Hi - speed in the dark is just asking for trouble - I have done it myself … as a young man -
Returning with goodies for the friends . Just lucky , I suppose . 😅

That seems a callous comment comment from the DEP rep that “their navigation equipment should be working”. The channel should be marked with lighted buoys that guide a boater by traditional methods. Not everyone has thousands of dollars worth of navigation equipment, it should be navigable by traditional methods I.e. compass and open eyes. GPS is a luxury not a necessity. Authorities need to do their job and make these basic navigation aids are available and working.

Actually there's a lighted buoy marking the center of the entrance to the breakwaters and the channel. In addition, the owner/pilot of the boat was familiar with the entrance to the river and failed to slow his speed as well as use his spotlights to scan the area. It's clear this accident was a result of reckless operation.

Navigational aids don’t work if you fall asleep!

I was surprised to learn that no one was wearing a life jacket. Whenever I have piloted a boat in the past, I always insisted my passemgers wear life jackets.

@@bbrcummins1984 respectfully, wrong. A and operator caused this accident. Poor judgement by several people on this boat caused this accident. A closed bottle stays closed until someone open its and drinks the contents. 9 people on board more than one SHOULD should have been familiar with where they were going, more than one should have been concerned with the pilots ability to navigate AT NIGHT. It’s an open cockpit boat EVERYONE has a clear view of where they were going. This was pilot/ passenger error through and through. Time will tell when the stories come out, but, most likely everyone is lawyering up (survivors healing up).
