I am 59.. started at 52 (before menopause). I have more aches and pains since menopause, but I am still dancing. Summer 2018 i earned my pointe shoes! If something starts to hurt, I may take a week or two off, but I get the privilege of dancing. I take with kids - I love the challenge. In class I am just another dancer who has high expectations. Being older one may not be able to do everything, but you should be able to have a good experience. For example, I limit jumping or jump holding on to the bar- to limit pressure on my knees. Good luck and give it a try!

Hey, me too :(( I'm 19 tho, and I started ballet yesterday! It was so much fun. There's so much pressure when we're barely adults or almost-adults, it's like the worse age for starting new things (in people's eyes) bc they will always laugh and point,, but you can be successful despite what everyone says, as long as you work hard 🙆🏻‍♀️ we're young, we can do it

I started ballet in my 30s & am obsessed.
I think it’s weird that people can have all sorts of hobbies & talents, but that the expectation for ballet is only to do it professionally. Nobody is shocked at a man (or woman) who likes to play basketball for fun. Men of all heights will get together to shoot hoops without the goal of joining the NBA. Same with people who like to crochet. They’re not expected to open a store & sell it all. Most people who learn the piano don’t do it for a career in it. The ballet stigma is so weird.

I’m 21, ( 22 next month ) legally blind and I started dancing at 20.... it’s not easy, but I dance every day because I love it, in class, at home, I get solid As and Bs in my dance classes and I’m the only blind woman in there, the rest of it is sighted people..... i’m even starting jazz this month because I’ve always wanted too
It’s never too late and any obstacle can be overcome, people in wheelchairs dance, people with prosthetics dance, blind people, deaf people... all kinds of people, you have one life, and it’s too short to not do things you enjoy.

Thanks for this. I'm 47 yrs old and always loved ballet. It was never a good time due to life, having kids, money, etc. Kids are all adults now, money isn't as tight, and my body has a lot more issues than it ever did before yet, I recently decided I'm going to start ballet. Right now due to the pandemic, I'm sticking to online/at home videos for beginners and mostly beginner ballet workouts which most include core exercises in which I need to build up badly. I started ballet as a 68 year-old male. It’s completely changed my body awareness. I’m more flexible, I’m inspired to stick to a fitness routine, my balance is better and it’s just great fun. I’m patient and a little realistic about how much I can do but I’m working consistently and with discipline to improve centimeter by centimeter. Lots of people think I’m a bit nutty but everyone thinks it’s great. I’m completely behind the view that it’s not too late to start. Just set rational goals and expectations and go for it!

Just turned 22 and had an unexpected dream that I did ballet in a studio with a friend (who also loves it but stopped at 16). I’ve always appreciated the art form but thought the dream was a calling to finally start.
I’ve been following vid tutorials for the past few days and loved the feeling of mindfulness when you’re dancing. One day I hope to attend a class though...

It depends on whether you want to be professional, or not. All the science shows that you need 10,000 hours of focused practice before puberty to be a pro dancer. Of course, anyone can dance at any age! But to be a professional, that’s different for most people (not all).

The feeling it give me was calm, peaceful, hard working, I had dream when I was young. I just wish never quit. I just miss the how I felt when feel when I dance.

Funny thing is during teenage years you feel like you've already grown too much to start ballet but once you are 20 you're considered 'young' as an adult ballet starter

I think all the teacher and studio need to change this stigma! I was bought to the studio at 5 years old and was not able to continue( well also I felt very embarrassed) as the other kids started at 3 😅.
Now in my 30s and started class this year with both Ballet and Jazz trainings, luckily I live in a big city adult classes are very accessible. It did wonder to my posture and just now feel like a completely different person I walk straight, so much more confident, I now know how to post well for pictures 😂😊 so good for my health especially for this modern lifestyle of working on a desk for long hour

I'm 11 and I want to start, I don't have friends that do ballet, I have friends that do dance. I've always wanted to do ballet, so when I was five, my mom signed me up for a "ballet" class. It was actually jazz. I was kinda bummed because my mom didn't sign me up for the right class, so my five year old brain told me to quit. Now, thinking back, I want to try ballet again. 😮

I wanted to start dancing ballet when I was 15 and told just one friend about it. Unfortunately she (she didn't know anything about dancing) told me that I was too old and as naive as I was back then I didn't question her statement.
Now I am 20 years old and finished high school this summer. Moreover I started taking ballet lessons about 3 months ago and it is the best thing I have ever done in my life! Unfortunately I still get anxious about being too old to become as skillful as I want to be. I'm just feeling like I missed the last 5 years of my life.

I got 19 two months ago, never danced or did any kind of sport ever before, my family could never afford it, but I always had interest in ballet or tennis for example, everyone tells me it's too late... but I really ONLY want to get more fit, have fun, be passionate about it and finally have a hobby for once in my life, school is killing me and I'm just in desperate need of something I can do that I enjoy, also I really just want to be more healthy and fit, I want to do something good for my mental and physical condition, I'm very insecure about my body image (not my weight, more my skin and body hair) and struggle with low self-esteem, what do you think? Should I try it or not, my mom laughed at me, she doesn't think I'd ever be fit enough to do ballet..

I’m 13 years old, and I really want to do ballet. I’m really scared to, because I would be starting late. I did it when I was like 5, but because of how my teachers treated the kids in the group, I didn’t want to go back. I loved ballet, but hated the woman who ran it. I’m so mad that I gave up, but I want to start again. There is a studio near me, and I think they do beginner classes for teens. I am seriously thinking about doing it. I don’t know though. I’m scared that I won’t be able to catch up, but my parents know, and they support me. My dream is to go on pointe, but I’m not sure if it’s too late. My sister has been doing figure scaring for nearly 15 years, and she had done ballet classes, tap classes, jazz classes, etc. She did a lot of ballet, got close to pointe, but didn’t do it because she focused on figure skating. She got really close to pointe, and could have done it if she wanted to, and still, she says that I have better arches than her, and she used to say how jealous she was of how flexible my feet are. I think she was just saying that, but sometimes I hope it’s true. I’m really scared, but I know this is something I want to do.
I am scared, and nervous. But I hope that this is something I can do...
If anybody has any tips, or stories from their experience, I would love to hear them!

It's incredibly discouraging and I want you to know you can be a dancer at any size or weight! I hope you continue training. We have lots of resources here for learning at home, plus there are lots of virtual classes from studios and companies across the world right now where you can continue learning on your own time. I'm 33 and, like some of these ladies, my family could never afford for me to do dance. I broke my 5th metatarsal on my right foot a couple years ago and unfortunately am now overweight. Dance has always been something I dreamed of doing....but now that I can afford it, I don't know where to start and, though I am trying to lose weight, I feel like my weight hinders me from looking graceful and poised. I also have extremely sickled feet and weak ankles, which is partly why I broke my foot. Any advice?

    • @BallerinasByNight
      @BallerinasByNight  3 роки тому +1

I feel like the best way to fix the feet and ankles is just to get to class and get to work! I found that once I started dancing I lost weight, but I understand the feeling of wanting your body to be “ready” to start. We will have find new things we want to “fix” to be ready, but really the best thing we can do is just start! It will all fall in place! ❤️ Jana
