I own a '21 Stumpjumper Carbon Expert that I bought in January '21 when bikes were really hard to find. Previously I had a '19 Stumpjumper Alloy Comp. The transition to the new bike was a little more than I expected, and it took me a little while to get the bike dialed in. The factory recommended set-up doesn't work for me at all, but I found the right set-up after about 4 or 5 rides. I love this bike! I live in a hilly area of North Florida and we have a variety of MTB trails, ranging from flat and flowy to extremely technical and rooty. The Stumpjumper is the perfect platform for our trails. My bike is mostly stock. The only change I have made is to install a shorter stem to make the cockpit fit me a little better. I went with a 33 mm Renthal Apex 35 stem. I have considered installing a Fox 36 fork, but I think it would be over-forked for our trails. Specialized choice of a 34 fork with 140 mm of travel, in my opinion, provides a good balance of weight savings and rigidity, particularly given that this is a trail bike. The OEM tire size is another area where I think Specialized made a good choice. They achieved some weight savings (over the previous version of the Stumpjumper, which had a 2.6" tire) with the 2.35" tire. I miss the extreme traction of a wider tire, but the 2.35" tire with an aggressive tread pattern provides reasonably good traction - the tradeoff is worth it, for sure. Since I bought my bike, the Stumpjumper has become pricey, though maybe not in comparison to the competition. The '21 Stumpjumper Carbon Expert was initially released at a price of $4,695, I think. It now has a considerably higher price. But it's a great bike!
I love my Stumpy! I sold both my 21 Ripley and Switchblade last year for the Stumpy and Stumpy Evo as I was so impressed with both bikes. You said it best with the geo. The geo on both just suited me from the start. I slacked the Evo to 63.5 deg to further delineate the 2 bikes.
Sold my '18 RM Instinct A70 (140/140) last year for the '22 SS Expert and it's amazing how different two trail bikes can be. I loved that Rocky. The Stumpy is immediately lighter and more responsive in every direction you point it. I really appreciate this conversation and all the group-think it generates! I'm still in the 'dialing it in' mode and there are some great ideas here. The Ripmo was on my short list as I think I miss the slightly beefier build so I'm intrigued with some of the front end mods mentioned here today. Jason--I really appreciate what you do. Your authenticity around all-things-bike, passion for riding, and the way you keep it real for the novice junkies like me is great. In fact, you helped me purchase my last two bikes!

Nobody, NOBODY talks during a ride as well as you do and I love it. Its raw and genuine review. Kudos. Not been a Specialized fan of for a long time. I had 2 Stumpys in the past but went Santa Cruz/ Pivot10 years ago. May give them another look.
I appreciate that, thank you!! Yeah, I totally understand the departure from big S... Pivot, Ibis and Santa Cruz all have better suspension than Specialized and you're getting a higher quality suspension system..... that said, this new Stumpy is incredibly light weight, not horst link and surprisingly zippy and agile. I realize it's not for everyone but it's the sort of bike I really get along with for my riding style and trail system. It sort of slots in nicely between the Ibis Ripley and Ripmo in terms of weight, ability and composure. It's been a lot of fun... now I just need to figure out a way to get more traction out of this bike lol

Not to knock YumYum at all because he kills it, but watch freehub mag reviews. He’s more my style riding aka less climbing oriented, but man he can shred and talk the entire time haha.
I bought my 2022 Specialized stumpjumper Evo alloy almost a year ago now in S4 I'm 195 at 6ft. This bike is really nice and I couldn't be happier. My 1st ride with it drove from Minnesota to NW Arkansas to Bentonville and did most the places down there in 4 days put on 80 miles. Came back and over the summer did an additional 600 miles over the summer here. Can't wait for summer again
@dannycazares7683 I was on the edge of either s3 or s4. Honestly try both at a local shop and decide. S4 gives more stability s3 is a little more playful and can maneuver a little more for jumps. All comes down to personal preference.
This review convinced me to order a 2025 Fox 36 Grip X2 140mm to replace my 34 Grip fork for my 2022 Stumpjumper. Cannot wait to get it mounted up and out on the trails! Splurged for a Chris King Dropset headset to go with the new fork. Because, why not?

Love my 21 S-Works. Got an XT group on it, We Are One wheels and a Fox 34. All day rides are no problem. Just built an SJ EVO at the end of the season too.
I’ve been on Ripleys and Ripmos a lot and had many other bikes. I recently built a very similar Stumpjumper with a Fox 36 150 fork up front and it is excellent. It splits the different between the Ripley and Ripmo and the frame is lighter than either plus the SWAT box. The Stumpy really is hard to beat and if you don’t want to spend S-works price, the lesser model carbon Stumpjumpers are the same frame but with an aluminum rather than a carbon link. Identical performance and only a little heavier. I’ve had an S-works and a Carbon Comp that I upgraded modestly. Both fantastic.
I put a Rock Shox Pike Ultimate 150 on my Stumpy. Made the head angle better after I adjusted the stack. It is perfect now and more travel. I wish I would have waited to make the upgrade. Components are dirt cheap right now. Same 2023 fork is $350 cheaper than when I bought it in Nov 2022.
Anthony, I considered the 150mm fork but in the end wanted to keep it a little closer to stock... plus, I just didn't think this bike would be a direct competitor to the sb130/Ripmo so I kept it shorter. Next for me will be the mullet link and a small rear tire... very interested to see how it goes mixed wheels! Thanks for sharing!!
Glad to hear you’re stoked on it! I love mine, built it up with the more dh oriented traverse carbon wheels, 2023 super deluxe ultimate and lyric ultimate (at 150mm). Went for trp dhr evo brakes and I’ve absolutely loved putting this thing into some silly situations! Turns so well, accelerates like a beast!
That stumpy with putting the fox 36 140mm reminds me exactly of the Trail 429 Enduro build. Shorter travel snappiness and versatility with a solid 36 fork for more aggressive lines. Really versatile trail bikes. 👍🏼
I just built up 2 carbon SJ's, one for me and then my wife in the same S-Works color (dusty blue pearl). Prior to purchasing the first frame, I heard from a local shop that is well known for Specialized builds about a serious XC racer who replaced his Epic Evo w a Stumpjumper as it was nearly as light, just as fast, but much more capable when the trails became rowdy, which is crucial for all day race events. I'm 5'11", about 170 lbs, w an S3 and I ran mine w a 90mm Kovee Pro inverted stem for XC events last year to get low and keep the front down on steep climbs. If I'm not racing a course w loads of elevation then I run a 60mm stem. I'm torn on if I should have went for a S4, but I really do love the lightness and maneuverability of the S3. Also building up a mullet wheelset to try w the flip chip in high. Pedal strikes are real w this frame.
I just sold a V1 Hightower and bought a lightly used 21’ stumpy Caron comp and I’ve been very impressed. It climbs like crazy! It’s a stock SLX and it’s very light and impressive.
@@yakosway the geometry is more comfortable with the steeper seat tube on the stumpy. I also like the lighter weight and the climbing of the stumpy. The Hightower depends a little better: hope this helps. You will not be disappointed.
Love your build. I built mine originally with a 34 and DPS. Kept blowing through the DPS even with correct sag and the biggest volume reducer. Switched it over to a Float X and 36 and it's such better bike now for me. Really feels like the trail bike I was looking for now and handles everything the Southeast can throw at it (short of windrock).
@@mtbyumyum it's a night and day difference imo. I have a mediun sized spacer in the float x, so it gives better compliance than the DPS but doesn't blow through it's travel on bigger hits. For me though, we have lots of rocks, roots, and squared edged stuff in GA and southeast area so rear compliance was the name of the game.
@@mtbyumyum word. Assume you mean the trail 429. Float X on the stumpy is still poppy, don't get me wrong. That flex stay is like a spring board regardless the shock. Just helps give a little more comfort for our terrain.
Just adding my 2 cents. I demoed a stumpy a few months ago and really liked it but for me at 185 and knowing I sometimes try silly lines, the flex stays made me nervous. Instead I went with a Ripmo while they were on sale but I used a shorter stroke dpx2 (50 vs 55mm) and a fox 36 at 140mm. Along with that I used a single offset bushing resulting in a 65 degree head angle and lower bottom bracket 140/133 bike (almost identical to the stumpy). So far it’s been amazing. Very efficient, responsive, and capable.
I'm so glad you weighed in on this.... The Stumpy for me sort of slots in nicely between the Ripley and Ripmo in terms of weight and ability. I totally agree with you about the Ripmo and having it set up how you do... I wish Ibis would have stuck with the fox 36 and float x (dpx2) for that bike but oh well... they're trying to make it their enduro bike now... In any case, the Ripmo has a confidence level much higher than the stumpy at higher speed even for a light weight rider like me so I completely hear and understand what you're talking about. @@mtbyumyum On that note, I also tried the Ripley a few years ago but I didn't really gel with it. It did feel fast and efficient but it didn't feel very flickable/playful as a short travel bike (for reference I'm 6'0'), and the suspension wasn't supportive enough for me. I ended up going with a v3 5010 as my fun casual bike. I will say that there is something special about a 65 degree headangle and a 44mm offset 29er fork. It feels direct and stable without being floppy or sluggish. My current Ripmo setup handles more intuitively than the Ripley I demoed but is way more capable. It's just fast everywhere.
@Pick n move Yeah thats a big reason I didn't want a 160mm fork. The 140 keeps it from sinking too much when out of the saddle. The rear suspension should't be that different as far as antisquat goes because offset bushing cancels out shorter shock sag putting the wheel sag point at almost the same as stock.
A lot of people knocked this bike last year as being "unimpressive" and not being great as anything in particular...WRONG! It's great at everything. Truly a quiver killer. If I had to have 1 bike. This would be it...
Riding a 2022 Stumpjumper Expert and can’t say enough good things about it. Directly compared it to Pivot Trail 429Enduro and I feel as confident even with the Fox34 up front. About to throw Zipp 3Zero moto wheels on her and see how it effects traction/dampening!
Nice! I just bought a pack of dps volume spacers for mine... going to try a larger volume spacer and see if that getting better traction. I didn't have time to do it in the fall before the snow came...
I just built up a 2022 Stumpy carbon with the Roval carbon wheels, Lyrik fork, GX drive train with descendant cranks, OneUp carbon bars, Bontrager dropper, and Guide brakes (weighs 28 3/4 lbs with pedals). After only 2 rides I feel I have it well dialed in and it's fast and responsive. I am also surprised at how composed it is even over big chunk and technical terrain. With the right suspension settings I feel the traction is good, I'm not having a ton of trouble keeping the tires planted.
I have the Pro model- one below the S works. Took a few to get the suspension dialed. Had to add a larger rear volume spacer and completely remove the front one. Awesome trail bike!
Just built this same bike up. I also built up a 29 rear wheel for it so I am going to compare against the 27.5. It's currently getting spec'd at the LBS getting anything I may have done wrong righted. The frame comes with a Fox DPS shock but given this review I just ordered a Fox X shock. I'll try both out and report back if I find anything noteworthy. Thanks for the review.
Great review, not kidding you’re flippin’ good at it, and glad to see another Stumpjumper fan. I’ve owned my ‘22 Stumpy pro for a year this month and recently made it a mullet via the Specialized link. At 150 lbs / 5’9” on an S3 in the HIGH setting, this bike really came alive after the link install… I’ll have to try the low setting again so thanks for the traction tip with that. Not to get on the mullet train, but considering the new 5010 CC MX frame. Please comment if you think that’s a bad idea.
New mullet 5010 looks sick!! I rode a mullet 2 summers ago and really liked it a lot. Would love to try the Stumpy with a mullet set up... very interested for sure!
@@radidoc4832I’ve been a SC bike owner since the early 2000’s and currently own two SC bikes (‘19 Blur and ‘20 5010) it’s probably the VPP that just works so well on my local trails. If I made a change it would likely just be a frame swap since the used market is taking a dive. This way I could always put it back. My opinion… the mullet setup just needed the right geo to make it work since it’s been tried before. Cheers
@@robscott8014 Cool. Definitely agree that used market will be open, but since 5010 Mullet is new, it may he hard to get a cheaper frame, unless you get the older frame (not ideal since not true Mullet), but doable in couple of years.
Have an 06' 25th Aniversary Stumpy I am restoring to an excellent Bikepacking, general use, ride-the-divide type bike. Much of it is similar for how long ago, and I hope to succeed the build & get similar enjoyment. Yes that suspension height adjustment is present here on my 05' FSR XC & I have never moved it. I always wondered but just left it in what I think is low. I think the S-Works has it too. Long proven geometry. I like the storage hatch on the newer ones, and I like bigger wheels, though the 26" S-works seems to clear 27.5 × 2.1 no problem with a 27.5 Recon Fork, and 2.3 might barely squeeze in back. For general trekking, few jups, but some stumps, this I think will be fine. Awesome video. Maybe I will find a frame like that in a couple years. On a side note: on my headset I do not love how the top of it seals, like how it looks like dust & rain can just blow in. I thought of looking for a wide rubber washer to fit in there. I like that Ibis bike. Rode em' up in Traverse City, Mi. Great shop. Evidently in 06' mine retailed for $7,300 which is not hard to believe, and the new ones are like 8-10k! Pardon if this sounds nosy, but I am a carpenter looking for a new career: what type of work are you in? Like do you know a good way to get started, or some good bike shops to work for?
I'm 5'10" and went with an S3 as well. I installed the mullet link almost immediately and love it. My trails are basically a pump track/slalom in a forest. Having a smaller mullet bike is so much fun. Like you I found that running around 40 to 45 psi over body weight feels the best. Thought about adding a larger token to the shock, but the bike feels good with more psi. It really doesn't lose any off the top suppleness. I'm running a fox 34 up front which is fine for my trails and abilities, but I'm getting the same feeling as you about needing something a little more stout up front. I have a Cane Creek Helm that I will be using once a decide on either 140mm or 150mm.
Nice, your bike sounds rad! I need to try the mullet link in the spring. As for the 36 up front... it was an easy decision for me. This bike can really hold speed down hill. It's not that it has the charging sensation you get on heavy robust enduro bikes but it has the geo to handle higher speeds and the 36 just makes me feel a bit safer over 22+ mph
I went from a Ripley V4 to a 2022 Stumpjumper Expert. My opinion of the SJ is not the same as yours, as I bought another Ripley and am selling the SJ. The SJ is a great bike, it just doesnt have the same fun factor as the Ripley, for me. Enjoy the new bike!
100% not saying the Stumpjumper is the better bike... It has it's limitations and every bike is a compromise to a certain extent... There are things I like better about the Stumpjumper and things I prefer on the Ripley.

Good review. I have a 2019 S-works Stumpy S4 w/ pike fork and a 2021 Ibis Ripmo AF XL. I love them both but I feel more comfortable on the Ripmo. The Stumpy is good in flow trails but the Ripmo wants to play more. Can't go wrong with either. Thanks for posting this review.
I owned one for a few months, agree it fits perfectly. I like weird bikes though, not something you see 10 of on every ride. Back on the Knolly fugitive for me.
Yeah, well a Fugitive will do the trick for you then. Like you, I prefer to be on something a bit different and not see a dozen of my same bike when I'm out on a ride... these days I see as many Ripley's as I do Stumpys lol haha I might have had something to do with that over the past 3 years lol

As always, love your reviews Jason. I’ve got many friends with either a stumpy or stumpy evo. Clearly it’s a great bike for many. I’ve got a 2020 Tallboy V4 CC with upgraded fork to Fox factory 36 with 140 and I’ve called it the best all-around mtn bike as it does everything really well. I’ve recently also just added the cascade components link to increase rear suspension from 120 to 128. HTA with 140 fork now at 65 and sta at 76.5. All inline with your stumpy. But has the VPP link. Would be a good battle between those two for best all arounders! Cheers!
Have the same bike with similar build but pike 140 - the fun factor is just all there. I’ll never sell it. Have a CC link with SD Ultimate so you can add a little LSC to make it zippier climbing. Such a great bike.. only reason I’d sell my 2020 is if someone wanted to trade for that gorgeous 2021 white model..

A few times I was tempted to sell it and buy 2 bikes (like a Ripley AF deore) and either a slightly small (for me) ebike for my wife and I to “share” 😉 or a alloy Hightower (or similar). But I just kept thinking this is the perfect bike. I don’t want to go more xc for what I ride. And I don’t need a big enduro sled either. So, I’m thrilled to still have it and now get a little more susp with the cascade link. Go Tallboy Gooooo! 💯

You ride so many bikes, I’m curious your go-to these days. I’m in the market for my first bike so binging videos lately. Seems like the Ripley stood out for you. I live in Park City. Used to ride all the time in the 90s, then life and work got in the way. Now with more available time so wanting to get back into. Looking for a “do-it-all” for around this area. Probably mostly blue trails, occasional black. Nothing too crazy. Chasing outdoors, nature and exercise with friends

It's hard to beat the Ripley... it's so good and I think Salt Cycles has a deal on them right now... in any case, if you're riding pretty chill, mostly blue, this is your bike!! If you want to get the speed up higher, maybe mess around on some more difficult terrain you might like the extra safety and support of the Yeti SB140... but for just the occasional black, the Ripley will for sure do the job! Call Chris at Salt Cycles, 801-943-8502 and tell him I sent you... He can also custom build it for you including a longer 140mm fork if you want a little extra safety and support without going all the way up to the SB140 mid travel bikes... good luck and welcome back to the sport! I have a expert 22 stumpy also. Just switched back to the low setting after riding it in the high for a couple months. Like you just felt like I was sitting on top of the bike. But I ride in ma. A lot of rocks and chunk. Will see how it goes. Great bike.
Yeah, I was most interested in riding this bike in the high setting but couldn't get the traction where I wanted it. Even in the low setting the bike lacks traction.... I think I'll get it sorted out in the spring.
Unrelated comment but it grinds my gears to always hear how great Ibis and Specialized bikes are when they're the least appealing to me looks wise which I know doesn't count for anything but it keeps the stoke up when you love how your bike looks. Keep up the good content, no idea how you only have 40K subs.

I rode both the ripley and stumpjumper for a year. The are both really great bikes but the stumpjumper is a little more versatile and the ripley has better suspension design. I was a little bummed out when ibis updated the ripley without giving it the AF head angle.
I hear what you're saying... I just wouldn't want to tackle a lot of ground on that bike. Think 2 1/2+ hours.... Not very efficient when compared to bike in the shorter travel 29er category.
@@mtbyumyum My only complaint with the evo I think it has a little to much travel but it is a great bike. Think if you had this bike and the evo you would be set depending on the trail for the day.

Hi I bought my Trail 429 on your recommendation and loved it but the relaxed seat tube and low front are a bit tight for my back so I’m looking at new SB140 and Stumpjumper EVO s-works. If you could refer to the Stumpjumper when you review the new Yeti that would be great. Seems like the Stumpjumper sizing is slightly different to the Yeti: shorter reach, higher stack.

Just finished watching your review - i had a similar progression as you - came from a Tallboy (similar to the Ripley in terms of geometery and travel). For me the stumpjumper just has “more better” of everything I had and loved on that platform, with the added benefit in my case of being lighter. I’m currently trying to decide if it will be my “XC-ish bike” this year. I’ve also got a Stumpjumper Evo for bigger stuff and park days. Funny story though, i’m 5’5” and have a S3 Stumpy, but a S2 Evo 🫠
Yeah, it's wild how light weight this bike is and can still handle high speeds well. The geo is spot on in my experience mixed with this light weight package is very appealing. Similar geo as the Ripmo but just does it in a different way. I really like this as a light weight set up. Would be fun to have an Evo but the Ripmo just does that category better in my experience. Or even the Evil Offering.
@@mtbyumyum Agree with the lightweight sentiment! I’ve got Berd XC wheels on mine with Ray/Ralph tires. It’s hovering around the 25lb mark - which is why its pretty much an overbuilt XC machine for me at the moment. I’ve not ridden the ripmo, but have heard good things. The Evo is such a versatile bike though with the head angle adjust and flip chip in the back though (I leave it in the long/low setting).
i'm trying to decide between a stumpjumper 14 pro and an sb140 c2 - i currently live in colorado so deal with a lot of chunk so it seems like the sb140 might provide a bit better traction on the climbs and capability on the descents, but i'm drawn to the playfulness of the stumpy (along with the better components). i love playing around on uphill tech, and flowy/fun descents (with tech, but don't feel the need to bomb through rock gardens or hit big features). it seems like you're a fan of both, but I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Honestly, the SB120 is much more similar to the stump jumper than the SB140. I think that’s the direction you might want to go. Plus, they’re on huge discounts right now through Salt Cycles. Call Chris and ask him about it. 801-943-8502.

the 160mm fork on the shadowcat makes it a little tough to compare.... I'll just say that getting on the Shadowcat after riding the Stumpy almost exclusively for a month I was really shocked at how much better the suspension felt on the Pivot. Loads more traction, more damp and controlled. I couldn't believe I was on a bike with a small DPS can out back... was really eye opening at how much work the stumpy needs out back.

I did a test ride on this and like the feedback from the rear wheel as I pedal. I tested a Ripley and it has a vague type of feedback but it does pedal efficiently. I tested an S2 Specialized and a Small for Ibis. Now looking at the geo on the Ibis, the size medium is very similar to the S2 except for the extra 20mil of reach and slightly longer wheelbase (3mils). What bothered me with the Ripley and other size small bikes were that my knees were close to the bar whereas the SJ I didnt have knee clearance issues. I'm at that weird size where I fall at the tall end of the small and the short end of a medium. The small Ripley put me in a more upright position, but I prefer the longer reach on an S2 SJ. I ride road bikes so I like leaning a bit more. Even though I'm no expert, your review between the two is kinda (not really) similar to my experience. I liked the riding position of the SJ than the compactness of the Ripley, but now I have to take a test ride on a size medium to see if it fits me better.
Can you do a review and share your thoughts on a merida one forty any carbon model? I like their design and i would have liked for someone to share their personal thoughts about how it rides.
Good review. Really interested in this bike. If I designed a bike on numbers these would the numbers. I keep waiting for Revel to release a V2 Rascal hoping for similar numbers (I really like the traction CBF offers) but I might have to try out a Stumpy in the meantime. I got some decent ride time on the previous Stumpy and really liked it.
You and me both! I seriously can't wait for a new Rascal... I was asked recently what bike I'm most excited about right now and without hesitation its the Rail 29. I can't wait to give that bike a go... they're impossible to fine too. It looks like a better version of the Ripmo... I really like the CBF suspension.
@@mtbyumyum I ordered a Rail 29 last year and I should have it in a week or two, so excited. I had a V2 Ripmo and loved it. I see the Rail 29 as a very similar bike with a sophisticated CBF suspension platform that can challenge the DW Link in every aspect. I'm going to run a Fox 36 at 160mm instead of the 38, I think it suits the nature of the bike more and it will save half a pound. Looking forward to your thoughts on the Rail 29 once you get on one!
Better isn't the right word. It's different. T429 climbs better, feels more damp, has better traction everywhere and can cover more ground quicker. The Stumpy is more fun. Snappier, more zippy, and faster down hill... we'll talk about this more in the live stream Thursday evening.... it's confusing when I write it down... easier to talk about!

The Yeti will pedal better and have more traction… buddy it weighs more and isn’t as simple. Also a slightly more demanding bike to ride. The stumpy is more easy going. Tough choice. I know you changed your fork from a 34 to a 36 and liked that. But you could not get the Shock the way you wanted, too soft or too stiff, traction issues. Why didn’t you also change the rear Shock with either the Fox X or Rockshox Super Delux Ultimate? This may make the bike perfect? So, I weight 210 on the Sworks S5. Is it worth to change the fork and/or the Shock? If so go Fox or Rockshox? should I mix brands? Thank you, please let me know. Thank you
Hi, really enjoy your reviews! Just got my buddy to switch to a Ripmo V2s from his 2018 S-Works Stumpjumper. He liked the Ripmo V2s climbing more than the current Stumpjumper EVO. Wanted your thoughts on the Ibis Mojo in 2023. They seem to be on clearance now and was thinking about picking one up for my 19 yr old son who's 5'8". He rode my Ripmo AF large and found it too big. He loves the SB165 that he rents at the bike park, but that's out of my range right now. Appreciate your thoughts.
Coming in 2023, Ibis Ripley v5, 130mm Rear and 140mm Front. Also, comes with the old head badge. And a garbage can lid on the down tube for in frame storage and a flop chip!

I really really liked the sj evo! Probably the best fitting bike I've ever been on. Fit me like a glove! That said, the rear end could get a bit chattery in rough section and overall I prefer the ride, climbing and overall feel of the SB140 to that of the SJ evo. With all of that said, If the SJ evo had to me by choice for a longer ish sort of bike, I would be thrilled! I really like it a lot!
With the Fox 36 you ran, did you stick with 140mm of travel up front? Or did you also up the travel? I have a 2022 and looking for beefier fork... Thanks, keep the reviews coming,
They're pretty different. The T429 is a more polite and mild mannered bike. More sophisticated is maybe how to say it. haha The stumpy is more poppy and playful. More similar to the Ripley in terms of fun factor. Although the ripley and stumpy are different as well... haha

Great video. Just bought 2022 SJ in S3 I'm 5'9 and was wondering about going with a little shorter stem to. Do you feel much of a difference compared to the stock stem? Thanks in advance.
Yeah, I always notice stem length and bar width right away... Shorter stem sort of speeds up the steering and can make the bike feel more punchy on the down hills. Longer stem is nice to sort of slow things down just a little and give you a more stretched out feel.... nice on the climbs and traversing varied terrain. There's really no wrong choice or length just what feels best for you and the bike and the type of riding you're wanting to do.
Is that a blue color? I see it looks dark blue when the camera is on you, but the close up looks more purple. Looks like specialized offers that as frame-only now ...
Another great informative review bud, question, how would you compare it to the 2022 non-carbon Stumpy with the older suspension system. I heard the older one is not as lively as the new flex stays system but the older one is 'plusher' and more comfortable. Would that be a fair assessment?

I own a '21 Stumpjumper Carbon Expert that I bought in January '21 when bikes were really hard to find. Previously I had a '19 Stumpjumper Alloy Comp. The transition to the new bike was a little more than I expected, and it took me a little while to get the bike dialed in. The factory recommended set-up doesn't work for me at all, but I found the right set-up after about 4 or 5 rides. I love this bike! I live in a hilly area of North Florida and we have a variety of MTB trails, ranging from flat and flowy to extremely technical and rooty. The Stumpjumper is the perfect platform for our trails. My bike is mostly stock. The only change I have made is to install a shorter stem to make the cockpit fit me a little better. I went with a 33 mm Renthal Apex 35 stem. I have considered installing a Fox 36 fork, but I think it would be over-forked for our trails. Specialized choice of a 34 fork with 140 mm of travel, in my opinion, provides a good balance of weight savings and rigidity, particularly given that this is a trail bike. The OEM tire size is another area where I think Specialized made a good choice. They achieved some weight savings (over the previous version of the Stumpjumper, which had a 2.6" tire) with the 2.35" tire. I miss the extreme traction of a wider tire, but the 2.35" tire with an aggressive tread pattern provides reasonably good traction - the tradeoff is worth it, for sure. Since I bought my bike, the Stumpjumper has become pricey, though maybe not in comparison to the competition. The '21 Stumpjumper Carbon Expert was initially released at a price of $4,695, I think. It now has a considerably higher price. But it's a great bike!
I love my Stumpy! I sold both my 21 Ripley and Switchblade last year for the Stumpy and Stumpy Evo as I was so impressed with both bikes. You said it best with the geo. The geo on both just suited me from the start. I slacked the Evo to 63.5 deg to further delineate the 2 bikes.

Sold my '18 RM Instinct A70 (140/140) last year for the '22 SS Expert and it's amazing how different two trail bikes can be. I loved that Rocky. The Stumpy is immediately lighter and more responsive in every direction you point it. I really appreciate this conversation and all the group-think it generates! I'm still in the 'dialing it in' mode and there are some great ideas here. The Ripmo was on my short list as I think I miss the slightly beefier build so I'm intrigued with some of the front end mods mentioned here today.

Not been a Specialized fan of for a long time. I had 2 Stumpys in the past but went Santa Cruz/ Pivot10 years ago. May give them another look.
I appreciate that, thank you!! Yeah, I totally understand the departure from big S... Pivot, Ibis and Santa Cruz all have better suspension than Specialized and you're getting a higher quality suspension system..... that said, this new Stumpy is incredibly light weight, not horst link and surprisingly zippy and agile. I realize it's not for everyone but it's the sort of bike I really get along with for my riding style and trail system. It sort of slots in nicely between the Ibis Ripley and Ripmo in terms of weight, ability and composure. It's been a lot of fun... now I just need to figure out a way to get more traction out of this bike lol

I bought my 2022 Specialized stumpjumper Evo alloy almost a year ago now in S4 I'm 195 at 6ft. This bike is really nice and I couldn't be happier. My 1st ride with it drove from Minnesota to NW Arkansas to Bentonville and did most the places down there in 4 days put on 80 miles. Came back and over the summer did an additional 600 miles over the summer here. Can't wait for summer again

@dannycazares7683 I was on the edge of either s3 or s4. Honestly try both at a local shop and decide. S4 gives more stability s3 is a little more playful and can maneuver a little more for jumps. All comes down to personal preference.
This review convinced me to order a 2025 Fox 36 Grip X2 140mm to replace my 34 Grip fork for my 2022 Stumpjumper. Cannot wait to get it mounted up and out on the trails!

I’ve been on Ripleys and Ripmos a lot and had many other bikes. I recently built a very similar Stumpjumper with a Fox 36 150 fork up front and it is excellent. It splits the different between the Ripley and Ripmo and the frame is lighter than either plus the SWAT box.
The Stumpy really is hard to beat and if you don’t want to spend S-works price, the lesser model carbon Stumpjumpers are the same frame but with an aluminum rather than a carbon link. Identical performance and only a little heavier.
I’ve had an S-works and a Carbon Comp that I upgraded modestly. Both fantastic.
I put a Rock Shox Pike Ultimate 150 on my Stumpy. Made the head angle better after I adjusted the stack. It is perfect now and more travel. I wish I would have waited to make the upgrade. Components are dirt cheap right now. Same 2023 fork is $350 cheaper than when I bought it in Nov 2022.
Anthony, I considered the 150mm fork but in the end wanted to keep it a little closer to stock... plus, I just didn't think this bike would be a direct competitor to the sb130/Ripmo so I kept it shorter. Next for me will be the mullet link and a small rear tire... very interested to see how it goes mixed wheels! Thanks for sharing!!
Glad to hear you’re stoked on it! I love mine, built it up with the more dh oriented traverse carbon wheels, 2023 super deluxe ultimate and lyric ultimate (at 150mm). Went for trp dhr evo brakes and I’ve absolutely loved putting this thing into some silly situations! Turns so well, accelerates like a beast!
That stumpy with putting the fox 36 140mm reminds me exactly of the Trail 429 Enduro build. Shorter travel snappiness and versatility with a solid 36 fork for more aggressive lines. Really versatile trail bikes. 👍🏼

I just built up 2 carbon SJ's, one for me and then my wife in the same S-Works color (dusty blue pearl). Prior to purchasing the first frame, I heard from a local shop that is well known for Specialized builds about a serious XC racer who replaced his Epic Evo w a Stumpjumper as it was nearly as light, just as fast, but much more capable when the trails became rowdy, which is crucial for all day race events.
I'm 5'11", about 170 lbs, w an S3 and I ran mine w a 90mm Kovee Pro inverted stem for XC events last year to get low and keep the front down on steep climbs. If I'm not racing a course w loads of elevation then I run a 60mm stem. I'm torn on if I should have went for a S4, but I really do love the lightness and maneuverability of the S3.
Also building up a mullet wheelset to try w the flip chip in high. Pedal strikes are real w this frame.

I just sold a V1 Hightower and bought a lightly used 21’ stumpy Caron comp and I’ve been very impressed. It climbs like crazy! It’s a stock SLX and it’s very light and impressive.

@@yakosway the geometry is more comfortable with the steeper seat tube on the stumpy. I also like the lighter weight and the climbing of the stumpy. The Hightower depends a little better: hope this helps. You will not be disappointed.
Love your build. I built mine originally with a 34 and DPS. Kept blowing through the DPS even with correct sag and the biggest volume reducer. Switched it over to a Float X and 36 and it's such better bike now for me. Really feels like the trail bike I was looking for now and handles everything the Southeast can throw at it (short of windrock).

@@mtbyumyum it's a night and day difference imo. I have a mediun sized spacer in the float x, so it gives better compliance than the DPS but doesn't blow through it's travel on bigger hits. For me though, we have lots of rocks, roots, and squared edged stuff in GA and southeast area so rear compliance was the name of the game.

@@mtbyumyum word. Assume you mean the trail 429. Float X on the stumpy is still poppy, don't get me wrong. That flex stay is like a spring board regardless the shock. Just helps give a little more comfort for our terrain.
Just adding my 2 cents. I demoed a stumpy a few months ago and really liked it but for me at 185 and knowing I sometimes try silly lines, the flex stays made me nervous. Instead I went with a Ripmo while they were on sale but I used a shorter stroke dpx2 (50 vs 55mm) and a fox 36 at 140mm. Along with that I used a single offset bushing resulting in a 65 degree head angle and lower bottom bracket 140/133 bike (almost identical to the stumpy). So far it’s been amazing. Very efficient, responsive, and capable.
I'm so glad you weighed in on this.... The Stumpy for me sort of slots in nicely between the Ripley and Ripmo in terms of weight and ability. I totally agree with you about the Ripmo and having it set up how you do... I wish Ibis would have stuck with the fox 36 and float x (dpx2) for that bike but oh well... they're trying to make it their enduro bike now... In any case, the Ripmo has a confidence level much higher than the stumpy at higher speed even for a light weight rider like me so I completely hear and understand what you're talking about. @@mtbyumyum On that note, I also tried the Ripley a few years ago but I didn't really gel with it. It did feel fast and efficient but it didn't feel very flickable/playful as a short travel bike (for reference I'm 6'0'), and the suspension wasn't supportive enough for me. I ended up going with a v3 5010 as my fun casual bike. I will say that there is something special about a 65 degree headangle and a 44mm offset 29er fork. It feels direct and stable without being floppy or sluggish. My current Ripmo setup handles more intuitively than the Ripley I demoed but is way more capable. It's just fast everywhere.
@Pick n move Yeah thats a big reason I didn't want a 160mm fork. The 140 keeps it from sinking too much when out of the saddle. The rear suspension should't be that different as far as antisquat goes because offset bushing cancels out shorter shock sag putting the wheel sag point at almost the same as stock.
A lot of people knocked this bike last year as being "unimpressive" and not being great as anything in particular...WRONG! It's great at everything. Truly a quiver killer. If I had to have 1 bike. This would be it...
It has it's limitations but so does every bike... it's a clear candidate for a 1-bike quiver in my experience!

Riding a 2022 Stumpjumper Expert and can’t say enough good things about it. Directly compared it to Pivot Trail 429Enduro and I feel as confident even with the Fox34 up front.

Nice! I just bought a pack of dps volume spacers for mine... going to try a larger volume spacer and see if that getting better traction. I didn't have time to do it in the fall before the snow came...
I just built up a 2022 Stumpy carbon with the Roval carbon wheels, Lyrik fork, GX drive train with descendant cranks, OneUp carbon bars, Bontrager dropper, and Guide brakes (weighs 28 3/4 lbs with pedals). After only 2 rides I feel I have it well dialed in and it's fast and responsive. I am also surprised at how composed it is even over big chunk and technical terrain. With the right suspension settings I feel the traction is good, I'm not having a ton of trouble keeping the tires planted.

I have the Pro model- one below the S works. Took a few to get the suspension dialed. Had to add a larger rear volume spacer and completely remove the front one. Awesome trail bike!

Just built this same bike up. I also built up a 29 rear wheel for it so I am going to compare against the 27.5. It's currently getting spec'd at the LBS getting anything I may have done wrong righted. The frame comes with a Fox DPS shock but given this review I just ordered a Fox X shock. I'll try both out and report back if I find anything noteworthy. Thanks for the review.
Great review, not kidding you’re flippin’ good at it, and glad to see another Stumpjumper fan. I’ve owned my ‘22 Stumpy pro for a year this month and recently made it a mullet via the Specialized link. At 150 lbs / 5’9” on an S3 in the HIGH setting, this bike really came alive after the link install… I’ll have to try the low setting again so thanks for the traction tip with that. Not to get on the mullet train, but considering the new 5010 CC MX frame. Please comment if you think that’s a bad idea.

@@radidoc4832I’ve been a SC bike owner since the early 2000’s and currently own two SC bikes (‘19 Blur and ‘20 5010) it’s probably the VPP that just works so well on my local trails. If I made a change it would likely just be a frame swap since the used market is taking a dive. This way I could always put it back. My opinion… the mullet setup just needed the right geo to make it work since it’s been tried before. Cheers

Have an 06' 25th Aniversary Stumpy I am restoring to an excellent Bikepacking, general use, ride-the-divide type bike. Much of it is similar for how long ago, and I hope to succeed the build & get similar enjoyment.
Yes that suspension height adjustment is present here on my 05' FSR XC & I have never moved it. I always wondered but just left it in what I think is low. I think the S-Works has it too.
Long proven geometry. I like the storage hatch on the newer ones, and I like bigger wheels, though the 26" S-works seems to clear 27.5 × 2.1 no problem with a 27.5 Recon Fork, and 2.3 might barely squeeze in back. For general trekking, few jups, but some stumps, this I think will be fine.

On a side note: on my headset I do not love how the top of it seals, like how it looks like dust & rain can just blow in. I thought of looking for a wide rubber washer to fit in there.

Pardon if this sounds nosy, but I am a carpenter looking for a new career: what type of work are you in? Like do you know a good way to get started, or some good bike shops to work for?
I'm 5'10" and went with an S3 as well. I installed the mullet link almost immediately and love it. My trails are basically a pump track/slalom in a forest. Having a smaller mullet bike is so much fun. Like you I found that running around 40 to 45 psi over body weight feels the best. Thought about adding a larger token to the shock, but the bike feels good with more psi. It really doesn't lose any off the top suppleness. I'm running a fox 34 up front which is fine for my trails and abilities, but I'm getting the same feeling as you about needing something a little more stout up front. I have a Cane Creek Helm that I will be using once a decide on either 140mm or 150mm.
Nice, your bike sounds rad! I need to try the mullet link in the spring. As for the 36 up front... it was an easy decision for me. This bike can really hold speed down hill. It's not that it has the charging sensation you get on heavy robust enduro bikes but it has the geo to handle higher speeds and the 36 just makes me feel a bit safer over 22+ mph
I went from a Ripley V4 to a 2022 Stumpjumper Expert. My opinion of the SJ is not the same as yours, as I bought another Ripley and am selling the SJ. The SJ is a great bike, it just doesnt have the same fun factor as the Ripley, for me. Enjoy the new bike!
100% not saying the Stumpjumper is the better bike... It has it's limitations and every bike is a compromise to a certain extent... There are things I like better about the Stumpjumper and things I prefer on the Ripley.

Good review. I have a 2019 S-works Stumpy S4 w/ pike fork and a 2021 Ibis Ripmo AF XL. I love them both but I feel more comfortable on the Ripmo. The Stumpy is good in flow trails but the Ripmo wants to play more. Can't go wrong with either. Thanks for posting this review.

As always, love your reviews Jason. I’ve got many friends with either a stumpy or stumpy evo. Clearly it’s a great bike for many. I’ve got a 2020 Tallboy V4 CC with upgraded fork to Fox factory 36 with 140 and I’ve called it the best all-around mtn bike as it does everything really well. I’ve recently also just added the cascade components link to increase rear suspension from 120 to 128. HTA with 140 fork now at 65 and sta at 76.5. All inline with your stumpy. But has the VPP link. Would be a good battle between those two for best all arounders! Cheers!
Have the same bike with similar build but pike 140 - the fun factor is just all there. I’ll never sell it. Have a CC link with SD Ultimate so you can add a little LSC to make it zippier climbing. Such a great bike.. only reason I’d sell my 2020 is if someone wanted to trade for that gorgeous 2021 white model..

A few times I was tempted to sell it and buy 2 bikes (like a Ripley AF deore) and either a slightly small (for me) ebike for my wife and I to “share” 😉 or a alloy Hightower (or similar). But I just kept thinking this is the perfect bike. I don’t want to go more xc for what I ride. And I don’t need a big enduro sled either. So, I’m thrilled to still have it and now get a little more susp with the cascade link. Go Tallboy Gooooo! 💯

Used to ride all the time in the 90s, then life and work got in the way. Now with more available time so wanting to get back into. Looking for a “do-it-all” for around this area. It's hard to beat the Ripley... it's so good and I think Salt Cycles has a deal on them right now... in any case, if you're riding pretty chill, mostly blue, this is your bike!! If you want to get the speed up higher, maybe mess around on some more difficult terrain you might like the extra safety and support of the Yeti SB140... but for just the occasional black, the Ripley will for sure do the job! He can also custom build it for you including a longer 140mm fork if you want a little extra safety and support without going all the way up to the SB140 mid travel bikes... good luck and welcome back to the sport! I have a expert 22 stumpy also. Just switched back to the low setting after riding it in the high for a couple months. Like you just felt like I was sitting on top of the bike. But I ride in ma. A lot of rocks and chunk. Will see how it goes. Great bike.
Yeah, I was most interested in riding this bike in the high setting but couldn't get the traction where I wanted it. Even in the low setting the bike lacks traction.... I think I'll get it sorted out in the spring.
Unrelated comment but it grinds my gears to always hear how great Ibis and Specialized bikes are when they're the least appealing to me looks wise which I know doesn't count for anything but it keeps the stoke up when you love how your bike looks. Keep up the good content, no idea how you only have 40K subs.

I rode both the ripley and stumpjumper for a year. The are both really great bikes but the stumpjumper is a little more versatile and the ripley has better suspension design. I was a little bummed out when ibis updated the ripley without giving it the AF head angle.
Yeah, I'm sure Ibis will update it sooner than later... I just hope they don't go to far with it...
The Stumpy Evo Is the Trail perfection!! Really is…no flex stays… So plush and enough efficient…
I hear what you're saying... I just wouldn't want to tackle a lot of ground on that bike. Think 2 1/2+ hours.... Not very efficient when compared to bike in the shorter travel 29er category.
@@mtbyumyum My only complaint with the evo I think it has a little to much travel but it is a great bike. Think if you had this bike and the evo you would be set depending on the trail for the day.
I would build a S4 Sworks stumpy today exactly as you did with XTR - 'IF' I could find a Frame in S4.
If you do, you should consider swapping the dps shock out for the new float shock

I bought my Trail 429 on your recommendation and loved it but the relaxed seat tube and low front are a bit tight for my back so I’m looking at new SB140 and Stumpjumper EVO s-works. If you could refer to the Stumpjumper when you review the new Yeti that would be great. Seems like the Stumpjumper sizing is slightly different to the Yeti: shorter reach, higher stack.

Just finished watching your review - i had a similar progression as you - came from a Tallboy (similar to the Ripley in terms of geometery and travel). For me the stumpjumper just has “more better” of everything I had and loved on that platform, with the added benefit in my case of being lighter. I’m currently trying to decide if it will be my “XC-ish bike” this year. I’ve also got a Stumpjumper Evo for bigger stuff and park days.
Funny story though, i’m 5’5” and have a S3 Stumpy, but a S2 Evo 🫠
Yeah, it's wild how light weight this bike is and can still handle high speeds well. The geo is spot on in my experience mixed with this light weight package is very appealing. Similar geo as the Ripmo but just does it in a different way. I really like this as a light weight set up. Would be fun to have an Evo but the Ripmo just does that category better in my experience. Or even the Evil Offering.
@@mtbyumyum Agree with the lightweight sentiment! I’ve got Berd XC wheels on mine with Ray/Ralph tires. It’s hovering around the 25lb mark - which is why its pretty much an overbuilt XC machine for me at the moment.
I’ve not ridden the ripmo, but have heard good things. The Evo is such a versatile bike though with the head angle adjust and flip chip in the back though (I leave it in the long/low setting).
i'm trying to decide between a stumpjumper 14 pro and an sb140 c2 - i currently live in colorado so deal with a lot of chunk so it seems like the sb140 might provide a bit better traction on the climbs and capability on the descents, but i'm drawn to the playfulness of the stumpy (along with the better components). i love playing around on uphill tech, and flowy/fun descents (with tech, but don't feel the need to bomb through rock gardens or hit big features). it seems like you're a fan of both, but I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Honestly, the SB120 is much more similar to the stump jumper than the SB140. I think that’s the direction you might want to go. Plus, they’re on huge discounts right now through Salt Cycles. Call Chris and ask him about it. 801-943-8502.

how does the pivot shadow cat compare climbing and descending to the stumpy? Your recent review of the shadow cat has me intrigued.
the 160mm fork on the shadowcat makes it a little tough to compare.... I'll just say that getting on the Shadowcat after riding the Stumpy almost exclusively for a month I was really shocked at how much better the suspension felt on the Pivot. Loads more traction, more damp and controlled. I couldn't believe I was on a bike with a small DPS can out back... was really eye opening at how much work the stumpy needs out back.

How it compares to transition spur and Scott spark?
I did a test ride on this and like the feedback from the rear wheel as I pedal. I tested a Ripley and it has a vague type of feedback but it does pedal efficiently. I tested an S2 Specialized and a Small for Ibis. Now looking at the geo on the Ibis, the size medium is very similar to the S2 except for the extra 20mil of reach and slightly longer wheelbase (3mils).
What bothered me with the Ripley and other size small bikes were that my knees were close to the bar whereas the SJ I didnt have knee clearance issues. I'm at that weird size where I fall at the tall end of the small and the short end of a medium. The small Ripley put me in a more upright position, but I prefer the longer reach on an S2 SJ. I ride road bikes so I like leaning a bit more.
Even though I'm no expert, your review between the two is kinda (not really) similar to my experience. I liked the riding position of the SJ than the compactness of the Ripley, but now I have to take a test ride on a size medium to see if it fits me better.
Can you do a review and share your thoughts on a merida one forty any carbon model? I like their design and i would have liked for someone to share their personal thoughts about how it rides.
Good review. Really interested in this bike. If I designed a bike on numbers these would the numbers. I keep waiting for Revel to release a V2 Rascal hoping for similar numbers (I really like the traction CBF offers) but I might have to try out a Stumpy in the meantime. I got some decent ride time on the previous Stumpy and really liked it.
You and me both! I seriously can't wait for a new Rascal... I was asked recently what bike I'm most excited about right now and without hesitation its the Rail 29. I can't wait to give that bike a go... they're impossible to fine too. It looks like a better version of the Ripmo... I really like the CBF suspension.
@@mtbyumyum I ordered a Rail 29 last year and I should have it in a week or two, so excited. I had a V2 Ripmo and loved it. I see the Rail 29 as a very similar bike with a sophisticated CBF suspension platform that can challenge the DW Link in every aspect. I'm going to run a Fox 36 at 160mm instead of the 38, I think it suits the nature of the bike more and it will save half a pound. Looking forward to your thoughts on the Rail 29 once you get on one!

Better isn't the right word. It's different. T429 climbs better, feels more damp, has better traction everywhere and can cover more ground quicker. The Stumpy is more fun. Snappier, more zippy, and faster down hill... we'll talk about this more in the live stream Thursday evening.... it's confusing when I write it down... easier to talk about!

The Yeti will pedal better and have more traction… buddy it weighs more and isn’t as simple. Also a slightly more demanding bike to ride. The stumpy is more easy going. Tough choice. For me it was better in every way... except maybe price.
I know you changed your fork from a 34 to a 36 and liked that.
But you could not get the Shock the way you wanted, too soft or too stiff, traction issues.
Why didn’t you also change the rear Shock with either the Fox X or Rockshox Super Delux Ultimate?
This may make the bike perfect?
So, I weight 210 on the Sworks S5.
Is it worth to change the fork and/or the Shock?
If so go Fox or Rockshox?

Hi, really enjoy your reviews! Just got my buddy to switch to a Ripmo V2s from his 2018 S-Works Stumpjumper. He liked the Ripmo V2s climbing more than the current Stumpjumper EVO. Wanted your thoughts on the Ibis Mojo in 2023. They seem to be on clearance now and was thinking about picking one up for my 19 yr old son who's 5'8". He rode my Ripmo AF large and found it too big. He loves the SB165 that he rents at the bike park, but that's out of my range right now. Appreciate your thoughts.

I really really liked the sj evo! Probably the best fitting bike I've ever been on. Fit me like a glove! That said, the rear end could get a bit chattery in rough section and overall I prefer the ride, climbing and overall feel of the SB140 to that of the SJ evo. With all of that said, If the SJ evo had to me by choice for a longer ish sort of bike, I would be thrilled! I really like it a lot!
At 176cm would you go S3 or S4? Short legs, long body.

They're pretty different. The T429 is a more polite and mild mannered bike. More sophisticated is maybe how to say it. haha The stumpy is more poppy and playful. More similar to the Ripley in terms of fun factor. Although the ripley and stumpy are different as well... haha

Great video. Just bought 2022 SJ in S3 I'm 5'9 and was wondering about going with a little shorter stem to. Do you feel much of a difference compared to the stock stem? Thanks in advance.
Yeah, I always notice stem length and bar width right away... Shorter stem sort of speeds up the steering and can make the bike feel more punchy on the down hills. Longer stem is nice to sort of slow things down just a little and give you a more stretched out feel.... nice on the climbs and traversing varied terrain. There's really no wrong choice or length just what feels best for you and the bike and the type of riding you're wanting to do.
