Nintendo Switch: Hard Power Switch Mod

  • The Nintendo Switch goes flat when it's completely powered off. Nintendo recommending to periodically recharge the battery if the Switch Console it put in storage or the battery can die. Reports of Switch Consoles frying when alternate chargers are plugged in. Then my charger blows up and smoke comes out.
    It's time to fix Nintendo's mistakes. I'm installing a hard power switch in my Nintendo Switch. So I can switch the battery off and power off the Switch properly whenever I choose to. That's the power of a hard switch.

      I know right, and it's wasting charge cycles as well. Should I just remove the battery when I am not using it? How long do I need to keep charging it when it's removed (where I need to plug it back in to charge it again).

      The Wii U has its antennas (uses the same protocol as WiFi), always active in order to turn on automatically when the Wii U console is powered, I dislike this design though causing it to be power hungry.

    I'm not an expert, but I recently heard that to make batteries charge faster they split and tape them together. Each cell needs its own charging circuit, so if tying those two together combined cells then you could end up with a fire eventually. Maybe not soon. Please please investigate this.

    • @JanusCycle
      @JanusCycle  2 роки тому +7

      Thank you, safety is very important. I did check the continuity and both red wires are connected together for redundancy at each end, see 3:15.
      I also saw MKBHD's video recently on fast charging and two batteries side by side is indeed what some devices have these days.
      The Switch is however a single cell and can be be disconnected by switching off the two red wires together.
      Your message is still important. Anyone doing this sort of work needs to learn about battery safety first, before attempting anything like this.

    Neat mod and great video as always! I wish more electronics came with a hard-off switch to preserve battery life. I don’t have a Nintendo Switch but I would be very curious to see what the the quiescent current draw is. Standby draw should, in theory, be in the nanoamps if a soft-off solution is implemented. I would guess the Switch is drawing at least a couple of milliamps to deplete the battery so fast in an “off” state. Also love the wordiness about putting a switch inside the Switch at the beginning. Gave me a chuckle!

    • @JanusCycle
      @JanusCycle  2 роки тому +8

      I could have measured the current draw while I had it open and off. But I just wanted to get this done. Going flat in a couple of days when off, then needing hours to trickle up and full charge again was getting ridiculous. I've since thought it could be something like always charging the controller batteries. Whatever it is, I'm in charge now :)

    I was considering, is that switch rated for the peak power consumption of the switch? If Nintendo decided to use two wires instead of one, i'm almost sure it was to be able to use two not so thick wires instead of a thick one

    I have a nintendo switch lite and i also like to play on it from time to time, it's more casual play like you do, but this switch also goes flat after a couple of days which is quite annoying and is putting unnecessary cycles onto the battery. Now that i saw your video, i am thinking of doing the same to my switch, just solder in a switch to really turn off the nintendo switch so that the battery doesn't go flat after 2 days! I also own a PS Vita, this has the same, casual usecase scenario, i love the Vita, but i don't play on it that often, but this device, not even turned off, keeps months of battery, which doesn't drain the battery! Granted i hacked in a 3000mAh samsung smartphone battery inside my Vita, and oh boy this thing has HOURS of screen on time, way longer than the factory estimation. I don't understand why the nintendo switch drains the battery this fast while doing absolutely nothing!

    One thing to note is the switch contacts are thin, the default system has thick two wires to supply large current, this switch will limit that as inside contact will be very thin and offer resistance hence will drain battery if in use , should have checked for contact resistance before soldering, i known this cuz i done similar mistake with phone , it was not able to boot cuz of very thin wires they i doubled the wire contacts to make it work and another phone just used thick wire, why i did cuz charging port got damaged and replacement parts are shit here often from chep low quality instead of std connectors.
