  • About Sister Anastasia: A member of an Orthodox monastery, she received her MA in Theology from St Vladimir's Seminary. She has long studied ancient praxis and modern addiction in all its varieties, which informs her writing on purification, inner prayer, and the role of the Church in a rapidly changing world. Today she sits down with John to talk about life in the Church and the new world influences all around us.

This “Enlightened” New World utopia isn’t turning out to be all it was cracked up to be. Society is disenchanting, but are the only alternatives hiding out in the hills or burying yourself in books? With an air of levity and a touch of humor, John Heers teaches how to examine the confusing New World by calling upon the mind and wisdom of oft-forgotten Old. Heavy Things, Lightly.

It is an absolutely amazing book. It's basically what Fr. Seraphim Rose's writings were to the baby boomer generation to us millennials.

Her book is one of the most influential I’ve read as a new age convert. I was a practicing psychic before coming to Christ. I identified with so many elements of her journey. Glory to God!

    >Do you go to the farmers’ market?
    >Yes
    >Are you a farmer?
    >No
    >Then you can come to a Christian thing and not be a Christian, and still enjoy it!
    Come and see!

After leaving Mormonism clear back in 2002...looking back, this is one of their most destructive doctrines. They teach that we have a transactional relationship with God. They have a scripture in their scriptures that says "There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated-And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated."
Teaching transactionality with God feels utterly blasphemous to me now. This teaching destroys any understanding of God's love, or of love in our human relationships.

Thank you for this excellent interview. I will definitely read her book. You and others have spoken about this void or "hole" that so many of us feel that lead us to seek spiritual paths for healing and for answers. I wonder if you would ever consider addressing the flip side of that - those others who feel no such void or hole. So many people around me (in an affluent, comfortable, highly educated area of western Canada) are perfectly contented with their lives, are generally kind and generous people, and seem to have no need of God. How can this be? Since union with God is our only hope for truth and life, why can so many seem to happily get by without it? I haven't seen or heard any Orthodox Christians addressing this issue on blogs/podcasts/etc. Thank you.

10:20 this is an excellent question. I had a somewhat similar experience (Buddhism), and have thought a lot about this. More than explicit paganism, the subtlety is so much more dangerous. Many of the truths I learned along the way coincide perfectly with Orthodoxy within the context of Christ and the incarnation, but without Christ at the center you wind up way out in the darkness. God is an abstraction, all spiritual experiences/energies are good and beneficial, and it all falls back into self-deification. The adage is true: the devil is in the details.
