How to make strawflower garlands as natural Christmas decorations with Bex Partridge
It has become a Christmas tradition in my house to fill every space with seedheads and glowing dried flowers. It’s the one time I’m allowed to go all out when it comes to bringing nature inside, and so I make the absolute most of it.
Dried flowers can offer such incredible beauty during the darker winter months, and provide a hint of sparkle and joy in dark corners and cosy nooks. They also offer a way to decorate our homes that has minimal impact on the environment.
These garlands can be made with strawflowers or other
simple dried blooms. Ideally, for the best effect, you want to use flowers that have a circular shape and hold their colour well.
I’ve used a gold-threaded twine to string mine together,
but any length of ribbon, twine or cotton will do. Just ensure
that it is strong enough to hold the weight of the flowers.
It is not necessary to knot between each flowerhead, as the thread should hold them in position - it’s why using a
thicker twine or thread works better for this make.

A warming winter pot using cornus alba and cotoneaster from Jo Thompson
Переглядів 67421 день тому
This glazed container needs only the simplest of components to inject a mood-boosting shot of colour to counter late autumn and winter’s grey skies. The early flowers and later berries of the cotoneasters make this not just a feast for the eyes but an invitation for both pollinators and birds to continue to visit. Even without flowers, the turning colours of the leaves provide drama, heightened...
Chop and drop | the deadheading technique chosen by the head gardener at Sissinghurst
Переглядів 2,5 тис.Місяць тому
When most of us head out into the garden to do a spot of deadheading, we take a pair of our favourite secateurs and a bucket or trug in which to collect the spent flower heads with us. But nowadays, gardeners are choosing an easier and quicker method - just letting the spent flower heads to fall to the ground, covering the soil surface like confetti before they rot down into the soil. Interesting to see the results you’re getting after such a short period. I’m not sure bokashi fermentation produces gases like methane and carbon dioxide - doesn’t it produce an organic acid? Seeing the worms and woodlice means that the tarp isn’t excluding all the oxygen.

    • @AgritonUK
      @AgritonUK 8 днів тому

      Its a hybrid in this situation. Bokashi can be both anerobic and aerobic as they are facultative.
