- A short video of Michael Sweet explaining how to get the Stryper tone for recording with an Orange amplifier and a Tech 21 parametric DI stomp box. Also featuring short clips of the new song "Blackened" as it is being recorded.
Thanks to Michael Sweet and Oz Fox for taking the time out in explaining their gear. You guys are the best. Keep rockin' for Christ!! And your fans!!!
Love that old school carvin and the use of a Orange and a tech 21!!!! Very cool tone
The Stryper tone is legend !! Any Hard Rock guitar player wants that sound. The first song I ever heard was "From Wrong to Right" on the Wally George show (for any SoCal folks who remember). Been listening to them ever since and their playing never gets stale.
Orange is an amazing amp I have a 20 and it sounds super....Stryper is 100x more amazing....best Christian band ever...I love u guys...you got me through 6th grade and I stayed a Christian because I thought being a Christian was cool and still do when other people made fun..
awesome to see a reall star being so down to earth and showing the equipment...This is so cool!
Great video Michael - thanks alot. I have the Tech 21 for acoustic but will now try it out with my electric setup.
THANK YOU for this video! "In God We Trust" was one of the first real rock albums I ever got and I was mesmerized by the tone as a teenager (as well as the lyrics and songwriting :). I still am, and never knew how you got "that sound" until this.
So glad to see you guys still plugging away - you haven't lost it (in fact "it"s even better!)
I have 2 eminence 12" and 2 pile 12" in my 4X12 cabinet and I love it. Had it that way since the 80s.
Great video. I absolutely love this pedal in front of my Soldano SLO on the crunch channel. I also really dig the videos you have posted of your signature Theta Pro.
Incredibly cool video that I just came across. I wish you could still get that Orange head.....or something like a Marshall Major. An amp with those huge PT's does something to a distorted tone that is absolutely magical. These guys are the absolute best. Just the coolest cats on the planet.
Really cool video! Always wondered how Stryper got their KILLER tone! Totally badass!!!
Great sound. I have always loved that Stryper sounded unique.
the short explanation for this is this: he uses the Tech 21 ParaDriver as a notch filter to boost a single frequency to alter the overall tone. The trademark "Stryper sound" is upper mid boosted which can sound too thin to most people but it's made a unique guitar sound for them. Funny he mentions Schenker as Michael uses the wah to notch filter his sound a lot but the notch isn't as high as how Michael is using it here.
+Kevin Richards Rock the Stage NYC
He points that out in the video. He calls his technique "Michael Schenker on Steroids."
Blu
Schenker though has a more rounder tone - more mid-range-ish. Sweet's sound is all treble. OK for solos, but his rhythm sound is far too bitey and thin. Schenker's sound is perfect for both rhythm and soloing.
When he plays by himself, it's kinda thin, but with a fat bass guitar in the mix, it's perfect in my ears. I possibly even find the opposite of you. I like it for rhythm, but think it's a little thin for single string notes :)
Knut Einar Evenmo
I liked their Line 6 sound better than this Orange sound. But then again, Michael will take any musical product that the company will give to him for free.
Not only is M Sweet an accomplished vocalist and a great guitar player-he seems also to be a Gearhead. Nice! And what great sound it is with "The Thing" on,
wow! thanks guys! taking the time to do this shows how much you care about the fans and are open to giving out your sound!
Michael, thanks so much for posting this, this is very interesting,it it's great you guys care about your fans like this, looking forward to seeing you guys again soon in Boston-God Bless you!
Fast forward to 2023. I heard Stryper in concert earlier in the year, and Michael was playing through Marshall amp heads. I was utterly DESTROYED to learn that Michael was playing through a processor, and not using the natural distortion of the JCM2000. 🤣🤣🤣
I want one Michael. Order one for me. Along with your signature flying V 🤣🤣🤣
The Clarences love & support Stryper!
awesome demo & inside look at their tone... Rock on Stryper. BR & God bless
I have been happily stuck on the Randy Rhoads tone for decades... And not what you hear on the studio takes,, but the live ones... The really deep low end chugs with the perfect mix of mids and highs to give off that really big angry tone that want to rip your face off... Its kind of been my signature since I started playing 37 years ago.... People today ask me about my tone,,, and they think its something I came up with.. I just tell them,, listen to the tribute album very closely.. Now with modern technology, Ive had to tweak it here and there but its still the same result im looking for..
awesome! its cool to see something about Stryper's tone, especially since theyre telling us about it
Nice !!
I have always really liked stryper sound - it makes me think michael schenker taken to the next level - it seems to be the wah/mid freq
and just as i wrote this he says “ michael schenker on steroids” wow - synchroncity
Sounds like the mid range is through the roof but, with balls it seems more intense. Then again that could be GOD coming from your true honest sound. It's good that you guys have your own gtr sound as it differentiates you from 1 another making the unique STRYPER sound.
MAN....that new song sounds AMAZING!!!!!!!
Very cool. Thanks for sharing your methods. Stryper was before my time but you have 1 more fan now. Been looking for a classic 80s lead guitar tone and Stryper has the prime example.
Hah! I like the Alf Profile Pic. I find myself watching Those Reruns today on MeTv. Hah! Hah! Hah!
gives it more definition!
I love mike’s playing style as well
I love that Stryper paint job on a carvin. Carvin guitars are awesome.
Thanks ! Can't wait, sounds great !!
The riff at 09:38 reminds me of Divider. I can't afford a Tech 21 but I have another Parametric EQ arriving today and my fingers are crossed I can get close to this tone.
Thanks for the insight. God Bless
esses caras mandam muito bem mesmo.....
minha banda preferida!!!!!!!!God Bless*-*
Love you Michael (and Oz). Keep producin' fruit for the kingdom of God. Motivational and educational. I am such a guitar amateur this kind of info is really helpful. Praying for your protection. Your making a dent and I'm sure satan ain't happy. Waaah. That's ok, God has his hedge about you and His Holy Spirit in you. Don't let up, keep your foot on the accelerator!
@plankboi - Redding Ca. my old home town! hope its all going good there! I was the stage manager at the civic auditorium for Danial Band. Great show, Great Guys! Later Redding :)
Nice tour!! I love hearing about "gear." Thanks for that!
Maybe you guys can talk Orange into making the amps YELLOW and BLACK? LOL!! Just kidding!
GREAT video!!
NEW ALBUM? HOT DIGGITY! CAN NOT WAIT!
I think the issue here is that I don't have the Michael sweet extra ordinary voice and the skills of his hands.. he is the legend that went Christin and got ignored.. sadly
Great sounds sounds like a chainsaw kind of like Metallica’s Kill ‘Em All album and Motley crews first album
Hey guys.....wanna say I grew up with your music and it greatly inspired me and drove me into music.....playing.....thanks so much...what do you think of the Mesa Triple Rec in comparison to this? I love the Mesa TR
@rongorsuch I borrowed a friend's pod hd500 and came immediately to this to clone it. Use a JCM800, graphic eq and parametric eq to get the tone really close, then add a fixed wah. Dial it in and you're basically there. It won't sound right without the fixed wah. It adds that nasaly sizzle. I tweaked on it about 30 minutes and am 80% to getting the sound really close.
Aw, sweet Mark V! Wish I could afford it in a combo.
It's from a new song on the upcoming re-record album. The name of the song is "Blackened"
Muito bom o video e os equipamentos nem se fala, hehehe.Valeu Stryper
I've always liked the Stryper Tone. I may get one of those Tech 21s. Too bad I just finished recording a ton of stuff. It would have been cool to have that tone.
this cool like to see more like this
mike sweet is just so cool ....
How does Oz replicate the sound on his POD? Seems like it's crucial to drive the front end of a tube amp, how do you do it with the Line 6?
The best "pedal" was the orange lifting sound. That was Amazing and hilarious at the same time.
Rock on forever...
i have a Dime cab with chinese Eminece ...picked it up used at GC for $199...sounds awsome!
It is a custom Carvin....Funny thing, it was supposed to have a locking nut on the neck (due to the Floyd Rose) and they forgot to put it on, true story!! Michael told me that!
Excelent, yeeees :)
At which o clock didn't have the bass set at on the overdrive channel?
Wow, 15db's of 500Khz. I had no idea. I was boosting at 750Khz as Stryper did back in the day, but I was not boosting a full 15db's. I was also boosting about 125Hz about half of the 750Khz value, which was probably taking away from it. Sooo cool. I definitely agree with not using a parked wah. Way too thin.
Yellow and black attack sound! Love the old school! Bye bye Line6 heads and cabs... :-) Orange endorsement deal coming at ya!
Nice Carvin Ultra V
@p0w3r96 It is a Carvin. Must be a special make for Michael because I cannot find it on the Carvin website.
I listened to its tone but i think i still like the mesa triple rectifier head better running through a mesa cab.....but i am sure you guys get props from Orange! hehe why not....it does sound pretty good.....Im just a mesa lover...only the triple rec though
Michael and Oz's guitar tone, skill and delivery is unique in rock imho. My favorite guitar duo in rock. Amazing sound every time.
cool so there working on second coming on this video
I did the same back in the 80's to copy the end of loud and clear😂 I was about 8 years old
Hilarious! But please tell us how your big brother kickd the sheet outta ya for having to replace his tubes!!! HAHALOL
so you guys ad more mids than highs? I uselly take the mids out.
Wouldn't an EQ pedal with one of the sliders turned down eliminate all the hum whatsoever from the amplifier?
Honestly, Michael and Oz makes amps sound good. ANY amp.
also! ha! you guys just proved to me that mid sweeping isn't all what its cracked up to be! a good mid punch adds allot! cool! hehehe!!
What type of pickups in the guitar???
Sooooo thaaaat's how they've made the end of Loud 'n Clear!
Gustavo Santos in the early days they used Mesa Boogie
Whats the name of the opening song ? !
What pickups do Michael and Oz use? Are they different from what they used in the 80s?
+Beery Dunno what Oz uses, but Michael uses Duncan Blackouts, with the neck in the bridge and the bridge in the neck.
Wait, why would he swap out like that? Also, thanks for the info.
+Beery
Something about prefering the fatness of the alnico neck pickup in the bridge and the cutting high end of the ceramic bridge pickup in the neck, I think.
Blu
Oh, yeah, that does make sense. That's why I like a Distortion neck and a JB bridge. Cool.
@retrogamerSam
Since Carvin does whatever you want, I'm sure if you ask nicely (and pay) they would do one for you.
Hello Michael how come I can't find that Thunder verb 200watt for sale any were is it a new amp that's not on the market yet.
It's on the list of 'discontinued gear' over at Orangeamps.com since several years ago... I guess 200W tube heads weren't good sellers for them anymore so they decided to stick to 100W amps max. Back then, even Michael Sweet had to call them and ask for a loan!!! You may like the Rockerverb 100 MKIII or Dual Dark 100 instead... Oh, and you can always use the 'still available' Thunderverb 200 cover on your present head! LOL www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TH50Hcvr--orange-cvr-lghead-large-head-cover
Didn't Orange just make the AD 200 to replace the older Orange amp heads?
Finally , viewed this Juno 2020...
Juno ?
Aisle Ask E.R . ... She said Gnome ...
Huh?
Pardon moi ... and. My Parctwah ...
SParchTwah !!!!
Now Mike's using the MS Theta Pro DSP pedal board.
Which is like 6 times more expensive for achieving the same Stryper tone...
@retrogamerSam
The guitar is a Carvin Ultra V.
Check out their website. CarvinGuitars dotcom
this drive box its sold for bass players ,check out on ebay
POD? Which one?
Anybody have any idea how the eq is set on the Orange head?
And M.S. sings too.
The guitar sound is a bit too bright, but sounds great when double tracked.
samsamp is a great pedal.... and orange amps
(I'm using an XT Live)
No more ISP's???
no offense but i think the Orange sounds better without the tech 21 on as opposed to with the tech 21.....with the tech it sound like a band saw tin canny.....but heck you guys could play a bandsaw and make it rock...lol
Thats why this album to me sounded a bit punk-ish. It has the dirt & grit from those gears.
For those who can't afford the Tech21, the Behringer V-TONE ACOUSTIC DRIVER DI ADI21 looks to be almost the exact same, but much cheaper.
Blessings!
except it's for the ACOUSTIC guitar
The one Michael used in the video is also made for the acoustic guitar. That doesn’t mean its applications are limited only to the acoustic.
And yes, Behringer obviously won’t have the same quality, but for $100 less that should be the expectation ;)
A jcm800 marshall pair with the Jacksons to me where the best but who am I
Try a Fly Rig 5. Boom, tone in a box.
F the orange... I LOVE the sweets..
Cool but I will always stick to my JSX .Way more crunch
What no Rockman gear :)
i wish they start making tube amps once again i hate the new amps and stryper pleas get on the music site call,d reverbnation cool site for bands and labels and find me xride there
What can I get today in 2024 to get this 500k ?
These bands will say whatever for whoever's giving them free shit . It's funny now there tone is because of the theta pro.
His fingers move almost robotically like thier programmed on every string and fret lol he’s one of my mentors..when it comes to electric guitar
I cant boost any more than +6 to +8db without it sound like a full blown wah sound.
I like it better without! but thats what makes you- you.
Except he failed to mention there's a hell
This box is Not for the bass!!look This one is a Tech 21 PARADRIVER. The Bass model says BASS.
