Dan's videos pretty much always give me the warm and fuzzies. They feel more like a skype call with my mates than like I'm being talked down to by an untouchable, hero-like 'vlogger'. Thanks for the always enjoyable content, Dan (27K seems like a lot to me, and I still think you're worthy of more).

These type of videos are always a breathe of fresh air. No exaggerated personalities or patronizing the audience etc. Just two friends sitting down having a normal discussion & letting us listen in on it. Really enjoyed it so please don't rule out making more. Oh, and feel free to keep this angle too!

The next house should be called 'Full House'. And no it is not merely a nineties television reference. With Daniel as an actor, Jack as a writer, and Ciaran as a cameraman (among other things), a wide range of film-making roles are represented in the house, a rather full range, if you will. Moreover, as it is likely that UA-camy friends will visit said house, this range will be extended when the house is full of people. As an extension of Daniel finding his voice within these twenty-six weeks, the new house represents a time of fulfillment for him. And after all, the fulfillment of needs is surely the most important role a house and a home plays in someone's life. Finally, the term 'full house' connotes completion, a goal which many strive for in their lives. It could represent Daniel's aim to complete the year with a video every week, or Jack's aim to complete his next short film, or sketch. But of course it would be beneficial to keep these aims in mind with the name of the house. Thank you for your consideration.

    Idea for the house name:
Throw a party in the new house and if someone at the party has a problem, name it after the problem.
For example, if Carrie tripped and fell on the floor, name the house 'Fletcher's Trip' or 'Fletcher's Tumble'

    • @themumblingdumpling2838

Dylan Fox Thta's a really cool idea!
But honestly, now that I've heard of "Fletcher's Tumble", I don't think I could like anything more than that. And it kinda makes me wish that Carrie will actually come over and trip, which is horrible.
And now I'm conflicted. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE

i *am* thirteen and i watch both jack and dan's videos. this is going to sound really "I AM 12 BUT I AM DIFFERENT AND MATURE" but i honestly don't think that everyone should be seen based on their age? when you look at your core demographic, even if it's around 14-15, that's not necessarily a bad thing. not all fourteen year olds are going to be into zoe & alfie's kind of videos - many of them will watch these types of videos, and understand and engage with them too. hm. idk. also the house should be called 'neptune house' because it's completely irrelevant and then people will ask you why the house is called 'neptune house' and you'll have to explain that some thirteen year old kid in a youtube comment named it that just because it was absolutely ridiculous and also made them think of spongebob.

I think that, as people that watch UA-cam and are subscribed to the larger channels like Zoe, Alfie, Joe etc, we are thought of by the media and by certain people as screaming fangirls that go to every convention, book signing, meet up etc when in reality most of us just sit down at the end of each day to watch videos of people doing what they love to do - and I think that is one of the reasons that many people don't understand the power of UA-cam.
Yes, I'm only 16, but I'm about to start college and to really begin my life and hearing you and Jack talk about your viewers as beings with intellectual opinions is beautiful. My favourite videos are the ones when you talk, really talk. Not about, as you said, shipping and ridiculous questions in Q&A's (which, don't get me wrong, I also enjoy watching like lots of other styles of video) but about life, work, growing up etc. The real things.
UA-cam had an extremely huge audience of people of all ages and I think sometimes people forget that and only cater to those 12- 15 (if you know what I mean) Like everyone has said, this feels like a cosy night in, or on skype, with friends and makes me extremely respectful to both of you xxx I find myself excited on multiple occasions to watch videos from both of you, Carrie and Hazel (whose tipsy talks I found you both on) ☺

  • @skydreamerlily

I really love this video and the level of maturity and honesty in it.
I've just turned 20 and I watched a lot of Dan and Phil from about 16, I still do watch some stuff, but the level of content and the audience it's aimed at, I find it hard to watch them now.
I think creators like PJ, Dodie, you, Jack, Hazel, the level of content has matured and grown, and I love that. I think, yeah, some youtubers definitely have stayed at one level, such as channels who consistently upload challenge videos or whatever, and it's great that there are those channels as some people like them, but I think some channels can forget that their audience's grow up?
I've stopped watching a lot of youtubers because I want a level of maturity that a lot of channels aren't showing. It's not to say I don't like people messing around or whatever, I'm not a killjoy, I adore baking with layton and tipsy talk is brilliant, but there is a line where I want to feel like I am watching something appropriately relatable and interesting to watch rather than something "relatable" like a challenge video or "lets answer this quiz about myself with the most obvious answers and outcome possible".
I don't really comment on stuff as comments are often refuted but I wanted to say something because it really resonated with me, thank you for good content

One of the things I love about your videos Dan is that you always seem like an actual person. Which I'll admit is a rather vague way of attempting to give a compliment but I'll explain. Most of the youtubers I see that have many subscribers or views, just seem...not fake but they just seem very digital and have no personality or character to them that is actually their own and not put on for show. Whenever I watch one of your videos, it seems that I'm just catching up with an old friend and that we're on skype or something like that. It feels real. And I love how both you and Jack are quite open online to your audiences and don't just treat us as fangirls or dumb teenagers. Although I'm 16, I feel more mature purely because you don't talk down to your audiences. You talk to them as if they are your own age which just makes me feel like I can have a discussion or intelligence conversation with you. It's really great. Lately I've just turned to youtubers who I feel like are actually genuine (yourself, Jack, Dodie, Carrie as well as many more) and I just get more enjoyment out of those peoples videos than I do out of big name youtubers (not to try and knock them or say they don't work hard, but you get what I mean) Big fan of your videos and congrats on 26 weeks!
    P.S. Nice thighs Jack :D

Call the new home Neverland. The main protagonists Peter and Wendy can represent aspects of all your personalities; Peter symbolising childlike excitement, carefree, fun etc. Wendy symbolising responsibility, adult life, the future and ambition. Hook/Pirates Cove can represent everyday trials and tribulations (even if that's getting up in the morning). Mermaid's Lagoon is quite a dark, twisted location in Neverland, so that could represent the weird shit that goes on in the house, or your imaginations. Pixie Hollow could symbolise the purity and hope in new ideas. DO IT. NAME IT NEVERLAND. LOOK HOW MUCH THOUGHT I PUT IN.

I agree with you completely on the Q&A situation, its much more entertaining when somebody makes a video on something they feel strongly about, or even just enjoy creating (like tipsy talk or drunk advice) rather than somebody sitting in front of a camera and answering questions about their favourite book from audible, or their nature box recommendation, that they do every month. As a viewer I find the more thought out and "right this is the point I want to make" videos much more enjoyable than something, like a Q&A or a crappy tag about what's in their bag (which has become more recent to actually be sponsors 99% of the time so the people actually don't carry that stuff in their bag), its better content that way and people like that deserve more recognition.
Congrats on half a year by the way

  • @laurenlake3564
    @laurenlake3564 9 років тому +5

I completely agree. I would much rather watch an interesting and thought provoking video like this, which opens up discussions, or something I'm actually going to learn and grow from, compared to a weekly Q&A. Watching someone talk about something they're passionate about, or sharing something they are proud of is far more genuine and just a better use of the UA-cam space.
I personally enjoy learning from UA-cam, and being introduced to communities that share my values. The quality of the content is far more important than the quality of the brand new camera used to show old chewing gum packets in someone's handbag...
This is why I often prefer "small" you tubers. Because they create they're content because they love and care about what the do, not because they feel obligated to upload at that specific time.
I think that made sense and got my point across - Congrats on 26 weeks!

Ok, I have a thought and want to share it to see if anyone else shares this thought. Zoe, Alfie, Tanya, Jim and all the bigger you tubers (apart from sprinkle of glitter who I believe is in the middle) are for a younger audience for preteens and early teenagers. You tubers like Dan, Jack, hazel, Dan and Phil, Carrie, mainly smaller you tubers are for the older teen audience because I find myself sometimes belittled by Zoe's content whereas with dans or hazels channel, i feel like I am on the same level as them and I connect with them more.
Additional note: I don't have time to name all the you tubers but I hope you get the gist. I am also not hating on other peoples content just a passing thought

    • @Berrie909
      @Berrie909 8 років тому +7

+Megan Carter +Megan Carter I agree, but to an extent. (Also, ik this was 3 months ago but imma comment anyway) A lot of the UA-camrs such as Zoe, Alfie, Tanya, Jim, Marcus etc. do indeed cater towards younger audiences, simply because when they started out those were the people attracted to them. I admit, a few years ago when I was say 11 or 12 I watched the majority of the people listed above and found it mildly entertaining. Now I can barely struggle to get through any one of them.
The thing with UA-cam is that people get older with it, the audience gets older, but the creators, or those like Zoe, Alfie, etc. have found their niche and stuck with it. Put simply, the people who were 12 years old when UA-cam was first becoming a thing are now over them, but more people are joining youtube all the time, and so the channels put out similar style content and attracting the same type of audience, 11-12-year-olds, they're just different 11-12-year-olds.
That's the why the future of youtube is so rocky, because theoretically people are always going to be going through their preteen phases and like stuff that appeals to them, however how this translates to 'the real world' may differ, and put in how commercialised the platform has become the actual future of youtube is impossible to predict as now there are variables such as sponsorship contacts, management teams and google themselves.
I feel like one of the points of this video raised by Jack that his audience has grown with him, and instead of early teenagers we're late-teens-early-20's was a very important one, and will be for many UA-camrs. No offense meant, but you can tell (people like) Zoe etc. don't give a flying fuck about the specifics of who is watching their videos because so many do, and it's hard to focus on individuals. Not saying 'smaller' UA-camrs care about individuals either, but it's easier to recognise that your audience as a whole is growing when it's a tenth or even a hundredth of the size of the bigger channels.
Jack, Hazel, Carrie, Dodie, Hannah (Witton), Lucy, Bertie, etc. (you know the ones I mean) produce content that is usually viewed as more 'mature' than challenge videos, tutorials, hauls etc. and even the scripted short episode type things (such as those made by Bertie, which sometimes feature people like Dodie or Jack) touch on subjects Zoe and her group wouldn't go near on their main channels. Even this one, talking about the youtube system itself would not be done by many other 'bigger channels.'
I have to say, I'm fairly sure I've lost my point in here somewhere, but to put it shortly, it was a very good point Jack made about his audience growing with him and becoming more mature and more intelligent, and I like the point you made about many of the bigger channels catering towards the younger demographic. I simply love this video and videos like this talking about the system itself, and when UA-camrs acknowledge that their audience is a network of intelligent beings rather than some nondescript beast to be afraid of that needs to be placated by regular, similar, slightly trivial content.
This was a lot longer than I wanted it to be and I'm still not sure I've made it clear what my point is. Hmm.

This is why I absolutely adore your videos. Along side Tomska, Hazel, and Jack you are one of my favorite youtubers because you make me laugh, but also have the capability of having actual intelligent conversation with the audience or guest. To me most main stream youtubers' content doesn't really show that. I don't know if I worded this in the best way (I'm not the best with accurately expressing what I'm thinking) but I think you understand.

They really cheer me up if (as im sure you know working in retail) a customer has been incredibly shitty. I think you resonate a kind of purity in your vids and its so clear that you enjoy making them. So much of UA-cam is becoming commercially accessible (obviously nessesary) so something as fresh and simple as yours brings joy. Would love to see this kind of video with other guests. Not even youtubers just mates of yours that can discuss things well and fluidly. Though would love to see a chat with Mike and/or Jacob. The thing I enjoy most about you, Dan, is that there's no bullshit. You don't conform stereotypical youtuber videos or styles, you create what you want and you put it out there. It's so refreshing after endless Q&As and tutorials and gaming videos. I would always much rather watch a video of a person sitting down with a cup of tea (or something else) and just chatting, than listen to someone prattle on about what their favourite scented candle is. Hey Dan!
I really dig your style of vlogging. If I could combine your content with the technical presentation (graphics, and other general aesthetic etc.) that meowitslucy produces, I would be a very happy camper.
I like that you don't dumb yourself down and you articulate yourself in a way that could be perceived at times as being borderline pretentious. It frustrates me when people who are clearly well educated intentionally restrict their vocabulary in order to appeal to the largest audience possible. So thank you Dan, for providing me with often light-hearted content that can still engage me on an intellectual level.
I'm in the same boat as Jack is as far as looking forward to your new videos every week; even though you clearly have a "Hey! I'm talking to a camera so am going to project my voice and enunciate a little more than I normally do!" vibe going on, I understand that you're still being authentic to who you are as a person - which is something I really appreciate. Someone else said it quite well, it does totally feel like I'm just in a Skype call with a mate and he's telling me a story.
If you don't mind me offering one piece of constructive criticism, I'd like to suggest you look at the music you use under your end slate. It feels like it doesn't fit in all the time with your channel. It totally works with some of your comedic story videos where you have a punchline at the end that's cheeky (often I'll be laughing as the music starts so the positive energy I already feel is amplified by the music); but with other videos (like this one, plus some of your Baking with Layton series) it can feel really jarring, like I'm meant to be happier or something, it's hard to describe. Just something I thought might be helpful to call to your attention, I know that as an artist it's easy to sometimes overlook small details (which I should add is exactly what this is - a very minor problem for me).
Thanks for this video dude, it was cool to see you and Jack have a chat about life as a creative person who is heavily involved with UA-cam. Look forward to next weeks video.

I enjoy watching every video you upload and I'm glad you've found something you really enjoy filming, because you should never make videos, that you don't enjoy doing :) all the best to you Dan, and I'll go back to the shadows :)

I will be the first to admit that 26 weeks ago I had no clue who you were, Dan. But now here we are... I enjoy the content that you produce. I think that you've truly found a voice and an audience on youtube. And I love the fact that your channel and other social media are always a conversation and not like yelling at someone through a piece of one-way glass.

I agree with Jack, I think that you have found your voice and you're making amazing videos now. I really enjoy all of them, but this one is defiantly my favourite so far. It was so warm and honest, it made me feel like I was in the room with you two. I even had to pause it for a bit to collect my own thoughts. Very, very lovely!

I haven't been watching your vlogs, I haven't been watching youtube videos, actually, for a long time, but I decided to have a lazy day with some of my old favourites today. I searched Jack Howard and this was the first video. I clicked on it and was thoroughly pleased with my choice. I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed watching your random but valuable conversation about what you and so many people do and what the public assumes about youtubers. It was just like a conversation I would get into with my brothers or my family or my best friends late at night when everybody wants to go to bed, but the conversation is just too interesting to leave.
Always love listening to and watching your group of youtubers as I feel you have the most valuable things to contribute to my life and ears, you all have a down to earth perspective on life, as well as being funny while presenting it. I appreciate the respect you have for your viewers and, although I am not the youtube video making type, I always wished I was so that I could meet people like you and be a part of your much needed discussions about stuff.
Glad I decided to watch youtube videos today, thank you! xx

I really like videos like this because it seems more personal. It's always interesting to see what UA-camrs think about the UA-cam world, and being open and honest about how the views equate to money but how not everyone on UA-cam can use it as their full time job. There's something valuable about real conversations like this, and it also just reminds me of sitting around having conversations with my friends.

I really do love the perfect mixture of seriousness, silly and thoughtful that goes into each of your videos and the discussion that they can potentially open up.

I started watching you early this year, after seeing you on various other UA-cam channels. I think its was Tom's 'Valentine's Lies' that finally got me to check out your channel. I wasn't sure about you initially, but I've really grown to love your videos and I now look forward to them each week. I agree with Jack, you've definitely found your voice and its one that I enjoy hearing and find interesting. Your 'Baking with Layton' series is one of the best things on UA-cam :)

When I first subscribed to this channel, it was because it had more footage of ciaran then any other channel. But then I started to like you, and I realized that the humour in your videos is basically a combination of TomSka, Jack Howard, Ben Cook, Ciaran and you. And I started to understand that your humour is the kind of humour I like, the kind of humour that Tom, Jack, Ben and Ciaran all have. The kind of humour that has been used in the best Spider-Man comics. Just think about it, the jokes, the puns, the wittiness of Spider-Man that we all love. And then watch a random video of you. Then go and watch Jack & Dean's GFC. It's the same humour. And that humour is the reason that I now have a new favourite UA-camr. That's right, it's Jack Howard.

  • @LivviLikes

Daniel, I feel like you are swiftly becoming my favourite UA-camr, and I really look forward to your videos every week, whether it's something like this, or a Baking With Layton, because I know every time I'm getting something of quality. You've put effort into all 26 videos, and they get better each time. Jack is right - you really have found your voice.
You have a proper connection with your audience and you never underestimate us, which I think is a quality some viewers have devalued as they watch more and more videos: they just want an easy laugh, a three minute video, and to see their favourite face, not caring whether the video has been made with them or views or possible viral-ness in mind.
I didn't get to meet you at SiTC last year, and it was the biggest disappointment of the event, even though I didn't meet Jack, Dan, Phil, Louise and a number of other vloggers I like. It was more of a disappointment not to have met you because I knew you'd engage with me, rather than the quick 'hello', and a photo that you get with a lot of other YTers.
Consideration of an audience is the most important thing a UA-camr can do nowadays, and you do it constantly. Keep up the good work; you're fabulous!
    P.S
I vote for the Big Brother House, as I feel all of your videos are a constant peek into your lives... (I mean this in the nicest, most non-creepy way possible...)

I always look forward to watching your videos Dan. There are so many people I'm subscribed to whose videos I skip over because it's something they've done, or I've seen, a bunch of times. I'm not always interested in watching someone play with a dog and get groceries for 20 minutes, 3 times a week. I just can't always be bothered. I get that it can be hard to come up with new content every week, especially if you've been doing it for a long time, but I like that you put thought and effort into your videos, and Baking with Layton is one of my favourite things because it's genuinely entertaining! Good luck with the move and new house! :)

What I love about your vlogging style is that it kinda reminds me of old school UA-cam. Dude with a camera talking about stuff. And I love that. Call the new house space because space is non definable. It's your space, you can live in it, film in it, eat in it, kill people in it, talk in it, rehearse in it, do whatever you want in it, Space is adaptable like life, and like UA-cam videos. You can adapt your videos to the people you are, and you can adapt your space to the people you are. And also, you can say I went to space.

I subscribed to you sometime last year I think and it's been lovely to watch your videos. I fell out of the habit of watching ALL the videos in my sub box (thank goodness) and instead just watch the occasional video when it seems interesting. But with your videos, I look forward to seeing what you're going to be talking about next. You are one out of a handful of you tubers that I regularly watch. In the same way you're amazed with how you've made 26 videos, I'm amazed that I've watched all 26 videos of yours (some more than once) without missing one. Nearly all of your videos from this year have been engaging. When I watch your videos it's not just background noise, I really do watch them unlike when I'm watching "big" youtubers do the same tags or Q&As and stuff. Good work.
Also might I add that I love your shorts Dan.

Coming up from being a 12 year old many moons ago, watching who are now the "mainstream" to watching this "group" of youtubers now in a totally different demographic is so interesting, because I go back to the youtubers I used to really enjoy and I feel a little mind numbed, whereas with these guys (and girls) I feel like I'm genuinely a part of the conversation.

I definitely do the 'haha funny vid' comment sometimes, mostly because I want the person to know that I did enjoy it as an actual person; I do this especially with smaller UA-camrs where I know from experience that comments are a real highlight (and in cases like yourself I forget that you've gained more than since I started watching :P). I have also left comments like that when I almost had too much to say, and that fear of saying something wrong sets in so I've deleted it all, or it feels like I'm over-doing it because I don't tend to see many lengthy comments.
But saying that, I enjoyed this a lot; felt like a honest discussion and was very interesting to hear both of your thoughts.

    I propose Triple Threat House.
Not only because it's the third house in the trilogy (and by the law of film, will more than likely be slightly disappointing after the highs of Lovely 'Ouse) but because yours, Jack's and Ciaran's work composes such an astute quality and range that it targets most people to create a trifecta of power than can't be matched....
    Either that or 'Shag Palace'
