- Arborvitaes are generally easy to grow and don’t have problems. Arborvitaes do not like too much water. If they are planted in a low spot or a place that stays wet after a rain, they will not do well. They also tend to have problems when they are planted next to a fence or wall. Another issue here is that you should not plant a monoculture, or all the same plant. It is likely one will die and that creates an obvious hole in your landscape.

In the south the Leyland cypress are dying off by the millions. Everywhere I go I see people cutting them down because they’re dead. But I’ve never heard of a marble arborvitae dying. My grandfather had one in Clay soil and it was massive.
You have to put mulch down to protect it from extreme heat and hold moisture.
Hi. We have two of the same tree starting to fade. And of course as you say right in the middle of about 30. We planted them about 5 yrs ago and had no trouble until now. Only change really is we have been putting out grass trimmings behind between them and the fence. Thought it would fertilize. Could that be why. ? I really appreciate your help and time.
I've read Arbs prefer cold but not southern U.S. heat. Could it be heat stress causing the browning?

I have a green emrald arb I want to transplant. Right now it is against a privacy fence and dead on that side for lack of sun. Transplanting to full sun. So the question is, will the dead side fill in once it gets sun?
It should, but it may take it awhile.

Yes WHYY is this? Ive had FIVE gardeners here and a ton of friends and noone can tell me what the problem is, Ive planted new ones every year, Ive changed the soil, put fertilizer in and lime and nope.

@@rollin19 Tell you what I did; I threw them away and laied new soil where I planted a plant that prefers shade and that worked. I will never be able to have a hedge there. Ive accepted that.
