Rode Wireless Go vs Rode Wireless Go II

- Now that Rode Wireless Go 2 is out, what's the difference between the 2 very popular wireless microphone systems from Rode and whether you should still buy the Rode Wireless Go 1 in 2021?
In this video, I am going in-depth into the differences between the two systems, the similarities as well as what are the tradeoffs, and which system you should pick. This is solely based on my personal experience and I bought both systems with my own money.
You can use the timestamps to reach the part you need to know about. But, long story short, both Rode Wireless Go systems are very reliable, but you will get many more features with the Rode Go 2. Now, if you're on a budget or you are just starting out, 300$ for Rode Wireless Go 2 might be too much for you, then you could easily find the Rode Wireless Go 1 second hand, and that's the version I'd go for if the budget is tight. Otherwise, Rode Wireless Go 2 is simply a better, more reliable, and future-proof version of the popular wireless lavalier system from Rode.

Thanks. Very useful to weight up buying the II vs the first model.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for stopping by :)
Great content, thanks for making this video, very helpful
Glad it helps
Really great video thank you for making this an easier decision for me. It’s my first time wanting a mic like this and think the version 2 will come in handy when I’m getting reviews from my DJ students so thanks again buddy. Very helpful indeed! X
Thank you for viewing the video and for leaving your comment! The second version is indeed better in almost every aspect, but since I posted the review DJI launched their wireless system. I haven't tested it, but I'm sure in the next couple of years we'll have more options.
Until then, if you got the GO II, this should be reliable enough.
Thank you very much! It was very good! I will return the first one I had just bought and will order the second generation one. You answered all my questions! I appreciate it.
Yeey, I'm glad the video helped. Definitely the go II is the way to go right now
Thank you for this clear and easy to understand explanation of the differences between both sets. I appreciate your advices and can only recommend this useful "tutorial", well done
Hey Marc! I'm glad you found the video useful!
thanks for the vid! very helpful
Thank you so much for stepping by and taking time to write a comment :)
I'm happy it helped!
Good luck now creating bummer videos! :)
Dude I love the whole package and it is a lot stealthier as a vlogger to walk around with a small mic on the camera. Form factor could be improved at least on the transmitter. I don't like walking with that piece of plastic attached to my neck(I know you can attach a LAV mic on the GO but it's too much of a hassle for a vlog). Anyway overall I think it's a great product to be used different scenarios. I've been thinking about buying the GO II since it came out. Anyway nice work dude.
They could have done the receiver a big bigger, but I like the package a lot since it covers my clogging needs and my small production needs, so 2 in 1. But if you're looking for reliability, go for Rode 2. It's good enough and quite affordable.
Very interesting, thanks
great video dude. thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
thanks for this video it really helped me make a decision
Amazing to hear that! Did you pick the Go II in the end?
@@FramingReality I haven't pulled the trigger yet but I think I'll be picking up the Go II kit and the VideoMic NTG
Great Video It helps lot
I'm glad it helps and I hope you'll make the best decision based on your needs.
@@FramingReality yes Was confused to choose and it helped me to take a decision.. Keep doing these kinds of videos. thanks
Hey bro tnx for the vedio i have questions ( i lost my transmitter rode wireless go and i still have the receiver) i found different rode wireless go transmiter for selling if i purchase him would he work with my reciver?
Salutare , deci care crezi ca este mâinii pentru evenimente ?
Hey buddy thanks for the video and the infos. I also have a UA-cam channel so i am also looking for a good wireless mic.
Thanks for the reviews.
All the best to the channel
Hey, man! You're very welcome! I'm glad if it helped you and I hope you'll be able to improve the audio quality of your YT channel
@@FramingReality Yes i ll definitely go for Go 2 as i shoot travel videos in Switzerland. For that i would prefer a nice one
@@swisspunjabirocks333 good choice!
Frest video. I just bought the wireless go 1 and for my use I think it’s a good one. I’ll use it in my studio/office, and when I talk to the camera outdoors. I also got the cable converters.
Martin, thank you for taking time to watch the video!
About your acquisition of Go 1, pay attention that it's a bit tricky to connect it to a PC, but it's almost 2 times cheaper than go 2. Other than that, there are not too many differences and since it covers your needs, that that's the best choice :)
I saw someone plug the Go II into a dji action 4 with usbc, does this work for the Go as well?
hello. thanx for the video, very informative ! ready to buy the Go 2 :) one question though : I 'd like to plug the rode videomicpro on one of the transmitter of the wireless go 2 - this will cut the internal mic on the transmitter which is ok but will the transmitter still internally record the sound from the videomicpro (or any other Rode external mics plugged on the transmitter for that matter) ?
Hey, thanks for your comment!
You can plug in any microphone that has a 3.5mm jack into the Ride Wireless Go system and record internally from your microphone. Can be a lavalier or a regular mic. This is the cool part :)
@@FramingReality Thank you for your answer ! ;)
@@pglprod my pleasure! Glad I could help!
Great content! 👏 I had an issue with the TRS-to-TRS cable when the Rode Wireless Go 1st version receiver was clipped on the camera. It would pick electrostatic noise like crazy. I found that if I stretch and pinch the cable a few times and clipping it bellow the camera, it would not act like an antenna anymore. Just wondering if the 2nd version has the same issue. Also, does the 2nd version come with a low-pass filter? I saw a comparison between rode go 1 and synco G1 which has a low-pass filter, and to me it sounded better than go 1. Maybe that’s the feature you were talking about when connecting the both of them and shutting one of them down?
Thank you, Tibi!
About the issue, I never had an issue with the trs cable or the cable not acting like an antenna. Actually , I'm not sure the cable acts like an antenna. This should be tested out.
I'm terms of quality, as you saw/heard in the video, both systems sound really similar, si I think they kept the same microphone pattern and just improved the transmission and added some features.
Btw, I had the synco G2 and from my tests it turned out to be so unreliable. The signal dropped and I was using the system 50cm far from the camera while keeping the line of sight. That was really unreliable for me, so I got the Rode Go 1 which worked flawlessly for me.
Low pass filter. Neither have it but you don't need it since you are not recording outdoors. Plus, you can add it in post.
The feature I was talking about when connecting just one transmitter on the Go2 was the backup track. You get one channel with the desired volume level and the right channel -24dB less, so you can recover the sound on post in case you got distortion.
@@FramingReality Thanks. I was thinking that synco might be unreliable, good to know you’ve tested them as well. Thanks for that! Usually, I’m a Rode fan, they deliver what they promise. 👍👍
Since synco have the g2 with a similar price as Rode Go 1, I wanted more for my money while. And it might be appealing but tbh, I returned the kit after one hour of testing.
And the reason I made this video is that Rode Gos are now stable than I initially thought when I bought my first kit. Battery is good, ease of use, and the transmission is really decent as long as you keep the line of sight.
@Tiberiu Mihai What camera were you using? I've heard of this electric noise issue that is present on Both the original Go and the Go 2 (even more noise if you use the new cable).
The reason for this was made clear by Rode, although it usually appears when you plug it in some Recorders (not necessarily cameras). And the reason being that older devices had different electronic protocols (the electronics inside the device were design for older microphones), as these new ones deliver the signal slightly different (probably the reason why microphones became smaller as technology advanced). The way around this, for recorders anyway, is to use their XLR input with a Rode XLR-to-3.5mm converter and then the recorder's electronics for the XLR input will work just fine, without noise.
Another solution, that I think would work (although not tested because I didn't encounter this problem) is to use a EMI RFI Noise Ferrite Split Core Choke Filter (Anti-magnetic Interference High-frequency Shielding) that you can clamp on your cable somewhere. You've surely seen these, they are found on all kinds of cables from USB Keyboards to Laptop chargers etc. You can try getting one from an electronics store and clamp it on your cable. It should be just like (or better) than you physically clamping the cable with your fingers.
@@ToastedSynapseGaming I was thinking to choke the cable, but after stretching the curly cable a few times I didn’t encounter the issue again. Strange, I know. I’m using the HDMI output from a DSLR connected directly to the power outlet. I guess that’s the reason I was getting so much electrostatic noise. I’ll do what you suggested if it happens again. 👍
Helped me decide thank you! Q: Why do you need to twist the onboard mic on Go 2?
You're very welcome! I'm glad you are now decided :)
And about your question, the placement of the mic it's not that important as it's not a directional mic. More important is to get the mic as close to the mouthas possible.
@@FramingReality Do you know what the twisting is for on the on-board mic?
@@DamianDodd tbh, I have no clue. Try to go in Rode's website and see if they added this in the specification area of the product.
good and usefull thanks
Glad it helps!
As merge cu incredere pe Wireless Go II. Au mult mai multe feature-uri si in plus ai 2 microfoane intr-un singur receiver . Numai bun pentru mire si mireasa :)
So could I use the Rode II as a single transmitter and if it runs out of battery I can turn on the second transmitter and carry on?
Or can I charge while in use?
Thanks
With the Rode Wireless Go II I think you can. However, I haven't tested it.
I guess you have to blend both receivers into Stereo and you might be able to use them as such.
Why would you want to use them like this?
Does anyone know if there's a difference between the microphones inside the Go vs Go ii? Like, is it the same tech/ general microphone or does the Go ii have an improved microphone? In the quality test, they sound exactly the same and it looks like they both pick up the same frequencies, but I was just wondering if the newer mic has a newer/ improved mic
Thanks for your comment! I haven't opened them, but I think they have the same microphones. Usually companies do not redesign sound capsules very often. If we see how popular the Shure SM7B or the mke 50 from Sennheiser, or the SM58, then you'll understand that once you have a good capsule, you will use it for a long period of time.
So I'm supposing the microphones are the same.
how did you hold the mic on your neck?
The mic was on a boom pole above my head. I used a tripod with an extension arm to get it as close to my mouth as possible.
Salutare!
Quick weird question as I have a particular need for internal recording with the Go II and I'm curious if everything works ok (it should, but I wanted to ask):
- Can you start your day recording in an Uncompressed format for let's say 1 hour
- Then get a Laptop/Windows Tablet out (hopefully Phone in the near future) and switch it to Compressed
- And record for 10 more hours in the Compressed format?
-> Because of the limited internal memory I'm thinking of getting the real crucial parts recorded Uncompressed, then other random long stuff Compressed, so I'm assuming, when you get home to your computer and plug the transmitters in, you'll get to download multiple audio files, some that are Compressed and some that are Uncompressed from the same day, right? They don't ask you for a memory format when you switch or other inconveniences?
Hey, thanks for your comment. Yes, you can start in an uncompressed format and then switch to a compressed one. This switch will decrease the battery with about 30 min, but you can do it. The thing is that the dropout are usually quite short, and even if you shoot uncompressed, it's easy to fill those.
I haven't checked about the format, but it shouldn't. Cannot really vouch for that. They are currently working on a mobile version, so it'll be easier to set everything up.
I have the rode one, but I think it doesn't work enough good because it changed my voice! It is not clear enough.
Great
Glad you liked it!
