the kind words! This was more of an experiment than anything else but it seems that it may be helping folks out. To answer Holycows question, I prefer and used precut or chainette fringe in the video (2.5 to 3 yards for one standard shawl). You can usually find this in 14 inch length for single ties and 18 inch if you want to get fancy and double tie your fringe. I know other folks also buy spooled fringe and cut the fringe to their desired length. Thanks for the suggestions!

    Thank you Sharon for taking the time to check out my video. Humbled that you used it in such a positive way. Thanks for the kind words and the suggestions. I will see what I do in the future to improve the quality of the videos. Just working with the best I have but then again, I never thought more than 10 people would check any of this out. You have inspired me to try and share some more... I had no idea that someone like you and your granddaughter would come along. Thank you very much!

    I love that I found this. You do an excellent job of teaching this. I do have a question though. Is there a reason that you say use gaberdine? Is it a traditional cloth? Is there other cloths that can be used? I have one, but want to make more. Thanks Patience

    • @ShoopyMcMeerah
      @ShoopyMcMeerah  9 років тому +1

      Patience Pontious Thanks for the kind words! As for gaberdine I think it is used as much as it is because its a durable yet light fabric that resists wrinkling. Most shawls I have seen use gaberdine but in all honesty you can use just about anything. I have seen heavy cottons as well as lighter satins with amazing appliques on them. Id say anything that holds its form, isn't too stretchy and can hold the fringe is ok in my girls books. Good luck!

      You could call McKee's Indian Store in Anadarko, or Sharp's Indian Store in Ponca City. Both ship. You can order online from Crazy Crow. Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

    My 10 year old granddaughter and I watched this together and we are going to make her a scarf with fringe, to take home, that SHE MADE. Self esteem, you know. Good for kids, keeps them away from the electronics for an hour or so. You are an inspiration, but you will need to work on the lighting a bit. You have a great clear diction voice and are a good teacher.

      @@denasewell I guess I missed this question! Sorry for the late reply. I have always heard it called chainette fringe and you can find it in a lot of places. Just Google the term and see what comes up. You can buy it on the spool and cut your own lengths or buy it pre cut. I use 14 inch fringe usually. If I'm double tying maybe 18 inch off the top of my head?

    Hey I was wondering after looking at a shawl I was given, how go ya keep the fringe from sliding out and loosing up the knot?

    • @ShoopyMcMeerah
      @ShoopyMcMeerah  4 роки тому

      I have never had that issue with these overhand knots. Maybe it would be a problem if it was a larks head knot or something but I was taught to use overhand knots because they held and they are fast.

    Thanks for this video! My girls want a shawl for the next PowWow. Not sure how to measure them for a shawl but now I know how to add the fringe!! :) They are 8 any suggestions on how to measure them? Again thanks for the video. :)

    • @ShoopyMcMeerah
      @ShoopyMcMeerah  10 років тому +2

      Thanks for the kind words! As for measuring kids for a shawl, you can have them stand with their arms out ( T ). Measure fingertip to fingertip and add about 6 inches to give them some room for growth and have something to wrap over their hands when wearing it. For the other dimension, the shawl should go from the shoulders to about mid thigh (before fringing). Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions and good luck!

    • @thecounsiltwins
      @thecounsiltwins 10 років тому

      ShoopyMcMeerah thanks!! I do have a question.. the fringe goes on all four sides so that means if we want it around 30" from shoulders to mid thigh and around 53" from finger tip to finger tip PLUS 6" so 59" total the fabric is to be 60" x 59".. correct? so when folded over and worn it measures about 30" x 59".. oh boy I hope that makes sense.. not sure because I've got two hungry girls begging for food.. LOL

      @mikewright253 10 років тому

      Carol Counsil
      I think I understand what you are saying and yes, that is right. Some people make kids shawls so they are not doubled over since they will likely outgrow them. It's a lot less work since you only fringe three sides and you only need half the material. Having said that, I prefer to go the full monte myself. It's really up to you. I sure hope that helps!

    where can I get long fringe like that?

    • @pamelabennett1492
      @pamelabennett1492 8 років тому +1

      you measure the fringe from the spool around a stiff cardboard 12 or more inches wide , wrap the fringe thread or narrow ribbon around and around, then cut ALL of them at one end of the cardboard .
      then just pull them off, 2 at a time, even them up and grab the middle of them with crochet hook, pull em thru hole, make a knot!
      yes, lots of work!
      2 strands of chainette fringe look WAY better than just one , just saying!

    • @pamelabennett1492
      @pamelabennett1492 8 років тому
