- Welcome back to Boxing After Dark! Tonight, we rewind the clock to 2008. With Roy Jones Jr fresh off a significant defeat to Antonio Tarver and a surprising victory against Félix Trinidad, he wants to prove to the world he's still got it by challenging the 46 and 0 "Pride of Wales" Joe Calzaghe.

Joe's run at the end of his career when he beat Lacy, Kessler, Hopkins and then Roy is what defined him as a fighter. So rare that all of a top champion's defining wins come at that stage but Joe did it. On top of that with his dad by his side all the way. There's a reason everyone in the UK loves Calzaghe.
The one guy I thought would finish Joe got beat worse than any of his 47 wins, Jeff Lacey. I thought Lacey would end Joe but Joe ended Lacey.
When Roy wasn’t even a shadow of his shadow
40 years old and should have retired
lol, it would have ended the same at any stage of his career. RJJ avoided him for a reason.
You realize they were the same age right ? 😂😂😂
@@eriklaguira Roy was shot after he came back down from HW, was never the same
Don’t matter him and joe was both old asf in this fight
Joe Calzaghe is the most underrated boxer and one of the greatest. Never cherry picked fights and retires 47-0. I remember a fighter said he didn't punch hard and that he only threw slaps. His response was perfect,.. "well, I slapped my way to 32 KO's" This man averaged 1,000 punches per fight with an extremely high landing percentage.
Exactly !!
Calzaghe was never a 'showboating specialist'. He was a clever, agile, awkward and unconventional fighter who was undefeated 47-0.
This was a wipeout. Jones second most overrated guy in the game
@@caseyhouser9839 P4P fighter of the 90's... Yeah... Totally overrated.
*In figher. Smh!
46-1
@@caseyhouser9839 This fight happened in 2008 and roy had been out of his prime for a while. He still one of the best fighters of the 90s.
Aww at the end you can see how much Joe loved his dad. Two great boxers. Two of my faves in fact.
Joe Calzaghe surprised me a few times, is one of the most underrated and hardly ever mentioned super stars of boxing
Because he hid in Europe his entire career and got wins against legends when they were way past their primes. No one respects that.
@@xDreMack Joe Calzaghe beat a lot of guys everyone including me said he couldn't beat, but unlike others who can't accept it I did accept that I was wrong when I doubted him. He didn't hide anywhere. he beat people past their primes? nonsense.
boxing will humble almost all fighters eventually
Incredible to hear the commentator say "this might be the last time we see both fighters in the ring" and now looking to see Jones Jnr has fought 19 times since, as recent as this month. Sad to see.
Everyone says it is sad but why
@bs2000two Well we all know he's only doing it because financially he's in a bad way. I don't think its good for anyone's health to be taking punches to the head at 55 years old. Taking punches to the head for 40 years is going to take it's toll.
@@scottthompson3019Jist because he’s fighting doesn’t mean he’s financially in bad shape. He’s an athlete and wants to keep competing.
Both brilliant fighters in their day
Calzaghe gets zero respect. We can all speculate as to why but it’s true.
It's pretty easy to see why Calzaghe will fade away into total obscurity. The same can't be said for Hopkins or Jones...
@@sizzlechestmcmurphy4365the only reason is because you Americans love to downplay the british boxing pedigree and put your own fighters on a pedi stool as is clearly proven by the bias in this video. Joe beat both of em at the end of the day.
It's the same reason Andre Ward isn't mentioned amongst the greats it's because neither of them have big name defeats on their resume. They are both victim of the era they came up in it is what it is.
Calzaghe definitely Underrated it would be bad ass to see prime roy and prime Calzaghe
Around this time period boxing was in a good place ,i remember pavlik beating taylor ,hopkins was the underdog and beat pavlik, mayeather was in his prime and so was pacquiao, cotto was doing his thing and calzaghe was doing his thing and retired undefeated.
Yes. Roy was shot by that fight.
Would love to see you do a video on Oscar De La Hoya versus Tito Trinidad.
Man, me too!
Good morning as much as l love Roy Joe and Collins were always calling him out. Agreed they were both on the slide. Joe less than Roy. However Joe won the fight and let us just respect Joe for what he accomplished.
Jones hit him so nice at 5:02 I think he got Mario coins or something.
Joe under-rated
Even though they were both humiliated by Joe, you have to give credit to Jones & Hopkins for eventually finding the courage to step up & face the ultimate test.
Ultimate test? Gtfoh
If the Welsh dude had some horsepower behind his speed and accuracy, he'd beat a lot of heavyweights
he damaged his hands and was often fighting injured
Great video !
Joe turned the super middleweight into something .. Legend ..
No disrespect to Calzaghe but Roy was far past his prime when Joe fought him.
You mean roid Jones jr was off the juice when they fought
@@abdulwakeel5598nah he had it right at first, roy was close to 40 this fight and that weight cut after ruiz really sped up his decline
@@reallyunderstandmetho my guy Roy was on the roids so I dnt care about what you're talking about
They were the same age 😅
@@abdulwakeel5598 he tested positive once, and so did his opponent richard hall. guess what the result of the fight was?
😂😂😂😂😂 Good shit
Calzaghe is a “showboating specialist?” Please! Roy was the showboat king & he could back it up. Calzaghe has never had the respect he deserved. In this fight, he out-Jonesed Jones. If Calzaghe was American, we’d never hear the end of how great he was! They would be talking about him the way they talk about Ray Leonard or Marciano.
It's funny you say that because I actually wanted my title to be "when Calzaghe out-jonesed jones" but I felt the masses just wouldn't understand it. also I'm a big calzaghe fan. me and my grandad who's welsh may I add, would watch every calzaghe fight together and he'd tell me stories about Tommy Farr, good times!
Good times indeed. The best of times. I may be a little biased, I live in Newbridge Wales where, as I’m sure you know, Calzaghe lives. Everyone round here likes to try & convince anyone who’ll listen that he’s their neighbour 😂.
When you start thinking who what got what before da fight
Both Jones and Hopkins were diminished fighters when they fought Calzaghe. He was a great fighter, but don't try to gauge his greatness by fights he had with two hall-of-famers well past their primes. It disrespects all three.
So Joe beat up an old Jones. Good job, but no cookie. 😂
They are the same age 😂 what are you on about hahaa
@@armandomorelos2500 no they are not and a google search proves that. wtf are you on about?
Calzaghe is one of the most underrated boxers of all time. He was like a white Sugar Ray Leonard who I personally believe was the Greatest of all pound for pound.
Loved Calzaghe but Jones may be the best boxer I’ve ever seen
Like holmes vs ALI
Jones would never have beaten Calzaghe. His punch output was unmatched. Jones did not like applied pressure. In Calzhaghe’s case, an onslaught you can’t get away from.
Everyone pumped him up after beat wack ass Jeff lacy
Roy would’ve destroyed him 10 years before
Miss you Max Kellerman !!
Why the hell does Mayweather glorify his undefeated career and act like he the only fighter to retire on top and undefeated where this guy did the same just wanted to mention that, but Roy Jones Jr will always be P4P GOAT
Mayweather wouldn't have retired undefeated if he fought the best during the 80's and 90's and he always seemed to fight boxers past their best or not at their best.
Joe gave Roy a good old fashioned boxing lesson!
If Roy was in his prime, that first round would have been the last round for Calzaghe.
😂
90s RJ would’ve won by the 6th round 💪🏽
Don’t think so
@@lestercombs1871you don’t watch boxing that’s why
I like Roy jokes more than Hopkins and calzage. Like to watch. But I don’t like this narrative that jones was too old to fight them because he hadn’t progressed his basic skills when he feel out of his athletic prime, while these guys had while they were the same age or older. But yet jones gets a pass. Odd double standard just jones was more spectacular and bankable
Lol. Roy waa 40 and Bhop was 43. Borh way past their primes when then fought Joe. No body will even put Joe's name in the same sentence with these two fighters. Roy Jones was a one of a kind from.25-33yrs old. The lost to Tarver was the end for Roy.
Roy jones would knock calzagh out if this fight happened in their primes
How to beat the greatest in boxing become a southpaw
Lol. People talking. ROY WAS SO SO PASSED IT by this point. It's like how people take pride in beating Antonio barrera past his prime. 😂it's so desperate😂
Roy Jones did this to his opponents. He deserved the same back. I like him now, but he was way too cocky.
Unsubstantiated rumors still haunt Joe's legacy
What about roid Jones jr career?
you're lying 😂
Jones was roided his whole career
@@armandomorelos2500 you got proof
No you haven't
Awww poor baby mad
This should have been Jones' last fight. Sadly it wasn't and he took some awful needless punishment.
I often ponder what might have been if Roy had retired after his first fight with Tarver. People would be talking about him as if he was born on another planet!
@@BoxingAfterDarkironically guys like that who never really dodged a challenge are also the same guys who don’t know when, or even how, to hang em up. Evander comes to mind. Toney. Barkley. Ali. Duran. The list goes on. What made them formidable is the same stuff that kept them going
So true. and funny enough, most of them guys are my favourite fighters of all time! Sadly I feel most of the time, Money is the main motivator due to bad spending in their prime years!
He should have retired after beating john ruiz for the heavyweight title. He never should have went back to the light heavyweight division
He should have retired after the Ruiz fight. If he had, he'd be in the talks for P4P greatness.
Look Joe Calzhage is arguably the best Supper middle weight of all time. But through no fault of his own his legacy will never be compared to that of Roy Jones, Bernard Hopkins or james toney. Idk why but based of the researxh ive done it was Joes team that didnt allow the fights to happen when those boys were in their respective primes. I dont fault Joe for that The only guy i wouldve given Calzaghe a shot to beat in their prime is Hopkins jjst due to the style match up. James Toney too slick and too much power. Roy too much of everything. Speed, Power in both hands, reflexes. Roy In his prime looked like a god amongst men. Sad that we didnt getbthose fughts when we shouldve.
And no even knows who calzaghe is?
nonsense 😂😂😂😂
Bullshit. Any boxing fan who truly knows boxing know who Joe was.
Jones fought far too long.
Yep, he did
Calzaghe no power
JC stayed in Europe fighting his cousins until Bernard and Roy weathered many battles and then decides he wants to challenge them 🤣
No disrespect but Calzaghe could beat prime Jones Jr or anyone in the world in his day, superb boxer and genuine legend, shut up marks 😂😂😂😂😢😢
🤣🤣🤣
Lmbo
Prime jones would of beat calzaghe. And, i much as i respect joe, that show boating was tacky as hell
Calzaghe met Roy well past his prime. I wish Calzaghe had been 10yrs older
ars They are only three and
Difference in Age is only 3 years
What? They are like 2 years apart lmao
@armandomorelos2500 I guess I put prime Roy in a special elite category. I think most fans of the sport recognize his talents and style as unique and a once in a lifetime type thing. I don't think you can teach anyone to fight like he did. He was like ichiro was to hitting In baseball
Tyson and Jones are the best EVER!!!
Never liked pillow hands Joe
He beat roid Jones jr was tho
@@abdulwakeel5598Jones Jr was 137 years old in that fight
because he beat those fighters?
@ghostjason878 nah, more like fighting the greats way past their primes, everyone knows a prime jones eats him alive
@@Gustavo__157 keep coping bud roy got his ass whooped by an out of prime joe easily. dude would get manhandled by joe and kod like tarver did to him in their primes
Calzaghe strike rounds by pitty pat punches. Jones was way past his prime.
He barely beat a past prime Hopkins via split decision and Jones had been KOed 2x s
A split decision even though Joe was forced to chase him around the ring for 12 rounds. Hopkins wasn’t interested in engaging in a more open fight, as he knew full well he’d get his ass handed to him if he did - hometown officiating at it worst.
you should change the title to “when joe confronted roy” 💀💀, cus roy didn’t confront joe for shit 💀💀
Joe didn't fight anyone in their prime. So NO he's not an all time great to me.
When fighters camp out at 1 weight, fine. And beat anyone who has climbed I. Weight? Fine. No let's see u climb in weight. Not so fun when the rabbit has a gun.
Let’s not pretend he actually beat Hopkins. Jones Jr in his prime would’ve destroyed Calzaghe
keep coping
How’s the copium??
Correct. Calslappy was a tomato can.
@@user-ft6wo8rs5gcalling the guy a tomato can is crazy. Considering he beat RJJ, Hopkins, and Jeff Lacy. Sure RJJ Wasser his beset that RJJ woulda beat other guys in that division still, plus Hopkins‘s prime was like his 40s-50s 😂
@kiboma4209 Hopkins was robbed and Prime Jones mops Calslappy in 1 maybe 2 rounds.
Roy?Booooooooooooooooo
Jones was way past his best nearly 40 years old
They are the same age
@@armandomorelos2500 Are you slow?

Another of Roy's pointless fights post-prime. He was 5 years past his best! 40 years old! Benn, Eubank, Collins, Calzaghe all ducked him in the 90s. RJJ would've destroyed them all.
Joe was better than jones in his prime and as a human IMO. The man needed a good humbling exactly the way he did everyone else. Irony.
Prime calzaghe is better than a prime jones?
@@GDCDGC I think so.
Comedy time🤣🤣🤣
Why didn't Colzaghe recieve the same amount of attention as Mayweather?
He fought a grand total of four times outside of the UK in his 46 fights. His resume is paper-thin at absolute best.
