    I’ve owned both the manual and tripT, the car is so much better as a manual and i agree if you get a nice example it’s one of the best second hand cars you can buy - the looks and spec haven’t really dated, the double nav scene is really nice pc quality. Amazing car with lovely rumbling German V8. My current daily is a Sprint blue 2011 premium with carbon fiber inlay and white leather :)

    Just bought an 2009 A5 w/ 65k miles in the USA for $15k. My next car will be the same exact model but 2013-2016. Whenever the year is that they remodeled the body again. A5 is fantastic but yeah I definitely want an S5 next. Best car value atm IMO.

    Hi Jeff, I haven't seen any of your video's. Just wanted to say I also own a S5 V8 over here in Europe and I love it to bits. For me, the best thing is the engine pulling me forwards at 1400 - 1800 rpm. It just sounds glorious. It's also my daily as the Porsche is more suited for the weekends!

      Re your squeakŷ gearshift: a long time ago (1980s) a number of VW gearboxes would get squeaky and become rubbery and a bit obstructive in shift quality. It was down to some cheap selector part starting to fail and was a relatively easy to replace. Perhaps its the same ailment on your box?

  • @Chris.Davies
    @Chris.Davies 7 років тому

    You almost got it right Jeff! The best value GT car right now is an Audi - but not that one. The Audi 4.2 V8 is fantastic, no doubt about it - but not when you consider the 3.0 Supercharged V6 TFSI engine in the S4. These two engines should be very equal in power, but the 3-litre should have better torque, given the blown nature, and the lighter weight.
    Audi intentionally hobble the 3.0 TFSI engine by way of the ECU, to ensure that it stays well below the power output of the V8 RS4.
    So, what you do is this: you go down to your local dealer, and pick up a 2009-2010 Audi S4 for a song, then you take it down to Audi, and get them to plug in their diagnostic gear, locate engine management, and switch "Audi Performance Mode" to "On".
    That turns the car from a 333 hp car into a 420+hp torque monster, that will still hit 35 mpg on the highway, if you drive like a normal person.
    The only thing left to do is to install a set of Stoptech 6-pot front brakes and rotors, and you've got a car that even an RS4 can't leave behind. ua-cam.com/video/2KfMY96v_Gc/v-deo.html
    S5 is a lovely daily car indeed. But I would still drive my 928S between cities. :)

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  7 років тому

      That does sound like goodeasy power, but you don't get a manual, the low down torque of the v8, and that sound....... :D

    As a German, I am always confused when I see German cars as a right-hand drive
    Japanese cars as right-hand drive or English are normal cars for me
    Only with German cars I just can not get used to the look as a right-hand drive.
    My thinking is very funny I think.

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  7 років тому

      Yes you are right, they 'start' in the low 30's, but they are still a lot of car for the money. If you don't care so much about the go, the A5 can be had quite cheap.

    • @brettshields1018
      @brettshields1018 7 років тому +1

      A mate had an A5 new; it was a pretty ordinary car, and he didn't keep it long. The S5 is much smarter choice.
      I am looking for a new daily, but being distracted by the tribulations of my old Alfa. I am doing the timing belts ATM and it is driving me crazy; I have no idea what the engineers were thinking when they designed some of this stuff, but I guess it is part of the fun / challenge. This is what awaits you when you move on to the 105.

    So it still handles better than most things on the road right? Its obviously not a 911. But I'm considering this or another German car, I'm coming from a very nice handling Subaru Legacy, so that's the only thing I'm a bit iffy on is handling.

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  7 років тому +1

      Still handles nicely, and is still a heap of fun to drive through the twisties. It just feels heavier than a lot of other things. I drove a 2014 Maserati Ghibli a couple of weeks ago and that turned in better and felt a bit more nimble than the S5. The S5 is a nicer car on the highways and to daily than the Maserati though. I think you need to take it for a test drive and see what you think.

    Hey Jeff, nice video. Sorry, but you're so wrong in your Information about the tiptronic. It's so fine and smooth - the best for a GT like the Audi S5 (In Slot "D"). The sound of this great engine is in low bass, like a speed boat. But if you shift on "S", the car is changing from Dr. Jeckyll to Mr. Hyde: I'ts going so fast and changes the gears in short times, hangs on gas and put you forward like a cannonball. 5.3 sec. from 0 - 100 km/h is not so bad. And the downshifts are noisy with a little unburned gas - I love it. In all other things, you're right. I love your video. I love the S5 and I hope to see more. Thanks. [Please sorry for my bad english.]

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff

      If I was in traffic every day, then I would probably want an auto. Maybe it is just because I am used to dual clutch autos, but I want immediate shifts, and the S5 was still sluggish. I have always been biased towards manuals though, so maybe I am a bit one eyed ;)

    This is really interesting for a potential buyer. Thanks!
    I was actually swaying more toward the auto as (in the s4 v8 at least, which i presume this shares its gearbox with) people complain that the gearing in the manual is massively short, leaving you at high rpm on motorway's etc. Have you found that?
    Also, it seems common in the examples I'm looking to have had 2 clutch changes! which seems rather excessive (and expensive!).

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  6 років тому +1

      I have had the car for almost 2 years now and the clutch has been good. It does slip if I slap it into second from the top of first, but that is more that it is all wheel drive and it stops things from breaking.
      As for gearing, not that I have found. It cruises nicely at 120kph.

    Great vid, 80 grand? (uk) I think they were 50 something new here, i'm looking for one now, '08, with less than 80k miles they're going for between 13 = 15k, there's one for £9,700 with 230k miles on it.

      Yep, we get screwed on prices in Aus. The cheapest roughest one you could get here starts at around $25k and they have around 180k kms.

      Christ! Well I went for it and got one, a 2009, 68,000 miles, 15 and a half grand. £.
      It's mad, it'll be cheaper to fly to the uk, buy one and ship it back, right hand drive no worries, sorted?

    With the (sad) demise of the local car manufacturing in Aussie are the protectionist import taxes going to reduce for the Euros? I know in NZ here in the past, when there was a local manufacturer in a particular industry sector, the govt would slap an import duty on equivalent imported products within that specific industry. This has been phased out, and the import taxes have been reduced hugely from what they were since the freeing up of our economy in the late 80's, but I've always been aware of the disparity in the Aussie market between the prices of Commodores/Falcons and Euro imports.

      I learned about it as a lad 30 years ago trying to buy a snowboard (tried one once and was hooked on the crazy new sport!) and wondering why an imported board cost so much more than the US market paid for the same board. Discovered we had one small manufacturer making shite boards on a very small scale and only surviving because the imported competition had their prices jacked sky high simply because they existed. Hopefully your Euro market will do the same. Some compensation for losing the mighty V8 utes.

      Unfortunately now the Australian government makes far too much out of the luxury car tax to ever remove it. There has been talk, but I seriously doubt it will go anywhere.

    AUDI has gotten a bad rep from audi owners for years!! and most of it was from owner lazyness.. and ignorance of the do's and the donts of owning an audi.
    most important is the type oil...type gas...and type air filter you use!!!
    these are very important dealing with audi..
    i tell folks all the time!!
    YOU DONT RUN THAT CHEAP ASS 86- 87 GAS AND cheap OIL IN A DIRECT INJECTION 4cyl TURBO CHARGED ENGINE you CANT
    IT WONT LAST DOIN THAT!!
    not even in the s-line
    ......amsoil 5w40 is the best oil you can get for that turbo!! fukk castroil....an E85 mix with priemium gas that keeps them plugs and piston tops clean and it brings the carbon build up wayy down, and the engine runs a few degrees cooler in the summer!!
    audi engines hate heat..and a K&N air filter so that turbo can breath and keep cool...THATS the key!!!
    keep that pcv clean and good coil packs and plugs brisk evo....good oil keeps that sludge away ...you will never have a problem.
    and get all your recall work done. that car will last 4eva! period.
    yrs 2008 to 2013 a4 a5 that is!! also s4 s5 a6 a7 aswell.
    same maintenance. dont forget get you recall work done!!!!
    6speed tiptronic and 6speed manual are the best trannys for these cars
    until you get in to the ones with the dual clutch , which are fukkin great!!! thats years 14 and up

    So in Germany you can get one of these with 150k-200k for under 20.000€ - the problem is you will pay your ass of for taxes, insurance, really costly maintenance and the gas of course *that is why we can't have nice things* and that is also the reason why so many people drive diesel (until recent events....)

    I hope it last you a LOOOONG time. If you have money to pay for service it won't hurt when the timing set takes a crap on you...i pity the fool(s) who buy these w/o doing their homework first. I certainly almost got bit in the ass while looking to buy an Audi with the 4.2L V8.

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff

      The G37 is a cheaper option (at least here in Aus), and possibly similar performance, but I the G37 (and all Nissan's of that era in my opinion) is a long way off in the design aspect. The Audi is in my opinion (and generally considered) a beautiful car and the cabin is also a much nicer place to be. If it is just about performance the G37 may even be a better car all around. The Audi feels very heavy on the road and as I say in this video it is a GT, not a sports car. I am a Nissan fan, and I have owned countless Nissans, and of course my current 240Z project, but I would never swap the S5 for a G37 myself.
