In this video we cover how to properly prune your cucumbers so that your plants receive more airflow. This will help prevent diseases such as powdery mildew and will ultimately help you to produce more cucumbers! - Навчання та стиль
66 years old, still learning. thank you, from harnett co.
PERFECT timing! My cucumbers are so wild right now
Planting cucumbers for the first time
Thanks for the video.
THANK YOU! my zucs from you zuc video took off like CRAZY a day or 2 after I created airflow AND about to plant some bee loving flowers tonight...on to the cucs! VERY EXCITED!
This is the third video I have watched on pruning vegetables by S&K. I have learned so much! Thank you. I can't wait to watch another.. so easy to understand and enjoyable!
Omg, I was just working in the garden all day and looked at my cucumbers. I'll be out there tomorrow. Thanks, timing was perfect for this video.
Planted cucumber for the first time this year. I didn't know they had suckers like tomatoes. I'll keep an eye on them now
When the suckers start, I like to wait to be sure it's not going to be blooms. But when I waited too long and see blooms on the branching sucker... oh, it gets hard to remove because... the blooms! LOL.😆
Just found your channel. Good tips, thank you.
Best cucumber pruning video out there, and I’ve looked! Thanks for the good visuals and getting straight to the point
Great information! I’m fairly new to gardening and his videos have helped me a great deal. I’m sitting on front of my cucumber plant that has taken over four tomato cages and was just trying to grab my peppers. This video just saved me from eminent take over. Thanks for helping me free up the real estate for the watermelon I told my girlfriend we shouldn’t plant. Which reminds me great zucchini video by the way.
Zone 7, too.
Your grass looks like mine!!
Subbed because your vids are shorter and more concise.
Thanks.
I could tell he’s in my zone 2 seconds into hearing him talk 😜. Great video, very tight and perfect for someone like me just getting into this. Subscribed!
I love this channel! I am brand new to gardening. You are a very good teacher.
Never thought of pruning cucumbers, but it makes sense. Thank you
Happy that I surf upon your gardening tip channel.
Thank you for sharing this video
Thank you for this! I had no idea what I was getting myself into growing cucumbers... so pruning is on my task list today!
Just in time to keep my cucumbers in shape from the start. Thanks for the great video
I have learned so much from your channel. Thank you! This is my first year of having a larger garden.
Love your videos, thank you. We are your neighbor in NC and your tips are amazing.
How do you get so many blossoms? I've never seen so many before! Enjoy your informative videos.
Thanks it help me a lot because I don’t which is which ! So is easier to cut the leaves for air flow! We are in Minneapolis and i just plant our vegetables couple days ago and not yet grown ( cold too) but is good to know 👍
I’m new at this and I grow my cucumbers in a container. I’m getting ready to transplant my seedlings. Question, how far into the growing process do you start to prune?
Such healthy looking cucumbers! Wandering how to keep the leaves so thick and green???
Out to prune my cukes, thanks for such educational videos
I had no idea that planting peppers together could get different ones to cross. Also great tip about the heat. I will shade mine in the hot sun. Thanks!!!!
Absolutely! Thank you for watching 🙏
I'm in zone 8 rain for days sprayed them for mildew been pruning for days but I will not pull suckers sweating buckets pruning my jungle but I've been successful this year. Thank you for the video
Do cucumbers only grow off the main stem. Do they produce on the suckers also?
Your videos are SO helpful
Excellent video.
My cucumber plants are growing up a trellis and I have removed all sucker-side shoots until they get to shoulder high, then I train them to spill back over and I keep some of the side shoots now that they are up high. Wish me luck.
Very informative as I an new to gardening
I didn’t think you said airflow too much 😂 and I liked how you pronounce foliage like Fo-lige …in New England we say Fo-lee-ige 😁
Thanks! I need to do this to my cucumbers and I appreciate the info!
Thank you to help us how to prune the cucumbers
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching!
I appreciate your videos they get right to the point. Thank you! I’m a new subscriber.
I appreciate you subscribing 😀
Glad you're liking the videos! I've had a blast making them.
Those cucumber 🥒 plants look so healthy and beautiful. Im jealous. I gotta know ur secrets. Im in Zone 8! SC! Im going to definitely thin out my 3 plants tomar! Thank you 4 this tip! I know airflow is very important and keeping them off of the ground.
Thank you for sharing your tips.
Thanks for the video. This is my first year growing cucumbers, squash and in big pots -tomatoes . If it looks like one of my plants has powdery mildew, would it be best to remove this plant completely?
Do you compost your what you prune off? Or is it possible to spread or introduce disease insects and fungus into future gardens if I us it?
Love ur vibes dude thanks for the vid
Thank you. Good advice.
Hey how do I keep the moles, voles and chipmunks out of my garden? I have one of those noise makers so far…ugh never had this issue before..also is it ok to grow cucumbers near corn or okra? Thanks for the information
I sprinkle cayenne pepper on the soil and it works
My plants have been growing my vines are pretty long now on my cucumber plants but they’re growing bigger than expected and I was wanting to try to have them go up a trellis can add raise them off the ground and put them up on a string or a trellis of some sort after they’ve gotten really long or do I need to wait till next year to start doing that???
YES! I love the sweet success cucumbers. In my area, I have a HORRIBLE problem with gourd beatles. My pumpkins, squash, etc has been a failure every year. I've tried every remedy I can find with no luck. Last year I decided to try cucumbers and tried the sweet success and one other kind. Of course, the gourd beatles came back just like every year and even though they attacked my other cucumber plant, the essentialy stayed off of the sweet success. I was really impressed. So if anyone has any ideas about how to treat my gourd beatles I'd love to hear it. It would be nice to grow something else. Lol. But if anyone has the same beatles problem as I do, try the sweet success.
Thank you! Another great video!
Wow! Thank you so much Denise!
Thanks for the info. I am in Florida and it’s my first year growing cucumbers. They’re so big already and I did them from seed in April! I like your space.
Thank you!
Should I top them at 6 ft? Or let them grow over the trellis?
What is your plant spacing? Thanks.
Love your advice 😅.
Will be trying this one my leaves today thks
Thanks for your videos! Great advice and now I know what I'm doing wrong with my squash, cucumber and zucchini plants!
thanks for the info. any recommendations on yellow leaves and how to treat them? thank you
You need to feed your plants nitrogen! Also, the oldest leaves will yellow naturally with time, you can just prune those off.
@@lilyxciv5637 thank you
We used a hog panel this year to trellis our cucumbers. Hoping it will work
Great info. Thanks. Keep up the good work
Same
Thanks so much, for your help!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Thank for this info 😊
Thanks for watching :)
Thank you! I hope you can share a pruning video of winter squash. 🙏🏼
So once it reaches the top what to do? I rather have more fruits and a long steam with few ones.
My question is can you use the leaves in order to make compost tea , I already use my grass clipping...just thought all those leaves removed from your garden like Zucchini and Cucumbers , may have benefits 😉
Hi❣️🌱🐦
You can add anything growing, that you've chopped down picked up or somebody gave you. I also add some garden soil or some compost and stir it up. Wait about 3 days, the longer the better. Don't be scared, IT REALLY STINKS!!!!!
I call mine "Gnarly Swamp Water" It's bad!!!! That's alright, it's worth it. Just put some Vicks VapoRub under your nose 🤭 and keep going.
I then take about 1 to 2 cups and put it in a 2 gallon bucket and fill with water and stir it up again. Then I water my plants with it.
It's awesome.
God bless
Jude, from Kentucky ✝️🥀🐴🇺🇲💚
no
You can
Have to use gloves and sleeves when dealing with my cukes. Make me itch soooo bad ... but won't stop me from making pickles!
The cucumbers I'm growing don't have any tendrils. Don't all cukes have them?
Might be squash or zuchini
Should I limit how much of the plant, I prune?
Thank you from zone 8b
Thank you....great advice 😉👍
Just some interesting information to add to growing cucumbers, cucumbers must be pollinated more than once to be able to grow to maturity. They have to be pollinated as many as 11 times and sometimes up to 16 times. If you’ve ever had a cucumber to curl up at the end it’s because it’s been under pollinated. Answer: become a beekeeper or ask a beekeeper to have a hive in your yard.
Wow. Thanks for sharing this!
@Nina Moore I've been gardening for over a decade, and I never knew that! Thx for the info! 😃
Good tip thanks
Depends on the veriatie. There are some varieties that don't need to be pollinated.
I have to prune mine.ikeep fiding old overgrown yellow cucumbers I couldn't see through the leaves.1
Thank you for the information. I had to prune my zucchini last year. My strawberries have a zillion leaves on them and underneath they are getting moldy. Do you think I could prune a few leaves for air flow?
Yes! I definitely would!
In the UK where we have a lot of damp summers,we prune old leaves on strawberries, and surround the plants with dry straw or hay to keep the air flow.
I love all your good information about gardening. Right to the point and very helpful.❤🪴
Im realizing that mine are getting pickle worms, when I open the cucumber up, its still inside alive, do you have this issue and how do you resolve it? ty for the video
I've been fortunate and have not had to deal with them. Picking your produce as early as possible is a good practice. Crushed rolled sections of leaves on damaged plants. This is where pupae hide and then emerge as adult moths, ready to repeat the pickleworm lifecycle.
Bug B Gon will work also.
Love your videos! Great advice!
How to prevent bitterness in the cucumbers?
have you ever had mosaic on cucumbers, mine were kickin ass until the vines got 5 or 6 feet long and it started on the oldest leaves and has been working its way up the vine...grrr
I live in the south and I would never do this. Sun is way too strong and extra leaves keep cucumbers cool. Without enough leaves main branches would burn up and the entire plant would dry up and die.
I am growing 4 Persian cucumber plants. I only see male flowers , that is no small cucumber under the flower. But I read that Persian cucumber plant only produce female flowers. Why ???
How close do you plant your seeds together?
I accidentally broke the tip of my plant when trellises will my plant be ok its 6 ft tall
Can you prune too much?? I mean cam cukes get sunburned??
Good shit. Thanks man
I wish I could share a pic of my cucumbers. I need help. I have tons of babies. Just none are growing. They look like clusters of teeny tiny fruits. Clusters are the Size of saucers. This is the first year in struggling with this.
Not enough pollination. Try grabbing some female flowers and rub them over the male flowers to help the process
great help thanks \m/
Thanks for sharing🥒🥒🥒🥰
my cucumbers just started flowering everywhere for a couple days now, all i want to know is if i should pinch the flowers or not. can someone pls tell me if i should? ive been thru google and youtube and its all mixed answers
I wouldn't pinch the flowers. The male flowers outnumber the female flowers. However, you need them both for pollination.
@@skgreenhouse thank you so much!
This is dope, never knew they needed that much sun 🌞
😂
This is dope 👍🏼
I didn't have to do that because a groundhog came through and did it for me 😞
I thought sweet success cucumbers should only be grown in a greenhouse where nothing pollinates it...don't they get bitter when grown where bees, flies, etc can pollinate them?
I've learned from Jess at Roots and Refuge that you can plant tomato suckers and start a new plant. Does anyone know if this possible with cucumber suckers? Just curious.
I don't believe so. This week I pruned my San Marzano tomatoes for the first time. It's so hard to throw away blooming branches, so I'm rooting them. Last night I did an aspirin drench on my tomatoes and also changed out the rooting water with leftover aspirin drench water. Hoping it makes them strong and disease resistant... like I need any more tomato plants.
@@joanies6778 Thanks for the reply! It is so difficult to toss anything with growing potential!!
I grew cucumbers in my garden and walked out with my wife and I have 10 massive songs laying around. Never again🙄
Your hands must be like asbestos mitts! Each time i touch my plants, no matter how careful I am, those thorny stems get me! 😫
Good advice however you should have covered the difference in leaves. Sun leaves should be kept on the plant.
Foliage (three syllables)
I noticed several problems with your demonstration. But hey I don’t k is it all so I will wish you good luck.
If you want to know what I think you did wrong just let me know.
Don’t just prune out foliage! Eat the leaves! Stir fry or eat in soups or like spinach.
Zone 7b. Better get pruning
If you do like this your plant not in balance, finally weak plants and a few cucumbers.. and plant get sick..many cucumbers get yellow and die of.
🤔
😊
I have to go raised bed as I live on rock. No dirt. H
Can you please tell me more about “airflow”?? 😂😂
Drink Everytime he says folage instead of foliage 🤣🤣
😏
🍻
