- A TikTok video advertising a 200 square foot bachelor suite at the Lotus Hotel in Vancouver's Downtown East side has stirred controversy over the up to $2,000 monthly price tag in the building.
The since-removed video, which takes viewers on a virtual tour of the single-room occupancy (SRO) suite, stirred backlash after going viral and has reignited concern among locals about ever-increasing rental prices.
“That’s way too much for 200 square feet,” said resident resident Sean Esser, who pays $1,300 for a similar unit. “I can’t even believe how much I pay and I know it’s quite an expensive city,” he added.
Earlier this week, online rental unit website Rentals.ca reported the average monthly price for a one-bedroom apartment in the city had surpassed $3,000 per month.

"Nothing we can do" explains this whole disaster that is Canada's future.
Exactly, well who can do something? Crooked politician.
If there's nothing he can do then why was he elected? None of these politicians want to do their jobs. Vote these bums out.
Investment firms should be banned from housing in Canada it's disgusting what they are doing to working class people
Leftist elitists need to quit preventing development.
Until ppl say enough is enough in a big enough loud enough cohesive voice, this will continue with housing, food, fuel, fee amounts for licenses, ticket amounts etc they will all go up
Sad but true
Ive been saying this Rent City + Tent City protests. but nobody is interested you get what you do not stand up for
Shameful what they are doing to those people
No one forced them to live in DT did they?
@@rockyjohnson9243 Don't be disrespectful. Where do you live?
@@coffeelover1763 BC, however not in DT that is just stupid lol. I also don't rent I bought my place for 1.5mill just over 20 years ago now. I just recently paid it off. However that took many sacrifices, like no drinking, drugs, eating out, movies. having my own garden to save money at the stores and lastly no Taylor Swift Concerts. things people enjoy and then say they have no money lol. However I am debt free today collecting rent and enjoying life not having to work for the man anymore. Also what is so disrespectful? That people are trying to complain about the costs of rents in the DT core. How about moving out of DT. Honestly If I had to do it all over again I am looking towards Alberta, Red Deer / Lethbridge. However that's me and I see the opportunity's.
@@rockyjohnson9243
Exactly. They pretty much brought it upon themselves.
"modernize" units.
That’s Conspiracy, negligence and money fraud and lying. That’s three crimes right there.
Government is sitting collecting that commission my advice work from home in different country Canada is not liveable anymore. It's unbelievable how Greed got so popular.
Canada is livable. It's just that many refuse to expand their horizons beyond Toronto and Vancouver.
The level of greed involved here is sickening.
Its government policy not greed
7 years ago I paid $1850 for a 2 bedroom one block from Stanley Park and one block from the beach. A 1 bedroom in the same building goes for over $2500 now... I don't even want to know what a 2 bedroom is there now
That's huge compared to China. If you can't afford BC "Bring Cash" Then move to Alberta, Lethbridge has 2 bedroom apartments that include heat for 700 - 900 per month.
But if you support lib or ndp, please stay where you are!
It's the weather though people don't want to live in Alberta or Ontario etc. anymore because it's sweltering hot for three months and freezing cold for five months and people stay inside for heating and air conditioning.
@@centuryhousegames733 I am Conservative, I wish they would cut everything.
@@annalisavajda252 Well I guess win the Lotto, invest in a good stock? However that is risky but sometime worth it. Honestly I love the prices being High here in BC keeps the population down.
@@rockyjohnson9243 yeah! amongst other things that need to be done!
For that level of money you could build your own log cabin in the woods and live in peace and freedom away from the urban chaos....the only thing to be careful of is don't do it in any territory claimed by Sasquatches, because they are very territorial and don't like any humans living on their land.
Agreed
Then how about you go do that then if you’re so smart
@@dwights1024 done!
Or any territory prone to wildfires.
These people don’t have the money to buy land 🤣 who are you kidding. I wish!!!! The government is going to have to put the money into housing like so many other countries have.
I remember walking around Glasgow Scotland with my girlfriend who lives there and she showed me street after street of townhomes that were counsel flat. Rent geared to income. On many many streets units were empty waiting for a new tenant. My friend herself lived in one. And they weren’t in the ghettos like you might think they’d be.
Heck even in China they have a huge amount of social housing. So why don’t we both in the US and Canada. There is a reason they came up with the 30% of income being what we should pay in rent housing to be able to live without living in poverty. So so many receive less for the whole month that’s rent food bills etc then what a “cheap” rental would cost. So WHAT GIVES!! That doesn’t math up 🤦🏼♀️
NYC already did this and it's a disaster. People are screwed.
Rent in Vancouver will be $4000 soon
Who would be in their *right mind* to use the Chinese 🇨🇳 TikTok app after all these warnings.
Wrong. 😂🤣. That’s a lie. There is something he can do. What they’re doing is illegal. He thinks money fraud is legal.😂🤣.
I understand that it may be legal due to limitations of existing laws and policies, etc. However, the situation is clearly getting out of hand as people are having to live in such tiny spaces for 2K/month or becoming homeless. Yes, I understand people could move to other neighborhoods that are less expensive, but everyone's circumstances are different. For officials to say, "There's nothing we can do," that is simply not true, and in my opinion, lazy and irresponsible. When there's a will, there's a way. If they do not have the authority to make certain changes, they could go through the proper channels and propose ideas/solutions to other officials/governing bodies who do have the authority to make changes to existing laws. Sounds to me like they either don't care enough or don't want to due to greed. 2K per month for less than 200sq ft is disgusting. I am extremely grateful to not be affected. However, I empathize with those who have to pay so much to live in these micro homes. The rent alone is more than some people's mortgages and doesn't even include the cost of other basic necessities such as groceries. Not everyone can afford to buy a home either. Some people living in these expensive tiny apartments may be seniors and/or people with disabilities, etc. Hopefully things will change for the better ASAP for them. 😢
its leftism 100%
Ship them all to Quebec. They got 13 billion in equalization payments that can be used to help the homeless out
This is where progressive policy gets you.
maybe unethical and unscrupulous should be illegal?
Move out of downtown for crying out loud!!
why would anyone rent one of those for $2k, there are plenty of apparetments with way more sq ft in toronto for way less
Forum Asset Management is just as crooked as Starlight Investments both Toronto based companies, predating on rental properties in the west.
Canada is the worst country in the world. I hope I can move to the States soon as a healthcare provider.
as a dual citizen its better but not by allot expect to loose allot due to the exchange rate Can to USD
Lmao if you want to part with your money for a closet to live in , then there is no help for you. So glad I listened to my dad and got the hell out of the city. Now I own three properties and live away from the rat race and have peace and quiet around me. There will always be a sucker willing to pay for this type of living.
toxic burn it to the ground
That's $4,000 in NYC
This isn't a nice prt of the city it could be NYC prices or close but Vancouver has zero industry unlike NYC
If you can't afford it just don't live there.
That's like saying " if your homeless, just by a house".
@@centuryhousegames733not at all. Nobody is forced to live in Vancouver. Moving apartments is as simple as a bus or train ticket.
@@spookycanuck1 simple? Really? Ok
Agree
