Beginning Percussion Techniques for Back-to-School: Setting up Practice Pads from the PAS Classroom

It’s back-to-school time: What better time to focus on the best tips for beginning percussionists? PAS Classroom is here to help with a six-part #BTS video series for all of our music educator friends. Let’s start with the first thing every percussionist needs to know: how to set up a practice pad. You’ll learn how to walk your percussion students through this process, including where to place the legs of the stand, how to keep adjustment knobs within reach, and how to ensure the rubber feet of the practice stand are out of the playing zone.
PAS Classroom is a video series focused on quick and valuable tips and tricks for percussionists, drummers, music students, and (in particular) music educators. Dr. Michael Crawford is a member of the PAS Education committee and a musician, educator, and adjudicator based in Texas. He serves as Lecturer of Music Education & Percussion at the University of North Texas. He has performed throughout the U.S. and Europe, is a frequent presenter, and his scholarly work has been published in the Journal of Music Teacher Education and The Instrumentalist.
