I would argue that it was not Escobar’s own goal that caused Colombia to lose that match. Escobar’s own goal came in the 35th minute, and was the first goal of the match. The USA later scored another goal, then in the 90th minute, Colombia finally scored one, thus canceling out Escobar’s own goal. The goal by Earnie Stewart in the 52nd minute was the goal that ultimately defeated Colombia 2-1. If Stewart’s goal came first, and then Escobar’s own goal came second, then yes, one can say that it was Escobar who gave the USA the winning goal. If the match had ended 1-1, then one can argue that Escobar’s own goal caused a tie, but Colombia did score a goal, and since Escobar’s own goal came first, and Stewart’s came second, Escobar can’t be held responsible for Colombia’s defeat.

john harkes is my god father and he was the player that played the ball in which escobar ended up scoring the own goal, i know it affected him too. he said something along the lines of no one should be killed because of the result of a football match. absolutely shocking. hopefully times have changed and this will never happen again
