At the heart of the musical appeal in this piece is the interplay of rhythms based on counts of three and four - the very same phenomenon that underpins so much of rock and roll (Chuck Berry for example). Dowland himself was, in his day, a superstar lutenist, composer and bad boy, often in trouble with polite society's norms. A Renaissance Hendrix?.
@@robbrown8483'Tis nonsense to closed-minded be / And, steadfast, to refuse to see / That music be a Lady Faire / Who changeth dress to charm the ear. / But music-lovers taking care / To see her in her beauty bare / May see her form if they'd but hear.
An extraordinary rendition of John Dowland's "Can She Excuse My Wrongs?"!!! This is due to the brilliant and highly original work of Janelle Lucyk, singer, and Kerry Bursey on theorbo.
Certainly the most spirited version out there. A rare but appropriate ironical rendition. I so much love the way she swings and has fun with it. Let’s not forget that in those times emotions in art were not meant to be “true” emotions but artistic not to say artificial, imagined ones. So it is perfectly legitimate to play with them like these two here are doing.
I really like the phrasing and expression in this one. It often seems the lyrics don´t really fit the melody in this tune, but you made it work, and it sounds just so...easy, fluent...natural.
I love this performance at the faster tempo. You gave a whole new life to this beautiful song. I saw in your other comments it was for a demo, I'd be very excited for you two to release an album!
hes bound to glance up at her during the whole piece even though most of the time he is reading music I think.. he looks in awe and so would I be...she's a lovely great singer
@@M-isty totally agree, I am a classical guitar player and have arranged this piece for myself, recorders and vocals. Thanks for your version, I will listen to it many times
Genial frasiert, intoniert, gemimt und gespielt. Gutes Tempo und zum ersten Mal, dass ich die mehrstimmigen Flöten nicht vermisse - und doch wie wärs - abwechselnd mit Flötentrio?!
Can she excuse my wrongs with Virtue's cloak? Shall I call her good when she proves unkind? Are those clear fires which vanish into smoke? Must I praise the leaves where no fruit I find? No no: where shadows do for bodies stand, Thou may'st be abus'd if thy sight be dim. Cold love is like to words written on sand, Or to bubbles which on the water swim. Wilt thou be thus abusèd still, Seeing that she will right thee never? If thou canst not o'ercome her will Thy love will be thus fruitless ever. Was I so base, that I might not aspire Unto those high joys which she holds from me? As they are high , so high is my desire: If she this deny, what can granted be? If she will yield to that which reason is, It is Reason's will that Love should be just. Dear make me happy still be granting this, Or cut off delay if that die I must. Better a thousand times to die, Than for to live thus still tormented: Dear, but remember it was I Who for thy sake did die contended.

awesome!! 😢 i love this sir Dowland music but, dont know that had a lyric ! in my mind, only my mind, the great John made a melody thinking in Jane Grey...R.I.P my lady 👏👏👏 🇧🇷
You definitely won't like any operatic performances if you hate lively facial expressions and the singer inhabiting of the character of the song's subject... Lighten up.
Ya bro I mean, it’s pretty old school to think sad = slow and happy = fast. in my opinion this version is more endearing and incredibly beautiful. Whatever your speed preference, you can’t deny the beauty of the voice, the chemistry of the musicians and the exceptional musicality!
@@kelesays Is it really a tragic song? The singer is waxing poetic about the fact that he's thirsty and frustrated because some chick he's pursuing won't let him mash her minge. I didn't realize David Mitchell was an early musician and not just a comedian

Cant get enough of this
Love this voice so much! feels like I'm going through an emotional experience while listening.
How does this not have more views? Wow
This is a treasured find ❤
One of the best renditions of this beautiful song. Thank you ❤
This is fantastic!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!
Original, dynamic performance style, great rhythm
I love it when singers (and musicians) really get into songs physically whilst playing and have fun with it.
I really really like this duet. The lute accompaniment is rhythmically solid and the non-vibrato voice is spectacular.💋💋
Suxh a captivating music, sung most beautifully by a equally captivating young woman. I love her bright smile at the finish Bellissimo!
Beautiful spirited performance ... wonderfully sung and played .. bravo!

My favourite moment is at 1:03 when the theorborist looks up to you. Time stands still, as they say.
This is out of this world! Please do more Dowland 🔥🔥🔥
She is gorgeous...
What a sweet, mellow and yet so clear godesses' voice
Congratulations! You have made one of my dreams come true: singing Dowland in a modern style!
I love it, fresh, original and with personality.
What artistry! Love Dowling.

This one is difficult to find but I’d consider it my favourite version!
Stings version is a very close contender personally
Sting's version is one of the worst
Please more Dowland from this channel!
That was perfect. You did well! Applause, Applause, applause.
Excellent singing and playing!!!
Beautiful. Could you publish again with lyrics on screen ?
I'm in love
Such an angelic voice. Her expressiveness is beyond words. It's as though she's channeling God.

Utterly wonderful, to see spirit in the words of the work, and proficiently executed. Thank you.
Mega superb! congrats!
Nice swing to this!...
D'une joliesse sans pareil....
Lovely rendition, JL! Keep up the good work! Please consider making a CD of lute songs.
Too many smiles for a sad song. But, sings amazingly!
That is very beautiful.
She's amazing 🥳🥳🥳
Wow! Beautiful rendition.
Novel approach. I like it.
great,, I can make out the words better than other versions I have heard and it sounds great too
beautiful
tldr: she dumped me, I can't come to grips with it, oh whatever shall I do
This sounds more accurate to what the song would have sounded like back in the 1500s.
We can't know, but probably!

Fantastic!
semplicemente meravigliosa

Is the instrument a lute?
Why does she wiggle around like that? It"s like Suzie Quatro in the Renaissance.
delicious!😍
this song is best performed by a youthful person as is Dolly Parton's 'Jolene' best performed by a woman.
It's hilarious to Imagine "Jolene" performed by a male. Women are less uptoght about singing lovesongs written to or about women.
Shi means auspicious, propitious. Just. SaYin.
