Used to live there (Seoul), and for sure, while Korean traditional culture is amazing, modern day Seoul/Korea is definitely depressing. It’s incredibly easy to make Korean friends, though, on the upside. But... As a man, too, there’s way too much focus on your looks, and people will be quite blunt about what they think of your looks

@뭐가문제야세이썸띵 you are describing American beauty standards, yes? While you are right about how we should hate it all, I guess I view Korea’s standards differently because you can be ugly and still have an amazing job in America but from the video I learned that pretty privilege very rampant in Korean society? Therefore, it’s much harder to get a good job if you aren’t close to those beauty standards and parents are encouraging their kids to alter themselves because of that. I’m sorry but that is just awful. And I feel like in America, unless you are a celebrity, you aren’t pressured to fit the American beauty standards but women want to fit them because people see them as more attractive and you attract more people, but that doesn’t hinder you from getting a job or romantic partner unless you are like a 4/10 ( this affects getting a romantic partner more than a job). I’m saying that beauty in America is more widely defined and not as narrow as Korea, so I don’t view it as bad.

When I went on a trip to Korea this summer, after one layover and a total travel time of 22 hours, I must have looked like a real mess. My hair and clothes, and of course my make-up less face, everything. As the airplane was about to land and I looked around me, I saw Korean girls take out their make-up cases and even hair curlers and such, fixing up their appearance. I was like: "What on earth are they doing? It's so late, they're probably going straight home and sleep." As I boarded the metro to Seoul, I noticed that nearly everyone was styled to perfection. Especially girls. There are barely any women without make-up. I really felt like people were staring at my and seizing me up and down. I know one reason must be that I am European with fair skin and blonde hair, but I still felt quite vulnerable, and even though I was so tired I just wanted to sleep, I almost regretted not taking the time to fix my appearance. I think this is the pressure the girls in this video talk about. In my homecountry nobody gives a sh*t if you look like you haven't slept in 2 days or if you're out in your comfy clothes. Even though I loved Korea, I don't think I could live there for a long time. That competition and judgment is just too much.

That is exactly how I felt when I was there. I remember going out once and dressing up in what my opinion was to the nines and I felt like a frumpy ugly girl on the streets. For the girls there r like 5 types of hairstyles basically, also many girls have that sort of airy fringe even though it doesn't suit them.
All girls have pale face, bright coral or red lips+brown eyeliners+very faint eyeshadow usually in the colour coral/light brown.
Fashion wise the girls always wear clothing that gives out this clean n simple vibe, nothing too flowery, tribal, boho, colourful, even prints r pretty rare. Also all girls love wearing shorts/short skirts paired with white sneaker and tops which r almost always baggy n loose fitting. Even under the hot sun I don't see girls wearing strapless tops or tops with thin straps.

I feel bad for Koreans for having a society that puts that much emphasis on beauty. I mean, of course looks are important in America too, but this seems super extreme. Like, I feel that if people found out that employers were discriminating by looks (and I'm talking about a job where looks don't matter), we'd likely try to sue that employer. But in Korea, their mentality seems to be "Oh, that employer discriminates by appearance? Well I guess I better get surgery done".

    • @samthepoet107
      @samthepoet107 8 років тому +31

+TheRealityofFake +TheRealityofFake A Korean plastic surgeon doctor told a CBS reporter that since so many students do well in school in Korea what sets them apart is how they look. Whereas in America an employer or university use a set of criteria to choose from to pick the ideal candidate.
That's why some Asians in America claim they are being discriminated when they apply to colleges with great grades and others get in with lesser grades and they are denied. Well some colleges look to see if the student was involved in extra curricular activities in their community or volunteering. That shows potential for leadership which is important in the long run. Whereas the far east Asians are known for rote memory spending lots of time studying. But that works in Asia but not necessarily in America. No one had a choice how they would look to enter this world or what race they would be.

I think Korean youth should rebel, that's how history has been to progress from the past generation. It'll be nice if we see a subculture emerged of the Korean youth rebelling against the norm & expanding the beauty ideal, making it more diverse and not just "pale skin+double eyelid+pointy nose=beautiful". Korea has a very narrow point of view on beauty which is bothersome. It sucks they gotta have these technical traits they wanna achieved for to look "beautiful". But really being beautiful is about your personality. Idk why you need to see someone appearance to judge their skills for the job, that doesn't make any sense. That's discrimination and unfair.

This is why the mindset around looks and emotions really needs to change to Korea. However, the breast surgery costs more than $4000 in Korea. This makes Korean people to easily have surgery with little bit of money.
Also, Seoul is a huuuuge city. 10 million people live here. It is THE LARGEST CITY IN THE WORLD! We have more population than the new york city. Korean hollywood and beberly hills is in the Seoul, literally everything is in this city: the industries, the fashion, the trends, and the population. This cause people to concentrate more on beauty. It damages your self esteem to the point of no repair because the one person in life who should give you confidence doesn't do so.

+BegaiXY it's first hand experience. Yes ofcourse there are mothers that aren't like that, but in general, yes. Asian families aren't that, well, "warm". Again, it's in general. Like I know brazillian culture as well (because i've lived there), and their culture is to compliment their children to the point it's extreme, that's why they're usually quite confident. Again, it's in general, because yes there are always some families that are different but even so we're speaking about the differences in culture. In asia it's quite like the opposite. Asian mom's won't usually tell their children they are pretty especially if they are not "pretty" in society's eyes. Some even encourage plastic surgery or pay for it. Because in asia, society is more important than the feelings of an individual.
It might be hard to understand if you haven't experienced it first hand i guess

+BuzziMuzzi I think you didn´t really get my point. The fact that you sum this horrible situation up to define it as the asian culture was the reason why I even bother to write my first comment. You are saying the asia culture IN GENERAL ( =all asian countries, the majority of all asian mothers) is like that, but I´m saying that it is only about the situation in korea and some individual cases all over the world. FYI there is NO 1 asia culture, every asian country has its own culture. And once gain, NO, nor your first hand experience neither the situation in Korea reflect the so-called asain culture. And Korea is asian, but not ASIA. Isn´t your way quite simple to judge things??!!
And yes, I haven´t experienced this horror before and haven´t even seen other asian mothers being like that, although I´m asian myself, living in europe, surrounded by european and asian cultures here. There are alot of asian mothers who even flatter and encourage their "not beautiful" kids in another way. They didn´t teach them to prefer the outer beauty to the inner beauty/ personality. A lot of them are strict concerning education, but to smash their children´s self esteem and encourage them to do the plastic surgery ...NO!
And I do understand and didn´t deny that there are those bad cases existing, but I´m not talking for whole aisa/ for the IN GENERALsituation of the asian culture as you did. It´s like being hurt by a stone and then hating all stones in this world.
But however, just keep our own opinions, we both are surely not out to convience each other in the way of thinking and judging, right?. Have a nice day.

And it happens in Iran too. And it's very common. All 3 of my best friends have had nose job. Nose job is sooooo common that If you didn't have it people would question it! Also recently lip and cheek filler are becoming a trend and so many people are doing it. So many young girls look like pornstars by the time they're 22 ! They all want to look like western actresses I guess...

Joyce Lo Yeah it does look weird! I too think they have their special features and each nation has it's own beauty. For example people with monolids,Who else except asians have them? it's so special and shows where you come from and what history you have, and it's amazing! But those who have multiple surgeries just to look "white", make me sad.Same happens for Iranians. They have Big dark brown eyes, and special noses! but instead, they use Blue contacts and get a new nose! It's just sad! The image of an Iranian person is rapidly changing and not for good :(

In Iran gender change surgery is a thing too, even though it's a religious country with some conservative rules. Thailand do a lot of sex change surgeries as well and is at the first place. But Iran is at the second place of most gender surgeries according to several documentaries and BBC. Some gay men becomes women to fit better into the society. So people doesn't only undergo cosmetic surgeries to fit into the society, they can do everything it cost to fit in.

A couple of them sound like they’re in denial. Most of my coworkers in Korea had PS, and almost no one I know in the US has. It’s mostly nose jobs here, but the diversity of appearances in the US makes people feel less self-conscious about if they’re in a heterogenous metropolitan area. You put two bananas next to each other and notice the differences right away. But put a banana next to an orange and it’s not worth comparing the two since you accept that they’re just different. That’s not to say people don’t get made fun of as kids. Hopefully more young kids considering PS will watch this and see that there’s a unique beauty in everyone.

Why would so many Korean people think that the facial features that look typically Asian, like not having double eyelid folds, are unattractive and need to be surgically altered? Can't we all appreciate our unique beauty? Why are the standards of beauty so narrow? I think you should delve deeper into this topic and examine the reasons behind why people are self-hating.
