Excellent video. I'm a TrailLife USA leader and I bring the smaller coffee cans to try troop to carry their 10 essentials in.

I'd like to suggest using the UCO candle lantern. They use a 9 hour candle. Also, there is a three candle model perfect for this application.

Normally my truck is my kit. Hiding in it is most of what I need. Work gloves & warm hats, blankets, toilet paper, two or three tarps, truck safety kit, booster cables, candles & flashlights, tire pump, small axe & folding saw & I’m sure there’s other items I’m forgetting about. Plus I throw in seasonal items too. In my younger days when the truck used to get off road more, well then it was recovery items as well. Spending the night would be nothing more then an inconvenience if you’re ready for it.

Sounds like your vehicle is very well equipped. Working on mine as we speak.

I keep a ton of gear in my Subaru but the most important winter item is the Wiggy's sleeping bag I leave in there. It's kind of bulky and heavy for backpacking but if my vehicle is doing the hauling there's no downside. My bag is very warm, certainly adequate even for the coldest temps we get in Montana. I do keep candles, food, saws, axes, tarps and other tools but keeping a heavy bag obviates the need for fire.

Great video!! I am amazed at the ppl who don't have anything in their vehicles for survival but will have a expensive stereo system in it tho. I think its time to update my car kit as well, some very good information here. I like to keep my car kits inexpensive but good quality. I do that in case of loss due to either theft or supply degradation.

Unfortunately the," I'll just call for help" mentality is getting worse. And when no help is available, lives are lost.

Very good tips. I hope everyone watching takes it to heart and makes a kit to stay safe. Thank you Dan, good work you are doing.

A few years ago my neighbor was putting out four of those coffee cans in the recycling and I grabbed them. I tried to tell my friends and family about being prepared but it doesn't even get past the first eardrum. You just gave me an idea. I just fitted four of those tea candles inside some round .22 pellet tins that I had laying around. I spent yesterday rearranging my emergency kit for warm weather so I'm going to add these two round tins today.

Great idea! I have a few of those old pellet tins laying around. I'll have to hunt them up.

Great tips, Dan. Love the coffee can heater! You mentioned that you have a vehicle first aid kit. Do you have a video showing us what’s inside? I’m trying to update/rebuild mine and would love to see what you carry.

Try typing in Ochoco Bushcraft First aid kit, and an older video I did should come right up. This is the kit I put together after taking a wilderness first aid course. Nothing has changed.

Really good information. We don't currently have a survival can in either vehicle. But I'm putting this on the priority list. Oh, please let me know what you think about the UCO candle lantern for the candle heater .

I'm not sure about the lantern. I get the coffee cans for free, and it holds all the gear. A couple candles burning inside throws out a fair amount of heat and won't tip over easily. I'd be concerned about knocking the lantern over with my feet.
