Rory was so much more than one of the best guitarists. An excellent song-writer, an inventor. He is still my favorit musician and a beutiful human being.
You can argue that Hendrix or SRV is the greatest electric guitar player of all time. Not only is Rory in that conversation, but I'd put him in the conversation for greatest *musician* of all time. Between his stellar electric guitar playing, he was also proficient at mandolin, harmonica, saxophone, etc. On top of that he was a better than average songwriter and one of the most humble artists to ever be in the industry.. He's the complete package in my eyes. Long Live Rory
I was at Woodstock, I'm one of those long haired women running around, lol. And I know people would think me insane but I just didn't care for Hendrix as much as I liked the other R&B bands playing then. Try listening to Ruthie Foster, not many people are aware of her, and she's more new, but her playing and singing will get to you. Listen to her Death comes a'knockin.
100% agreed: also acoustic; a gentleman, courteous , modest. No trappings or toxic behaviour asstd. with "stardom". I only ever was at 1 concert Dublin Xmas 1972.
I could’ve had religion is a very great song- the music & the lyrics are Brilliant! Rory was very superb ! I still love him and respect him very much! ❤ John Coolman
I have no idea how I have missed this video of Rory. It really captures the heart and soul of the greatest white blues player to have ever picked up a guitar. The sweat dripping from him , the passion and the sheer genious slide playing. Gone but never forgotten Rory.
that's true..your comment remind me that he brave to admit he didn't deserve to be creditted of some song he write..music isn't about just money..what a great musician rory is..
This video is such a showcase of what Rory was all about: just creating the most intimate atmosphere you could ever imagine with his blistering tones and voice. I'm not religious but for Rory I would come to church any time of day!!
throughout all the troubles in Northern Ireland from the 70's to the end..Rory Gallagher always played Belfast, the guy could of had religion, i think the blues was his religion ...miss you brother
Sorry to break it to ya Clapton fans, but this guy knocks Clapton right out of the ball park, this IS the KING of BLUES, very underated and understated !!!!!!
Rory is my favorite live player for sure. Definitely has more presence and raw passion on stage. Clapton is extremely polished though. He understands when to be subtle and when to embellish with a full complement of musicians. Just different attitudes. Hard to say who's better. I would say Clapton with Cream would be the closest to that Raw Rory style.
Saw him in Belfast a few times. The last time I saw him was his tour in Hammersmith before he died. In the middle of a solo in tattooed lady his guitar strap broke and he carried on playing like nothing had happened. A mate of mine, a guitarist himself looked on in awe not believing what he was seeing. He said you don't know how hard that is to do,hold the guitar without the strap and play a solo. Not just any solo, but one like that,he was mesmerized and been a fan of Rory ever since. Respect, the man was a genius, a gentleman and a legend, RIP my friend you'll never be forgotten!!
You can watch all the 'great' guitarists on UA-cam from back in the day, but they really do not compare with Rory. . . but you know that already . . that's why you are reading this.
How many times Ive watched this performance I cant rightly say but it must be in the 100s it is totally mesmeric in delivery. The finest blues guitarist it has ever been my pleasure to see. Thank God that these tapes exist and that they have been made available to all via the Tube.
Rory 95, I can't thank you enough. I have just now found my favorite Rory performance. He was only 24! If his magic doesn't move you here. you have no pulse. Stars in your crown for bringing Rory to his people in this venue.
I saw Rory at the Marquee on the Photo Finish tour, I was a teenager. What a night! I wish I could go back and see it again, I would enjoy it 100 times more now as a mature man and guitar player 😃
Oooh! I did never have no religion ! The blues was good enough for me to to be in a live, have you been without any Blues, man! Rory was very so great! ❤ I love This so much - great lyrics too and Rory’s music is very great! John Coolman
Might have been, but he was virtually unknown at the time. That was when musicians made music..not computers with auto tune..It was truly a beautiful time for music.
True to his music & fans Rory never compromised either . I saw him several times in the early 70s when he played in Washington DC at a small club called My Mothers Place which was also frequented by Roy Buchanan. He isl sorely missed as is Roy.
You lucky bastard. Unfortunately I didn't hear the magic that is Rory until around 1998. I can only imagine what he would being doing now let alone seeing him live. What a baddass dude!
@GLASSTOY85 ..I did in the mid seventys at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City..He was the first band ..Tull and Robin Trower were the headliners along with a couple of other bands.Seventy thousand people and no one knew who he was..I mean..flannel shirt (before it was cool)..three piece band..A guitar that looked like it had been dragged down a gravel road..lol.Forty five minutes later and everyone knew who he was and many like me have never forgot !!
Managed to see Rory Gallagher live about 6 times - stunning - favourite album of his - Live in Europe. His live shows were out of this world brilliance only comes in flashes RIP
Saw him 6 times too....I was blessed...for those who are just beginning to catch Rorys playing I have to say you really missed a man on fire when he played
The most and very Reverent Rory Gallagher, you did have religion and you were a preacher of the finest order. No you were not a bad man. I and my brothers with friends had been to your church many times and received your blessings. Nobody took your spirit away, God gave your many graces and gifs which you shared out from the stage to others. Your church was been on stage going full pelt and delivering brilliant gigs. You kind never existed before, douse not exist now and will not exist in the future. You were the main man the G Man
Tck roofing, thank you for your perfect insight. This is Rory at his BEST! Magnificent performance! Hopefully all of Rory's people will meet with him in the afterlife.
Lucky man fella seeing this genius at work/play in the Apollo!! The man was magic. No one like him. Never has been and never will be. Enjoy the blues brother....
HOLY HOLY SHIT! This is absolutely fun-fuckin-tastic. Im sorry for the bad words, it only describes how excited i am to hear this. Goosebumps all over me. This is some raw serious blues. The more i get into Rory the more i can trully appreaciate his musical genius.
Just imagine an old Irish woman hanging her laundry out to dry as she hears Rory practicing his slide and scream interplay.Perhaps the best part of her day….
This isThe Blues by Rory! How good could he be? Nolimts for him! Rory was withouth limits ! I could only respect him very much all the time! And a great Person too! ❤ John Coolman
I remember hearing and seeing adverts in the 70's in the NY area for RG shows, but it seems ironic that this y2b posting of a goddawmighty miracle of a performance should be my first exposure (spoken as a budding slide player) to this man's music. Thank you so much, Rory95 for showing this amazing stuff. What a beautiful blond tele, geez...
Happy Birthday Big Guy. Thanks for The music you left behind. Stood by your grave a while back.......the grass is much greener from my tears : ( R.I.P.
Eddie Stalkperch, I can almost see the greener patch your tears left. What a beautiful thing to say. I have a shoulder-shaking sob at least once a week for Rory. You witness the joy emanating from him to his fans & back to him & I feel crushed by his loss. He did leave us with magical gifts we can enjoy until we meet up above. If you ever get back to his grave please shed some tears for him from me. Bless you.🇮🇪🎸
brilliant version. have this on a cheapo guitar legends dvd would love to see anymore footage from this show. at the risk of being repetitious he's the greatest guitar player God ever breathed a breath into.
Rory Gallagher ,Gods 1st most favorite rocking son, Rory did not have to worry about his religion. I have been told from a totally reliable source that Rory plays 2 gigs each weekend down at the famous club called Kingdom Hall, most nights Phil Lynott and his Celtic brothers Jimi and Garry Moore get up on stage to play a few songs with their musical brother Rory. Jesus never misses a gig when those boys are in town, after those gigs they all go for a few beers and tell a few tall stories, they all are having the time of their lives. .
There is a statue for him in his birth town Stradbally in County Donegal Ireland where they have a festival for him each year. Its also kind of funny that the hospital he was born in was called rock hospital. There is also a street named after him in Cork and a commemoration plack in Dublin and Belfast.
Lol, Thats a badass story man. Wish i was alive then i'd never miss a chance like that. But you know at least a couple hundred fans out of the 70,000 were there for Rory and my hats off to them!
and you know if it was either by accident or on purpose it was stuck in there hearts just like yours. all i am saying is that at the time specially in the early to mid seventys there were die hard Rory fans in the U.S.A thats why his music selled and he kept coming here for true fans like you and me. @@candace3124I'm picky when it comes to vocals, especially female vocals . But she's pretty good! Big Mama Thornton is my favorite female artist
I was in a recording studio in North London once when Rory walked in. I was too intimidated to talk to him. I have been kicking myself ever since.
And probably the easiest chat you could imagine. It just wasn't to be
I could’ve had religion is a very great song- the music & the lyrics are Brilliant! Rory was very superb ! I still love him and respect him very much! ❤ John Coolman

Hugely influential for many of the top musicians of late 20 century - completely below the radar for most.
Sorry to break it to ya Clapton fans, but this guy knocks Clapton right out of the ball park, this IS the KING of BLUES, very underated and understated !!!!!!
so right
He is
Rory for ever

my favorite musician of all time and unsurpassed slide guitarist

Hard to describe a performance like this. It's like Rory is in his own world, and we are witnessing what it sounds like. No equal.
Such a perfect explanation !
This is fucking magic! What a treasure!!!
True to his music & fans Rory never compromised either . I saw him several times in the early 70s when he played in Washington DC at a small club called My Mothers Place which was also frequented by Roy Buchanan. He isl sorely missed as is Roy.
