Summer pruning our peppers

  • The greenhouse is very full and messy with all the tomato plants, pepper plants, aubergine and herbs, so it's time to do a little maintenance and a little pruning on my pepper plants.
Summer pruning is very different from the "topping" of peppers we do back in early spring, instead, this is about thinning the plant out and focusing on a productive healthy plant.

I wanted to share a tip I recently heard for warding off slugs. So, they are making my hostas look terrible. I was told to put broken egg shells all around the plants. The sharp edges are not slug proof, but it's a good deterrent. It should help your strawberries, which you could freeze for winter salads or my favorite strawberry rhubarb pie. Love your channel and I learn a lot. Thanks, Annie

I wasn’t gonna bother. But I can see now why I should. So I will do it. And I will check that there is air flow as that’s what’s really needed. I’m glad you said about if it has fruit sometimes you have to remove for the long term. And I’m gonna make sure I remember that and that it’s what’s best for the plant.
    Thanks Eli for your support.

Great tutorial. It's hard to sacrifice potential fruit but worth it in the long run. I'm afraid I went a bit 'Edward Scissorhands' on my outdoor tomatoes the other night. They had grown into triffids, with so many side shoots (myownfault) that I must have had a small compost bin's worth of cuttings. But they're upright now, rather than trying to crawl across the lawn. I've had loads of sun scorching on my pepper and chilli plants too. In fact, I lost the first flush of flowers on some of the early varieties due to the heatwave. I'm learning a lot. I didn't think chillies would mind the heat. Apparently, they're just as picky as everything else.

Very helpful to see, especially because your plants look so healthy and productive. Once it stops raining, I think my poblano peppers will get a little "tidying up" so I can support the loaded side branches better without the leaves and twigs getting in the way. After overwintering, the plants espalier'd themselves....lots of production on sideway growing branches; challenge to support. I wonder how many years I can keep pepper plants going....

Thank you for the very helpful video.
I live in Toronto, Canada, by the way. I am used to growing tomatoes and beans each year, along with others veggies, etc. with mixed results.
I don't usually have much success with peppers, but this year, each pepper plant has put out soooo many tiny fruit and blossoms! I'm ready to go ahead with pruning, but I'd like your advice about picking off blossoms and/or fruits that seem like too many. How many is too many?
For example, one plant with long peppers has 1 large fruit on it, 2 small fruits and 12 fruit buds or flowers on it. The plant itself is about 2 feet tall and grows in a 12 inch (diameter) pot.
