    Norrie was a high-level cricket player as a teenager - that's probably had a fair influence on how he hits that backhand.

    I was at Indian Wells this weekend and had the opportunity to watch the majority of the Norrie vs Sonego match.
    What I was able to take away from this match in regards to Norrie and his unorthodox backhand is that it's not so much that topspin, mechanics or even the power of his strokes, but rather that he kept placing his returns even on Sonego's first serves in very uncomfortable positions that never allowed Sonego to get into a rally or even get the opportunity to rip the ball.
    Sonego was hardly ever at a position where he could dictate points and it was never because Norrie overpowering him, it was because Norrie was consistently hitting balls back low, deep and it weird angles. It was strange and sort of a boring match to watch. It could be that Sonego was particularly inconsistent that day, but it felt like it was Norrie's doing that the rallies were short.

    I took a few lessons from the coach at Norrie's old club in NZ, I'm also a leftie. Always felt like he wanted me to have my right hand on the 2HBH really far around on the grip, it basically forced my arms to lock. I have no idea how much influence he had on Norrie's backhand, but always found it interesting that one specific piece of advice had me mimicking the Norrie backhand quite quickly. Felt awkward but the results were solid!

    I love this, norries backhand is very much his own, his backhand is intuitive haha, and in both ways he works it into his game and gets it working for him to answer his opponents too!

    Excellent analysis! I saw Norrie live (from very good seats) 3 years ago but since I did not yet change from 1h bh to a 2h bh at that time, I did not pay attention to his backhand. Which tells you that not only one cannot remember more than 2 things in practice; a person has a hard time paying attention to more than 2 things when watching pro players.

    This is why I don’t understand people who find his game boring, he has very interesting strokes and the difference in spin between his backhand/forhand leads to interesting rallies

    If you have bad technique but hit the middle of the sweet spot and have the racket face at the correct angle every time... it's good technique!
    IMO his backhand looks lower powered but has little spin, so he gets ball speed and a low bounce, and it probably takes less energy to hit as well.

  • @Nessaj87

    I think you could have talked a bit about how his playstyle is unique, since he is maybe the player with the most extreme difference between FH-BH, from heavy topspin forehand to such a flat 2h backhand. I try to do similar with my game - heavy topspin FH and really flat 2h BH, but I am not copying that 2h bh technique to his extreme measures. Any thoughts on how opponents would find this gamestyle difficult?

    On Point w/ Norries backhand. I remember when people were mocking about Edberg's and Noahs forehand back in the day. In fact they were excellent otherwise they would not have become Top 10 players/grand slam champions. Pozdrav Alex

    yep totally agree its not about optics, but without a lag its super hard to have a lot of top spin - no top spin --> more risky play more errors

    You failed to mention the MAIN reason Norrie can hit his backhand the way he does - he's RIGHT-HANDED. This is why he can "muscle" the ball the way he does using that right hand and arm.
    This also explains why he's a little unorthodox on the forehand and serve. He's using his non-dominant hand on those.

    What do you think about Shelton's return points won stats - just ahead of Eubanks as the lowest in the Top 50 in 2023? Seeing as it's historically very difficult to improve that return stat do you see this as a significant issue for him to progress further?

    The real question is how much better would Norries backhand be if he had a more conventional two hander? All of his positive attributes are being used just to compensate for an unconventional technique and bring it up to par. In an alternate universe there’s a Norrie who has the best two hander on tour because he listened to his junior coaches and all of his talent went to excelling rather than just treading water in the backhand side.

    The refutation of Norrie having a "weak backhand" makes a lot of sense, just like it makes sense to not trying to adopt it as a recreational player and go for proper fundamentals instead to create effortless power, modelling your 2HB after Djokovic, Zverev or - I would argue - Korda. Now I have one remark: I think "optics" is not a good equivalent to "fundamentals". Optics equate to stylistic aspects, which you have always differentiated from fundamentals. Norrie's 2HB is not just optically/stylistically "bad", it IS lacking fundamentals, which are however compensated for by the other factors as you mention. You are confusing us now by suggesting that fundamentals are just optics.

    • @IntuitiveTennis
      @IntuitiveTennis  2 місяці тому +1

      You are making up your own assumptions, maybe that’s why it’s confusing. Optics can involve fundamentals and style. Optics is a term I use to describe how a stroke looks. Fundamentals and style require a more in-depth analysis. When I look at a stroke in real time, I look at optics. It can reveal some elements of style vs fundamentals, however in-depth analysis is always necessary to see the full picture.

  • @RandallEike
    @RandallEike 2 місяці тому

    You are basically saying Norrie's backhand form is bad and would lead to a lack of power AND control, but he overcomes this with his other elite attributes. This is wrong. His swing is short and compact, which means it takes less time and has less moving parts. This leads to more control and consistency, likely at the expense of power. He makes up for this power deficiency by hitting exceptionally flat. A more traditional backhand has a longer backswing and requires better timing.
