- Discover how to prune shrub roses with head gardener Troy Scott Smith at Sissinghurst Castle Garden.
Roses should be pruned in winter, between November and the end of February, to ensure a great display of blooms the following summer. Here Troy shows step by step how to cut back the old shrub rose 'Isphahan': first, removing the leaves; before removing old dead and diseased stems with a folding saw; and then, using a secateurs, cutting back the remaining stems by at least a third, clipping them just above an outward-facing bud.
See how he judges the final shape of the rose and what your rose should look like after pruning.
