For me, the lightweight trowel is for trips where I'm most likely _not_ digging a latrine or a fire pit: day hikes, whether from the start or as excursions from base camp. If I have to move dirt, I don't want to do it a spoonful at a time. For years, I've packed a Cold Steel Spetsnaz shovel, which also has one sharpened edge. The titanium trowel is in reserve. I started backpacking, decades ago, with a U-Dig-It folding trowel, but I found it wold fold under normal use. There was no positive lock at the time, just spring tension from the legs of the handle, and my normal grip would bend the legs of the handle enough for them to disengage from the blade.
Good thing about Sea to Summit is that, in addition to being good gear, it goes on sale quite often. I grabbed an X-Brew directly from StS for $7 in Jan 2023 during one of its sales. So, just keep your eyes open and you can snag some high quality gear for low prices (and not have to worry about dealing with untrustworthy online retailers).
Please stop apologizing about price. I have bought premium backpacking gear for less than it would cost me to rent a condo on the beach for a week and I have experienced so much more for weeks on end!!! BTW, I love the Petzl Bindi and the MSR coffee press. I am a coffee snob and it makes a great cup of real coffee!!!
Great info/gift guide (even if it might be a bit late for things that can't be bought locally). Maybe next year, a few different videos like this with different categories (e.g.: "camp kitchen gear", "tools and accessories", etc.)?
I use regular baby wipes on long elk hunts in the backcountry. I dry them out so i can bring more for the same weight. Just add water. Also, I absolutely dont believe for one second that the alpine start is a better option than nescafe. You can get 100 cups of nescafe for the same price and it tastes great. LOL I feel so triggered by this.
Got me the Ozark trail camping pillow and backpacking shovel. Haven't used them yet but when you are going to be backpacking 365 days a year ill probably get something better down the road when I have the funds. Sucks not having a job. How do I become a successful backpacking youtober like yourself?!
You’re gonna be backpacking 365 days a year?! That’s impressive! As for becoming a successful UA-camr (are you telling me I’ve made it?! ), I guess I don’t know other than to just start, and then be consistent!
A video comparison on, Dry, Stuff, Compression, and Waterproof sacks would be beneficial to many. I.E. NOT learning the hard way :// Like what you're are doing here! NOT sure you and the Becker guy are safe to be outdoors together but that is up to the Authorities to decide. ;))
If you remove the tent poles, you could do that, although I'm not sure it would be as valuable on a tent. With sleeping bags there is just so much air, and the compression sack allows you to squeeze most of it out.
I had to make a pillow out of my down jacket one time and it was a disaster. I ended up needing to use my jacket because it was so cold and then I didn’t have a pillow at all (I forgot it before I left)
I'm really curious why do Americans think that there is a significant difference in the viral load of the natural waters in the states compared to the rest of the world. This is the 3rd or 4th video I've seen in a few days referring to this idea (at 4:00 ) which is pretty ignorant in the best case...
Typically it has more to do with developed vs non developed places. Alot of countries don't have the proper sewage treatment facilities and raw effluent just goes directly into the stream or river. So in those sitiations you could be exposed to alot more viruses than in the states or western europe.
I can’t comprehend why UA-camrs suggest anything other than the Nitecore NU25 headlamp. Lighter and longer battery life. Obviously this guy is bias towards with sponsors. “Do not recommend channel” if you want real hiking reviews. Instead watch a thru hiker gear list.
Gear for a thru hiker may vary compared to a weekend or general backpacking type trip. Mostly because you can recharge easily between trips. I like Ledlenser because of the excellent lenses that can focus a beam of I want to see into the distance, especially helpful if navigating at night, searching for a route, or in an emergency. That’s great if your sole goal is weight savings, but there are other factors. There is more than one “real” way to enjoy hiking!✌🏼
Please do a video about the Kelty Trekker 3950...I Absolutely love mine. Also do a video about Who is and was Colin Fletcher . ua-cam.com/video/AcpzyNq5GNU/v-deo.html
I just bought a new Osprey 65 L backpack and a 20 degree down bag (Alpkit 600) for less than the cost of the backpack on eBay. New with tags. It pays to look around.

Great setup!
Just used on pct and was happy with how I could just scoop and go while others had systems that took forever.
That compression sack is nice. I'll need to try. This weekend I'll be stuffing my sleeping bag in my backpack to see how that works.
I agree, the compression sack is pretty cool! 👍
Yeah they’re pretty awesome!
Try the Noble Tree coffee in tea bags. The easiest way to make coffee and some of the best coffee I've ever had.

Hey! Great videos! Thank you!! Can you share your at home gear storage system we see in the background of this video? Thanks!!
i use a metal pour over system that uses a paper filter and it folds flat and is light, i think from sno peak
I'm gonna have to try the Snow Peak one.

Yeah I tried to get this one ready earlier. But I’ll blame the supply chain!
I need that coffee deal from sea to summit...coffeeeee great video as always Eric! It looks like several times you almost laughed lol 😆
Haha I usually do laugh at my own jokes.
@@BackpackingTV I do it too Eric sometimes I even sing on my channel lol
The red light feature keeps away bugs at night??
Speaking stakes, what do you use to drive them into the ground?
What is you preference on pillows. Inflatable pillow or one of those small compressible memory foam pillows?
The Vargo trowel rocks more than the Deuce

Have you tried Wysi wipes? They are like dehydrated wipe wafers.
"you can also use it as a spoon" Ha!!!!
Glad you liked that
Side by side a full backpack of compression sacks next to everything uncompressed
I got nora virus drinking spring water in norcal one time. It was miserable 3 days after that

Great idea, thanks! And yes I'm sure that the authorities will soon be cracking down on Dan and I's shenanigans.
@@BackpackingTV Stay safe and nice Pintler?
Would I be able to use this compression sack on my tent sack or would that compromise it in some way?

Which sleeping bag was in the compression sack?
I think it was my Sea to Summit Ascent 2
@@BackpackingTV thank you so much for answering my question
Can really put a "hamper on the camper"
Sorry couldn't help myself
Heyo! Nice.

Yeah I've been there and it's not fun!
Pleasant in the Netherlands? I really got confused by that one haha :P
Haha, but you got there eventually?
@@BackpackingTV Hahaha yeah I figuered you weren't talking about nationality🦆😂
you should have save the poop trowel and wipes for the 'tail end of the video"
Heyo! Aww man I totally blew that one!

Interesting. I’ll look into that!
wow!!!! i could buy all that for under 50 bucks not each item lmao!!!!!
Sponsored by a company who makes the most expensive packs ever lol
Lots of unnecessary stuff
If you cant afford equipment over 50 than you need a new life and job
I just bought a new Osprey 65 L backpack and a 20 degree down bag (Alpkit 600) for less than the cost of the backpack on eBay. New with tags. It pays to look around.
Not everyone is that fortunate. You can still enjoy the outdoors without top of the line equipment.
