I’m southeast Asian and my family celebrates the Mid Autumn Festival and I’m familiar with the story behind it. There are many different versions but the gist of it is that two lovers from heaven are cast out of heaven and they adapt to live a quiet mortal farming life. But then the husband tries to get an immortal elixir to make his wife happy and get back to heaven. He is only able to get enough for only one person to become a god again so the wife is like “I don’t want to leave you behind and I don’t want you to leave me behind. Let’s us think about this later.” And then a bad man tries to steal the immortal elixir and then the wife drinks it out of sacrifice. The wife becomes a goddess but since heaven still doesn’t like her, she makes a home on the moon. The husband is heartbroken by the separation and makes her moon cakes as offerings. It’s a really sweet story and I think it really suits HuaLian well. I’m dying to know if something like this exists.
