O Come, All Ye Faithful (2017 Christmas Collection) Doherty "Cathedral" Reed Organ

- Originally written in Latin as "Adeste Fideles", this is one of my favourite Christmas carols.
Since I am using the pedalboard on this newly restored instrument, I required help in providing wind for it. Thanks to my dear wife Lori for keeping a sharp eye on the bellows gage and always providing enough airflow, even through the double pedals and full organ!
This organ is the largest reed organ (pump organ) offered in the Doherty Organ Co. catalog - called the Cathedral model. It was made in 1907, in Clinton, Ontario Canada, shipped to Ireland when it was new, and then brought back to Canada in 2015. For the past two years it has been basically brought back from the grave. Awesome work! It's so lovely to see your wife helping you.
könnte Stundenlang zuhören!! Egal welche Lied,so wunderbar gespielt!!
I just can't believe how instrument that is not powered by electricity can produce so many sound!
A good ten years ago, I found this model for sale in an antique shop in Healdsburg, CA. It was in very poor condition. Many pedal rods missing or broken, back panel gone, not playable, pump motor dismantled. Who knocked what other surprises awaited. I think he wanted $1500 for it. It's a joy to see one restored and playing again.
I love hearing your playing. I’ve have several reed organs and love the sound of them more than any other instrument. It’s so awesome to see you and your wife working together to make this truly incredible music. Thank you so much.
Quite a workout for you both! This organ sounds all the better for having escaped a terrible fate. I used to think that woodworm was the reed organ's greatest enemy; then I realised that mice could do even more damage in a much shorter time; but now I accord pride of place to human indifference and neglect. Magnificent restoration!
"human indifference and neglect": This is so true, I totally agree! Too many people do not understand reed organs, they do not have a clue to their capabilities, and deem them as worthless. This innocent ignorance is the biggest challenge for reed organs and harmoniums. If it was not for the indifference and neglect, then the woodworm or mice would not infest these instruments.
What a phenomenal restoration. Priceless.
Thanks! It was quite something to hear this instrument slowly coming back to life bit by bit. I was worried that it was not going to hold together for long, but now it is over a year and it is still going strong!
The two of you do an amazing job of coordination! This piece even sounds better than the introductory pieces you recorded on the Cathedral organ. Many thanks for Lori's good work and your fine artistry.
What a joy it must of been to play this reed organ. I didn't know that there were some that had foot keys! I so wish I could own one like this myself. xD
went to your website and encountered Bach Toccata Fugue d minor:
this performance made more sense than any other I have heard: phrasing, registration, articulation; I hear the influence or relationship of Christ Lag in Todesbanden, and my two years of music theory with Jeanette Cass at Kansas University, 1963-5 came alive;
Your rendition of O Come All Ye Faithful offers spine-tingling worship; no words can convey my admiration and appreciation for your thrilling, superlative musicality, not to mention the decades of practice to make this possible.
Magnificent performance.
I've worked on organs with 32ft pipes, I've done concerts singing along side the most rambunctious theater organs....and the chills and goosebumps that I get listening to a reed organ while you are playing are as good or better than any I've gotten from any other organ! WOW!
Wonderful sound and playing. Loved it!!!
I couldn't help but applaud at the end! Wonderful in every way.
Thank you Ken! I wanted to applaud Lori for the excellent winding with the handle :)
Beautifully played Rodney, the old Adeste Fideles and lovely to see Lori too. Merry Christmas to you both from Sheffield in the UK!
Thank you Alan! Have a very merry Christmas!
Rodney, you are a true miracle worker. I remain impressed with all you can accomplish. This latest project is beautiful and it sounds and looks like new!
I've been waiting for a video of this organ. Thanks for delivering.
Thank you! The next video coming up will be showcasing the 'softer' side of this instrument.
me too! In south America this one is known as "Adeste Fideles". Bravooooooo
You both make a wonderful team!
Wow look at how nice those keys are! The whole organ looks magnificent!! Very good job restoring and playing!!
Rodney & Lori - you make a great team...Thanks for a great rendition of that old carol, sounds wonderful on that dear old organ, now with new life brought to it. great work Rodney!! Merry Christmas and God's richest Blessings to you both!!
Thank you Ruth - and a blessed Christmas to you too!
The dear lady at the bellows is Queen Victoria look-alike. This is just magnificent. I’d see these as a boy in the Victorian houses in Conshohoken…..all silent and damaged of ware, and playable.
Very good!! Thank you for sharing such wonderful and well-played hymns like this !!
God bless you!!
Thank you!
How exciting...enjoyed watching your video as always...all that is needed now is a vintage wooden candelabra sitting atop.!
I would have the pipe top sitting on it if the ceiling was high enough! :)
Great performance and camera work...thanks
Beautiful! This is one of my favorite Christmas carols. My grandparents have a pump organ, I don't know how operational it is today, but I remember always playing on it and being fascinated by it as a kid. Happy holidays from a follower in Italy!
Thank you! Have a wonderful Christmas season!
Merry Christmas 🎄
That is just an amazing organ my Friend, and you are an amazing restorer! The finished organ is just unbelievable to that pile of wood that look like an organ a couple years ago. And great job Lori! I need her to call Jess and give her lessons on working the pump handle. Merry Christmas my Canadian organ Brother!
Nice piece Rodney, beautiful organ and I see your keeping your helper busy. Family affair I see.
That was fantastic! Man can that organ sing! Looks like a pretty decent workout for whoever has to pump the bellows by hand when the organist is playing the pedals though. xD
Thanks Joshua! Yes, after practicing at full organ I wanted to give Lori a break - but she just wanted to keep on going. After 10 minutes it can be a little tiring :)
That is so cool of the sounds that you can get out of reeds nevermind pipes. That was really good. Also I went to the etsey organ museum because of your video on it. I am now interested in playing and learning the organ and I can play a few songs by mind since I do not know how to read music yet. PS happy holidays
These old reed organs (pump organs) are still plentiful, and many times can be acquired at no cost. If you have a technical 'knack', the restoring one can be a great hobby, and if you successfully restore one, the chances are it will not be your last. I'd encourage you to learn organ (or any instrument for that matter), and enjoy the music! Merry Christmas!
Very great pl;ayed as always, I admire your talent. You make the carol and the reed organ shine! Both are indeed very great, but we shouldn't forget the player! We will sing this carol in the upcoming services several times. In Dutch it is called "Komt allen tezamen." I am trying to learn "De herdertjes lagen bij nachte" en "Nu zijt wellekome", two Dutch carols on my folding reed organ. I have made some progress, but it will not be good enough for a recording before Christmass. Well, I am doing this merely for myself.
It is great that you can play for yourself, and enjoy it. I looked up "De herdertjes lagen bij nachte", it is a pretty little tune!
How wonderful and inspiring! Thanks for sharing the spotlight with your lovely wife as well. She deserves a stout egg nog after that workout.
LOL... thanks! I'll let her know :)
Bravo!
Thank you!
I also plan to go to the other organ museum that you made a video on that was much larger
I’ll buy it from you!!
Haha... it's not mine to sell! :)

Oh and some time you should play Hallelujah by Lenard Cohen I can play that on keyboard organ and it sounds okay
I say you two did awesome! Husband and wife working together to create great music. By the way, which hymnal did you use?
+rodneyjantzi *I'm used to a more flamboyant approach* to the last two stanzae of:
*ADESTE, FIDELES / de CANTUS DIVERSI PRO DOMINICIS ET FESTIS PRO ANNUM*
(John Francis Wade) Publisher unknown
after the choir-vocal scores of some notable videos. This Doherty might just have enough resources to pull off the last stanza I picture, with bass sub-octave and treble couplers engaged on both manuals and all ranks on.
I had to hand pump our church organ in the late '40s
That sounds like wonderful memories! I thought that most of the local organs were already converted to electric blowers by then, this is very interesting to know!
Adeste fideles læti triumphantes,
Venite, venite in Bethlehem.
Natum videte
Regem angelorum:
Venite adoremus (3×)
Dominum.
Deum de Deo, lumen de lumine
Gestant puellæ viscera
Deum verum, genitum non factum.
Venite adoremus (3×)
Dominum.
Cantet nunc io, chorus angelorum;
Cantet nunc aula cælestium,
Gloria, gloria in excelsis Deo,
Venite adoremus (3×)
Dominum.
Ergo qui natus die hodierna.
Jesu, tibi sit gloria,
Patris æterni Verbum caro factum.
Venite adoremus (3×)
Dominum.
Æterni parentis splendorem æternum
Velatum sub carne videbimus
Deum infantem pannis involutum
Venite adoremus (3×)
Dominum.
Any chance you could play a Christmas carol named "Christians Awake, Salute the Happy Morn"?
Like this one? Merry Christmas! ua-cam.com/video/JI5wNP8-fRk/v-deo.html
Yep, found it in the recommended videos a couple minutes ago. Love it. Merry Christmas to you too, Rodney.
lots of missing verses in the hymnal being used.....
Out of curiosity is that 2 manual and pedal reed organ a suction reed organ or a pressure reed organ? This organ sounds awesome.
This one is suction, using standard sized reeds (except for the pedal rank). Since there are 609 reeds in this machine it tends to have a big sound when full organ is engaged :)
@@ReedOrgans The undisputed king of reed organs is without a doubt the Aeolian orchestrelle player reed organ which in size is larger than this & in addition to its manual capabilities is also a roll player as i have one of the large Aeolians which are pressure which after 6 months in storage in a dismantled state is now fully working again. Have you ever performed on one of the large Aeolians either manually or by roll? I am suprised you do not have an Aeolian orchestrelle in your collection.
You’re playing in G but the organ pitch is higher. Why is this?
This organ is tuned to the original and period tuning used in 1907, using A452. It was much higher (a little more than a semitone) than the standard of A440 we are used to today.
Bet she wishes she had hearing protection.!
