Good spotting the rubber mirror ❤ I actually meet Jeff when I was a kid he was signing autographs in a sport shop got one then qued again when I walked up for another signed photo he said to me oh you've already had one now f off! Good days the 80s ❤
I met Geoff Capes at Dinard airport here in France in 2012, I confessed to him that at junior school I told everyone he was my dad so I didn't get bullied. He laughed and shook my hand which almost wrapped twice around mine, I still have no idea how he got on that tiny aircraft? Nice bloke, and a true giant! 🏆💪🇬🇧
Kwik fit adverts are great as they are the complete opposite of what they say in their adverts, our local independant tyre place is no more expensive and actually know what they are doing. I know when we were there last someone else had brought their car in for tyres and one that Kwik Fit had fitted was the wrong compound for that make, and one of the mechanics did not have any good words to say about them!
They're a franchise so some are maybe better than others. Having said that, I've never heard a good word about the local ones. Replacing parts which don't need it seems to be the main complaint.
I've actually never had a problem with Kwik fit, but to be honest only with minor jobs like replacement tyres. My John was an excellent mechanic and solved most of my problems with his knowledge, UA-cam, and some replacement parts from Halford (other car parts shops are available). Gosh, I do miss him. X
excellent series of vids Steve! i knew an old woman who had virtually all her wall space in 2 rooms filled with shelf after shelf of old VHS tapes going back to the late 70s.. i often wondered about them, not about the programmes they contained, but all those classic old gem adverts that she must have.. will be an absolute goldmine of retro.
I remember the strong man in the first ad - he was on TV a lot at the time. His name was Geoff Capes. Great to see Richard Briers. Love the Metro 'Batman' ad - I remember seeing that at the time.
I think you are wonderful taking the time to put these ads online. Thank you from a very tired girl, and an ill cat, in Bristol. (By the way I remember Bristol Street Motors in Birmingham. They had a car on the top of the roof, and as a child I always wondered how it got there). X
Most of these ads are already out there in the public domain. I just clean them up and curate them into compilations. Thanks for watching. Makes all the work worthwhile. 🙂👍

Such smart looking cars, and I loved alot of front and back seats were one seat like American cars, from Austin's,to Austin Princess, and unlike to day cars which so many look the same, every frame seemed so different, happy days as a kid.
Many of the ads look old but I still think of many of the cars as quite modern. It's hard to imagine that in the 80s this would have been like looking back to cars of the 50s! 😕
My E reg Mini metro City X was the biggest rot box I've ever had the pleasure to own, but it drove lovely, and the kwikfit ads ,how familiar was that tune back in the day
I was a Rover mechanic for a short time when they were in production. Having come from a Vauxhall dealership, I can tell you the Montego and Maestro were an absolute PITA to work on, and to try to get the correct part for. Didn’t mind how they looked, but oh man, working on them sucked. 😆
1984. I had just arrived at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk. I walked to the local garage in Barton Mills and rented their green-gold Viva until I bought a new car. Great time.
Probably down to very poor or no maintenance. If there was one thing A series engines were known for it was easy starting, even in the depths of winter. We pulled one out of a river once after an accident, let the water run out of it and it still started after a few turns.
....these days in the Vauxhall Cavalier advert, he actually would be stuck in the most horrendous traffic jam you can imagine...and it would be hours before he got home. 🤪
Oh, hell yes. One of the things about modern life that really sucks; the massive increase in traffic. We used to play in the street as kids in the 80s. Can you imagine that now!?
@@RetroSteveUK That's our fault, tho'. In the 1970s and '80s becoming a two car family was seen as an aspiration. Now it's a basic necessity, 'coz we all have to drive everywhere for anything at all: sometimes justified in the circumstances. However, cars are now suffering a 100% obesity rate, so many roads and streets are now single track, rather than double carriageway. My town is on a historic car rally route, so we have convoys of MGBs or Moggy Minors driving through now and again, and the exhaust fumes are pretty bad. We grew up in that...as I tell the air cadets I teach at our local ATC Squadron. When I teach them about the RAF in the Cold War I tell them we used to have pop songs about Nuclear War, but that's another retro topic...pop songs. about political and social matters. 🙄
@@jamesbussey2911 Yeah, Prince's 1999 springs to mind. Most people don't realise that's a song about nuclear war. On the car thing .. I had a feeling things were getting bad in the early 90s, when one of our neighbours became a six vehicle family. Mum, dad, two boys and a girl. Each had their own car and one of the boys had a van as well. The little car park in our cul-de-sac that was designed to allow one vehicle per home suddenly became a lot more crowded. Unfortunately parking wasn't designated.
@@RetroSteveUK My parents in-law must be the only people I know who actually use their garage to put their car in. Their double garage is by their 1980s built bungalow, but it's only half full of workshop benches, tools and other junk. They own a Dacia Duster goobermobile, a car designed to confirm the fact that these days, one's choice of car says nothing about one's aspirations or personality.
These days on my motoring budget I'd expect to buy cars like these for under a grand and get as many years out of them as possible before they go to scrap.
I had a MK1 Clio and it had ended up completely rotting underneath. I had applied protective on the floor pans and it still managed to rot and let water into the foot wells lol.
It's a pity most of these cars will by now have rusted away to nothing (certainly in the UK). I actually wouldn't mind a Mk1 Clio 16v or a Punto GT as a little run about. They still look nice now IMO and with over 130hp in both, still very lively too. Probably no so safe as the modern equivalents though!
As David Brown mentioned in the other reply, it's Martin Shaw. The lady on the other end of the phone in the same commercial, I'm certain is Judy Dench.

Love all these old car ads. From a time when cars actually had a bit of character
they did?
Na!, these boomer cars war proper butters.
Mind you, the landcover, fait500, mini, VW Beatle and golf, E class Mercedes was ok.
The rubber mirrors on the polo brilliant

Great vid, can't believe Austin Rover managed to get the Batman licence. And love that old Kwikfit ad, that song will be in my head for days.
The Batmobile was in for it's MOT that day, and Batman and Robin had to nab the Penguin quickly before the Metro rusted away.

Some of those old cars were so cool at the time. Now they look like something Mr Magoo would drive 🚙😂
Some of us are still driving 'em. My eyesight is still good though.
That Montego actually rusted away when it drove through that water.

209 mpg from a C50. I wonder? Thanks for the link; I don't think I've seen any of these before.

The girl in the fiesta ad I’m sure it’s Justine from Grange Hill
Funny how I didn’t want to watch these adverts at the time, yet they bring back memories of good times. How odd is that?
It is a strange dichotomy.
Oh send me back to the 80's STAT!!!!!!!😲
4:35 I still have some colour magic left over.
I brought it with my car cleaning kit when I moved to Canada 20 years ago, and it’s still usable now 🤪
Stuff like that does tend to lurk in garages & sheds.
I remember that Thorn TX9 chassis well, repaired a few of those in my time!
Had one. I believe it was called DUX here in Denmark.
Doyle in the 'wilderness years' doing adverts for Vauxhall. Luckily the Judge John Deed gig came along, or he might be still doing them.
great compilation
I am simply astounded the ‘KwikFit Dance’ never caught on… 😏

Deffo mid 1980s for the majority of those car ads. Jingle for London's Motorfair deffo written & performed by of all people Mike Batt.

Some Peugeot 309s were built in Britain?. Just when you thought a car couldn’t get any more terrible.
"British built" meant something back then. Now we're just a bit sh*t as a nation, in general.
