A few years ago, I worked with a retired professional basketball player. He thought he was 6'5", but he was about 3 or 4 inches shorter than me, and I'm about 6'4" 1/2, maybe 6'5" if I really try hard to stand with good posture. The guy didn't try to argue with me or anything when I told him how tall I was, he just genuinely didn't seem to know how tall he was. I guess he just came from a culture where everybody exaggerates their heights. Given that height is an advantage, you'd think more guys would take pride in their ACTUAL height. If you can play pro at only 6'1", you've got some SERIOUS skill.

That's why pictures of Wilt (listed 7'1" barefoot) with Shaq (listed 7'1" w/shoes) show that Wilt is a couple inches taller. Same for many other players.

He might know his specific age but you can approximate. I can remember going to Ms. Goldie and Ms. Pearlie May class pre Kindergarten 1964. I had to be 4 or 5 to go. 1964 is 59 years ago since so I can approximate I am 63 -64 if I didn't know.
My high school had a really good team and they inflated the heights so much lmao. Was friends with one of the point guards, dude was MAYBE 5’7” with shoes on and they had him listed at 5’10”. I think heights are so often wrong because it's an ego metric for people. The functional metrics like standing reach and wingspan get no love but are more important. It's why people like Dennis Rodman were so effective. He may have only been 6'7 but his length and athleticism made him effectively a 6'10 - 6'11 guy. The top of your head can't block shots.......unless you're Tako Fall.

First off, former policy wasn't lying in most cases it was just a different standard. Height in shoes. So let's clear that up.
POLICY IS BOGUS & HERES WHY:
1. No NBA rep on site for measurements so teams/players will essentially still report what they want to. They can say so and so is half inch shorter and round back up.
2. Lifts in socks. They said sock measurements so even if measured some players will add lifts that add an inch or more and it has been done at combine. U cant see em either. Most players like their shoe heights as former player said on the jump. He said Durant is avout the only one who dont.
3. If some teams measure in morning and others at night or after work morning measurements will yield half inch to over an inch on average vs teams who measure later in day.
4. They are still using full inch listings. No quarters or halfs. This leaves room to manipulate and adjust as well.
SOLUTION: List player height in paranthesis and playing height (shoes) beside it. This will make fans and players happy. Shoe listings have been standard for over 30 years.
All that said, this is all going to be a joke. And the nba saying its about betting is an insult to our intelligence. People bet on performance and outcomes not height.
I don't think the players are lying. They want the fans to believe that the players are taller than they actually are. It's for a better product to sell to fans.As you stated the sneakers give 1.5 or 2 inches of added height. KP being 7'3 is better than him being 7'1, KD being 7'0 is better than him being 6'10. Hakeem Olajuwon was listed at 7'0 but he is really 6'10, Alonzo Mourning was really 6'8 but listed at 6'10, Patrick Ewing was about 6'11 but listed at 7'0. This goes with them promoting the evolution of the game and how these seven foot giants can do so much with the ball. Hearing KP is 7'3 and watching him crossover and run the floor is a better sell than saying he's 7'1. When people hear 7'3 they think of a freak of nature. But great video

He admitted it he said it’s because he wanted to be considered as a guard/forward type player. A SF. Didn’t want teams to label him as a center or anything, or PF. I know it’s silly, but you know how in the basketball world the 1-3 positions are the “coolest”? Especially before the current era. Like before KD and others made it normal for bigs to have skill, of you weren’t a guard or SF you were expected to just be a banger down low and not have a lot of handle or range or passing ability. It should only matter what a player does and not what he looks like, but stereotypes played such a big role in what teams allowed a player to do. If they hadn’t seen it before, they werenr comfortable. Of course once you get on the team and on the court, that’s when all that matters is how you play, but all of these lies about size are for draft purposes. Even tho it was rare when KD was in the draft, the league had seen guys like magic Johnson and Grant hill, lebron, Penny, and a few others 6’6-6’9 who were basically point guard skilled big guys. But a 7’0” dude who teams would have actuallt believed was going to be successful playing that type of game in the NbA? NOPE! So say teams were considering KD at the top of the draft, but were obsessed with stereotypes and player comparisons, and they say the way Kd played in college and how he reallt displayed no ability to bang down low and was super skinny and appeared fragile, and then saw he was listed at 7’0”, they would have been like “ok well obviously he isn’t going to be able to do what he did in college against pros at 7 feet, and ovivously he doesn’t have the skills to bang in the post...maybe we shouldn’t risk taking him at #2,3,4,5 in the draft...”

Interesting to see NBA players claimed heights! Over the years I noticed that Magic was 6'8" in college and became 6'9" in the NBA. The I saw that both Magic and Bird were listed as 6'9". If you look at the two greats standing beside one another, Bird is clearly taller. I don't understand why a player or a team would even want to mis-state players' height. I am not loosing any sleep over it.
Kevin Durant is possibly the best player in the NBA. He has an incredible Jump Shot, and when he elevates to shoot his “J” is almost impossible to block! His ball handling skills are also top notch for a player with his height. Foot work is very important, and it’s basically never mentioned in professional basketball. He has very efficient footwork which is a problem with most Big Men. Durant is solid in all aspects of the game, and if you consider the fact that he improves on his game every year, the thought of how much better he will be with more time and experience can be a scary thought! If he had a work effort like Kobe, he then would be added to the “G.O.A.T.” debate!!

My senior year in HS 8 of our top 11 players were between 6'1" and 6'3". The media ALWAYS talked about how we had no height. In our State semi's we beat a team with a front line of 6'8", 6'4" and 6'3"... but their guards were 5' 10" and 5'8". Afterwards, their coach remarked, 'you hear about how they're not big, but if you don't have a solid big man you'll have trouble with these guys.' In the finals we beat a team with a front line, 6'9", 6'6", 6'5"...their guards were 5'8" and 5'11". Neither game was close.
If you have 5 guys on the floor that can all defend, run, jump, handle, shoot, pass... and are willing to play as one, you'll see how basketball was meant to be played. We led our class, (biggest schools) in scoring and no one player avged more than 15. 4 in double figures and the bench avged 16. Balance was our strength, on any given night anyone of our top 9 could be the leading scorer.
BTW, we won back to back State titles. I won't name drop but we both had, and played against, some great players.

When ppl talk about them I always hear random heights. Whatever helps their argument & point they're trying to make.
Colleges do this too for scouting reports im 6 2 and three quaters without shoes and 205 lbs. I was listed as 6 4 220 in college lol
What is the lol for? Most listings at all levels are shoe heights. They used your shoe height as most schools do and have for decadez
The point is they intentionally list people taller and bigger on purpose and shoes only add an inch and add no weight whatsoever.
