Staring with a Sanderson win, ok, you've got my attention. That hero of ages ending though. So good. Man I do not like that starless sea cover. I just don't get it. I'm looking forward to reading more descender soon! :) I'm so whelmed by Ember in the Ashes series. I was the exact same with you on the second one. I started it but then put it down again but still kinda want to go back. Reading recursion right now! Its good! Very Dark Matterish haha. Most Emotional Read: Assasins Quest - Robin Hobb Which is funny because I struggled through the first two in the series and struggled to the end of this one too but then there were moments at the end that hit me in the feels. I guess thats more likely to happen at the end of story if things get wrapped up well. Most Unique Read: The Blade Itself - Joe Abercrombie This was a tough one. I don't think I read anything very unique this year. I would say this one stands out though because it handles characters exceptionally well and has a very close pov style where you really get into the characters head. I think it does it much better than anything else I read this year. Most Fandom Worthy: Queenslayer - Sebastian De Castell (Spellslinger series) I will die on this hill. Funniest book: All Systems Red - Martha Wells I could have gone with one of the spellslinger books here too as I probably got some laughs out of those too. But I thought this little novella was great too funny in a relatable way, which is great because the main character is an Artificial Intelligence. Best Cover : Darkdawn - Jay Kristoff I didn't love the finale to this trilogy but I have to admit, the cover is stunning. Best Contemporary: Silent Patient - Alex Michaelides I didn't read a straight contemporary last year. This is the closest I got. I need dragons, yo. Best Comic: Descender Vol 1 - Jeff Lemire I didn't read many comics last year but descender was one of the better ones! Best Fantasy: Red Sister - Mark Lawrence This was a really tough category, I had quite a few decent fantasy reads this year. Red Sister edges it though. I really enjoyed this one. Has a great cast of characters and a cool world. Best Science Fiction: All Systems Red - Martha Wells Damn I wish I read Recursion last year. Oh well, looks like 2020 sci-fi is off to a strong start! I only read two sci fi's in 2019. All Systems Red and Binti. I liked Binti, but it didn't blow me away. All Systems Red edges it for the more memorable character. Best Overall: Red Sister - Mark Lawrence Wow, that was really tough. Red Sister edges is getting 8.2 compared to "The Blade Itself" on 8 A solid reading year for me. Some very decent books and solid entries in series. I just read very little. Feburary through May I read nothing haha. Hoping to find some new faves this year though!
I'm gonna scroll my goodreads and think about these categories for a bit, but my favorite overall books have to be the spellslinger series bacause I just loved doing the group read with the magical weirdos so much. The books are awesome and seeing each others reactions day by day just made the whole thing even better 💙
The best book cover category would probably be the hardest for me. I’m such a sucker for buying books based on how pretty the cover is, or how well it ‘speaks’ to me. I’d have to say Strange the Dreamer or Wild Beauty would take the win on it though. I always love this video because it makes me think about my own reading that year.
Yessss Recursion was sooo good. Okay in 2020 I WILL read Descender! I actually have the first volume! My overall best book has to go to The Starless Sea. I was just in awe of that book the whole time. I closed that book so many times to give it a hug. Yes, I’m that person 😂🥰💙✨
My favorite book of 2019 has to be The Lies of Locke Lamora. Fantasy, pirates, thieves, found family, and so much witty sarcasm. It just warms my twisted little heart!
Book Roast you will love it! The audio books are exceptional as well. The narrator does a wonderful job of conveying the emotion of the books and making you feel like you are in the middle of the action.
Yes! I don't know if anyone can really dislike that book, I suppose it's fairly slow but if that doesn't bother you I think you'll enjoy it! Thank you! Happy New Year!
My best book of 2019 was No Man of Woman Born by Ana Mardoll, which was a short story collection of fantasy stories based around gendered prophecies that were fulfilled by trans spectrum characters. It was so original and inventive while still being deeply rooted in the high fantasy tradition and I just loved having a book that starred so many different trans spec characters. Absolutely adored it and can't recommend it enough.
You make me wanna read all these. My bank is crying 😭 also the starless sea is one of the prettiest things in existence rn 😍Happy 2020 hope it's better than 2019 x
I know it was a crap reading year for you, but I'm glad you got some winners in! I almost always prefer the UK covers of books, but I have to admit, I think the US cover of Starless Sea is so much prettier. Maybe it's the lack of giant bug on the front? 🤔 Kings of the Wyld was definitely my top Goodreads read of the year, though Spellslinger came in a close second. My all time favorite, I can't talk about yet, but I'll be screaming from the rooftops come mid 2020. 😁
BOOK AWARDS 2019: 🥳🎉🎈 1. MOST EMOTIONAL READ: "All the Bright Places" by Jennifer Niven--When it comes to reading, I am not a very emotional reader either. With that said, I have become more of one this year because I have been dealing with personal struggles. I read this book for the first time last summer and I originally gave it a 4-star rating. I reread this book in March of this year because the movie had just come out on Netflix, and I upped my rating to 5 stars. I know this book is deemed problematic to many other readers, but for me personally, it impacted my life, which it only took me to realize after watching the movie and reading the book for a second time around. I really connected to this book, and I feel like a 5 star rating is appropriate. It's a very emotional read for sure. 😭😭 2. MOST UNIQUE READ: "The Archived" by Victoria Schwab--I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I wasn't expecting the route Schwab would take. I enjoy her other works, of course, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I attended one of her recent book signings and she explained why this book never became a trilogy, though she plans on writing one when she receives the rights for it back. 🤔🤔 3. MOST FANDOM WORTHY: "In an Absent Dream" by Seanan McGuire--Honestly, the only series I really care about buying merch for is Harry Potter, which I did actually reread in 2019. In fact, that's the only merch I have anyway... With that said, The Wayward Children series is one that is so easy to fall in love with, similar to The Folk of the Air series. Though the Wayward Children series is considered a part of the Adult Fantasy or just Fantasy genre, these are super easy to read, and super quick as well. This is a good place to start when it comes to reading something more profound. You get so invested in the character's lives. I just finished the 5th installment at the end of March! I just love this series with all my heart! McGuire does an excellent job with this one!! 😇😇 4. THE FUNNIEST READ: "The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue" by Mackenzie Lee--Can I just say that I don't really read books that are funny...even this one isn't that funny. However, the antics from the group of characters is pretty entertaining to say the least, so I have to pick this one from all the books I read last year! 😂😂 5. BEST COVER: "The Sun Is Also a Star" by Nicola Yoon--This book is so pretty! I have the American Hardcover edition with the purple sprayed edges and I am just in love with it! 😍😍 6. BEST CONTEMPORARY: "The Sun Is Also a Star" by Nicola Yoon--Once again, I have to choose this book as the winner. I was really trying not to pick the same book for multiple categories, but this book was the obvious winner for this category. And no, I haven't seen the movie yet. I'm afraid to because the actors, though are young, don't look young enough to portray the characters... ❤️❤️ 7. BEST COMIC: "Everyone's a Aliebn When Ur A Aliebn Too" by Jomny Sun--I normally only read fiction, meaning I don't normally tend to gravitate towards Comics or Graphic Novels. I'm not sure what this book classifies as, but I'm choosing it for this category because it's the only book I read that is similar enough to this category. 👽👽 8. BEST FANTASY: "An Ember in the Ashes" series by Sabaa Tahir--I have to agree with you on this one. I read the 3 books that are currently published, and they quickly became one of my all-time favorite Fantasies. I was very skeptical before I started to read the first book, but I flew right on through it, as well as the other 2. I am happy about the cover change because I owned the 1st book with the original cover and the last 2 with the new covers. Although we should never judge a story by its cover, a picture truly does speak a thousand words. As simple as the new covers are, I personally believe that they are more inviting. And as you don't live in the USA, I am talking about the American editions. 🧙♂️🧙♂️ 9. BEST SCIENCE FICTION: "Skyward" by Brandon Sanderson--I was mildly surprised by this one! As much as I hate to say it, I have a difficult time reading Science Fiction. I love this genre because the story is typically a variety of events that group together to create a unique book overall. I have a collection of Sanderson's Fantasy books that he is so famous for, but I haven't picked them up yet, and I wanted to start with something a bit more light, meaning something easier to read, so I could get used to his writing style though the genre would be different. I thought this new Young Adult Science Fiction series would be my best bet, and boy was I right! I loved this book so much! It was super easy for me to follow. I really paced myself with it, and once I was finished, I preordered the next in the series. I haven't read it or his other works yet, though. 🧪🧬 🧙♂️ 10. BEST OVERALL READ: " The Diviners" and "Lair of Dreams" by Libba Bray--This is another book I was skeptical about... For one, the print on the page was minuscule, and the length of the overall book was a beast!! And for two, this book seemed to be a historical fantasy type so I wasn't quite sure... But I must say I really LOVED these 2 books!! I only own and have read the 1st 2 books so far. And last year, I started to listen to the audiobooks of books while also following along in the physical book. I must say that the audiobooks to this series are just spectacular. The narrator is so good at separating the point of view from each character, not to mention the fact that this series takes place during the 'roaring' '20s in New York, so the accent and dialect from that time period is just so spot on. This is another series that you find yourself invested in each of the character's lives, and let me tell you, there's a fair few. Not only that, but the story itself is just so unique. I haven't read anything else quite like this one. And now that the 4th and final installment is published, I am so eager to get my hands on the 3rd and last books already!! 🥳😍🎉🙌🥰😁🤯🤗🤓🤩😇 OMG was this a BOOK of a comment to write, but it just had to be done!! So here you are, hahah!! 😅😅😅😅
Okay totally random idea but you said “you’re not actually giving any medals”... what if next year you make bookmark medals for each category so if you do reread the book they have their own special 2020 Best ‘category name here’ it’d be so fun! X
I'll have to think about it - but I think my top read overall is probably Name of the Wind (it probably also would get an honorable mention for best covers (for the entire series tbh) - I looove how all the UK hardbacks look together on a shelf since you see all the seasons (and then I assume the next book will somehow look like spring *fingers crossed* )
My 2019 awards go to: Most Emotional Read: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Most Unique Read: Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid (new instabuy author). Vaughan and Fiona Staples. Best Fantasy: The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden. Best Science Fiction: Cinder by Marissa Meyer. Aaah, I still have to get Recursion, I really want to read it! Okay, here are my 2019 favourites (I left out rereads though): • most emotional: The Astonishing Colour of After • most unique: Illuminae • most fandom worthy: the Spellslinger series (books 2 + 3 are my faves so far, stll have to read the final one though) • funniest: I didn't read anything "haha funny" in 2019, but I love Leigh Bardugo's sense of humour in SoC/CK and KoS • prettiest cover: either King of Scars (that hardback edition is gorgeous) or Only Human • best contemporary: Starfish (great anxiety rep) • best fantasy: Strange the Dreamer/Muse of Nightmares • best sci-fi: Only Human • best overall: The Starless Sea

Great Video G and my favorite books of 2019 are definitely Lost in A Book 📖, All the Disney Twisted Tale Books that I own so far and the Whole Gone Series By Michael Grant I could not put his books down and I literally just finished his last book in the series And I didn’t want it to end and if ever a book series should be made into movies it’s The Gone Series Hands Down!!! imho It draws you in from book one all the way to book 9 Happy New Year G and Take Care Oh and p.s I’m currently reading Two By Two by Nicholas Sparks I love his books too 😉 Have a Wonderful Day Love Your Channel ❤️❤️🙂
So for the category 'Most Emotional Read', do you mean in a GOOD way, or just overall? Because the most emotional read in a GOOD way was 'The Book Thief' (didn't cry, but teared up). But the book that I have the strongest feelings towards is the worst book I've ever read in my life that months later, I am STILL angry about simply because I remember it exists ('Dracula: The Un-Dead). Two very different answers for the same question.
Hah thank you! 😂♥️ it’s from a company called TIJN eyewear but they discontinued this particular frame which is a shame but they do have many other fun ones!
a crimson daisy Goodreads lists it as both historical fiction and contemporary. I don’t understand why it counts as both though because I haven’t read it yet.
Staring with a Sanderson win, ok, you've got my attention.
That hero of ages ending though. So good.

Midnight at the electric was my favorite :) I haven't heard that many people talk about it but it's so so good
I seriously need to read Evelyn! Definitely soon in 2020!

The x files sound effects 😂
I am sure I am probably the 1000th person to ask you this, but where did you get your glasses?! I love them!
Hah thank you! 😂♥️ it’s from a company called TIJN eyewear but they discontinued this particular frame which is a shame but they do have many other fun ones!

isnt seven husbands historical fiction and not contemporary?
a crimson daisy Goodreads lists it as both historical fiction and contemporary. I don’t understand why it counts as both though because I haven’t read it yet.
