(964) Review: Sparrows DARK SHIFT Lock Pick Set
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 лис 2016
- The new "Dark Shift" is the first skeletonized set of lock picks from Sparrows. The set comes in a light green ballistic nylon case and includes all the most popular and effective picks available. The skeletonized handles makes them easy to hold, even under cold, wet conditions. In addition, you get an excellent selection of both BOK and TOK lock tensioners.

That is a gorgeous set. Gonna be asking Santa for this.
choochoochooseyou I have seen you comment on some of bills videos and after a few days finally remember why your screen name.sounds familiar. Are you a Simpson's fan?
if I was Santa, I would get you the set and slip in a picture of lumps of coal with the words "for next year?" written on the back of the picture.
To a new picker going through picking videos ,I must say Bill you are one of the best to learn from.
I have been eyeing this set since I realized how much I love this hobby haha! I'm only a few weeks in and I'm getting hooked more and more every day! the acrylic locks just aren't fun anymore though lol so I just ordered the progressive set of practice locks, a reload kit and a cutaway with spools from sparrows, just waiting for them to arrive and I cant wait lol!!. ..This pick set is a beauty! I'm gonna try to buy these next chance I get. what a fun way to kill quarantine time!
I am a beginner going through your locklab course, and I must say, your lessons, picking videos, and even the comments left on your page have proved to be an ENORMOUS help learning this amazing hobby! I actually asked my wife for my first real pick set for christmas! (*crossing fingers*) I have hand selected for her from the single picks section of Sparrows website, and cannot WAIT to try them out! Realized I was trying to go too fast based on a limited number of locks I have so far, I finally picked my first spool pin nearly a week ago! Thank you for taking the time to put these videos, as well as your tutorial website together!
Sparrows lock picks are starting to become one of my favorites. Both quality wise and visually wise.
Thank you for getting me into lock picking and giving me hours and hours of entertainment. Wish you the best Bill.
Great Vid!.
I purchased the Sparrow 4 lock kit and basic starter picks from your last video.
I'm hooked (no pun intended)
Picked all 4 locks 3 times each in 40 minutes, first time out. Great fun. I then picked every cheap crappy padlock I own and about 10 of those crappy gun cable locks. On to circular and double wafer.
Thanks.
this is a fun hobby.

Watching all your videos is making the lockdown semi bearable! Thanks
I bought my set when sparrows sent out the new items email. I can't wait to get mine!
Bill, just an FYI - The serrations that your index finger rest on is called jimping (JIM-PING). Jimping is a common knife and tool term that denotes any file-work, notches, etc used for traction and/or tactile feedback.
Bill, I would add a .050 tension bar. I have that bar set and find they are all too loose for TOK.
If I broke one of those picks I think I'd cry. Trying to order in the land down under.
The “EOD” set from Sparrows has the mini Jim and a mini knife as well as a set of wafer lock picks, all for 55$ US.
Without a doubt one of the nicest sets you've reviewed! I may just invest in this one, if I don't win it! Well done, Sparrows, and great review Bill!
Wow. That's a slick kit for the price. I've been cutting serrations in my handmade pick attempts. Really seems to help with control.
One of the better sets I've seen assembled.
Love this review. I would have ordered it right away, however I am waiting on a ghost set from Mad Bob's. They really did a great job on this one, I hope they keep it up. Your doing a great job on all the videos, I'm learning a lot. This is a great hobby. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
Ed
Thank you for what you do it's truly appreciated
This is such an awesome hobby!
I think the serrations were a very nice touch and show how high quality these picks actually are.
This set has all the picks I wanted to get at a fraction of the cost. XD Thanks for the vid! (wallet isn't so happy but I am)
I still carry this beloved set
Ordered these today and can't wait to use em! I also bought some really good clear shrink tube to find out if I like em better with it, or just naked.
Nifty looking little kit. Looks like adding handles, if a user wanted them, should be easy.
you are so great to explain in all your videos! Thank you! I renovate old biks and you been a great help to me! Best Regards Danni from Denmark
I've seen a lot of people ask about your Panavise in the comments. You might want to think about doing some sort of video/review of it.
I love that you give canadian prices
I was going to lay low on buying more picks, but I really love this set. Thank you Mr.Bill for the info.
wow loving this new stuff from sparrows !
Very nice kit.just ordered tuxedo royale and progressive locks..... putting them on my wishlist
just got this set in the mail today. these picks are awsome. would love to see all there picks looking like these
These look great, I think the gaps in the pick may help people working with gloves so that's a big plus. Also the variety looks really good - I haven't gotten any ToK tensioners in my set
Cool kit! I’m so new to all of this - I didn’t realize there are speed competitions. I’m pretty slow and methodical with stuff like this, so no speed competitions for me. Still, it’s fun to learn more about the legal lockpicking community. I’m sure I’ll find a place where I fit nicely.
You and Sparrows cost me a lot of money, but bring me tons of fun :D
From my video reviewing the Sandman & OctoRake.
HI.... DrDaveUSA, Sandman Creator......
The Sandman was created way back in the 1980's for DEEP-Cut pins (2-3 of
them) in front of shallow-cut pin(s) toward the back of the
cylinder.... The first key you showed also qualifies as a Sandman
quick-open if you place the "Valley / Hole" UP.... Then simply add a
bit of tension and jiggle-out...... Good job, Nice video... THANX
For the "Thumbs-Up" on the Sandman and the Sparrows Octo-Rake....
From Las Vegas, DrDave..... Clear......
Cool.picks...dip the ends rubber flex seal for handles might be even better..
the handles are like that for use with gloves , as with the serration near the top to hold with a gloved finger
Was just thinking I need a starter kit! Awesome, thanks for putting this together.
Says for use with gloves on their web site. Seems impractical, do they do competitions in gloves as well?
no but operators wear gloves. leos probably wear gloves too, but i dont imagine a leo cares about covert entry. im pretty sure leo just go straight to the battering ram.
extremely versatile looking kit... hint, hint, are u listening Santa!!
I like this set. Add a few things and have a good edc
Look Nice, I might have to pick one up in the future.
bought this right after watching your reveiw
love it.
I think the nub on the one pick has something to do with being used as a tensioner. I used this kit to pick a commando lock tonight. I'm pretty proud.
Pretty sure the cutouts are more than just aesthetics. Sparrows writes in their description for this kit that they're used to help increase feel when picking with gloves. They allow superior grip in gloves as opposed to smooth handles, which slide on gloves. I imagine the only folks picking with gloves on would be military, but Sparrows caters to that crowd - would explain the speed-picking nature of the kit.
I believe this set will be the next I buy
I love the cutout design
Wow, a lot of thought was put into that kit.
Just got intrested in lockpicking and found your channel, entered a couple of the different giveaways, whether i win or nott, thanks for the amount of resources you have put out/collected!
thank you Bill! You are the best!
Looking good :o, they gave the kit a rather fancy name like the tuxedo haha.
I love your videos, and those picks look sick! Much love from South Africa.
I bought one a few weeks ago. Awesome kit.
I just bought them. Did you like them?
Very nice kit.
finally a kit i might spend some money on/
thanks! I was looking at this kit vs the tuxedo. also, the sandman can be bought separately now.
Wow very nice picks
Hi, could you make a video showing how to use the mini Jim?
awesome kit, I really like the skeletonized look
awesome looking kit. would make a great EDC kit
Don't know if I like the look of the handles, but I guess I'd have to feel them to really decide
Great looking set. thank you for the review
Thanks again Bill. Nice pick set.
Great video. Thanks.
Its cool they put the different picks(Hybrid, Sandman & Tron) in this kit. But in doing so they now made these particular picks now exclusive to this kit. lol
Still love the look... Almost makes me want to get it too even though I have every one of these picks already. lol
mmm lovely mine are already on order !
really nice kit
This is a really nice kit, might buy it
I really want to try the TOK flat bars. I just got a set of picks recently and it didn't have them.
I like it for the tensioners alone. I will buy it. I just wish that it had some diamonds.
Really Awesome Set:)
cool pick set ive been looking into getting a new set or just buy couple better picks and tension wrenches and make my own set but I think I might just go with this set
Starting to think I should have spent a little more and grabbed this kit instead of the Tuxedo. Will probably add some top of the lock tension wrenches once I'm a little more competent with the basics.
Great video, even better kit
Sold. Ordered today. =]
love the looks might have to pick one up
another great review...thanks bill
That is how an intro is done!
looks really great! I might have to save a bit for it, though..
Hey Bill. For you personally, how do these picks compare in regards to feedback in comparison to the sparrows with black plastic handle? And which ones are Mord comfortable to use over a longer period of time? Shrink tube wouldn't impress me much on these and would destroy the purpose of this design as well.
Do you have any videos on using the slim jim
that bar set looks similar to the Peterson flat 5 or whatever it is. I haven't found a keyway small enough for any of them to fit without flopping around.
Hey Bill, You could have gotten the sandman by itself. It's on the bottom "single picks" page
really like the look of those, and the new take on grip with the mid-handle cutouts. have you tried picking with them yet, and if so have you noticed a difference in feedback and fatigue with regards to the new cuts and the ergonomic shape?
also, thanks to your knowledge and instructions i was able to successfully gut and repin six different locks tonight, using mini files and a precision digital calliper. i also taught a buddy to pick locks - best practises, building a mental map based on tactile feedback, checking excitement and frustration levels and resetting your approach. he pick seven different locks! and the ones he got he would repeat and got faster at opening them again based on the mental model of what was going on inside. so now he's got the bug, and instead of buying whole new double-sets of locks for new tenants at our apartments, i'm just spending 99c on a new blank key at home depot and repinning a new set!
those are some pretty darn nice looking picks
love your vids man keep up the great work!
Anyone who finds this now there is an expansion set usually findable by "dark shift expansion" with a slim jim, some wafer picks, a different rake and a pawl for combination locks... but no thinner picks unfortunately
Thats a beautiful set... Uk bumpkeys are out of stock on lots of sparrows items atm . 🤔😥😥😥
I love that set!
cool set
Looks like the Shallow Euro Hook.
really really awesome looking kit. imho
You say that you don't know what the rope is for. Maybe to have something to hold on to when you pull. More than two fingers
Richard Hiller , bosnian bill, I really like the rope, short as the jim is, its tuff enought to work it with, and it hang nicely on the side of my creeper's custom kit ;)
looks great
the serrations on the top of the picks are called "Jimping".
Thanks, I never knew that. Three languages and I never learned that word until now...;)
very nice set
That is an amazing set.
Seems to be a nice kit.
Nice video.
Yay sparrows!
Good stuff.
Looks like a good kit
