Hi Pete,
I had luck with 1:1 ration of borax to sugar and add water until you reach a pasty consistency.
You can also use a more liquid consistency of this mixture to soak bread or tortilla (some kind of absorbing food ) and leave sitting in the liquid)
Set aside to prep its container.
Poke entry holes at the base of a plastic container (re-purposed salsa, cottage cheese or sour cream container?). Hole diameter should be size of a large nail, big enough for pull bugs to enter and an inch from the bottom so these entry holes don’t act as drain holes.
Leave this sugar/borax mixture in the garden bed and guaranteed it’ll be full of slugs and any pill bugs and any that eat the mix (and they will) should carry it back with them to the colony and kill it over a few days/week. You’ll notice a considerable decrease of activity the next day and it should stop comepletely in a few days/week. You may need to replace the container with “fresh” solution as needed until the problem is gone! Good luck!
We had that problem with some of our raised beds a while back too. Keep in mind that using the DE is a mechanical process rather than a chemical process. It takes time to work. What we did for the Rollie pollies was to let the beds dry out completely. Then we liberally applied the DE and raked it into the first couple inches of the soil. This will get it into the layer where the bugs burrow into. We also made circles of DE on the surface like you did and placed some sacrificial leaves into the circles as bait. This made the bugs cross the DE and get more of it into their joints. Then wait at least a week before planting again. We continued to work more DE into the soil every month or so when it was dry for continued control. For the ants, we used corn meal like you did. But once again, it took about a week before we saw positive results.
Something interesting about the Rollie pollies: When you see those, it’s usually a sign of heavy metals in the soil. They are actually good for cleaning that up! But bad for gardeners!
Thanks! This was very helpful, too. I was thinking that the DE should be mixed into the soil, and I was wondering about a waiting period before replanting also. I guess we wouldn't have the same video, though, if he had done that.
Good info TY, but I'm thinking that the "Pill bugs are ridding the ground of heavy metals" info going around is based in misunderstanding & confusion. Due to the fact that most fertilizers are essentially assorted minerals/metals & they certainly have no issues eating those fertilized plants right up lol... I'd venture to say that our Pill bug problems originate with moisture & the metals we fertilize our plants with are what they're actually eating them for. Am I the only one that has come to this conclusion?
Pete B. to the rolly-polly bugs: "This is war!" 🤣 I'm sorry about what's happening, Pete, but thank you so much for sharing this! I never knew rolly-polly bugs ate plants, now I do. It was also helpful to see what worked and what doesn't. Keep up the good fight, my friend. 💪🏼👊🏼💥
This is happening to my plants right now. and I'm going through video after video tryna find someone who's going through the same thing and I found you THANK YOU SO MUCH for all the tips I am taking notes and just subscribe ☺️🙏🙌
Glad the video helped you out.
That is incredible! I always thought roly polys where just fun bugs. Now I realize they are savages! Good luck, Pete. I'm look forward to see how the diatomaceous earth works on them.
Me too!
Just found a rolly in my tray of cabbage seedlings just coming up
I don't know Pete, I finally resorted to using "Seven" in my greenhouse (both liquid and powder) over the summer after having Aphids devastate my Peas, potatoes and zucchini. I had tried using Dawn liquid soap and water, Neam oil, diatomaceous earth, and various other home remedies with little to no results. Yes, it's a chemical made specifically for killing bugs on vegetable plants, but it did have better results. I didn't want to spray my plants, but I looked at the downside of not having anything to eat and relented. Rather Ironic that I won't put chemicals in my body through a needle (you know what I mean), but need to put them on my plants if I want anything to eat :-). Keep up the great videos brother. Cheers
I always had the same problem. I learned to cut the bottom out of a solo cup and press the top over the plant pressing it in the ground. Leave it on until the plants get established and stems are strong. I also sprinkled a little epson salt around each plant .It works for me.
Thanks for videos!
Cover them up with plastic bottles or cloches, just to get them established. They work.
Normally snails has been eating mine.
I really don't know how you popped up but your thumbnail almost floored me!!!! This is my 2nd year starting seedling in my garage(6a Ct). last year no problem with anything except aphids. This winter started my seed trays, (spinach, lettuce, onions etc). They started growing, no problem. I check the next morning. GONE! I thought field mice, the grandkids having fun....! Replanted. Grew. GONE. Put a mouse trap next to the tray. Trapped Nothing. WTH!!! Now I know. I must have brought them in when I put a lemon tree, citronella plant, Herbs from the deck in my garage to overwinter! AND. They are near my seedlings set up! Thank you, thank you so much for this video! I was going nuts! I will do more research and investigating, but I'm desperate to start now! You have just landed a new sub! Take care!
Thank you for subscribing, go out there at night or dark in your garage and you should see them munching on your seedlings. I thought about keeping a light on them all the time so the roly polies won't come out.
I had same issues last year with pill bugs. I used diatomaceous earth and everything else that was organic and nothing worked. I finally used one dose of liquid 7 and no more problems. For fire ants I use Advion Ant bait. I don’t like using liquid 7 but I don’t like replanting my garden several times and having a possibility of a totally garden failure for that season.
Such a timely video - thank you! I have a group of these little "friends" attacking my seedlings and will definitely be trying your cornmeal/DE method. Wish me luck!
I use grow tubes (cut from soda bottles) then I only water inside the grow tubes.
"again very sad" That's hilarious.
😂😂😂 ☠️☠️☠️ "again....SO SAD". lol had me crackin up too.
Hi Pete cut the bottom of a plastic water bottle off and push it in the ground around the plant and when the plant is large enough pull the bottle out.
I’m in East Texas, too, Pete. And all my fall brassica plants have also been eaten. Raised beds too. Little green worms - cabbage worms. 😡
You need bascilus thuringiensis
We have so many of those.
Hi Pete I was just looking for info on how to get rid of those dang bugs and just found you and glad I did my garden beds are full of them and they have destroyed my beans and cucumber plants, thank you so much, I thought about the DE but was afraid it would kill the earth worms but I guess I'll have to risk it anyway can't afford to put my cornmeal on there I'm from the mountains of NC and love my cornbread
Wowzers, who knew!! Thanks or the info, will be on the lookout for sure.
Blessings
I love this channel. Thanks for all the videos!!!!
We are tired of Wisconsin. Brutal winters and This state is WAAAAAYYYYY too Blue and getting more Blue. We are moving to Rural East Texas this year. We are looking for information on local homestead groups or preparedness communities or gatherings. Does anyone have any information on where we may be able to find these groups? We are very conservative Christians looking to live in peace and freedom, with the intention of being as independent from the system as is humanly possible. Thank you for all your efforts!
Awesome thank you 👍 Just do a search online for East Texas homesteading groups and you'll find a few that might help you out. If you have any questions about homesteading down here, just ask and I'll try to point you in the right direction.
The beer traps I set were full every morning and that wasn't even putting a dent in their numbers...Sluggo Plus is the only thing that really helped. Even the DE only worked temporarily. I also had the DE harden up and smother my roots a bit...be careful with that stuff. Hope you beat those damn isopods.
I had the same issues. All the organic stuff failed. Finally tapped out and did a single dose of permethrin and that took care of them. I waited a week to replant. They completely ate 5 beds worth of seedlings (4’x8’) twice before I gave up
They eat the cornmeal and end up dying which is so sad.....hilarious Pete. Good luck I hope you can come up with some sort of resolution.
I thought Pete B was hilarious talking about that.
😂👍
Sluggo plus,,,it works, it's organic.
Wow, I hope you get rid of those things. Thanks for sharing. Stay encouraged and keep trying my brother
So sorry you are having this problem. I had the same thing last year and just keep using the DE. Once the DE dries from being wet it is still good. It took about two weeks to not see any pill bugs in my soil. I covered everything in my beds. All the dirt and the plants.
WOW! I to had a problem with them last year and until then l never knew they would have been a problem. Thanks for all the info.
Great video. Sorry about your plants. It's hard to beat something when it's in its natural environment.
nice greenhouse
Yeah these bugs will chop down a seedling at night & then eat it. They attacked the plants in one of my raised garden beds a couple of years ago.
Never thought rolly Polly would be something to worry about.
My garden was overran with rolly pollies also known as the pill bug I put boiling water around the side of my planter then I put diatomaceous earth down all over the soil waited 3 days replanted my seedlings and now they're doing great. This is the first year I've had a problem with them but it does take a few days for DE to work.
one other thing to try pete, sow seed directly into that bed. those creepy crawlers are designed to take out stressed plants. try removing the transplanting step.
This is exactly what I had to do last year. Every transplant got mowed down immediately. Every direct sow did just fine.
@@bigwooly8014 thank you for sharing your experience. i guess some plants will transplant better than others. but if the transplants go thru a period of shock, that may attract the critters to come take them out. at least they make worm castings/fertilizer of the stressed plants.
I tried seeds twice. None of my Cilantro seedlings came up above the soil or were decimated as soon as they did. I did not know the cause at that time. Then I planted about 30 green bean seeds and almost all of them sprouted and came up above the ground level then every day one or more were devoured. After 3 weeks, I now have 6 of those plants survived and they are strong enough to grow. So, I am not sure the seedlings vs seed theory has a broad validity.
@@kishoreandjulie7944 you may have encountered a bad set of seeds. if we look to nature as a guide, there is no transplanting taking place in nature. seeds fall , take root, and grow. also, this inconsistent weather is not helping. maybe we all can request the powers that should be to stop geo-engineering and cloud seeding which is affecting the weather.
@@kishoreandjulie7944 exactly what I said I planted bean seeds and they killed everyone of them and cucumber seeds just disappeared so I have replanted them
I'm sorry this happened to you but wow...what an interesting (and useful) video.
i'm tyring everything so i will try this one hope it works thanks for the info.
A mouse ate my seedlings! 1st time this has ever happened to me. I was devastated.
my brassicas are getting eaten as well pete, but by catepillars. i am near you in zone 8 and this back and forth cold/warm weather is stressing out the brassicas, thus attracting the critters to come take them out. also, since those seedlings on the ground in the tray had not yet been transplanted into your raised bed, they were not sending out a stressed signal like the ones you just transplanted. maybe try adding some leaf mulch on top of your bed and the critters may focus on that instead of seedlings. since i cant keep it cold, i just let the critters do what they do and at least they are creating some castings for my garden. just harvested some big bell peppers, in late december! haha
I just went out and got a load of jalapenos last night before it froze today. That plant won't ever stop! I got a bunch of little Candyland tomatoes that are growing too. That plant had a BUNCH of blossoms, but I doubt they make it, who knows? I'm close to Pete B, too, zone 8. Its like some kind of pests are always around and we have a lot of caterpillars, too.
@@juliebarnett9812 i think these warm-ups in temps are bringing those creepy crawlers back out, and the young winter plants are getting stressed by the warm temps. i had a bunch of lettuce already bolt.
@@bw-mi9xp Yes, it's all topsy-turvy...🤣 to go along with the roly-poly bugs. 🐛
New Friend here,Just put out a short video tonight,My issue was earwigs! I was sick to my stomach seeing my starts disappearing! I use DE on everything. The bugs are still eating my zinnia seedlings in garden with DE..GRRRR
Good vid, thank you for testing these methods and sharing the results in real time. Well done.
Omg I have the exact same prob. All my 5 veggies full of baby plants, even the 3-4 in tall one, gone , disappeared, everything but the stems.please keep us up to date what else do you to
U doing it rite put da white around da plant, and on da plant, and water around outside of da white stuff, , it worked, for me
I’m dealing with this problem now ! I planted down some seedlings last night , and this morning they all gone 😅 …..
Hopefully you get that resolved...
I hope you found Sluggo Plus. I had the same issue and tried everything. The DE stopped them for a while but they started eating on the plants again as soon as it was gone. Sluggo Plus has lowered their population enough after 1 treatment that they aren't eating my plants anymore. I have another set of beds and the pillbugs in them don't touch my plants...strangest thing. The colony in my 10x10 tent just learned to eat the plants and wouldn't stop.
Thanx
👍
I am so very sorry for you. Ray Delbury Sussex County NJ
we call those pill bugs, or potato bugs up here in ohio. had no idea they were a problem in the garden. try the beer trick for us. thanks.
Hey Pete I saw a lady putting out oranges at night around the infected plant and then knocking them off in the morning. She said it wasn’t a quick fix but worked. Too bad!
Interesting, it might have something to do with the orange oil the peels have. thanks.
@@petebeasttexashomesteading Ur welcome! Hope it helps
I had the same problem in my raised be garden, but the pill bugs focused on my bean plants. Sometimes they munched on carrots and beets. I used to like to compost directly into my beds, but that caused the pill bug (and others) population to explode.
After winter, pill bugs and earwigs will attack new plantings because they are hungry from hibernation and there is a lack of food. This may not be your case as it was not my case.
Repeated beer traps can be effective at reducing population, however you do not get all of them. Be sure to bury the beer traps so the top of the trap is at level with the ground. This way they can better smell the beer and easily fall into it. I found that a shallow cup attracted them better than a large cup. Pill bugs seem to like Budweiser and hate Pap's. LOL!
Pill bugs do not like diatomaceous earth, but to me it seems like it does not kill them.
In my opinion, next winter remove the dirt from your raised beds and start anew. Try not to repeat what caused them to explode in population. For me that was too much composting into my bed.
You can also use beer in a bowl and bury just above the soil to attract them. 😃
One thing that I was thinking of is to dig up the 1st few inches of soil and throw it into your chicken pin and let the chicken have a roly-poly feast. Granite though it will be a lot of extra work.
🤣🤣🤣
I wonder if you could somehow put a chicken up on the raised bed for a feast? I'm sure it/they wouldn't just stay on the ones you want them to, though. 🤣
I was going to suggest that Pete take his favorite hen who might be accustomed to being handled by Pete and place her in the box and let her scratch for bugs. But then she would scratch so much of the mulch out of the box. But then she would probably gravitate towards the leafy greens in the neighboring beds
I have the same problem right now.
For some reason it's really bad this year. Probably has to do with the rain and temperatures we've had.
See my comment above about using coffee grounds. It has SAVED my garden from my pill bug infestation!
So sorry about the bug infestation, I know it is so disheartening when you put in all that work. Hang in there Pete you’ll get them.
I wonder if that's what was eating on my garden in the spring 🤔
I don’t know why, but I grew up thinking rolie polies were harmless to gardens.
Problem: the seedlings are stressed when transplanted. This is why they left the untransplanted trays alone. Stressed or sick plants literally call themselves out.
Solution: plant from seed directly. Or take aluminum foil and wrap the base of each plant. The bugs will think it is not a plant and pass it by.
I planted my bean seeds directly into the soil and they have killed almost all of them
You may try to dust the seedlings and around them or the whole bed with ash dust.
Hi pete i was hoping to grt the ratio for the weed killer using pool salt i only have a 2 gallon spray bottle but i have the salt now thankyou i couldnt find your video on it
Hi! Man, im way behind planting a garden successfully this year! Same problem. Soo far ive put down dishwashing soap, eggshells an now diatomaceous powder. Maybe next year i should lay some down a few times before planting as a pre prevention?? What are your thoughts?
I wonder if you could use those yellow glue traps around the base of your plants? I use them for aphids. I use sluggo plus in my raised beds which helps but I still have watch for the little creatures and their damage.
I'm sure it would help catch a lot of them.
When it rains, I will have to reapply that diatomaceous earth right?! Since you said it will turn into "mud"
Correct
Sounds like a Large tune can May be perfect.
“Always plant more then you need, a lot more “
Please remember to use the food grade diatomaceous earth NOT regular
Yep I forgot to mention that but I did put a link to what I used under the video in the description.
Put a clear cup collar around seedlings
One more thing I was thinking, is that if you had more bacterial and fungal activity in the soil, those bugs might be deep down feeding off of that system instead of eating your new seedlings. They must be starving. That soil looks a little bit dry and inert. I wonder if replacing it with some more “live“ soil and compost would be the thing to do to get the balance back into your beds that will allow for the proper control of these creatures. Nematodes will be attracted to the beds in the nematodes are natural predators of insects. I wonder if they would affect these types. Not sure, but I’m willing to bet the overall balance of the environment would change drastically if you added fresh compost to the mix by scraping out the top foot of the bed and replacing it with some thing that had more bacteria and fungi in the soil…
I have plenty of earth worms in the garden beds and they keep the soil alive but I just over watered it and they multiplied.
I am tired of it, I guess I will start hydroponics now
July 17, 2023
I think they make little tunnel holes to go down deep & work themselves up along the stem & leaves. I have brand new spring planted perennials in zone 5B HVNY & the dirt is healthy. Because of the ongoing heavy rains- I now have an infestation!!! I've been doing all this stuff, but handpicking them & pinching them 2x a day too. I removed the mulch as much as I could. Most of the Pill Bug info out there is very misleading about unhealthy or new plants being their diet- they are not very selective at all if you have high moisture & wood mulch! They WILL eat anything & they reproduce fast. The mama bug has a pouch on their belly. Yes, I now have babies! 🤬🤬
I'm headed out to my garden now to see what's happening & also going to try smelly spices. I'm also going to apply concrete caulk to seal the concrete cracks. Here's to kickin' Pill Bugs out! Good luck & thanks for the video!
They are hungry, just give them a mulch to eat and they are not going to damage your plants, they are composters, you should use a cover crop before your spinach
It must be food grade DE to use safely
Yep I forgot to mention that but I did put a link to what I used under the video in the description.
Can I use beer trap to get rid of them?
Not sure if those rolly Polly's are attached to beer, but it's worth a try.
@@petebeasttexashomesteading Thanks for response. I didn't see Polly Molly which snipping the stem of Dahlia, Globe plants. But I will try Beer trap to see if I catch the hidden culprit. It could be caterpillar or earwigs as well. I will keep you update.
With garlic spray::: Do I have to spray on plants or surrounding soil?
@@petebeasttexashomesteading So garlic water spray doesn;t work either. I will try Citrus Peel tonight
Wonder why centipedes dont eat them🤔
Cream of wheat works pretty good for ants.
How did they get into the beds in the first place? Are they open on the bottom or is there metal closing off the beds? Maybe that’s something to consider…
They find their way from the bottom where the metal touches the ground cover cloth, it's not a perfect seal.
If you make your own compost, they'll find it, and when you put some of it into your raised beds, the stowaways will think you've provided them a great place to live. No natural enemies any more, hooray!
By the way, I believe they impede composting because they'll consume a lot of the green matter you add before it has a chance to break down in concert with the browns. The temperature in my piles isn't getting into the hot zone this year as it has in the past. Coincidentally, I've seen a LOT more pillbugs in the pile.
@Peteb. Can you spread the diatomaceous earth starting directly around the stem of the plant and spread wide (outword) AFTER watering (with the water already drained in the soil)?
The soil and the diatomaceous earth has to stay dry or it will absorb the moister and get wet.
You could also go out there at night and spray them with soapy water.
Chemical sprays do work and are a lot less work.I don't believe there harmful and much cheaper. There is a kneed for it.
I agree that they do work but I'm not willing to put those in my body. I already suffer the effects of glyphosate tore up my gut and can no longer eat regular US wheat products. Who knows what pesticides will do to you in the long run, cancer, auto immune disorders?
Would the DE also kill the worms?
In the meantime could you use neem oil to kill the ones that are still coming up?
Not sure because they have an outer shell and I don't know if the neem oil will effect them.
Where are the water buckets from? Can’t find a link in your description. Do you fill them up with a hose or is it rain water? Thx!!
I got them at tractor supply and we put them there so the water from the greenhouse fills them up when it rains.
Need oil and soapmix
Neem
You said they liked the darkness so how about don't how about you try putting artificial lighting during the night hours that will keep them at Bay at Bay and also Help grow and Excite your plants
I did think about that but I would have to buy and connect 20 lights. But I might try that on a few of the worst beds.
@@petebeasttexashomesteading that's a good idea try it on a couple and see how it works.... keep me posted partner
Have you tried Bonide Neem oil?
Cant you dust with seven. Or spray with new #8 eight
I really don't want the chemicals in the garden beds but it would be my very last resort.
What's the Liquid 7 & the DE ?
Sevin is a brand-name pesticide, contains the active ingredient carbaryl. Although it is registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use on vegetables, Sevin is toxic and you should exercise extreme caution when you apply it. DE is Diatomaceous earth, it is made from the fossilized remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called diatoms. Hope this helps
Would not worms eat the rolly pollys?
I don't think earth worms would eat them.
I even tried to ‘rent’ a friends chickens to come in and eat them….
What yield are you getting from those raised beds?
Last winter was an amazing yield. We had more food then we ever thought we could grow and eat. This year, not so much 🙁 it all depends on the weather plus we are very late to planting in the greenhouse this year.
Why he isn't picking them off to try and save his plants I have no idea! Guess it wasn't that important to him. Why would you plant you plants in infested soil in the first place? Treat the soil first and then plant you vegetables. 😢
Do you think Neem Oil would help?
It wouldn't hurt plus make sure you mix it with soapy water because I know that soap will really do a number on them.
😢
Ooh i HATE rolly pollys! ;just as bad as caterpillars!! 😡
Oh course, you know this means WAR
Disregard that last text came out all wrong. You said they like to come out at night so how about trying to put artificial lighting on At night and that should keep them at Bay and help promote an Excite your plants
👍
Hi Pete - I recently came across this video and remembered your rolly polly problem......Not sure if you're still experiencing that, but maybe this solution the guy found for fungus gnats will work for you too??? No harm in giving it a try: ua-cam.com/video/BwelmZFjEzI/v-deo.html
