The song is about "Africa" right? MB what you are hearing in the background is an African instrument called Kalimba which is making that sound thaat is giving you chills....This song went to No.1 on the Billboard charts in Pop, Rock, & Alternative Rock. Very popular. Really showcases the members of Toto!!! This Toto style tell you that Rock n' Roll is not just shredding guitars or banging the Drums or screaming vocals; Rock is also world music from places like Africa or Asia, Rock is also has Jazz or Blues music or Country/Folk music in it also. So, now in this "Africa," you are hearing African music and Rock n' Roll music fused together. And like many Rock bands often do...the band members are playing with authentic African instruments like the drums. flutes. Kalimba( used a lot in the band Earth Wind & Fire) to instroduce these instruments to the western society and young folks like you. The high background vocal is the same lead vocalist on the song "Hold The Line." You have a great ear! There are 3 lead singers in this band, however, all band members can really sing. Great vocals. Remember these guys were studio musicians and played for other famous bands in the studio in the 70's and got paid for it. You can make lots of money being a studio musician in the music world. Many artists do before they branch out and create their own music. something you might want to consider especially producing. I think you would make a great producer. Just a thought!

Hi, MollyBoy. True Fact: this tune by Toto is currently playing on a perpetual loop in the middle of the desert in Nambia, Africa. The player that it's playing on was designed by a German Engineer. Similar to an MP3 format and the player only requires charging every 50yrs. The special casing of the player will last at least 500 yrs in the harsh desert sun. I literally shed a tear when I read this! ❤

A perfectly perfect song and it just overwhelms you with the rhythm and the music and the lyrics. People had a sense of hope despite what was going on. That really started in the 1960s. It got squashed a bit in the 1980s, but the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Soviet Union brought hope. The 1990s was a decade of great optimism and promise, at least in the United States, and initially, the internet was a great hope for freedom and democracy. 9/11 and the establishment of the surveillance state, and then the takeover of the internet my the rich ended a time of great hope. We have never recovered since then. I don't know what it will take, but I think it will be a personal transformation in people's lives, not a top down solution. Watching these music reactions by young people has given me great hope, because I see that people recognize soul in the arts and their empathy is being awakened and they are being inspired. We can only keep on keeping on. Despair is the enemy.

This was Toto’s only U.S. #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart and they didn’t even want it released as a single AND were hesitant to even include it on the Toto IV album. Pretty hard to believe, huh? Even artists can sometimes under appreciate and not recognize how good a song is until the public reacts to its obvious appeal. I have always completely loved this song and it has never gotten old for me or lost the uniquely timeless sound and atmosphere the brilliant instrumentation creates. The song grabs you as it builds and as it’s starting into the outro you realize just how amazing of a sonic “safari” your ears just went through. It’s a stunning and brilliantly beautiful track ❤

    I've always loved Toto's harmonies.

You have a joy for music that is infectious 😊 “Africa” comes from the album Toto IV, which won the Album of the Year Grammy award in 1983 9:57 . Really, every track on the album is stellar. “Rosanna” is the other smash hit, which won for Record of the Year at the same Grammy Awards. David Paich is the lead singer on this one. Bobby Kimball is the stellar tenor with backing vocals, and sang “Hold the Line”.

GREAT reaction, MollyBoy! Thanks for covering Africa by Toto. They were one of my fave bands in the late 70s and through the 80s. btw, in North America, a geezer is an old guy or any old person, but mostly refers to old men. I am a senior woman. My husband says, "Thinking you're just another old lady is their first mistake." We were teen aged sweethearts in the early to mid 70s and got back together 40 years later in 2016. Life is full of wonderful surprises, buckle up!

A geezer here in the UK is just another name for a a guy, a man, a bloke, etc... it isnt necessarily used as a derogatory term... Just some random guy, we have multiple words / terms for all manner of things, behaviours, drinks, drunks, getting drunk, foods including main meal - _not_ "entrée" which means a 'starter' - desserts, everything you could think of, we'd have an alternative description / name for! Not _just_ English, but Cockney rhyming slang, and different dialects according to districts, counties, towns and villages etc! 👍🤭🇬🇧

Don't lament the past little brother.
For those of us who were there, we tend to idolise the 60's, 70's, 80's etc music scene but the reality is, great music stays great - it doesn't have a 'use by' and for those who care (thats you little brother) all music moves us as we personally evolve.
Example - I always bagged my old mans opera; (largely cos I dont speak Italian😅) but he always insisted you dont need to understand it to love it - bollocks I replied!
It wasn't until the first time I heard Rammstein that I finally understood him.
After that, I listened with new ears. Andrea Bocelli made me weep when I first listened, 10 years after the old mans passing, I wish I could have told him he was right.
Don't yearn for the past little brother, enjoy it, learn from it, find bits you can hold on to, but remember, nows good too.
