They use dogs for all kinds of experiments. My husband used to work at the University of Utah Medical Center. He brought this guy over to our house once and my dog immediately had a bad reaction to him. Growling and barking,I had never seen her act that way with anyone. Turns out the guy worked in the lab where they did these experiments. 😢
As someone who has dispatched animals for slaughter and to prevent suffering, I personally found no enjoyment in it. As a livestock grazier the animals well being is my responsibility. God gave us dominion over the animals to care for them and use them for sustenance. With that gift comes the responsibility of care.

We are the first farm off the highway. I can't tell you how many momma cats and litters of kittens have been dumped the past 18 years. The dogs keep moving on, trying to find their way back home. People suck. 🤬
Too many cats will cause troubles because they will continue to overpopulate, fight each other, kill any small animals they can catch, they do carry diseases! Domesticated cats are not natural animals any more than dogs are!

A bird dog does not kill the bird. It waits for the signal to flush after it alerts on the birds. After it flushes the birds up it waits for the Hunter to shoot them. Then the dog fetches or retrieves the birds without putting any markings on the birds. A real nice dog named Luke taught me that. A very gentle, kind and squirrelly dog.

My dad killed ours because it was eating chickens, found it red handed , threw it out the chicken coupe , and it hyper extended its hind legs.. So it was "put down" . People living off that live stock and depending on it , are not gonna waste their time trying to post the dog on FB ( which fb doesn't allow , and there wasn't internet at the time anyway ) . If i'm not mistaken , the dog was also biting children.

Animals aren’t people. And I say that as someone who sometimes feels bad about even killing spiders and bees. I spend as much time as I can outside in nature and I sit in awe listening to the birds every day. I love animals. But there comes a point where you have to put things into perspective and remember that animals are just animals. Mother nature is a cruel place full of violence and death. Many animals will eat YOU in a heartbeat if given the chance. For some reason people willingly blot that fact out.

Well, I have and love my dogs. I will tell you that I have had a neighbor not contain their dogs. They got into our pasture and killed several market lambs that I have raised for 4-H . We had a conversation with them, and they paid me full market value for the loss. The 2nd time, they opted not to pay for the loss. The 3rd time in the same month, we applied the 3-S policy. Shoot shovel & shut up. No one came looking for the dogs, and my remaining lambs survived. By the way, at any given time, we have 2 to 7 dogs. They kill nothing. My cats, on the other hand, are killing machines.
This is the first time I've heard this story about/from Noem. From the sounds of it her story has already been through the horse and is now a steaming pile of political trouble for her of her own making. I'm, I guess what you'd call a farmer sort of - I'm building a self-sufficient homestead with a myriad of critters including dogs and chickens. My dogs would kill my chickens in a heart beat if I let them but that doesn't mean I care about the dogs any less. They are friends of mine and while I have great affection for them and I've trained them as well as I know how that doesn't mean I don't understand who and what they are. I'm certainly not going to shoot them for it. If they get into my chickens it is my fault, not theirs.

In what universe would any sane, intelligent person think that killing an animal (let alone a dog) would let you score political points? This conversation shows the growing devide between urban/suburban and rural America and our ideological differences. Regardless the person in question. People love their animals, but when animals have behavioral, health or at end of life veterinarians are not always accessible to rural Americans. Even moreso today with a national shortage of veterinarians and rising healthcare costs, and rescues are not always what's best for an animal (the road to hell is paved with good intentions). Historically, when animals had issues we had to deal with the situation. I'm surprised the woke crowd hasn't had 'old Yeller' banned and erased from the Disney catalog. The conversation reflects the incremental brainwashing sweeping our nation and how much we've forgotten/ignore where we've come from and the old ways of getting things done. At the end of the day life is messy and not always pretty. Society has elevated pets/animals to a level where they are surrogate's for relationships missing with other humans.

That's the only context where this makes sense, and it backfired because she is so out of touch that she doesn't realize what you realize-the vast majority of our society lives in suburbia and cities and won't relate. I have grown up with hunting dogs and house dogs. They are tools to some and family members to others. I’d rather have someone that governs right than allows their emotions to drive their decisions when push comes to shove. The entire issue makes me think that the country has been pussified to point beyond repair.

This segment actually makes Noem more credible than either of you gentlemen. Those of us raised in farm country know that untrainable dogs get a bullet to the brain and an unmarked grave in the woods. Noem's mistake was to talk about it. There are a lot of harsh, unpleasant realities on a farm or ranch. Talking about it never makes it better. It's an unspoken country expectation that if your dog kills someone else's chickens that the dog gets destroyed and the chickens get paid for or replaced. They used to tie a dead chicken to the back of a chicken killer dog and let it rot off in hopes of curing the dog. Not often successful. Dogs are super important on a farm or ranch. Noem handled hers poorly and wrote about it worse. How did her dog end up in a neighbor's chicken pen miles from home? Had the dog been trained to differentiate between game birds and domestic ones? If the dog had been rehomed to her, why didn't she get it rehomed away from the farm? Why did she include so many gruesome details? I have personally helped slaughter cattle, pigs and chickens. There's no point outside of training to detail the grim task of turning a live animal into food. It is never table talk. You gentlemen almost redeem Noem in your criticism. Almost.

I also have owned bird dogs and they never killed chickens. When I was a yonker our family had a beautiful husky, and unfortunately he started killing a neighbors chickens. At night we kept him in the back yard enclosed with an 8 foot fence, he still got out and went to kill chickens. We had to put him down. And I have known people that have had billy goats that got mean, and they can be dangerous for kids. They wound up in the freezer. Tough old billy goats usually are too tough for anything but jerky, and its usually dang tough. Sometimes it pays to not be judgemental about other peoples actions. Those who lead a country lifestyle do thing different than city folk.

A bird dog does not kill the bird. It waits for the signal to flush after it alerts on the birds. After it flushes the birds up it waits for the Hunter to shoot them. Then the dog fetches or retrieves the birds without putting any markings on the birds. A real nice dog named Luke taught me that. A very gentle, kind and squirrelly dog.

People living off that live stock and depending on it , are not gonna waste their time trying to post the dog on FB ( which fb doesn't allow , and there wasn't internet at the time anyway ) . If i'm not mistaken , the dog was also biting children.
But this is something normal people don't ever publicly talk about or purposely bring up... a literal pet dog, not some mangy coyote or some other predator would have been a very different reception. Animals aren’t people. And I say that as someone who sometimes feels bad about even killing spiders and bees. I spend as much time as I can outside in nature and I sit in awe listening to the birds every day. I love animals. But there comes a point where you have to put things into perspective and remember that animals are just animals. Mother nature is a cruel place full of violence and death. Many animals will eat YOU in a heartbeat if given the chance. For some reason people willingly blot that fact out.
Let’s take her behavior, which was despicable, out of it. Imagine how many eyes went over that part of the book before publishing. Does anybody even like her? Nobody said um…. This doesn’t read well. Well, I have and love my dogs. I will tell you that I have had a neighbor not contain their dogs. They got into our pasture and killed several market lambs that I have raised for 4-H . We had a conversation with them, and they paid me full market value for the loss. The 2nd time, they opted not to pay for the loss. The 3rd time in the same month, we applied the 3-S policy. Shoot shovel & shut up. No one came looking for the dogs, and my remaining lambs survived. By the way, at any given time, we have 2 to 7 dogs. They kill nothing. My cats, on the other hand, are killing machines.
This is the first time I've heard this story about/from Noem. From the sounds of it her story has already been through the horse and is now a steaming pile of political trouble for her of her own making. I'm, I guess what you'd call a farmer sort of - I'm building a self-sufficient homestead with a myriad of critters including dogs and chickens. My dogs would kill my chickens in a heart beat if I let them but that doesn't mean I care about the dogs any less. They are friends of mine and while I have great affection for them and I've trained them as well as I know how that doesn't mean I don't understand who and what they are. I'm certainly not going to shoot them for it. If they get into my chickens it is my fault, not theirs.

When the police killed the shelter animals in Australia because of the lockdowns even though the shelter workers said they would remove them all if given the time and permission, I would consider that an unjustified killing aka murder.

This conversation shows the growing devide between urban/suburban and rural America and our ideological differences. Regardless the person in question. People love their animals, but when animals have behavioral, health or at end of life veterinarians are not always accessible to rural Americans. Even moreso today with a national shortage of veterinarians and rising healthcare costs, and rescues are not always what's best for an animal (the road to hell is paved with good intentions). Historically, when animals had issues we had to deal with the situation. I'm surprised the woke crowd hasn't had 'old Yeller' banned and erased from the Disney catalog. The conversation reflects the incremental brainwashing sweeping our nation and how much we've forgotten/ignore where we've come from and the old ways of getting things done. At the end of the day life is messy and not always pretty. Society has elevated pets/animals to a level where they are surrogate's for relationships missing with other humans.
Yes, but Noem included this in her book to emphasize that she's a tough woman capable of making hard decisions. That's the only context where this makes sense, and it backfired because she is so out of touch that she doesn't realize what you realize-the vast majority of our society lives in suburbia and cities and won't relate. It makes her unqualified to seek higher office and represent Americans.

I have grown up with hunting dogs and house dogs. They are tools to some and family members to others. I’d rather have someone that governs right than allows their emotions to drive their decisions when push comes to shove. The entire issue makes me think that the country has been pussified to point beyond repair.

This segment actually makes Noem more credible than either of you gentlemen. Those of us raised in farm country know that untrainable dogs get a bullet to the brain and an unmarked grave in the woods.
Noem's mistake was to talk about it. There are a lot of harsh, unpleasant realities on a farm or ranch. Talking about it never makes it better.
It's an unspoken country expectation that if your dog kills someone else's chickens that the dog gets destroyed and the chickens get paid for or replaced.
They used to tie a dead chicken to the back of a chicken killer dog and let it rot off in hopes of curing the dog. Not often successful.
Dogs are super important on a farm or ranch. Noem handled hers poorly and wrote about it worse. How did her dog end up in a neighbor's chicken pen miles from home? Had the dog been trained to differentiate between game birds and domestic ones? If the dog had been rehomed to her, why didn't she get it rehomed away from the farm? Why did she include so many gruesome details?
I have personally helped slaughter cattle, pigs and chickens. There's no point outside of training to detail the grim task of turning a live animal into food. It is never table talk.

Who, with a heart and in good conscience, could support such an industry if they truly care about animals? It’s hypocrisy to support an industry responsible for harming so many animals.
Additionally, you can’t technically murder an animal, as murder is a legal term specifically for the unlawful killing of humans. In farming and other contexts, animals may need to be put down for legal and business reasons, and crossing the line in these cases could be considered animal abuse, but certainly not murder, which is an overly dramatic and inaccurate term.
The unbalanced view of animals is just another indicator of growing unresolved mental illness on many levels and is the real pandemic, at least in the West.

I also have owned bird dogs and they never killed chickens. When I was a yonker our family had a beautiful husky, and unfortunately he started killing a neighbors chickens. At night we kept him in the back yard enclosed with an 8 foot fence, he still got out and went to kill chickens. We had to put him down. And I have known people that have had billy goats that got mean, and they can be dangerous for kids. They wound up in the freezer.
