  • Growing lots of tomatoes starts with a simple choice and you may not even have considered it. There are so many weird and wonderful tomato varieties out there, but do you consider how they might grow in your garden or how they might meet your needs before you buy seeds? Do you think how many days that tomato plant will take to mature and produce fruit, does your garden have a long enough growing season? What about how the colour of those exciting new heirloom varieties will affect how you use the tomatoes? There are lots to think about so let's start with these 4 simple tips.

    Every year I promise myself I'll grow a variety, a couple cherry or grape sized, a couple early salad size, a paste, a couple of heirlooms, at least one giant. I have all kinds of plans for making sure I have both determinate and indeterminate, early, mid and late producers, and at least one that isn't red for a splash of interest amongst all the red.
    For years I've managed to not end up with any of that. One year I ended up with all cherry, grape, and current sized tomatoes because that's all I planted. Another year it was all great big pound or more finally ready to start harvesting at end very end of the season. Several years ago when we were living in a second for apartment and I didn't have lots of space for preserving I o only managed to grow paste tomatoes 2 years in a row.
    Part of the problem is the ADHD, I focus on wanting to grow, but skip the what makes sense part. The other part of the problem was I was under the impression that seeds were only good for 1 year. I don't know how I got that in my head, but it was there, so I'd start all over every late winter and spring picking out and ordering new seeds.
    About the time I learned about winter sowing in plastic milk jugs I had the mind blowing fact that era don't expire after just one year. I no longer toss seed packets out at the end of the season.
    Since then I've done slightly better at having some variety, but I still struggle with a mix of determinate and indeterminate, and having early,mid and late varieties.
    Last summer the results were humorous as I really really meant to plant mostly determinate varieties as we were moving across town and I wanted to bring as much as possible with us so.planted mostly in containers. Unfortunately I only planted indeterminate varies. They were a mess and super awkward to move! Lol

    Tomatoes are an absolute staple in my household. This year we will be growing (Note: in USDA Zone 7B) the following varieties: Roma VF, Early Girl, Big Rainbow, Cherokee Purple, Sungold Cherry, Supersweet 100, German Johnson, Pink Brandywine, Mortgage Lifter, Super Sauce Hybrid, Brad's Atomic Grape, Yellow Pear, and Dr. Wyche's. And you were correct: sauce tomatoes are classified as Paste tomatoes in the US because they are the best for making stuff like spaghetti sauce. I make and can dozens and dozens of jars of tomato sauce every year.

    Oh tomatoes how much I love you. I’ve got lots of new varieties to try this year. Last year i had a big learning curve as i grew a few tomatoes in a bed with sunflowers. They grew slowly and didn’t vine and I learnt later on that sunflowers inhibit growth around them and it was evident so won’t make that mistake again

      Great to know. We had a lot of volunteer sunflowers and one was in a potato hill. I didn’t get a lot from that hill.

    I had an abundance of yellow pear tomatoes so I froze them in baggies. Dump a sandwich bag worth with olive oil, garlic and Parmesan in a pan, heat and dump on pasta - delicious in the winter to remember summer menus.

    I had great luck growing 24 paste tomato plants last year, most in buckets. I grew 18 San Marziano plants from seed because all plants were sold out by early May. Six plants were Amish paste purchased plants by mail for same reason. Both were excellent sauce tomatoes-at least the ones my ground hog (woodchuck) didn't eat. Rascal. Sun Gold and Sun sweet are excellent yellow cherry tomatoes that were a favorite of the chipmunks. Yes, I was allowed some but even fencing and tomato cages with netting were no deterrent. I grew other, less memorable tomatoes like Earlt Girl, heirloom purple Cherokee, and grape tomatoes but paste and yellow cherry are my favorites.
    I hope to get my share of the produce this year.

    I grow two types of tomatoes simply because my mom grew them when I was a child and I have loved them since childhood. Now I grow them for my children. Beef steak tomato’s and yellow pear tomatoes.

    Zone 3 in northern Canada. Plan on 48 varieties this year. One or two of each. The search for the favourites.

    Fab vid. This is my first year with a poly tunnel so first stab at growing tomatoes properly. I always got them to fruit but, either wind took my grow tent prior to them ripening, or, they didn't ripe in time for the season ending so was left with green tomatoes. Hoping tje poly tunnel will make a difference and I'm going to purchase a quad grow. Not sure which varieties yet, needs to be hardy and not too long to mature. Exciting stuff. Definite want a beef steak, cherry and a plum variety. Toms run out so quickly up here in our supermarket so growing our own will be a game changer. Will tune in tm xx

    Growing this year:
    Black krim. Zapotec. Mushroom basket.
    Prairie fire ( brix rating: 10). Pineapple.
    Orange peach (golf ball, size fuzzy, marmalade and pie alternative)
    Yellow and orange currant tomato.
    Maybe Marzano paste

    I just grew nine different ones last year and picked my favourites 🤣 Kate was looking awful guilty there 😂 I'm not done trying different varieties, though. I'm already compiling my wish list for next year.

      @@eliandkate I think you just need to try until you find the ones you prefer. What I like isn't going to be what everyone else likes. It's definitely an experiment. But the kind that ends in success no matter what - like you said - nothing beats a homegrown tomato 😁

      @@robinscontainergarden that is so true. The variety that works and tastes well for one garden may not be the same in another. Overwatering can deplete the great taste in most.

    The two I always plant are Pineapple and chocolate cherry. The pineapple start with big beefsteak in the beginning then finish the year with slicer size. I've had plants over 10 ft tall!

    This is my 3rd year gardening and I have added complexity each year. I am growing regal and sunrise for paste tomatoes, sungold, little birdy yellow canary and Candyland red for cherries, and trying pineapple for a beefsteak this year. I like the sweeter tomatoes so aiming for lighter colors.

    If you're growing in a community garden that is open to the public (where theft is a possibility), you might want to pick varieties that look a little odd. When I grew in a CG, people growing nice red tomatoes that looked like the ones in the grocery store had them stolen all the time. I had Black Krim tomatoes, which are delicious and sweet, but ripen a black green streaky look. No one touched them.😄

    But! I did use my yellow tomatoes and they turned into a gorgeous sunshine colored sauce! But I am definitely going for more reds this year lol.

    This year I am once again growing Sun Gold cherry, Siletz (a slicer bred in Oregon for their cool summers; will plant out early here), Mountain Magic (2” round red), Striped German (beefsteak heirloom), plain old Roma, and Principe Borghese (prolific, large grape size which I dry in my dehydrator).
    New ones this year are 3 Dwarf Tomato Project varieties- Dwarf Eagle Smiley (cherry), Loxton Lad, and Dwarf Gloria’s Treat. I’m growing them to see if they will perform better during our weeks of high heat and humidity. Since they will max out at 4 feet tall, I should be able to cover them with shade cloth during July and August (unlike tomatoes listed above that grow more than 6 feet tall here). I purchased my Dwarf Tomato Project seeds from Victory Seeds in the US, but I know there are suppliers in Australia and in either the UK or EU. The project is a worldwide collaboration of growers to produce stable dwarf varieties whose seed can be saved.

      Ooo, so exciting! I bought 4 dwarf varieties this year, too(I think from the same place). I already got carried away and planted a few, and so far, I've had 100% germination! (I got a slicer "Awesome" and cherry "Eagle smiley" in yellow, and a slicer "Stoney Brook Heart" & cherry "Johnson's" that are red)

    Sometimes gardening enthusiasm gets the best of us - I have been known to grow as many as 24 different varieties in a single season (2 plants of each type) - and in 7 years have not grown the same one twice - not that many are not deserving of a regrow but there are so many available to sample - this year a few new sauce/paste type are on my radar - specifically Andean, Jersey Devil, and Gilbertie that I will include among some heirloom beefsteak types - so exciting! ... haha

    Hello from Southern California,
    I grow two different paste tomatoes, Amish Paste and Pink Oxheart I prefer these to the Roma tomatoes they are a lot larger and taste great. I grow over 20 varieties of tomatoes. Most of what I grow are heirloom and most are around 80-90 days, so not sure they would be ideal for you. Here are my top five, Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, Mortgage Lifter, Carbon, Black Beauty.

      Do you know of a great tasting grape tomato. Thought I would try grape because I’ve heard few crack with rain storms. Ours split even after we picked. I have a couple from Baker Creek. Hoping for heirloom varieties of, paste, slicer and cherry/grape to save seed.
      I had Alpaca, Super Paste and San Marzanos last year for paste and wasn’t impressed with flavor over slicers.
      We had an oxheart in 2012. It was a drought year and we just let it do it’s thing with no staking and they were delicious. Bought at local market so don’t know variety and I see several oxhearts on market now. Thanks.

    I love growing different heritage tomatoes. My favorites have to be the refreshing Barry's Crazy Cherry, indigo blue beauty, and pink brandywine. Excellent flavours 🍅

    I had a white tomato last year, which I had really looked forward to, as it
    got munched by slugs the year before. Turmes out I didn't like it much - no acid and almost no flavour.Dumped it in sauces, it is definetly off my list for this year!

    Don’t know if you have them there but the pink Brandywine is my all time favorite! Nothing else even compares, but I try different ones every year. John’s one stead fast rule of gardening is if I’m alive and gardening then there’s going to be pink Brandywine in it!!!

      @@eliandkate They were supposed to be extinct but were found on an Amish farm in Pennsylvania. I hope spellcheck lets this come out right Sudeth family still had them. My mother delivered meals on wheels and one lady’s granddaughter gave her a six pack. I had been hearing that they were coming for a couple of weeks one spring. Foolish me what’s so special about the ugly tomatoes,they looked like potato plants,well I was the world’s champion fool I learned. They were never and won’t take shipping and will tend to crack if they get too much water but if you want flavor 😍. They were just made to have flavor out of this world. You will see red,yellow and black but the pink is the true one. The other colors are crosses to try and get one they can ship to stores 😖😭. Old saying if it ain’t broke don’t fix it applies!

      @@eliandkate thought I had replied but don’t see it so if I did ignore this. My mother had a meals on wheels route and a lady on its granddaughter gave her a six pack one spring,I had heard they were coming. It was not love at first sight the leafs looked like a potato plant no serration ( foolish me I was the world’s champion fool). They were never grown to take rough treatment and shipping to stores, the original variety pink Brandywine or hoping spellcheck doesn’t mess this up Sudeth after the Amish farm they were found to still exist on. They have been crossed with red,yellow and black varieties to try to improve them ( if it ain’t broke don’t fix it). They won’t take boxing and shipping and will crack if getting to much water but they ( pink) have flavor that’s unmatched. They win most flavor tests they are entered into. I find them to be a very hardy plant,if they weren’t they would have never survived on an Amish farm as they still use traditional farming methods and don’t keep anything around that doesn’t pay for itself! Try them out I think you’ll like them!

      @@eliandkate try them, I gave some plants to a friend that I help on his hog farm and his daughter that works for the country soil and water conservation district has all ready asked if they will be getting more plants! My answer is if I’m alive my motto is pink Brandywine for everyone!

    I am obsessed with tomatoes. I grow far too many varieties- just one plant of the each to get maximum varieties.
    Interesting you mentioned loving Indigo Rose. I grew it last year I didn’t think much of it. Lacked flavour. It was the same for other tomatoes that people love such as indigo blue berries, yellow pear and black Krim. It might have an issue with growing them in a brand new Huglukulture bed and the dry summer with had.

    I'm growing Sungold again for sure, it was one of your videos a couple years back that you said about them, so I tried them last year and they were the absolute best cherry toms I've tried so far! I quite liked Black Cherry too and Suncherry Premium always do really well.
    I also tried out 'Big Mama', which are a massive roma style tomato used for sauces. I really liked those, although I did have quite a few get blossom end rot (Bare in mind all my tomatoes are pot-grown and we had that really severe hot weather (42C) and drought for months down here) but I still managed to harvest a good amount and they have really nice, firm skins they did not split at all and were really easy to peel when roasted.
    I haven't bought any more of those (I don't think) but I did put an order in last year for a wodge of seeds for this year, but I can't remember the ones I got, I will have to sort through them soon!

    I felt that feeling when you looked out the window. Ugh, more winter.
    I so get the color thing. I’ve seen all the tomato varieties and different colors as well as carrots, beets these days. Now I know I can handle beets and cannot being traditional colors and they taste good. I have to admit I’m skeptical if I will feel the same about tomatoes. I will find out this year as we are trying several varieties of slicers, paste and cherry/grape tomatoes.
    Yes, the meaty roma type tomatoes we call paste generally in U.S. they are generally drier to avoid so much reduction of water when canning. So far I prefer the slicers for canning because when I opened this years canned tomatoes I didn’t get that summertime aroma😏. Those were San Marzanos, Super Paste and Alpacas. They just didn’t have the flavor, but alpacas were the winner on meat and weight. Marzanos were too small.
    Now coming to the idea of biting into a black tomato or purple has left me with uneasy thoughts coming from a nightshade family😅. Like you, I wonder how that affects the Yum factor. Some like the dark color they turn a sauce, they feel it looks richer. I never was a fan of green tomatoes and we tried white currant cherries last year and even though extremely sweet they practically rotted before you could get them in the house.
    I was surprised you have only an 85 day growing season. Ours in Z5a WIsconsin is about 135 they say.
    So I was ordering bare root for mini orchard-plums, peach, honey berries, filberts and of course a rose or 2 as I couldn’t resist the colors and fragrance and after 10 years I figured out a problem with my shrub rose I brought from previous property so now feel confident to get a couple more. I have statues from parents and decided to make a courtyard with yellow, purple, white theme. A lot of work, but I think we will enjoy it. However, I thought I had all my seeds until we had supper and we were chewing snow pea strings-quick add STRINGLESS PEAS😂🤣. And they sent me a couple trial packs of seeds in which one is Amish Gold Slicer from Jungs Seed our local supplier. It will be fun to try that along with the Amish Paste tomato.
    I’m on a quest for the perfect cherry/grape tomato. There is not much offered in heirloom that I know of yet, but we will try Brad’s Atomic Grape and A Grappoli D’Inverno from Baker Creek. Now Atomic has a multitude of colors and I’m sure the picture has to be enhanced, but we’ll see 🤪. Then there is the Black Krim everyone raves about, but I fell for that when I tried San Marzanos. A black cherry is also on the list. The colored ones I may find it difficult to check ripeness as others have noted. I’m looking for a grape tomato as I’ve heard less splitting and I do have a hybrid called sweetheart. Hope I hit one I like and preferably one I can keep seeds from as I’m hoping to find my mainstays for slicer, paste and cherry/grape tomatoes.
    We are trying several other slicers like the WIsconsin 55 and I should get the WIsconsin Chief as well and make a state theme out of this just like the Amish series ☺️. Others on list are Abe Lincoln, Rose, Red Brandywine, Delicious, Gilbertie, Moneymaker and a basic beefsteak.
    Hope I hit a bullseye😂
    Look forward to meet tomorrow morning at 10a.m. for us in U.S. (4 p.m. Scotland) with Gardener Scott. It appears the theme will be Tomatoes!

    My favorite to eat fresh that I grow is the kelloggs breakfast tomato.
    But if I have to have supermarket tomatoes I only grab the romas because everything else seems too tart and watery. I even use the romas for my sandwiches and burgers.
    But nothing beats a home grown ripe kelloggs breakfast tomato 🤩

      So hear you there. Most mushy store tomatoes are hydroponically grown. If I have to, yes, the romas I get.

      @In the Garden with Eli and Kate it is a very sweet one, so maybe not for everyone. It's similar to sungold sweetness in taste. But it's a multi flower that grows more shapely tomatoes(think heirloom with wide rib bumps, better for cutting chunks for salad than trying to make circular slices 😅 but delicious withjust a sprinkle of sea salt!)

    With a friend we will have around 24 tomato plants this year. Few we grew already last year, but most are new. We're looking for tomatoes which fits best to our area - we don't have a greenhouse - and we like to eat. After some years we expect to have the ones we like grow every year :-)

    Amazing amazing amazing info as always. As a newbie I was so excited to grow Bumble Bee (striped) cherry tomatoes. I also grew Sungolds. I will never grow the striped again. They were flavourless next to the Sungolds. Their skins are also tough/thicker than the Sungolds. They look purdy but that's it unfortunately. My fun tomato for this year is purely based on Jessie (Plot 37) raving about Black Trifele. Also I'm going to grow 2 or 3 different paste/sauce tomatoes to try and get some levels of flavour in my pasta sauce. See you over on Gardener Scott's 👍🏻

      I am concerned about tough skins also on new cherry/grape varieties I will be trying. There is not much choice in a heirloom grape tomato. Looking for flavor, production and No splitting when it rains.

      @@dustyflats3832 Esterina is a winner for me as well. Thin skin, pure yellow, sweet but not the tang of the Sungold. Has the mouth feel of a grape. Zero splitting.

    I'm blessed with a long growing season in 5b south of Chicago. So I can grow pretty much everything. Tomatoes were in my first garden, Early Girl, and they were prolific. But it was a hybrid seedlings (Im not totally against hybrids) that the big box store sold. I am big into seed saving where I can. Since then I have been looking for the best varieties for us. I have room for 20 or so tomato plants, and like to have 4 varieties. So far Ace 55 (got the first ones as a free seed packet in an order), Super Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes (hybrid but super prolific), Black Brandywine, are the favorites, This year I am trying Cherokee purple as the 4th variety.
    Planing is something that starts in December for me, looking for seerds to buy in Jan. Then a garden layout that changes every year. This year I am going to try the color coded planting plan from one of your video's.

      @@eliandkate I have a lot of room, about 25x100 feet. But thats after 4 yearly expansions., taking more backyard each time. But I am at the limit my. We need room for the dogs to be outside. I started on my patio with 11 five gallon bucket sip's.

    Yeah, you'd find varieties like San Marzano or Roma classified as Sauce/Paste tomatoes. I never realized that wasn't a more universal thing. In my garden, we have about a ~100-day growing season, but it often has early or late starts and ends because I live near the Rocky Mountain range. Having snow on Mother's day (which is the second Sunday in May here, not March) has happened a bit too often. Anyhow, I like a variety of tomatoes. San Marzanos are a 100% must-have.. about 4-6 plants. Then I'll do 4 or 5 types of cherries, including the Sun Gold. And I'll do a mix of larger slicing/beefsteak types including Black Krim, Purple Cherokee, Orange Jazz, and Green Zebra. I like my many colors. We still have a lot of time until I start tomato seeds (about 2 months), but I am planning the slower things like onions and those which need stratification. Also, we have a few inches of snow on the ground .. for the last month. And it won't be melting away anytime soon.

    Gonna be honest, your channel is growing on me (no small pun intended). Thank you for the videos! Been slowly watching some of your older videos as well.
    My seeds are coming in tomorrow! Once I sort through what and how much I want to grow and where I'll be doing my planning. I bought from a different source this year so I hope dearly they all work out well.

    We always grow Green Zebra (for sandwiches) & Sungold (for snacking) varieties. Brandywine taste amazing but struggles in the hot hot dry summers (USA zone 9b) that we usually have. I prefer heirloom varieties usually for taste & fun colors but I'm thinking I might try some hybrids this year to see if we can find one that really thrives in our hot summers & produces a good crop for us.

    I’m growing some salad tomatoes, grape tomatoes, a couple of cherry for sure. Might throw in a few Roma types because I have seed left. My main goal is for salads/sandwiches and hopefully enough for sauce. I find using my old fashioned hand mill it doesn’t seem to matter what I type I grow it helps get all the good flesh out and majority of seeds. A nice simmer brings it to sauce consistency that works. And even from frozen I still think it tastes like summer.
    That said I hate to admit I’m not totally a fan of tomatoes-my hubby eats most and the rest is frozen for sauces in the winter which I do cook with a lot.
    That’s a good consideration of the colour if thinking ahead for sauce. Although I didn’t really think your examples looked bad 😊

    I am planning on 4 to 5 varieties- cour di buo- paste tomatoe, moneymaker for cherry, Black Russian- think it's a beef steak style, tigerella for salads. I do have 3 or 4 other ones but I don't have the room. I am only doing a couple each of the Tigerella and Black Russian. I am doing approx 6 each of the other two as I want lots of paste ones to do ketchup and passata. The cherry ones for dehydrating. I also want to do salsa so will be a mixture of the 3 red ones. I know one needs to be in the greenhouse but the others can be inside or out. I also need to be aware of late blight so will be growing a few in the home garden as back ups as well as the allotment. Any extra plants will be donated to the plant fayre at the allotment in May. All can be seed saved. This is an important one for me as I want to start saving seed as much as possible.

      @@eliandkate I was lucky to get an allotment about 21 months ago. The first growing season I just used a couple of existing beds last year we had grand plans and started really well but right in the middle of the growing season everything went wrong so the allotment was abandoned however New Year New start. My new raised beds are 4ft by 10 ft or 3ft by 3ft. I have 9 bigger beds and 3 smaller beds and I have a border bed between 2ft and 3 ft wide round approx half of the perimeter. 2 of the larger beds will have potatoes, one bigger bed each for peas, brassicas, tomatoes, pumpkin, climbers (barlotti beans, cucumbers) interplanted with courgettes, and celery, one bigger mixed bed of carrots, onions and beetroot, one small bed of sweetcorn, one small bed for my daughter to plant. This gives me one small and one big bed to use for overspill or if I have forgotten something on the planting plan. Other crops such as garlic and salad leaf will be interplanted as timings allow. Greenhouse will have 2 sweet pepper plants, 2 chilli plants and 5 tomatoe plants. In the border on one side I am thinking herbs, flowers and soft fruits. In the other border flowers and 2 dwarf apple trees and 2 dwarf pears. I also plan to have a small pond using an old baby bath surrounded by the herbs and flowers to encourage beneficial wildlife. I haven't factored in the house garden as we only moved in just over a year ago and the back garden is being completely redone but hope to get 2 longer beds and 3 smaller beds in although they won't be as wide as the allotment ones. It's a lot but want to grow as much as I can but have actually kept it to 6 staples, 4 good to haves and a few extras.

      @@dustyflats3832 I was given a subscription to a gardening magazine for Xmas 2 years ago so had loads of seeds but most are hybrids. Over the couple of years I am going to look at getting heirloom and heritage seeds so I can expand the seeds I can save.

    Most of them I did not know, but I made notes in the growing tme and after, that helps now. I look up new ones every year.
    Up till now I know I will grow again: mexican honey, russian big roma, fancy pear, sgn pepper and purple emerald.
    New I will try :Sibirian indoor tomato, Eiszäpfchen, Dattelwein and some others.
    Time will tell 😁 I always grow more plants and give them to friends.

      @@eliandkate the mexican honey is a great wee cherry, sweet and good till fall outdoors. Looots of fruit and ripen well in the house if piked green. Great canning and freezing. I have to look up sgt pepper and purple emareld, one of them is more acid and just wonderful for tossing in a pan with butter, garlic, onion, salt, pepper, bit chilli . Makes a great meal tossed wirh Spaghetti and cheese.

      I wouldn't say there is a specific gauge you are looking for, my first sieves were home made, but generally you are just sieving out the big pieces, twigs etc to try to make it a bit finer. This is the sieve I use, if it helps. amzn.to/3jcAH0b but go with whatever works for you

    This year i will grow 2 bushtomatoes (Tiny Tim and Vilma F1), 2 cherrytomatoes Sungold F1 and Supersweet 100 F1, 4 types of slicertomatos/beefsteak (Plan 9 from outer space yellowstriped and Marmande, San marzano and Russian big roma)...most of them in a polytunnel and some outside, just hope my season is long enough for the big tomatoes here in south-east of Norway.

    great vid, good advice ,,i did pretty well with aztec last year yellow cherry tom very small theyre described as balcony toms cos they will grow in tiny wee pots and give loads of toms , also grew the stripey tigrella kind but things like money maker were an epic fail

      Money maker has been hit or miss for a few years. Lots of folk have been complaining over the last few years about how unreliable it’s become.
      I grew it a couple of years and it was a huge disappointment whereas I’d grown it back when I started and it was great.

    I got pushed out of my greenhouse last year by fast growing indeterminate thugs that I foolishly planted in ground - too much nitrogen so they grew madly but weren't very productive. This year I'm growing dwarf determinates in pots (and maybe a couple of thugs outside - in pots to keep them under control).

    I really get put off by the dark skin of some varieties of tomatoes. On a plate with red, orange and yellow, they just look 'off' to me, or bruised. I don't know why, but they put me off. So I stick with the sunnier colours. I'll be doing Sungold this year, along with Marmande, sweet million, roma (sauces), tigrella and a few others I can't remember of the top of my head. I need to keep my kids in cherry tomatoes through the season - they eat loads.

    For all those growing Sungold , THE BEST TASTING !! try Honey comb , same taste but resists splitting . Sweet Million ,Rosella and Gardeners Delight. Last years discovery Shimmer . This years newbie will be Dalto . These will be in the greenhouse. outside will be Golden Nugget , Sweet success and Sweet Aperitif. I normally grow about a dozen verities , and after rating for taste and crop yield , drop a couple and find a 'newbie' . Last years failures was Brad Atomic and Crimson Crush ... failed the taste test.

    My family hates me because I never stop talking about growing tomatoes there could be a blizzard outside doesn't matter even made like a floorplan of my backyard and I plan which tomatoes I want in certain areas shorter plants in the front taller plants in the back even which ones are going into my giant containers and spend couple hours a week on seeds sites just to get by to spring time I think I have to move somewhere tropical so I can have longer grow seasons

    I tried growing Roma outdoors last year but was unsuccessful. They cropped heavy but never ripened, even when I tried to ripen them indoors after harvest. Need to a find a good variety that will work outdoors in SW Scotland.

      I’m not sure if you can get Amish Paste seeds there, but I’ve read a lot of reviews and comments and even today here about the great taste. That’s what I’m after in a paste is great taste. Eli is correct, the San Marzanos were a no go for me also-too small and no taste. Yes, SMarz were difficult to ripen-they are late.
