+Don Laurindo Mark V is the start of the tone. To get the "effects", look at what's in his rack: TC 2290 delay, Lexicon PCM reverb, & Eventide harmonizer. Same stuff (not the Mark V of course) JP used at the time he recorded Pull Me Under I'm pretty sure. Those 4 items, coupled with a quality guitar with hot pickups, and you're there. Just need to spend time tweaking the settings. And to really do it right, you'd need 2 amps so you could be in stereo, or my favorite: a Tri-Axis and a 2:90!! Probably looking at about 15 grand, all in.

You could plug a toaster into the gear he has here, and get it to sound like John on this track... There IS a lot of over-dubbing going on here... Not to mention the many instances where he is not in the same key or root chord for the string-skipping shapes... Good for you-tube, but I have been playing this and other stuff from DT and John for about 30 years, and some of the stuff here is purely for show, and not correct... The edited parts of the video are when he obviously is playing on a 6 string guitar, and the original piece from John on Pull me under was recorded on a 7 string EBOR guitar... Not bad, but not completely correct... Like I said though... A toaster on these hops could get that reticulated sound... Sorry, Rich kids with an endless bank of cash still lack the true American Guitar prodigy passion... John learned on a Kay guitar, and sears and roebuck amp...
