The only part I liked was when an accident occurred, and the black lettered phrase "Prepare for a panic!" appeared on the screen.
Sam rarely has something to panic about. One running session day, he had a ridiculously long passenger train attached to an old and weakened diesel double-header The diesels in question were a Class 71 and a rather tatty Hymek. The long train was on the outside line, going down Gordon's Hill. At first, everything went well. Until Sam unwisely decided on a bit more speed, that is.
"Oops," observed Sam. "That's not good." The 71 and Hymec ran round the curve perfectly well, but the coaches interlocked buffers with each other. Sam did his best to prevent a catastrophe waiting to happen, yet the coaches refused to co-operate. Disaster struck. The carriages, 16 in number, toppled over sideways. The diesels toppled over with them. The loft shook under the impact of a nasty crash. This was not all. The 37 and 47 came along from under the bookcase with a more sensible load of empty wagons, on the outside line. A collision rocked the scenery again. Sam was alarmed.
"What else could possibly go wrong?" he asked himself quietly. Uh-oh! He spoke too soon. If he had thought two double-headers derailing was bad enough, he was about to be proved wrong. They do say accidents come in threes.
A disaster beyond Sam's imagination struck with alarming force. A third train, this time a HST, came along on the inside line facing the other way. Sam covered his face with his hands.
"I can't look!" he wailed. It was just as well he didn't dare. The HST hit the double wreck and its motor exploded. Silence fell. What a way to run a model railway.

I have a Rail freight grey version, which I picked up second hand for my 6 year old. He loves it, flys around his layout out at about full speed all the time……….. and his attention away from my accurascale and Bachmann stuff 🫣👍

Like all your videos Sam, this one is superb.
It brings back memories of building a layout with my son many years ago, we had a Hornby type 47 in BR blue, and it had the same problem.
The local model shop supplied two new tyres and gave advice to turn the loco around and pull from the other end. It made a lot of difference.
By the way, your link up with Chambs was brilliant - do it again.
    Richard.

sewingman1 Thanks very much - glad you enjoyed this one in particular!
I've had a look at the traction tyres, and they seem to be in perfect condition & don't seem to be slipping (apparently the loco had only been used for a short time before I bought her). Instead, it seems that something is causing the wheels to ride upwards from the tracks slightly around the curves causing them to loose traction, since she returns to full strength along the straights - it's very weird!
Thanks again for your support, me and Chambs123 have got another vid in the pipeline! :)
      Cheers,
      Sam

+Sam'sTrains There are a few UA-cam loco reviewers in the US who have started to weight the locos they review with a postal scale in grams and pounds. Grams for the world, pounds for Americans. LOL... Most of us have figured it out that heavier locos pull longer rakes.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  9 років тому +2

Absolutely, it's a very good idea (providing the motors can take it) Weight certainly isn't the issue here since there's a very large weight in there already. I do plan to shift that weight closer to the driving bogey though, in the hope that I might improve traction that way!
      Cheers,
      Sam

It’s quite funny but the Hornby class 47 was released in 1976, it did come with a illuminated head code box. It featured moulded lines down the sides of the bodyshell for the 2 tone green paint finish. Then in about 1984 Hornby removed the moulded lines down the bodyside ( but they remained on the cab sides) The original 1976 release featured a different version of the ringfield motor & a cast metal chassis. Up until 1987 the Hornby 47 was as good as it got. The Lima 47 rendered it redundant , yet for some strange reason Hornby persisted with it. Used to some epic reworks if these models , south eastern models flushglaze windows, new head code boxes , cut out some of the bogie detail , reduce the ride height of the bodyshell / cut the moulded lugs off. New turned brass oleo buffers , screw link couplings pipes / eth lead. Getting rid of the moulded bodyside lines was always the biggest improvement to make. Fond memories of getting to grips with these things.

Many thanks for sharing this! haha interesting that Hornby persisted with theirs - sounds like their mentality hasn't changed! ;D

Hi Sam, check to see if the central chassis weight is still there.
If it's the 5 pole motor and 10 of the 12 wheels pick up current, this should be a nice runner. My first thought when you mentioned slipping is to put on new traction tyres, perhaps a previous owner got some oil on them.
    Should be a cheap fix.
    Regards, Cliff.

      janiceandcliff Hi Cliff,
The weight was still there - I even tried to add some more but it made no difference.
It's almost like the rubber occasionally breaks contact from the rails, losing traction, and then connects again after a push - I'm wondering if something is causing the wheels to ride upwards from the rails around curves (since the loco is very powerful along the straights!) As far as I can tell, the tyres are perfectly okay and I can't manually make them slip without the wheels starting to turn!
Thanks very much for your ideas anyway, its certainly another weird one!
      Cheers,
      Sam

Sam'sTrains Ok, going back to the video, the loco didn't like the 2nd radius curves and seemed to lose power. It must be wasting power actually turning it's bogies. My 37 has the same bogies, looking at these, they have two body side mounts and 2 retaining lugs. Check these areas for any moulding flash or snags, the wires themselves must be free also.
Another commentor says he had the same problem.
I also prefer to run the loco with the traction tyres on the "outside" of the layout, to gain any extra current from the flanges on the tyred drivers.
      Regards, Cliff.

janiceandcliff Thanks Cliff, I've checked all you suggested and done another test, it's definitely around 2nd radius curves - the motor can still be heard and the wheels still turn and, if the loco had enough momentum, it seems to finish the curve and regain traction (the motor noise gets louder at this point as it's put under load again) It's really strange! I might try and film it from low down & then slow it down to better see whats happening! Will keep you posted hehe ;)
      Thanks again,
      Sam

Sam'sTrains My Tri-ang style Hymek initially had some resistance to bogie turn, the motor is mounted at the top as you know, but there is also a locating pin near the battery box. This pin runs in a slot, I needed to remove any flash and ensure everything was smooth, this slot was more important than I thought. : )
      Cheers, Cliff.
PS. Maybe John Chambs123 has the answer.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  9 років тому +1

Yeah, I'm thinking the bogie feels a bit stiff when I turn it by hand. I may take it out entirely and, as you say, check all the surfaces are smooth. hehe I might take the loco to John next time I go and see if he can fathom it if I don't get any luck!
      Cheers,
      Sam

Hi Sam , I have a Hornby class 57 which has a habit of breaking the wire joints to the pickups and it behaves just like that on bends when one wire goes down . I have to
    re solder it then ......Peter.

Peter Shaw Ah okay, thanks for that - though mine doesn't actually cut out, it just wheel slips a little - its very weird!

I got mine from "The Night Mail Express" train set which came with two Virgin MK2D's and a (very rare) Royal Mail TPO, the set seems to be quite rare to but a good look on my layout! Sadly my 47 has started to go down in performance as before she was absolutely stunning for a ringfield motor, she makes a squeaking noise when she runs...any ideas? Also for your 47 maybe try and buy Hornby's new Virgin Mk2E coaches with the lights, fantastic when the lights go off and even better if you put passengers in too, I have 2 myself!
    Cheers!
    Ed.

Also, mine came with the Virgin logo correctly, have no clue why Hornby removed it from one side but not the other...mine also had a lot more painted detail and...if I ever get the body off I will make the cab look a bit better like I did to my Hornby (Tri-ang?) Class 47 in the Freightliner livery (BR owned)
Maybe even one day replace the ringfield with the new Hornby Class 47 TTS chassis :O
      Maybe one day hah
      Cheers!
      Ed.
